g'day mate we use these brushcutters and line on our vegetation contract here in Qld. we use the 3mm or 3.3mm stihl black and orange line and love it. We use both the stihl quick feed head and an aftermarket one and for a long time had this wrapping and melting issue. we have narrowed the problem down to the bigger brush cutters as the less powerful ones tend not to have an issue. It seems and inevitable issue however there are a few thing we do to limit it. Firstly put less cord in, only a meter or meter and a half, secondly instead of waiting for cord to wear right down short bump gently more often this has been the best way to limit the melting as you are always changing the friction point inside the head, works best in thick material. Great video keep it up!
Have you tried soaking the trimmer line in a bucket of water for 24hr before use? I’ve found on the fs260 that his improves line pliability/durability and helps prevent binding. For the thicker stuff you’re cutting I have similar paddocks and for that I use the stihl durocut 40-4 head with 3.3mm diamond edge line that works better than an auto feed head or 3x knife for slashing thicker denser areas. The durocut also slashes grass shorter than the auto head.
Hi, thanks for watching and really appreciate the advice. I’ll try the water soak next time ( spring in oz ), see how I go. I bought a 3 blade mulching knife but haven’t tried it yet, I think that will be good on the tougher stuff. Good to hear about the duro cut, I’d looked at them and wasn’t sure, that might be another thing I’ll try. Thanks again for watching.
I've been using Autocut 40-2 trimmer head for 17 years now without problems. No line melting or severe breaking. I'm trying Autocut 46-2 this year (2024) for the first time. I've noticed similar issue like your trimmer head is doing. Trimmer line is melting and breaking in a bit thicker grass. I'm soaking my trimmer lines in water as much as I can. I'm using the same lines like I was using in my Autocut 40-2 head. I don't exactly know the reason of the melting and breaking. I love 46-2 head because it is a little shorter than 40-2. The bumper is not protruding so much so the head is not jumping so much and I can mow the grass a bit closer to the ground. But I must change it for Autocut 40-2 untill I find the reason or how to properly use the 46-2 head.
Hi, thanks for watching. Strange how you are also getting the same issue but not with every autocut head. I’ve noticed this year that it hasn’t been as bad, so I’m totally confused as to what causes it.
Part of the reason the line may b sticking to itself is possibly bc of the gearbox heating the head up causing the line to melt together, may have to regrease the gearbox. Maybe
Hi Bobby , thanks for watching. I had thought the same, the head does get really hot but I’ve checked and the heat doesn’t transfer through, there are enough gaps to stop heat transfer.
@@TheRuralProject in tht case, idk. The trimmer must just b putting so much torque tht it’s stretching the line. Only reason I would’ve thought of would b either of those, lol. Good luck. Might honestly b better for like a Durocut 40-4 head or a blade tbh. Idk tho
@@bobbystewart2605 hi and thanks for the suggestions, you and I think alike. I tried the durocut and was massively disappointed, check out that video on my channel if you have time. I’m currently continuing with the auto feed and using the knife blade when needed.
@@TheRuralProject I’m actually kinda surprised with how badly the durocut was preforming in tht video. There’s another UA-camr I watch here and there (csabi tools, or something like tht) and he uses the 40-4 durocut and the AC 46-2 (or 56-2) on his trimmers and they worked fine. Good luck on your endeavors
Hi, no, I tried many ways to stop this and none worked. It’s heading into spring here in Australia so I’ll be brush cutting again soon and will make an update video.
hi, thanks for watching, I don't think that's the reason, the head doesn't get hot, it gets warm from high speed spinning ( the gears get warm), but definitely not hot
Thanks for watching and the idea, but the gear head is well greased, it’s not that the gear head gets too hot and melts the line, the line seems to friction melt to each other.

Mate, thanks for the input. Really good idea about the regular smaller bump feed, I’ll give that a try.
@@TheRuralProject no worries it’s what works for us anyway👍🏻

@@TheRuralProject a lot of people moved to Tecomac heads and didn't had a problem anymore.
@@ninoslav1980 thanks for the info. I’ll have a look at those.
The line melts because you are touching the ground while mowing! This makes the mower head warm!

Apply some grease to the gear head and the line won't melt that much... Happen to me once.. ✊
