In these videos I share with you the work undertaken on my 10 acre block that suffered in the February 2014 fires. Post the fire the trees closest to the house (which burned down) were bull dozed over and the land cleared. Watch as I clear fallen trees, install retaining walls, fix irrigation, fix plumbing, install a septic system, build and repair access roads, fix the Dam, build a shed, make wood shelters and make lots and lots of firewood, before eventually building a house.

I did the same on my qbota u17. Works peachy. May i ask what those boot cuffs are for? Never seen those before.
Thanks for watching. Its a great little hack, I wish I'd done it sooner. The boot cuffs are sock protectors, stops big grass seeds and wood chips from the chainsaw getting stuck in the socks or working into the boot, they are brilliant.
Nice video, anyone knows what is the best tool to use to get rid of those roots after this?
Hi, thanks for the positive feedback. A hole digging spade ( long and thin) will be best. Taking small pieces at a time. I’ve cut mine down flush with the floor using the grass cutter on lowest setting. A lazy way to do it and the grass is starting to grow through it….. but would be best to remove the roots.
Hello, I've been watching your channel for a while now and was curious about the excavator I'm looking to buy one the same one with 2600 hours and was wondering if they are reliable or problematic. Anyways would love feedback merry Christmas
Hi, thanks for watching and merry Xmas. The excavator is great, mines had a lot of use, the pins are loose and it’s worn, but it’s real powerful for its size. If you are using it for firewood I’m impressed with what it will lift, bigger would be more powerful ie a 5ton or an 8ton, but as they get bigger they have less manoeuvrability and cause more damage to the ground. The only issue I’ve had is an intermittent issues with the starter motor caused by worn wiring and /or faulty relay. I could have paid to rewire but I’ve just added a bypass switch that I use if the key doesn’t start it. I also had a leaky heater coil that would have been a bitch to replace so I just bypassed it to stop the leaks. Best of luck with it. 2600 hours is low hours so it should be great and ready to do lots more work.
Is this the 8lbs or 6lbs ? Isocore pro fiskars
This is the 8lbs. I’d like to try the 6lb, I think I’d split better with the 6lb, less weight but I’d be able to move it faster and be more accurate. The 8lbs is a real lump.
@@TheRuralProject thank you, I also have the 8lb and find it quite heavy.
As I was watching the video I was going to suggest that you should go with a triple skin flue kit. With the triple skin you can pretty well use almost any neutral cure silicone and it will handle what heat there is. I did make a mistake a few years ago after putting my hand on the outside skin of mine and finding it tolerably hot. Without much thinking I placed my hand on a Chinamans hat style like your original flue. While I was waiting for my fingerprints to grow back I thought about the fact that the top of the flue is effectively at the full temp of the exhaust gases whereas the 3rd skin is several hundred celcius cooler.
Ouch - gotta hurt. It was leaking again a few weeks ago in heavy rain. Bloody thing. I’ll be pouring litres of sealant on it next time I get chance. 😁😁 Thanks for watching and merry Xmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well Chris. Make sure that it's the sealing of the dektite around the flue and not a water buildup up the roof and it getting through a join in the iron.
I think it might be a water build up and then capillary action between the overlapping tin sheets. ( been researching it) But I’m still a problem for another day. 😁
What about Crocs😳😳😳
No crocs in Victoria, you need to be much further north to encounter them. Thanks for watching.
Right on Chris, 1... Down. & More To Go... Remember, Steady as she goes... Here's wishin' you and yours a Happy Holiday, Mate!!! Stay cool and remember, Don't forget to feed Skippy... lol... Peace Brother.🦘🌳☃✨
Hey Gringo. Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas to you and yours too. Hotting up in Australia but we are back in the uk right now for a family Xmas, brrrhhh, not used to this cold, but great to be with extended family. Have a great one.
@@TheRuralProject I'm right there with ya brother, it's cold here too. It's kinda funny how buisy it got all of a sudden. we're booked all the way till after new year. So me and my sweetie are here, just the two of us till then. We'll probably plan another run to AZ. sometime in Jan. or Feb. to give Uncle Sam His due. At the same time I'm gonna be bringin' home my splitter. I got a Full Bour 35 ton W/A log lift and A 4 and 6 way. And It even has a Hydrolic lift for the wedges... OK,It's not a wolff ridge, but It's close enough. Tell every one Feliz Navidad, from all of us here in Creel Chihuahua , Mexico... 🌲🌳❄🪵🔥
@ Feliz Navidad to you too. Look forward to hearing about the splitter once you get it.
Have a go mate sheesh
I gave it my best shot …. Sometimes things don’t go your way. 😁😁
@ 😂😂😂 good effort bro
yeah that happens. rivers can be a bit dangerous. at least you didn’t dive onto a submerged log. that would ruin your day. rivers imho in australia are better than beaches. so calm and serene. birds, the river flowing past.. hope you enjoyed it.
Hey, thanks for watching. Agree it could have been much worse. We still had a great time. Full video if you want to watch it. Thanks for watching.
Топор конечно хороший. Но большие бревна надо начинать раскалывать с края.
Hi, yes I agree, when I split lots of firewood I split round the edges, split down the middle was just for the video. Thanks for watching.
i learnt early on to keep the lock unlocked so if hit a log the engine jumps
Learnt by a similar lesson ? I’ll be doing the same in future. Thanks for watching I hoped you enjoyed it.
You need to build some type of ramp , so your not lifting those heavy blocks . The reason I split the wood is so I don’t have to pickup so much weight . 👍🇨🇦
@@cameronhamer9432 ah but when the camera is rolling and the director yells “action” I gotta put on a show. Jokes aside, they were a lump and I’d normally split with an axe or noodle them in half, it’s easier and faster that way. Thanks for watching from Canada eh!
@ well don’t strain yourself too much , I pull a muscle in my back and it’s a couple of weeks before I’m back at it . 👍🇨🇦
Fuel usage solved 😊
@@petersuares6705 ha ha, bit of an extreme way to save fuel, but ….. true. ……. I’m all about saving the environment 😁
I may borrow your idea here. Usually Ill build a base platform with thick lumber off the ground & also pallets but have to drive in metal pipe/metal fence pieces to stabilize the ends. Tarp covers & overhangs a little over the sides. I'll knock some rocks into the ground by these metal stakes with my mallet sometimes so I can stack enough weight for 4 feet high & 8 feet long rack but your method definitely seems more time efficient. And also stable/well weather proofed👍
Hi, thanks for the positive vibe. It’s a great set up. Works really well. Best part is that if you have lots of space you can make it as long as you like and then when it’s empty it takes 5 minutes to move the timber and blocks.
I've split a lot of firewood over the years (I'm by no means an expert though) but man that wood looks tough. Seems to me you got the right axe with Fiskars & your form & technique working the edges of the round first is great just real tough Aussie wood there 👍
@@thaimuayshoo1171 thanks for watching and positive feedback. Yep, bloody tough wood. When I get tougher wood than this I get the Fiskars maul out.
Probably an adventure your not going to forget anytime soon. What ended up being the damage to your outboard?
@@brentonclarke hi, it was a great adventure, but the thrill police always charge like a wounded bull. I got quoted $1800 for the gearbox rebuild, the dog gear had shattered and taken some bevel gear teeth too, so I bought the parts $460 and repaired it myself. 9 weeks for some of the parts from Japan. Anyway, it’s back up and running.
Nice to see the Ute (its a truck here in the USA 😂) and trailer loaded up and ready to go.😉👍
Loaded high, proof that money does grow on trees eh.
Good to see business is going well 👌🪵🪓🔥
Hey Marty. That was a busy time. We ended up selling out of wood in June. The double split bags are still selling now, a few bags a week brings a few $$ in
Great video 👍 I always run my outboard tilt unlocked on the river for a better chance if i hit something carry a spare prop
Hi, thanks for the positive comment. It’s typical, when I damaged it I was going slow with hardly any throttle. The damage was a smashed dog clutch that then damaged bevel gear teeth. Knowing what I know now it was never going to be a bush fix, even if I had tools with me. Ah well, a good adventure anyway.
@TheRuralProject yeah there was no fixing it on the water
I live in Australia and the sounds of the birds sounds so much like home❤
Yeah. Beautiful eh. Love it. And when they come into roost at night wow, put the ear plugs in.
There is a face of a baby after the third cut if you look at the log still being held up. That’s some religious type stuff
Jeez I see it too. Baby log, baby face. I can assure you, no babies were hurt during the production of this video. 😂
@ call in the priest
Life is an adventure. Glad you both made it back home safely 😉👍
few blisters and achy muscles, but all part of the adventure. Thanks for watching.
Dónde se puede conseguir esa hacha
Hi, these are sold in all local hardware stores here in Australia. You can check Fiskars website for local suppliers or buy via eBay. Good luck finding one, you won’t be disappointed
Mornin' Chris, Outstandin' adventure indeed... At the start I thought you were with Rob Parsons, but then shortly after realized it was yur son... Yeah, I think It's killer to break-up the monotony and do somethin' different. Nice lil trip up the mighty Murray, A lil drama and a touch of suspence makes for a wicked cool video... Beautiful country Mate, do the water systems have more than carp??? Or is that all you happened to land in that trip??? Ya know while I was watchin' I noticed you didn't have a trollin' motor, kinda nice to have for those snaggy, and low spots in the river... I'd like to aquire somethin small to go out on the lakes round here, I think that would be pretty sweet... Well... you'll have to do somethin' like that again, A lil Aussie adventure. Far-out brother,... you stay cool and keep pushin' on,... Peace...
Hey gringo The Murray has some huge Murray cod, yellow bellies and plenty of other fish. The carp are just my fallback fish when I’m getting nothing else……. Always catch a carp on sweetcorn, bread or worms. A trolling motor is in the list of toys to get. It would make a massive difference. Thanks for watching and positive comments.
@@gringopines3476 - love a Rob & Levi video myself. Decent blokes that have over the years been kind helping me out with advise re: prospecting & gear.
@@Party-Marty just watched a rob parsons video, pretty cool stuff makes it look easy. Getting paid to be outside doing stuff you enjoy ....... hold on, I do that with firewood. Happy days.
Gringo, if you like rob parson have a look at UCzgN7WwmHRHmpWr55HKqrDQ @followingabrokencompass some great varied content, surfing, fishing, diving, gold prospecting
@@TheRuralProject - following a broken compass - another favourite 👌
On a positive note, you made it back to the ramp with plenty of fuel in reserve 😂
Ha ha, always a bright side if you look for it.
Excellent video mate. Bummer about the damage to the gearbag. I hope it wasn’t too big a repair/bill. Creating memories with your son - priceless Hehe, I go to Numurkah a bit & from there go to Berruga? Over the river from Cobden & play mini golf with my mate. Cool course 👌⛳️ How good is tinnie life ☺️ I love my little boat. Been tempted to take it for a spin up there too. Usually venture to Blue Rock Dam or Port Albert direction. Cheers for posting up 🍻
Blue rock dam looks good, I just had a google. Great memories, once it got dark it wasn’t all smiles, lots of “paddle harder” “keep it straight”, we were beat and over paddling, but it’s all part of the fun. I got quoted $1800 for the gearbox rebuild, the dog gear had shattered and taken some bevel gear teeth too, so I bought the parts $460 and repaired it myself. 9 weeks for some of the parts from Japan. Anyway, it’s back up and running.
@@TheRuralProject - well done. Yes, $1800 is a lot when you look at what’s in a gearbox… I managed to find a spare engine same as mine at a garage sale for $50 👌
@@Party-Marty and when I asked him how much for that motor and pointed to a 2nd hand one ( very similar ) and he said $2200 I only paid $7000 for the boat, trailer and motor. Go figure. $50 is a bargain, gotta keep your eyes open for those steals.
@@TheRuralProject 3.7m here $1500 all up. Been an awesome boat. My engine is only 15hp & early 1990’s I think. Skoots along good for what it is. Spare is 15hp early 1980’s. Mostly identical. It runs but has some tiller control problems.
Those European imports invading Aussie waters :( Will have to watch the last 20 minutes tomorrow so I could have more comments.
Ha ha. Look forward to them. Treasured fish in the uk mate, my family cannot believe we kill them here. They grow to about 60lbs, 27kg. Running a carp fishery is big business in the uk and Europe
Keep paddling, keep paddling. I expected the return trip was going to be slow because you were out of go go juice. I wasn't expecting you to break your boat.
A blind man would be glad to see that welding Chris. 1 day I'll have a gassed mig and will happily toss my gasless 1. It is convenient but it is appalling compared to a proper gassed mig.
I’ve never tried a gassed system. The welder I have can accept a gas bottle supply but I weld so infrequently I’ve never bothered setting it up. Makes a good excuse for poor welding too ….. blame the equipment. 😁
Right on Chris, Persistence pays off in the end. That Pizza looks great. Pizza here is like a cardboard cut out, with the minimal amount of fixins posable... Kinda like a big Pizza cookie... Got our first snow last night, woke-up to - 10* C.🥶... keep pushin on brother... Peace...
Always get it done eventually. -10 brrr, heading to 32deg C on Saturday….. summers coming !!
Mornin' Chris, now I know where all the real men are... lol... I don't know if I told you but my family wanted to move to Melbourne. It was that or Phoenix, I guess AZ. got the vote. Too bad, I could have been like you... Great job on the clean-up. At first i thought the the barn burnt down... Where the heck is Nick, Heath, and Jared when you need them. Always off in some big valley somewhere I guess. That video went quick, Is there a part 2.? Well they're callin' for rain tomorrow, so I gotta bring in some firewood. Stay cool Mate, peace from South of the border... OH! Poncho Villa says hi. lol... He's from CHIHUAHUA...
Hey Gringo, short and sweet video. Making firewood is only part of the process, there some serious clean up after each bucking session. Cooling off there, warming up here, bloody snakes are out. Dog had one in his mouth last week, lucky not bitten and then I was checking for holes in the snake fencing and came face to face with another one. Worst part of summer. They are particularly bad this year. Looka after yourself
Sr está entero fuertote
👍, thanks for watching, strong and a little stupid because I don't know when to stop
black gum is the same way, even on a hydraulic splitter it just about turns inside out. Many bets have been won/lost around a campfire by having a block of gum innocently waiting for a unknowing tuff guy with a few beers in him. lol
ha ha, love it, and the gum looks so innocent to those that don't know.
My uncle has this axe and we usually split ironbark or Redgum
Hi, thanks for watching. the x27 is a great axe, but for iron bark or red gum I’d get a Fiskars maul. Bit more weight behind the swing.
Learn how to swing an axe unless you have bad shoulders
I’ve been trying the axe swing, not too bad with the axe, but a bit hit n miss with the maul. My accuracy gets even worse swinging the maul. More practice needed …..👍
Right-on Chris, one less thing to worry about. And now like you say, off to the next endeavor... I'm not ( by any means ) A pro at anything wood realated. But i notice when you stack wood like a tower, it seems to dry way faster than anyother form of stacking. then after 2 or 3 weeks I'll restack it like you and the rest of the folks do... Stay cool brother and keep pushin' on... Peace...
Hey mate, I guess stacking a tower allows better airflow but more likely to tip over and not that space efficient. Lots of people not stacking anymore. I never found success with that approach but will try again in the future and try and ensure better airflow to the pile.
I also just bought a manual oiler for the mill as well, so let’s see how that works too
ooohhh, very good, I have to stop and oil the bar tip, but the extra oiler is the better way. Sounds like you are ready for a busy weekend.
Terrific video sir. I just got my Archer chain today it’s 36” and it’s a straight up milling chain but it’s not a skip tooth? So I think I’m going to do what you did, take every 3rd tooth out. I was using regular skip tooth chain for milling but it was regular cutting chain not milling and tbh it went terrific with regular cutting skip tooth, this is my 1st milling chain to bad it didn’t come as a skip.
thanks for the positive feedback, really appreciated. So you should have it nailed once you have modified it, skip tooth and milling cutting angles. Perfect. I think you really need the slip tooth with the bigger bars, eases the load on the saw. best of luck
Plenty of room for danger noodles underneath.
Like a snake lair, just call me Dr Doolittle, at 1 with the animals. 😁
Looks great on dry wood, those knotty bits, I wonder how it would go if they were green? I think that would make up my mind on kinetic splitters, thanks
Hey mate, in my opinion they are not for knotty twisted stuff, they are for speed only, they will split a knotty log, but it takes a few shots and you can tell its straining. I throw the twisted stuff to the side and use the hydraulic splitter on that.
When I was cutting wood fulltime my shower wasn't a shower. It was a bucket of water, heated by the fire in winter and a head to toe washdown with a facewasher. No sheds, no walls and no heating. Was always good to get back home of a Friday night for a proper clean and some indoor plumbing.
mate that made me laugh so much, have you heard of capstick comes home ? ua-cam.com/video/PmSA0W3mkn4/v-deo.html your commentary about how tough life was when you were younger reminded me of the comedy scene. I think they have a picture of you in the bath too. Enjoy the comedy and remember, your life was never as tough as those who worked in the Yorkshire mines in the 60's and 70's Anyway, 6 months later and I still have no running water, the bucket trick has been my only option, but I have to get running water for summer.
That video was funny. The Yorkshire mines sound almost as hard as work as cutting firewood in Balranald and then Oxley. In Balranald the F.I.L. and I originally stayed in a tent onsite. We did eventually move into a cabin at the caravan park and that was 5 star in comparison. When we started cutting in Oxley we were in a caravan, the washing up was similar to in that video except it was a bucket out in the sticks with the nearest building maybe 10km away. No photos of our living quarters from back then. A little bit of video got recorded on ua-cam.com/video/HZguPy_s-yY/v-deo.html . . The video starts off when I was wording on building the 2 saws in Eaglehawk around 1992 , the initial cutting in Balranald in 1993 and through until sometime probably in 1994 at Oxley (NSW). Ahhh to be young again.
Mornin' Chris, killer addition to the rural homested. Woke this mornin' to, - 2* C. Not a bad way to start the day. Got a fire goin', and all is good. Well mate, looks to me like you're on your way to the cabin lifestyle... Or what I like to call campin' in civilization... It's nice to have some comforts of home in the wilderness. After-all, we are civilized... Right??? Now that the toiletries are instaled, what's next? Maybe a comfortable place to prepare a meal? Sleeping's no issue, nothin an ole air matres can't handle for the time beein'. It's always good to see skippy, Oh, we have a new pet. I don't know what mix it is, I think it's part Velociraptor & Great White... 🦖🦈 Well I'm lookin' forward to the continuation, Stay cool & keep pushin' on brother... Peace...
Hey Gringo, minus 2 ….. that’s fresh, any snow in the ground yet ? The shed house is coming along nicely. Beds are sorted. A swag on an industrial shelf is just perfect. We have the barrel stove for the chilly nights and that works a treat. So I’m guessing the new pet is a dog, a wild beast of a thing.

I haven't seen a live danger noodle this spring. While riding the deadly treadly the last few weeks I have seen 3 deflated easter browns. If I have to see danger noodles I prefer to see them deflated. That red bellied black in the video is the only 1 I have seen around here. Generally it's the eastern browns and the black snakes are very tame in comparison. It's always good when the tamer venomous snake is also the far less deadly :/
Hi Alan, seems to be the year for them. I’m seeing them too regular, my neighbour where I live had a tiger snake in the backyard last week. 3 young kids playing in the garden too. Very lucky.
Se inizi dai lati fai meno fatica❤❤.
So true, but the challenge was to split down the middle. Thanks for watching
Grande lavoro❤.@@TheRuralProject
That's a bummer. The splitter is down already. Hopefully, the parts are under warranty. If not cheap to replace.
Hi Daniel. Luckily the fix is not too bad. Video coming soon.
Too bad that kinetic machine is broken but I remember you saying you were unsure how long it would go before it shit the bed. Is it an expensive fix? We're just starting winter here in Canada, I saw a few snowflakes at around 4am
Winter coming for you and summer coming for me. Luckily it’s not as expensive a fix as I first feared, the fix is coming up in a future video. I’d forgotten how slow hydraulic splitters were until I had to go back to using it. Thanks for watching.
Mornin' Chris, yeah sorry bout ole Bruce Lee... I guess we all get a crooked wing every now and again... But what's this brute, A 50-ton " Treeasouris-Rex "... Hokey-Smokes... Well looks like you got a lot done in the wood yard mate, keep chippin' away... " Poco Por Poco " little-by-little... Yesterday I woke up to 2* C. Today not to bad, around 7* C. So, yeah Jack Frost is kinda nippin'... I won't say where... Stay cool brother, we'll be seein' ya on the next one fer-sher... Peace...
2 deg and 7 deg - 🥶 Warming up nicely here. Great time of the year. Days getting longer but not too hot yet. The ole faithful splitter …… it’s done some work and still going strong. Poco por poco, so true.
Awesome video 👍🏽 Where did you get the glass door from?
Hi Sam, no glass door, just the door removed from the hinge. Things didn’t go very well, check out the full build, that bright paint burned off even though it’s high temperature paint. Thanks for watching.
id do a 360 swing rather then what hes doing, espeacially with an 8lb maul . Jesus
I've been trying the 360 swing, but not totally convinced its better but I'm going to keep trying, its a heck of a lot more physical I know that for sure.
