I understand what you mean. For me the richness of the myth is derived from Tolkien’s incredibly detailed world as depicted in the Silmarillion which finds expression in LOTR. It all fits together. Over decades Tolkien devised an original, convincing mythology. A staggering imaginative work.

Venkat S She is a Valar of not only sadness, but wisdom and pity. Thats why Gandalf ended up becoming the most compassionate and the wisest of Maiar. Even before he came to Middle Earth, he often visits despairing or sad Elves, and renewed the spirit. This is probably why he was sent in the first place by Manwe.

There's such rich background lore in Tolkien's work. Wish that Tolkien had created more novels. While I greatly enjoy the movies and video games that do try to expand on Tolkien's writings, I just feel sometimes only the artist that first created the work can do it justice.
Jacob Clark tolkien does have many other great works of literature I would recommend reading. their is much to this lore anyway and it was more of a hobby for him. he wrote the hobbit as a kids book. he always thought his lotr work was childish compared to his other well known work that some tend to ignore. check into it. :)
I know exactly how you feel, Took a couple years for me and my wife to get our extensive collection of tolkien lore but very much worth it. Hurin and his brother Huor are some of my favorite. It is believed that Hurin was the greatest swordsman that ever lived. The battle of unnumbered tears is a testament to how much middle earth loved him and believed in his cause.
My favourite is Varda. I just love her association with the stars, and the poems about her are so beautiful. I also love Mandos, he is so strange and otherwordly, his speech during the couincils is so simple and every word feels like it's very important.
Ulmo and nienna are my favorite so are tulkas and Varda love the Stars and night sky , Ulmo is my favorite valor love the sea and feel of the sun on a sandy beach especially if in arda sounds great would loved to be a elven chief with a port city on a island off of mainland living in Coral reef stone and wooden homes with a love for the sea my people being more physically stronger and tanner than regular elves and the men have goatee style beards and woman have Sapphire, emerald and opal eye colors and have a big natural sand harbor to come and go , fishing the sea for fish and whales for meat and oil and bones to make tools , building material and decorations etc, eating succulent seafood and eating wild berries, herbs, nuts ,coconuts, and fruit all over the island, with statues of mermaids, fish etc and a awe-inspiring temple dedicated to ulmo our lord , protector and provider of the seas and islands blessing us with the beautiful ocean paradise, and the gift of giant dolphins the size of a blue whale with glimmering blue, purple or orange-yellow skins with different hue of colors and we ride them where we want go fishing, exploring or just travel the seas have the time of our lives lol

I kind of favor Ulmo, Master Of Waters. I believe Goldberry is his daughter, the Riverman's daughter. Ulmo also played music and spread it through the waters. Osse was the dangerous one. I have read and re-read the works of Tolkien since the early 70s. You can imagine my joy when The Silmarillion came out.
Wow, thank you for creating this representation. I have been a Tolkien fan for decades and appreciate this illustration of the Silmarillion. It gives me a way to present this great story to my grandchildren! I will be subscribing to this channel and can see I have to catch up on previous releases!
The idea of them was probably infuenced by the archangels of the Bible. There are said to be seven of them that are before the Lord and in His presence. With Michael as the leader (Prince of princes). They are also believed to be the heads of their kind/order. Seraphim, Cherubim etc. Lucifer (Melkor) was once anong the greats and fell from his estate, leading a multitude of lesser spirits after him. Incidentally he is said to be a great musician (His pipes and tabrets were "built into him in the day of his creation). I would say Tolkien borrowed from a few different sources but the Biblical influence is undoubtedly there.
Far from it... melkor is lucifer while the other valars are arc angels... the last war should also represent the book of revelation. The armagedon good vs evil. 🤷♂️
Maybe somebody in Norse in first place had the same imagination as Tolkien, so started the Norse mythology, that got so popular in their whole country then.
So nice to hear this! I adore the Silmarillion, and have little patience for those who deride it as unreadable, or as merely the inferior product of his son. The Silmarillion was already "complete" around 1930, as found in Lost Tales. JRRT's great challenge late in life was trying to revise it to be compatible with Lord of the Rings, that's the part he never quite completed, and became his son's great task. If not for the Silmarillion I would not have been able to appreciate Unfinished Tales, Lost Tales, nor the other volumes of JRRT's lifetime labors that his son, blessed with such a long life, managed to publish. After reading the Silmarillion, wasn't it stunning to re-read Lord of the Rings and see all the things you didn't notice the first time?
The Silmarillion is my favourite piece of Tolkien's work. The LOTR takes place over the span of what - a year at most? The Silmarillion is the history of middle earth over 1000's and 1000's of years, which much more in depth characters, stories like Beren and Luthien, and countless battles of sorrow resulting in whole generations and kingdoms being wiped out. The LOTR is a masterpiece, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Silmarillion.
@@naders5 After seeing how Amazon are butchering Tolkien's lore in the abomination that is the rings of power - do we really anyone bringing the Silmarillion to screen? Even large parts of the Lord of the Rings movies were highly inaccurate, or just missed big portions of the story out. I did enjoy watching the LOTR movies - but they all had massive flaws.

It’s amazing to think that a being as powerful as Melkor, who could raise mountains by mere thought, could be physically constrained by any other being.
A part of that is weakness of taking physical form. The Valar and Maiar are at their strongest when they are not in the physical world. So taking physical form and engaging in the world means to be constricted to the limitations of a mortal life-form. That's the reason both Melkor and Sauron could be defeated despite being immortal.
@@Feanor916 Melkor’s power is in his ability to twist and corrupt, in his ability to deceive and trick. Just with this skillset he is able to defy all of the other Valar and Eru himself. But in a physical contest he is maimed by a mere elf and restrained by Tulkas. Tulkas in a mano e mano contest is the most powerful Vala. However he could not defy Eru and the other Valar in the same way that Melkor did, because he has a very limited skillset and is unable to bend others to his will like Melkor. This is what makes Melkor the most powerful.

I like this mythology because it is very unique when compared to historical mythologies. I have always seen this mythology as a double leveled mono-polytheist religion. It is always compared to God and the Angels, but I disagree. The Valar are very similar to the greek gods. Manwe - Zeus, Ulmo - Poseidon, Mandos - Hades, Yavanna - Aphodites, Aule - Ares, etc, plus Orome - Odin, Tulkas - Thor. They make the polytheistic level of the religion. They are the gods that shaped the world. But they didn't created it. Eru did. He is the God of Gods, the monotheistic level of this religion.
It reminds me a lot of Hindu myth (I was brought up a Hindu). The gods of the myth range from elemental gods like Indra (God of Rain), Agni (fire), and Vayu (wind) to more abstract concepts like Yama (the god of both death and justice) and Kubera (wealth). But in most Hindu myth, these are considered subservient to the trinity of Bramha (creation), Vishnu (preservation), and Shiva (Destruction) and the trinity in turn is a manifestation of Sat ("That which is") which is considered to be the fundamental truth that is difficult to describe. Apart from this, each god has a female equivalent, and the primordial energy that forms the core of each god's power (shakti) is considered to be female.
Azimut As someone else said Odin and Thor come from the Norse myths, I would suggest those two gods be replaced with: Orome = Male version of Artemis, Tulkas = Ares; and Aule be replaced with Vulcan/Hephaestus. Although I agree that Tulkas does have some of the traits of Thor = strength greater than any other god, limited intellect and temper. It's also likely that Tokien was familiar with other pagan pantheons native to the British Isles and borrowed a bit from them. Il H I am also going to note that I did a personal study of the world's "pagan" pantheons and they often had certain roles in common: for instance a sky god who was responsible for bringing rain and thunder, a sun god who was responsible for bringing the sun up each day, a male creator god who created non-living things, a female creator goddess who created living things, a moon goddess, a sea god or goddess, a underworld god or goddess who ruled over the dead and several others.
@Nuggies Tbh, thats just Tolkien bs. Sadness, grief and pity are all trash. Sadness shortens your lifespan and overall is emotionally unhealthy for extended periods of time. Grief is only good for a very short time if you have no other way to deal with the emotions of loss BUT instantly finding something you like that replaces the thing/someone you lost is generally much better. Pity is the only option thats actually useful because it drives the powerful to help the weak - problem is that those who can help the most usually have no pity and those who have pity usually dont have enough resources to help so its kinda wasted.
@@Dark_Voice And there's where Nienna comes in. She teaches the others deep pity and compassion - keeping the other Valar from becoming too high or proud or selfish. In that way, she's the only thing keeping them (and us) from becoming like Melkor - whose pride led him to break the harmony and forsake the others for himself.
Great work you did here, it will be great when you make one for each Valar. My favorite Vala is Aulë; "...but the delight and pride of Aulë is in the deed of making, and in the thing made, and neither in possession nor in his own mastery; wherefore he gives and hoards not, and is free from care, passing ever on to some new work."
I don't know if I like them, they are bit too greedy but also capable of great things. Aulë love, I think was creating things, and I believe much of this love reflected in the dwarves too, however they had a lot of imperfections too, as Illuvatar kept them the way Aulë had made, not knowing what a living thing would behave, I think.
I really appreciate the hard work and thoughtfulness that you put into these extremely interesting and informative close looks at the various aspects of Tolkiens work. They are really high quality productions which are entertaining as well as being fascinating.
Actually, I always saw him as the guy who was second best at everything, surrounded by those who were better than him at almost everything he turned his hand towards. While there is certainly value in being the second best smith, gardener, hunter, etc, imagine the frustration that an ambitious, ego-driven person would feel. Melkor: "Look everyone! I made this new necklace, and it's the most beautiful thing ever!" [Ooohing and Aaaahing from the Valar, Maiar and Eldar] Aule: [takes the necklace] "Wow, that's really amazing. Here, let me see it!" [a few taps with a hammer and adjustments later] "What if we made it like this instead?" [Lourder oohing and aaahing from the Valar, Maiar and Eldar] Manwe: "Yeah, that's even better! Good work, Aule!" Melkor: [fumes] It doesn't excuse him by any means, but it makes him more understandable in some ways. Being second best at most things, he could have found new ways to merge the works of the Valar and Maiar to new heights, but instead he could only see the sleights.
Appreciate this channel. Love the whole revelry-less-expansion on the myth. Re-tellings just make the lore seem even deeper although everything is ever present and accessible.
I love LOTR and the Hobbit but my favorite book of all time is The Silmarillion. So that being said, I always get excited when you do videos of pre-Hobbit book stuff.

'm not sure why Varda is often portrayed as dark a haired queen of the night. In fact, if Estë (the one who actually loves the night and rests at daytime) didn't reason with her, she would have put both the sun and moon to be in the same sky always, thus erasing the night completely and letting them outshine everything she did before. That doesn't say "Queen of Stars" especially to me. She's rather the embodiment of light as a whole but "Queen of Stars" is how the Elves first got to know her work, so the title stayed on her. That's why I would rather portray her in all white, including white hair. And with a light shining like it does through a shell or from a lamp. Also, Manwë is literally described as very blue, with a lot of things sapphire. My source is HoME: Morgoth's Ring. There are a lot of details and even dialogue of the Valar that is not found in the Silmarillion.

I cannot see how one person can create a world just as detailed and spectacular as our own if not more so. It's as though we are simply hearing the history of another place with all of the cultures and languages intact.

He wanted a villain to do what Morgoth did in the Silmarillion at the height of his powers, and later on and keep on doing it. He also wanted the villain to scale up in power, not down, as Morgoth did, but keep all the scheming and manipulation.
The mostly helpful information is interrupted at 0:11:15 by dangerous absurdity. It flatly contradicts what Tolkien says in the antepenultimate paragraph of the Ainulindale: _[W]hen they desire to clothe themselves the Valar take upon them forms some as of male and some as of female; for that difference of temper they had even from their beginning, and it is but bodied forth in the choice of each, not made by the choice, even as with us male and female may be shown by the raiment but is not made thereby._ So, the ainur were created male and female by Illuvatar himself. Later, when those known as the Valar chose to make bodies for themselves after entering into Arda, the males clothed themselves with male bodies, and the females clothed themselves with female bodies. Somehow, the author of this video has decided that the ainur ‘only took on gender when they came to Aman as they saw fit through their own temperaments and clothing’. Not only is this plainly false, as we have seen, it is also absurd. If a people without gender were to create genders for themselves based on their temperaments and clothing, then one would expect a chaos of incoherent genders, not the normal division into male and female that we find among the Valar.

I have read and re-read the works of Tolkien since the early 70s. You can imagine my joy when The Silmarillion came out.

Wow, thank you for creating this representation. I have been a Tolkien fan for decades and appreciate this illustration of the Silmarillion. It gives me a way to present this great story to my grandchildren! I will be subscribing to this channel and can see I have to catch up on previous releases!
The Valar seems to me a non-degraded , non-perverted, and morally good version of the degenerate gods of the Greeks.
The idea of them was probably infuenced by the archangels of the Bible. There are said to be seven of them that are before the Lord and in His presence. With Michael as the leader (Prince of princes). They are also believed to be the heads of their kind/order. Seraphim, Cherubim etc. Lucifer (Melkor) was once anong the greats and fell from his estate, leading a multitude of lesser spirits after him. Incidentally he is said to be a great musician (His pipes and tabrets were "built into him in the day of his creation). I would say Tolkien borrowed from a few different sources but the Biblical influence is undoubtedly there.
Far from it... melkor is lucifer while the other valars are arc angels... the last war should also represent the book of revelation. The armagedon good vs evil. 🤷♂️
The Valar were based off the ancient gods and goddesses. Not judea.

The Simarillion is the Masterpiece of Tolkien. It’s so good, he didn’t have to finish it! Christopher pieced it together.
So nice to hear this! I adore the Silmarillion, and have little patience for those who deride it as unreadable, or as merely the inferior product of his son.
The Silmarillion was already "complete" around 1930, as found in Lost Tales. JRRT's great challenge late in life was trying to revise it to be compatible with Lord of the Rings, that's the part he never quite completed, and became his son's great task.
If not for the Silmarillion I would not have been able to appreciate Unfinished Tales, Lost Tales, nor the other volumes of JRRT's lifetime labors that his son, blessed with such a long life, managed to publish.
After reading the Silmarillion, wasn't it stunning to re-read Lord of the Rings and see all the things you didn't notice the first time?
It's just a pity Christopher won't let them come to screen.
The Silmarillion is my favourite piece of Tolkien's work. The LOTR takes place over the span of what - a year at most? The Silmarillion is the history of middle earth over 1000's and 1000's of years, which much more in depth characters, stories like Beren and Luthien, and countless battles of sorrow resulting in whole generations and kingdoms being wiped out. The LOTR is a masterpiece, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Silmarillion.
@@naders5 After seeing how Amazon are butchering Tolkien's lore in the abomination that is the rings of power - do we really anyone bringing the Silmarillion to screen? Even large parts of the Lord of the Rings movies were highly inaccurate, or just missed big portions of the story out. I did enjoy watching the LOTR movies - but they all had massive flaws.

It’s amazing to think that a being as powerful as Melkor, who could raise mountains by mere thought, could be physically constrained by any other being.
hobanagerik The ‘being’ your talking about is Tulkas, the strongest Valar.
A part of that is weakness of taking physical form. The Valar and Maiar are at their strongest when they are not in the physical world. So taking physical form and engaging in the world means to be constricted to the limitations of a mortal life-form.
That's the reason both Melkor and Sauron could be defeated despite being immortal.

Melkor’s power is in his ability to twist and corrupt, in his ability to deceive and trick. Just with this skillset he is able to defy all of the other Valar and Eru himself. But in a physical contest he is maimed by a mere elf and restrained by Tulkas.
Tulkas in a mano e mano contest is the most powerful Vala. However he could not defy Eru and the other Valar in the same way that Melkor did, because he has a very limited skillset and is unable to bend others to his will like Melkor. This is what makes Melkor the most powerful.

I like this mythology because it is very unique when compared to historical mythologies. I have always seen this mythology as a double leveled mono-polytheist religion. It is always compared to God and the Angels, but I disagree. The Valar are very similar to the greek gods. Manwe - Zeus, Ulmo - Poseidon, Mandos - Hades, Yavanna - Aphodites, Aule - Ares, etc, plus Orome - Odin, Tulkas - Thor. They make the polytheistic level of the religion. They are the gods that shaped the world. But they didn't created it. Eru did. He is the God of Gods, the monotheistic level of this religion.
It reminds me a lot of Hindu myth (I was brought up a Hindu). The gods of the myth range from elemental gods like Indra (God of Rain), Agni (fire), and Vayu (wind) to more abstract concepts like Yama (the god of both death and justice) and Kubera (wealth). But in most Hindu myth, these are considered subservient to the trinity of Bramha (creation), Vishnu (preservation), and Shiva (Destruction) and the trinity in turn is a manifestation of Sat ("That which is") which is considered to be the fundamental truth that is difficult to describe. Apart from this, each god has a female equivalent, and the primordial energy that forms the core of each god's power (shakti) is considered to be female.

As someone else said Odin and Thor come from the Norse myths, I would suggest those two gods be replaced with: Orome = Male version of Artemis, Tulkas = Ares; and Aule be replaced with Vulcan/Hephaestus. Although I agree that Tulkas does have some of the traits of Thor = strength greater than any other god, limited intellect and temper. It's also likely that Tokien was familiar with other pagan pantheons native to the British Isles and borrowed a bit from them.

I am also going to note that I did a personal study of the world's "pagan" pantheons and they often had certain roles in common: for instance a sky god who was responsible for bringing rain and thunder, a sun god who was responsible for bringing the sun up each day, a male creator god who created non-living things, a female creator goddess who created living things, a moon goddess, a sea god or goddess, a underworld god or goddess who ruled over the dead and several others.

i find it unfair how their power manifest. For example Ulmo controls the deep Sea and has amazing power, Nayana on other hand cries all day.
@Nuggies Tbh, thats just Tolkien bs. Sadness, grief and pity are all trash. Sadness shortens your lifespan and overall is emotionally unhealthy for extended periods of time. Grief is only good for a very short time if you have no other way to deal with the emotions of loss BUT instantly finding something you like that replaces the thing/someone you lost is generally much better.
Pity is the only option thats actually useful because it drives the powerful to help the weak - problem is that those who can help the most usually have no pity and those who have pity usually dont have enough resources to help so its kinda wasted.

She teaches the others deep pity and compassion - keeping the other Valar from becoming too high or proud or selfish.
In that way, she's the only thing keeping them (and us) from becoming like Melkor - whose pride led him to break the harmony and forsake the others for himself.

I don't know if I like them, they are bit too greedy but also capable of great things. Aulë love, I think was creating things, and I believe much of this love reflected in the dwarves too, however they had a lot of imperfections too, as Illuvatar kept them the way Aulë had made, not knowing what a living thing would behave, I think.

Nonetheless they will have need of wood.
The dwarves are they way they are because Aule made them in secret without his wife's approval so she did not bestow them any of her traits.
I really appreciate the hard work and thoughtfulness that you put into these extremely interesting and informative close looks at the various aspects of Tolkiens work. They are really high quality productions which are entertaining as well as being fascinating.

Actually, I always saw him as the guy who was second best at everything, surrounded by those who were better than him at almost everything he turned his hand towards. While there is certainly value in being the second best smith, gardener, hunter, etc, imagine the frustration that an ambitious, ego-driven person would feel.

It doesn't excuse him by any means, but it makes him more understandable in some ways. Being second best at most things, he could have found new ways to merge the works of the Valar and Maiar to new heights, but instead he could only see the sleights.
Melkor is the one playing the off note but actually makes the composition genius.
Appreciate this channel. Love the whole revelry-less-expansion on the myth. Re-tellings just make the lore seem even deeper although everything is ever present and accessible.

I think the best way to learn about the different tribes of the elves is to read the Silmarillion. It's very well described there :)

'm not sure why Varda is often portrayed as dark a haired queen of the night. In fact, if Estë (the one who actually loves the night and rests at daytime) didn't reason with her, she would have put both the sun and moon to be in the same sky always, thus erasing the night completely and letting them outshine everything she did before. That doesn't say "Queen of Stars" especially to me. She's rather the embodiment of light as a whole but "Queen of Stars" is how the Elves first got to know her work, so the title stayed on her.
That's why I would rather portray her in all white, including white hair. And with a light shining like it does through a shell or from a lamp. Also, Manwë is literally described as very blue, with a lot of things sapphire.
My source is HoME: Morgoth's Ring. There are a lot of details and even dialogue of the Valar that is not found in the Silmarillion.

(Awesome channel intro btw) Anyway The Valar are honestly some of my most favorite Angels/Gods in all of Literature, and I love how Tolkien took inspiration from Christian beliefs and Greek Mythology in the creation of his beautiful Mythology and the Valar themselves. I love how once again, you go so deep into explaining them and I am so glad that you done this video about them. And I got to wonder: What's your favorite Vala? For me it would be Aule because I love how he created the Dwarves and just his crafting and smithing in General. Anyway loved this video and can't wait for the next one!!! :)

I really want to see Melkor/Morgoth in a movie.
I cannot see how one person can create a world just as detailed and spectacular as our own if not more so. It's as though we are simply hearing the history of another place with all of the cultures and languages intact.

What happened to Meliane after the dwarves killed Thingol
That is a really good question. I looked it up and it seems that she visited Beren and Lúthien for a time, before going back to Valinor.
Melian told Beren and Luthien about Thingol's slaying, afterwards she returned to Valinor.

He said that Morgoth did not go as far.
He wanted a villain to do what Morgoth did in the Silmarillion at the height of his powers, and later on and keep on doing it.
He also wanted the villain to scale up in power, not down, as Morgoth did, but keep all the scheming and manipulation.

The mostly helpful information is interrupted at 0:11:15 by dangerous absurdity. It flatly contradicts what Tolkien says in the antepenultimate paragraph of the Ainulindale:
_[W]hen they desire to clothe themselves the Valar take upon them forms some as of male and some as of female; for that difference of temper they had even from their beginning, and it is but bodied forth in the choice of each, not made by the choice, even as with us male and female may be shown by the raiment but is not made thereby._
So, the ainur were created male and female by Illuvatar himself. Later, when those known as the Valar chose to make bodies for themselves after entering into Arda, the males clothed themselves with male bodies, and the females clothed themselves with female bodies.
Somehow, the author of this video has decided that the ainur ‘only took on gender when they came to Aman as they saw fit through their own temperaments and clothing’. Not only is this plainly false, as we have seen, it is also absurd. If a people without gender were to create genders for themselves based on their temperaments and clothing, then one would expect a chaos of incoherent genders, not the normal division into male and female that we find among the Valar.
I always knew lord of the rings world was impressive but wow. An entire universe or reality even was made in these texts. Just amazing
