Hi, do you know how to eliminate sample names from the pads. There is a sample name on the pad even though no sample is on the SD card. I would like to delete the name but could not find any information about this, many thanks
why is there no demo of live recording ? a demo of playing samples that have already been loaded is not really helpful . record sound through the audio - in, and employ those sounds directly during a song , or is that beyond the capabilities of the mpx - 16 sd unit ?
Hi Raja. You can adjust the playback speed of the samples up/down, which will change the tempo. But it will also affect the pitch and the tone of the sample similar to speeding up or slowing down tape speed. -_Daniel_
Some of us want a desktop sampler because buying that thing for 150$ is cheaper than buying a pc that doesnt try to kill itself everytime you boot up ableton
What you can't do with the MPX16: You can't change the MIDI channel, it's fixed to channel 1 in & out. You can't organize your samples on the SD-card, all samples MUST be in the root directory. You can't put more than 512 samples in the root directory, otherwise the SD-card won't be recognized. You can't switch the samples while playing, because of the long time to load samples. Don't expect too much from this device ...
Hi Clash Clash Bang Bang, your specs are accurate. You can though, organize samples on the SD card by using the first two characters of each file name to keep them in a specific order. AA, AB, AC ... BA, BC, BD, etc. That would allow 26 groups with 26 files per group. Yes, it would cost you one or two character spaces. But, if the price is right for someone, it does a lot for its price, size, and weight. Thanks for watching!
Hi Tim. You can change the pitch of a drum loop sample by speeding up or slowing down its playback speed. But that will also change the tempo and timbre of that sample by the exact same amount. If you're looking for something that can change the pitch of a sample but not the tempo, or change the tempo but not the pitch, you'll need a much more powerful device. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

I have the MPX8 and in retrospect I probably should have bought the 16 - the reason is that I thought the MPX product would allow you to have different pages or scenes ... it does not. There is only 1 bank of 16 custom sounds available for you to program. But overall I'm happy with the product performance , apart from a very slow loading of the data from the SD card, but if you start it before your set, you can have it all ready in time for the performance.

MPX8 and MPX16 are similar in that they create external kits in the \KITS directory on the SD card as KIT001.KIT, KIT002.KIT, etc. But the .KIT format of MPX8 is not the same as the .KIT format of MPX16, so MPX16 does not read MPX8 .KIT files and MPX8 does not read MPX16 .KIT files. Solution: you need to create MPX16 compatible .KIT files with MPX16.
OK, in that case, set Thresh to Off. Now, pressing the ValueDial will start sampling regardless of the sound's volume. Just press it right before the sound. You may have a little pre-roll silence in the sample, but you can easily set the Sample Start Point (St) to exactly when the sound starts. Hope that helps!
OK, is there any chance that the pad has its Sample Start Point (St) set to a value higher than zero? That value would stay with the pad even if you dialed in a different sample.
Hi Cheap Noise. The MPX16 is only designed to use MIDI notes to trigger specific pads. But it will not stretch any of those pad sounds across the keys. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

DAMN ! been looking for something like this ever since I retired my Akai S950 & S1000 years ago...... useful editing interface & it records too ! and for a real bargain price ....... what`s not to like ? ......... am sold on one of these, oh yes
After buying it I just found out what`s not to like : I found ways around all it`s numerous issues including resetting when in amongst my midi chain setup ) and even expertly made my own drumkit samples using SOundforge software on the PC instead of the flaky conversion software ..... only to find out that it defo has stuttering/latency issues when used with other midi gear especially other midi drum sources as it always lags behind a bit even when it`s at the beginning of the midi chain. In the end they won`t update this issue either as it turns out to have been years since Numark ( using the Akai name ) have bothered to fix anything on it. After workarounds for the other issues the latency thing was a bit of a punch in the guts after I thought that I finally had a useful tool !
what about beat matching... if i have gears and i want to have it beat matched with it... will it adjust the beets of my sample? and the quality it comes out... as well, is it pro?
Hi Adityo. I pretty much showed all the featured it has. You'll want to look at devices that are priced three to four times higher than this one. Thanks for watching!
Hi SixtheSense. You can trim the Start and End points of each Sample, but if you're asking about real-time chop effects you'll need a more complex sample player. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Can I unassign some samples from one of my custom kits so it loads faster...? Sometimes it takes about a minute to load my samples which is too long...
@@sweetwater This way the pad will still be orange and this is confusing! I also found out that if I load "mono" samples the loading time is way smaller.
Hi Vihul. It depends. If you're using each pad to play a single drum/percussion/note, then you can speed up, or slow down, your real-time performance. If you're playing individual pad hits from an external MIDI sequencer, then you can speed up or slow down. But... if a single pad is playing a recorded groove, the only way to change tempo would be to raise or lower the pitch of the pad's playback. And that's probably not the way you'd want to do it. Thanks for watching!
Hello, Can anyone say whether the MPX16 is really (still) stuck on only one MIDI channel? I'd like to use three MPX16's for live sequencing with the multiple stereo outs but that's a dead issue if they only fire off the same MIDI channel. Nothing can be found about MIDI channel selection in Akai's downloadable user guide. >>> TYVM !
..and if you want to drive three MPX16s from one MIDI Out, you will also need a MIDI Thru Box because the MPX16 does not have a MIDI Soft Thru function.
Thanks for sharing Daniel ! this sampler is great !!!! Quick question: if I need more effects Is there any way to add to the same panel , let say 32 ? from 16 key buttons is there any switch like the memory in your car stereo you use the 16 buttons plus you press "other switch" and those same buttons allow other 16 effects.. thanks !
Hey just curious... On that Latin groove you had a conga loop then you added a cowbell. Was that quantized, or do I need to hit the cowbell pad on the exact downbeat to match the conga groove? Thanks.
Hi purplevelvetchair, it is the latter. There is no quantization or synchronization between the pads. They are all triggered in real time. Thanks for watching!
Does this have multiple banks or will I need to reload every single time I need to change something? My main use for this right now is only pre recorded voice lines. Any suggestions?
Hi Kyle. Each change to a new set of pad samples requires some reload time. If they're all fairly short samples, it will load quickly. If they're all very long stereo samples, it could take a minute or more to change banks. Thanks for watching.
hi Daniel, do you experience a latency problem when assign a sample to the trigger pad from SD card? I have seen at least 0.5 sec delay when I hit the trigger pad. This is crazy. That's means I can't play live performance with band.
Hi Truc. Are you certain that the sample starts *exactly* at 0? Or is there a quiet space in front of the sample? It may be hard to tell if you created it on the MPX16, but you can always look at the sample and edit it on a computer to get the start very tight.
@@sweetwater thanks for help. I found that there was a 0.5 sec silent at begining ò the sample. I used Audacity to trimmed it. It works... no more latency.
Hi Billy, the MPX16 can play back 16-bit, mono or stereo WAV samples. They can have a sample rate of 48, 44.1, 32, 22.05, or 11.205 kHz. So... if you can get your Akai samples into the above format, you should be able to load them. But you certainly would have to make all other parameter settings by hand after a sample was loaded. Thanks for watching!
The MIDI handling of the Akai MPX16 depends on the firmware version. fw v1.0.7 (not available for download from Akai website): receive on all MIDI channels (=Omni), send on MIDI channel 10. fw v1.0.18 (2015?, no longer available for download from the Akai website): Only receives on MIDI channel 1, send on MIDI channel 10. Probably cannot handle MIDI messages received with Running Status. "The MPX16 will now receive on MIDI channel 1, and send on MIDI channel 10. It now reboots/resets on a regular basis when used in a MIDI setup."(Brian Lewis) "With MIDI Running Status off, so far I can send the MPX16 a huge amount of MIDI information without the reboot problem."(Joseph Place) fw v1.0.19 (made on 25 August 2015, released on 17 May 2016, downloadable from the Akai website): Received on DIN MIDI In (channel 1 only): handles MIDI messages sent with Running Status. Note On (90H nnH vvH, where vv=01..7F, the volume is always determined by the velocity received, even if the pad velocity is set to Off), Note Off (80H nnH vvH). After loading a kit, the MPX16 by default incorrectly handles "90H nnH 00H" messages (for example, the Roland A-33 sends such a message when a key is released): for Hold and Loop pads, playback does not stop immediately, but plays the sound sample to the end. First solution: after each kit load, press one of the pads of the MPX16. Second solution: after each kit load, send an 80H nnH vvH message to the MPX16. Program Change messages: no reply. CC7 messages: no reply. Send to DIN MIDI Out (channel 10 only): always sends with status byte (=Running Status is not used). Note On (99H nnH vvH, where vv=01..7F. If pad velocity is set to Off, then vv=7F), Poly Aftertouch (A9H nnH ppH), Note Off (89H nnH vvH, with release velocity. If pad velocity is set to Off, then vv=7F). Program Change messages: does not send. Active Sensing messages: does not send. Soft Thru: no. USB: receives like DIN MIDI In (=channel 1 only) and sends like DIN MIDI Out (=channel 10 only), but also receives Program Change messages on channel 1. Program Change 1 (C0H 00H) and Program Change 11..128 (C0H 0AH .. C0H 7FH) messages cause the MPX16 to load the i01 kit. Program Change 2..10 (C0H 01H .. C0H 09H) messages cause the MPX16 to load the corresponding internal kit (i02..i10).
Tip: if you want to control an Akai MPX16 (firmware v1.0.19) with the button/pad of an Edirol PCR or Roland A-PRO series MIDI controller, program the button/pad with the Free Message "80 nn 00 90 nn DT", where nn=Note number in hexadecimal, Date Type="DT0: 7bit", Min Value="0", Max Value="127", Button Mode="Unlatch".
Hi lewchootrain, the MPX16 can send/receive MIDI via the USB port and, in that way, could be used with various software applications. But it does not send/receive audio via the USB port. Thanks for watching!
can you change "kits" in Real Time? suppose i have 16 assigned PADS, is there a switch to change to the other 16 PADS with different sammples? or are they gonna have to "load" again from the SD card, taking loads of time..?
Hi Sameer, I pulled the sounds from other libraries we've made at Sweetwater. But they are not included with the MPX16. Since it reads standard .WAV files, there are literally multiple millions of sounds out there to use. Thanks for watching!
Hi ru. Each pad is assigned to a MIDI Note #. So you can play each pad via a keyboard, but you can't play a pad's sound chromatically across the keyboard. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Hi Gillette, I have two different MPX16 manuals. One says you can have 48MB total on all 16 pads. Another says 60MB. Assuming 10MB per minute for 44.1kHz, 16-bit, stereo recordings, you should be able to get a total of 4.8 minutes or 6 minutes. You can double that if you use Mono, and even more if you use a lower sampling rate. Thanks for watching!
hi im thinking of using this for breakbeat loops and vocals for a hardware setup, does it sync to external clock and even speed up/slowdown with tempo changes? thanks

@@kiskadar69 thanks for replying 2 years later!
DAMN ! been looking for something like this ever since I retired my Akai S950 & S1000 years ago...... useful editing interface & it records too ! and for a real bargain price ....... what`s not to like ? ......... am sold on one of these, oh yes
After workarounds for the other issues the latency thing was a bit of a punch in the guts after I thought that I finally had a useful tool !
for the record I`m using Beatstep Pro to trigger it
Noiselab Project hej and works it proper with the beatstep pro? Or do you have any problems? Thx
@@evadum4149 its flawed as a piece of hardware. Apparently the 8 voice version is not.
Incredible video!
how to automatically trigger another pad when one ends playing? Is this feature available?
Hi Tag G. There is no parameter like that. Your choices are One Shot, Momentary, and Loop until restrike. Thanks for watching!
what about beat matching... if i have gears and i want to have it beat matched with it... will it adjust the beets of my sample? and the quality it comes out... as well, is it pro?
Hi Adityo. I pretty much showed all the featured it has. You'll want to look at devices that are priced three to four times higher than this one. Thanks for watching!
Sweetwater thanks
ok than so you think I could get perhaps an Akai but like the MPC Live or something?
How quick can sample get loaded bro, can you pls tell us pls
It take a while I hear -
Large samples take a long time to load.
Sample chop???
Hi SixtheSense. You can trim the Start and End points of each Sample, but if you're asking about real-time chop effects you'll need a more complex sample player. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
@@sweetwater Thanks Daniel.
How do you sample using the internal mic ? in mine it doesnt seem to work or i am making a mistake with the sample source.
can the pad be controlled via the MIDI command?
Hi pamuji. Each of the 16 pads sends and receives a specific MIDI Note #. Thanks for watching!
@@sweetwater can it be controlled directly from the keyboard arranger? example korg pa600
Can I unassign some samples from one of my custom kits so it loads faster...? Sometimes it takes about a minute to load my samples which is too long...
Hi Bob. Just put a built-in sample on that pad and there's no additional load time for that pad. Thanks for watching!
@@sweetwater This way the pad will still be orange and this is confusing! I also found out that if I load "mono" samples the loading time is way smaller.
@@BobCorey Set the the sample to an internal one, then switch to the card again and leave it on empty, that's how I cleared the pads here.
Bob Corey hey man, how long would you say it takes to load a mono kit? Just need this for live performances so needa switch between songs
can we change the tempo ??????
Hi Vihul.
>>> TYVM !
Yes, the MPX16 is really (still) stuck on only one MIDI channel.
But this is not a big constraint. You can set 48 different Note values for the 3 x 16 = 48 pad.
..and if you want to drive three MPX16s from one MIDI Out, you will also need a MIDI Thru Box because the MPX16 does not have a MIDI Soft Thru function.
Thanks for watching!
its a shame you can't record those sequences, performances into the system with some sort of song mode along with overdubbing.
kcat80 you can’t?
Does this have multiple banks or will I need to reload every single time I need to change something? My main use for this right now is only pre recorded voice lines. Any suggestions?
Hi Kyle. Each change to a new set of pad samples requires some reload time. If they're all fairly short samples, it will load quickly. If they're all very long stereo samples, it could take a minute or more to change banks. Thanks for watching.
Can you play back samples for example a loop and at the same time sample in?
Hi Raul. When it's in the Record Sample Mode it only records audio from the mono or stereo Rec In jack. Thanks for watching!
SweetwaterSound allow me to clarify the question, can I playback a sample on a pad and record in an external source simultaneously.
hi Daniel, do you experience a latency problem when assign a sample to the trigger pad from SD card? I have seen at least 0.5 sec delay when I hit the trigger pad. This is crazy. That's means I can't play live performance with band.
Hi Truc. Are you certain that the sample starts *exactly* at 0? Or is there a quiet space in front of the sample? It may be hard to tell if you created it on the MPX16, but you can always look at the sample and edit it on a computer to get the start very tight.
@@sweetwater thanks for help. I found that there was a 0.5 sec silent at begining ò the sample. I used Audacity to trimmed it. It works... no more latency.
can you load akai sounds into it?
Hi Billy, the MPX16 can play back 16-bit, mono or stereo WAV samples. They can have a sample rate of 48, 44.1, 32, 22.05, or 11.205 kHz. So... if you can get your Akai samples into the above format, you should be able to load them. But you certainly would have to make all other parameter settings by hand after a sample was loaded. Thanks for watching!
great video. looking at getting one of these
Can you get them anymore. I have one used only a couple of times because I have no time.
I took the "USB out" and plugged it into the "USB power in" and now its portable!
The MIDI handling of the Akai MPX16 depends on the firmware version.
fw v1.0.7 (not available for download from Akai website):
receive on all MIDI channels (=Omni), send on MIDI channel 10.
fw v1.0.18 (2015?, no longer available for download from the Akai website):
Only receives on MIDI channel 1, send on MIDI channel 10. Probably cannot handle MIDI messages received with Running Status.
"The MPX16 will now receive on MIDI channel 1, and send on MIDI channel 10. It now reboots/resets on a regular basis when used in a MIDI setup."(Brian Lewis)
"With MIDI Running Status off, so far I can send the MPX16 a huge amount of MIDI information without the reboot problem."(Joseph Place)
fw v1.0.19 (made on 25 August 2015, released on 17 May 2016, downloadable from the Akai website):
Received on DIN MIDI In (channel 1 only): handles MIDI messages sent with Running Status.
It's not great for pro track making but for livestreaming live events it's a gr4eat little cheap box
Can the MPX16 also be used software wise in DAWs?
Hi lewchootrain, the MPX16 can send/receive MIDI via the USB port and, in that way, could be used with various software applications. But it does not send/receive audio via the USB port. Thanks for watching!
can you change "kits" in Real Time? suppose i have 16 assigned PADS, is there a switch to change to the other 16 PADS with different sammples? or are they gonna have to "load" again from the SD card, taking loads of time..?
Hi Johnny, You are correct. To get 16 different pad samples, you'd have to load a new file from the SD card. Thanks for watching!
thanks guys, btw, other users make this machine look awful, you guys do it proper justice, not hiding the shortcomings...
Hey some of the sounds/effects/ samples do they come with the unit or you downloaded them. If you downloaded them what’s the link?
Hi Sameer, I pulled the sounds from other libraries we've made at Sweetwater. But they are not included with the MPX16. Since it reads standard .WAV files, there are literally multiple millions of sounds out there to use. Thanks for watching!
AKAI MPX16: Can I use a midi keyboard and if so, can I play more than 16 keys at once?
Cheers,
Vincent
Hi Vincent. The MPX16 can send and receive 16 MIDI Notes that correspond to the 16 Pads. Thanks for watching!
it's something like the akai s20
5:02 R.I.P ducks
ayo, what that mpx hittin' foe? (price)
200 euro's, so prob 200 usd or something
can you play samples chromatically with this and an external midi keyboard?
Hi ru. Each pad is assigned to a MIDI Note #. So you can play each pad via a keyboard, but you can't play a pad's sound chromatically across the keyboard. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
You said "jingle", how many minutes it could take?
Hi Gillette, I have two different MPX16 manuals. One says you can have 48MB total on all 16 pads. Another says 60MB. Assuming 10MB per minute for 44.1kHz, 16-bit, stereo recordings, you should be able to get a total of 4.8 minutes or 6 minutes. You can double that if you use Mono, and even more if you use a lower sampling rate. Thanks for watching!
hi im thinking of using this for breakbeat loops and vocals for a hardware setup, does it sync to external clock and even speed up/slowdown with tempo changes? thanks
Hi APR. MIDI is used to trigger each pad, but there are no other forms of synchronization. -_Daniel_
Creepy mannequin in the background!
That's my mom.
ha ha , very chill
I'll buy it if it has creepy mannequin sounds in the background
Nothing creepy my friend... that's just his night-shift makeover. But did you see the cat?
It draws only .5 amps, so connect a 10mAh power pack for ~ 5hrs of portability usage ! DANG ! Connect dual 1/4" to 1/8" stereo and record your work onto your cell phone, DANG DANG !
Why don't Akai just make a real sampler??
INFURIATING..... I wanted this to be such a good machine but it keeps crashing and flashing format problems with sd card....... It doesn't save anything to pads every time you switch off you have to start loading samples to pads all over again....... Refuses to delete samples it's just freezes.... HORRIBLE!!!!
It's the kind of hardware that makes me want a daw 😖😖😖
Damn, although I am sorry for you, you're comment as well as many others has made me decide NOT to get this!
very long talkative ...
Roland SP-404SX.......
Can I convert a MP3 keroake track to wav and play on this device?
