Thanks for the clearify ! It's really important to know the difference, especially in Germany. Here are only two handed knives allowed, without a "solid standing" blade. In general, no flipper, thump point, holes, etc. nothing only this nailcurve.
I opted for the Urban. Thicker blade stock, better blade steel, and a full backspring rather than half like on the UKPK. Also have a Wasp in S90V with an added thumbstud but the Urban is quicker and easier to open.
sorry for the late reply (2 year old thread) but do you think the ArtisanCutlery Small Archaeo Detent Lock Flipper (2nd last one) would be UKPC complaint? It seems to tick the boxes overall and looks the part.
Man, the Lionsteel Thrill and Best Man have got to be my favorite Slip Joints. Them dudes in Italy really know how to make a knife. Thanks David and Knide Center, such an awesome video.
I love that lion steel disappearing pocket clip! Sometimes I just drop the knife in my pocket without clipping it if I’m not wearing my fifth pocket jeans
I only buy Slipjoints cause of the laws where i live. One-Hand Knifes only legal to carry if it doesn't lock. Thanks for the Video, helped me to decide!
I own the Spyderco UK penknife and the CTS-BD1N steel is my favorite because it seems to hold a edge close to S30V but strops up easily to a razor edge. Thiis is my most carried and used knife.
Thank you Mr. Andersen and Knife Center stuff. People used friction folders for centuries in every day real tasks. A slip joint, if used with respect, can serve well. I like the ZT and the Lionsteel, very nice the stop pin on the Artisan Cutlery knife. If You are interested, take a look on the Pattada, friction folder made in the Sardegna island, Italy. In the past people of this island used this knife for self defense without any lock, or guard!.
You mentioned that the finger choil gives you added safety and that you "would feel very confident putting it into true heavy work". Personally I don't agree with this. I'm in the UK and can't carry locking knives, so I started out buying slip joints and made sure to get ones with finger choils as intuitively they seemed safer. But really they do almost nothing to keep the blade closed. There's very little leverage due to how close the finger choil is to the rotation point. Paradoxically, I actually feel safer and more "locked in" with friction folders like the Svord Peasant Mini, rather than slip joint knives. The reason being that friction folders like this have an extended tang that you can hold on with your entire hand, and this gives much greater leverage on the blade than a finger choil does. Holding the Svord Peasant Mini in my hand with pressure on the tang, it feels like a locking blade - I could possibly even baton with it! But a regular slip joint with a finger choil, no matter how hard I press on the choil, it doesn't take much force to close the blade down on my hand (and pinch that finger in the process)...
I have a Boker Jens Anso Cox Slim in N690BO w/Micarta scales, a gift from my favorite cousin in Germany - very stiff walk-n-talk on that one! But the knife that has had the most use out of anything I own is a Spyderco Kiwi 3 - the tiny all-stainless one. I can get away with carrying it into the most uptight locations (such as through metal detectors at the gov't office where I did IT work) and it's all you need for 95% of your day if you aren't being outdoorsy, or doing manual labor. Sure wish Spyderco would bring out an updated version as my blade is getting a bit thin! I had to laugh as I saw a NIB one being listed at $129... Out of what was shown I like the Boker Kansei Matsuno Wasabi, the Artisan Archeo, and the LionSteel Thrill.
Half of my knives are slip joints. I EDC every one of them, including a Scout Knife made in the 50’s. I’ve never once cut myself on any of them. Even without a half-stop, all of my slip joints have been plenty safe and secure. I think- though I could be wrong- that slip joints get a reputation for being unsafe largely because they are everyone’s first knife as a kid. Watch a kid do literally anything. They are utterly spastic, no matter how simple the task is. You and I were just as spastic when we were kids. Now that we’re adults, we have the mental and bodily coordination necessary to operate a slip joint successfully. I have even used the back end of my blade as a mild wedge/pry bar of sorts without any issues. I was doing janitorial work for my church, and any time I replaced toilet paper I’d have to pry the wetted-together end of the rolls loose because it was done very unprofessionally and could be a pain to get the roll started. Even if I put quite a bit of pressure on the back of the blade (I used the spine in order to avoid slicing up the TP) I never came close to cutting myself.
Think about making slipjoints, trying to gauge interest in my design. Multiple different blade styles and Handle materials with coffin shaped handles on the larger side?
manly wasp is a great slipjoint folder, comes in s90v for great price and sub 3inches. g10 scales and deep carry. I put a thumb stud on mine for one hand opening but it is a bit awkward with the quarterstops
Same here, I have the S90V version and put a thumb stud, agree it's slow opening though so I prefer to carry my Spyderco Urban at work when I need to open packaging etc quickly. But I'd rate the Wasp over the Bokerplus XS, even the 14C28N version if you want something at a comparable price. Also it's made in Europe (just!) which is better than made in China. And all 3 blade steel choices - 12C27, 14C28N and S90V - are better than the Bokerplus's 440C.
I have a bunch of non-locking knives that I really like- Lionsteel thrill and dom, proper, kizer pinch, but the real steel Luna is my current favorite.
For the last week my favorite has been the Civivi Fracture. Great blade profile and feels real nice in the hand. Just to bad it wasn't offered with better steel and micarta scales.
Really nice video on knives that I think should have a place in anyone's collection. I recently bought a Viper DAN2 that is absolutely terrific. Not likely for everyone though.
Probably the ONLY knife review channel where someone does NOT have to open and close the the folders at least 10 times a minute! Not that I need another knife but the Artisan is way too cool to walk bye, so I am heading over to the website to see if shiping over seas is an option! It should be .. * Edit: No orders under $ 200 can be shiped due to some EU laws .. So there you go .. No business been made today mate!
Failing to include the Bestech Junzi seems a shocking oversight. The Junzi is surely one of the best modern oho slipjoints in production. Cheaper than the Hinderer and the Liong Mah, more fancy than the Boker XS and UKPK, stronger spring and better grind than the Zipslip; safer than the ZT. The spartan is ridiculous and the Terminus has terrible ergos up by the index finger. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work. Kind regards from the land of the slipping edc - the UK😒😎
I really like to thumb tang (straight razor tang) slipjoints. Why didn't KC get any of the Civivi Fractures? Unfortunately, I had to buy two of them somewhere else.
Both of my boys have non locking knifes. 8 years old and 10. Nobody has folded the blade back on their fingers We hunt every day. ( birds/rabbits) . Capability of the operator.
Well they are only 8 and 10, you live long enough and it will happen, though to be honest the worst self inflicted knife injuries I have had do not come from a non locker, I had a very nasty accident with an opinel not long ago, nearly severed a tendon, so you can never be too careful.
I have got the Spydie UKPK with custom Micarta scales but switched to the Kizer titanium Zipslip. Reson was because the ziptie mod (cheap emmerson wave diy) broke the first set of scales on my Spyderco after like the 10th time pulling it out my pocket. As the Kizer is all Titanium, this cant happen again. The reason I have to go for a slipjoint is, that in Germany any folding knife is not allowed when it locks and can be opened one handed (applies to pretty much any folder). Thus you need a non locking blade if you want to go with a folder. Well.... until i saw this video I was sure the Kizer will be my edc for the next 10 years at least.... but this archeo is a must have :P
Hi David C. And anyone who could answer this question, which is off topic Zach but can you swap scales on a lightweight knife say to put G-10 on the knife ?
I am suprised you didn't include the viper dan 1 and 2 in this list. They are absolutely fantastic gentlemans folders and are between a friction and slipjoint. In fact features of some of the others where pioneered by viper for the dan series.
You dare to say the latest SAK is not the latest and the greatest, I demand satisfaction sir. I own a variety of knives, some legal EDC and some not, but of them all the most acceptable, useful and least threatening in this unfortunate age is an SAK, some of those other non lockers may be technically UK friendly but the rozzers are likely to look at them as more threatening.
I have carried slipjoints for over 40 years and not once has one closed on me. Why? Because I would use a fixed blade for tasks that I would not want to use a slipjoint for.
I get the whole slip joint thing ..i do. And that ZT is beautiful.....but there needs to be a balance. I'm not giving $200 for a blade with a nail nick. Go backwards on build...do the same on price manufacturers.
You just need to shape the pivot area of the knife blade, to match the area of the spring that is touching the blade pivot area. If they match, then you can move the blade without disrupting the spring. They add the little notch at the very tip of the spring to indent in, and hold the blade in place. That’s how Kizer and Mikey v were able to cheat out the parent on this “new innovation”, as you obviously and clearly pointed it out before that spyderco did do it years prior. Misleading patent
@@tidge879 I have both the Tern and Urban. The UKPK only has a half backspring for whatever reason and apparently the detente on it is weak. The Urban has a stronger backspring (and better blade steel) than the Tern but I rate both of them highly, and they're both better than the UKPK.

Preach it David! Double detent is not slipjoint! Super different mechanisms and feels
Thanks for doing this for us UK people who can only have non-locking knives :)
You totally sold me on that Archaeo a few months ago. First knife that I've bought from Knifecenter. I added thumbstuds to it. So fidgety.
Got mine yesterday when they came in, (13AUG2020).
Which thumbstud did you add, and how ?
I love that lion steel disappearing pocket clip! Sometimes I just drop the knife in my pocket without clipping it if I’m not wearing my fifth pocket jeans
Usual high quality video, great work guys. That Lionsteel is gorgeous.
This man could sell me AIR

Nice video! Slipjoints with a half stop typically have the backspring flush at that half stop position. Nothing particularly fancy about it :)

Yesterday, microtech ludt's spring was broken.
