I absolutely love Logic Pro so far. I've been stuck in AUM and Drambo for so long because I don't like any of the DAWs we've had available. Logic is fast enough to work in that I can actually get some stuff going right away. Love the flexible UI. Step sequencer is really cool. The drum rack thing is super flexible. Good stuff!

I started using iOS music production as my main platform in my home studio in 2015. Jakob was with the Sound Test Room when it was a collective. When I saw links for the Haq Attaq videos I was a subscriber & big fan right away.
I say this because since the iPad version of Logic Pro was announced the hype train left the station quickly. The AudioBus forum, still the de facto forum for iOS music producers, was palpably excited that Apple really did what so many had hoped for: bring Logic to the iPad.
What I appreciate about Jakob and his videos on Logic so far is the steady & cautious tone they have. Instead of proclaiming iPadOS's Logic Pro as the only DAW we need now (as some have), Jakob has treated Logic as it should be: it's another tool to aid in iOS music production not the second coming.
I like Logic Pro on iPad a lot, but I will still use Cubasis and the other apps (sadly Auria Pro seems like abandonware at this point) that I've always used. Because Logic is still in its infancy a measured & realistic approach is the way to go in my view. Thank You Jakob for keeping your feet on the ground and producing such an insightful episode. Cheers.

I have reallly enjoyed my time with LP on my ipad and have been writing on it for a couple of years now.
I have decided that its not going to become another of my many subscriptions though. The truth is, i now only do music as a hobby these days and have a full time job, which means that i might not even write for a couple of weeks. It totally has a place for those making a living out of it though.
If the big name companies such as NI ever get on board, i may revisit but will be sticking with GB for now as it covers 90 percent of my needs.
Although i love Chromaverb and many of the other stock plugins. The truth is that i have many third party plugs that cover all the basis many times over and that are extremely high quality.
Will be interested to see how it develops and this was a great overview. 👍

How are you liking your Mavis? You inspired me to get one, I’ve only had it a few days but I love it. I have a roland SE-02 but the filter is not the same and I wasn’t ready for that. I dont know the right word to d3scribe it but i guess it sounds dirty but still buttery smooth at the same time. I cant wait to connect the the mavis to the se-02 together to give that wavefolder some more waves (filtered even, yay) to feed to the wavefolder. am i crazy for thinking that if you crank the volume on the mavis it gives it some overdrive? its seems to add a little dirt to it is what im hearing. I ❤ this synth and cant wait until I can drop it in a 120ish hp case and find some good analog modules for it to make a family with. lol. Also picked up the roland s-1 too at the same time and I love it just as much, they’re getting really good at making digital synths. I wish I had the scratch for a TE mixer like yours but I’m tapped out I need to pay down this stuff first, I’m still paying off my model 12 I really wish I would have waited though, I have 5 compact/boutique synths including the volca drum, and a friend told me he’s sending over his volca bass…. so it would be so nice to have that mixer. I want to watch videos about it again if I remember right it has many advanced capabilities. anyway thanks and take care

All this is good. But. Why is the built-in Animoog Z keyboard useless for full MPE recording even with the release of Logic Pro? You have to use Wood Troller to record sound with a slide. And by the way, the Logic keyboard also works intermittently when Pitch changes. Wood Troller works well with MPE, but I would like to be able to make do with the internal resources of the same Animoog.

Regarding your comment about MIDI mapping the transport controls. Logic for iPad (and iMac) has many keyboard shortcuts. If you have an Apple Magic ( or other keyboard) connected to your iMac you can use:
    Spacebar to start/stop playback
    R to record
E to open the piano roll editor
    X to toggle the Mixer
A complete explanation of all keyboard shortcuts starts on page 350 of the Logic for iPad manual…

  • @TristanHurd

If you have the same third party plugin for both Mac and iOS will it load the plugins on both platforms? And if you have a plugin for only one platform will it convert "bake in" the effects added so you get a sonic replication on the other platform, or does that have to be done manually? Hope that makes sense...

    • @anacrusisinthailand
      @anacrusisinthailand Рік тому

From my quick play with Logic for iPad, yes if you have both plugins for each platform they load no problem. If you only have a plugins for 1 platform, you need to bounce the track to audio first “bake in” the effects…

Does Logic record AU plug in knob changes if they’re done on-screen (without separate midi controllers)?
I had the problem in cubasis and other DAWs that they don’t record AUv3 controls like filter, reverb etc. it works with the cubase synths but not with third party ones like animoog or Pure Acid.
Cause I’d looove to record controls/knobs in plugins without additional hardware or midi mapping

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Рік тому +1

Yes Logic Pro records knob movements. However I’m confused by your comment because so does Cubasis. You just have to activate the Read / Write commands. It’s two buttons in the upper right corner of the plugin view. Write for recording parameters and Read for playing that data back. I made a video about AUv3 automation back when they introduced it: ua-cam.com/video/swfH8WXxfVs/v-deo.html

    • @raysubject

Guys the issue isn't prices being too low - it's adoption of the ipad as a legitimate music production tool. Jakob Haq is a name brand in this niche but he has less than 50k subscribers. The fact that he continues to make great content is amazing in itself but I'm sure that the dedication is a combination of passion and belief in the idea that music production on ipad will take off. When a developer can launch a steam game for $15 bucks and support if for 7 years while doing 50% off sales, it's a matter of numbers. If you are using Jakob's subscriber count as a projection for revenue on an app/plugin that you are creating then with Apple store taking 30%, you still have half a million dollars in revenue. That's quite good for a solo developer but not good for a team.
Maybe Logic Pro coming to the iPad will be the catalyst that increases that adoption rate and the upper limit goes from $500k at $15 a license to $5 million and everyone and their mother will be dropping plugins in the store.
With that being said, increasing prices will only deter people from buying plugins on the app store and adopting the iPad - period. Apple needs to push Logic Pro on iPad hard and EVERYONE will prosper.
As a sidenote, if apple releases a touchscreen PC to compete with the Microsoft Surface, that will be the final nail in the coffin for iPad music production. Food for thought.

Just a tiny note. I’m still making videos for the same reasons I started making videos. To share my knowledge about music making with tools I love making music with. Secondly, I really enjoy making videos, so you’re spot on when it comes to passion. However, I’ve actually never ever thought to myself “I better keep making videos so that iPad music making can take off”. 😅 It is definitely not part of the equation for me.

Yeah. The price of the subscription is good. So, if I was a music producer and I was sure to use this program every month, or even just most of the time in the coming years, then this subscription would make a lot of sense.
But I am not a music producer. I am a hobbyist. There are times when I would use this program, and at other times I won’t.
Now, I could of course cancel my subscription when I don’t use the program, and simply subscribe again when I do. But there lies the problem: I don’t know when I will use the program and when I won’t. I would use it when I have the time and “feel like it”. It’s a hobby. It is not something that I plan out. And I don’t think that I can change my mind daily on whether I am subscribed or not.
Also, I would only remember to unsubscribe when I actually think about this program. And that typically only happens when I think about making music … so, when I actually think about using it again. So, I would constantly miss the opportunity to unsubscribe.
Of course I could just stay subscribed. It’s only $5 per month, not much, right? But then again, I already do that with Amazon Prime Video. And how often do I use it? 2 months per year, at most, to watch Mrs. Maisel. So I already have a service that by itself doesn’t cost the world, but that I rarely use and yet pay for every month. And it adds up. Staying subscribed to Logic Pro would add a second service. Adding a Final Cut Pro X subscription would add a third service. (I sometimes edit holiday videos.) And when others make their software subscription-only, that would add more small monthly payments.
If I paid a small subscription for, say, a quarter of the software on my iPad, then I would easily pay somewhere between 150 to 300 dollars per month, every month. There are only about 10 programs that I really use every day. I use most of the programs only occasionally, and then sometimes a whole bunch of them (music software) intensively for a few weeks.
So, I would need some program that handles all these subscriptions and automatically unsubscribes me every month … and automatically subscribes me again when I actually start using one of these programs.
Which brings me to a pay-per-use model. If I could just pay a few cents for every hour that I use Logic Pro, that would actually be far more convenient for me. Yet, what I don’t like about this is that it requires surveillance. Something on my iPad needs to measure “how much” I use the program. And does it count if I just leave the program open but don’t do anything? Suddenly, I am on a timer. Paid time. Studio rental. And that also doesn’t gel well with all this being a hobby: quality leisure time, essentially, without time pressures or surveillance.
And that is why I strongly prefer to buy software. The current version, including bug fixes, security fixes and compatibility fixes for the next few versions of iPadOS. And a discounted option to upgrade to the next version. Or even to extend support. Because then I can calculate the cost upfront, against the money that I have available. And when I believe I need the upgrade, then I will buy it. (And I do: for example, I have bought all Fabfilter version upgrades, sometimes even before they added an upgrade option to the App Store. They are just so compelling and good. Same for Cubasis. For a number of other software upgrades I have done the same, and would do it again: Klevgrand, Eventide, Bram Bos, Virsynth, Kymatica (AUM), … just to name a few, there are more.)
That is another reason why I don’t like subscriptions: the incentive for developers to actually improve something in the next version is not so high. Developers do not actually get paid for improvements any more, there is simply no difference in revenue for them, so no monetary incentive. If they just continue to support the same set of features indefinitely with bug fixes, they are paid exactly the same. And if this is a company and not just an individual, then the CEO will see it this way. Of course, there is still the incentive for them to keep existing customers, and to attract new ones. But if a customer can only load existing projects while they are subscribed to the software, then there is a strong incentive on the customer side to stay subscribed … just to load older projects again. And new customers can for quite a while be convinced with ads.
This model of course doesn’t work so well when there is actual competition: some plugins compete in the same space and one could substitute another. Although they all have their own character, so I still would not want to miss them. DAWs on the other hand often cancel out competition, because exchanging projects between them is often a hassle, if not impossible (when they use certain internal plugins or special features of the DAW).
Supporting a subscription-only model for software that inherently doesn’t need to be a subscription will only make this model more attractive for developers, despite its shortcomings for customers and future improvements. And hobbyists will not be convinced or drop out at some point, so this eventually aims at professional use only. And that will make subscriptions more expensive (because of a much lower number of subscribers), and the programs will become even more exclusive. And that is yet another reason why I don’t like to support this model: I don’t think low subscription prices are sustainable (and btw, low sales prices aren’t either, and they are going up somewhat already), and it excludes certain usage patterns and a large group of potential users.

Man I am trying to like Logic but they have made it soooo hard. No midi export? no ghost notes in the piano roll, some of the included sounds are just terrible. haha when I played my wife the "studio strings" here reply was...those are supposed to be strings? Right now I just don't see me using it past the trial. And besides Cubasis gives me access to way more plugins haha.

Your audience has been doing iOS music production for years, but Logic for iPad really targets GarageBand users looking for more in a pro app, and Logic Mac users trying out iPads. Apple hopes Logic and FCP for iPad will drive iPad hardware sales. So, it might be the best DAW but your audience doesn’t necessarily use a DAW. 😏
