It's always pitiful when historically greedy corporations pretend like they have the players' best interest in mind when implementing a blatantly shady business scheme.

"Secondary market?" Apples to oranges. This dude has to be on drugs for him to think that the general public is stupid enough to accept that, and it's especially rich coming from Ubisoft who, as Yongyea has already stated many times before, is nowhere near the best role model for ANY devs to look up to. And, Yong, I love the fact that you brought up the fact that blockchain tech is power-intensive and a waste of energy. Somebody literally outright objected to that in the comment section of ClownfishTV's recent NFT related video, even though universities have PROVEN FOR A FACT that blockchain tech uses as much energy as the ENTIRE COUNTRY of Argentina. Thank you, Yongyea. Thank you for being one of the few voices of sanity in this maddening world that already has enough power and influence to slap this shot down. Thank you for calling out these pathetic, money-hungry companies for their bullshit.

There's no reason for them to even make that argument. The argument is even more objective than fiat money: We designate monetary value on items and goods we deem to have objective and/or cultural value. NFTs use blockchain technology, which means hardware power was used to establish solid encryption and hence a portion of value comes from that power utilized along with confirming each block, alongside the integral and meaningful value of the piece of artwork or item itself. The counterargument is typically "but it's digital, so you're just owning a copy/paste for something millions have with a nifty logo attached to it," however this argument falls short in the first area vis a vis blockchain as well as the fact that people own Da Vinci paintings from which millions of copies, digital and otherwise, are circulated worldwide - and yet people still want the original. That claim of originality is recursively substantiated by the blockchain and claim of ownership. I would add that it's not as if all NFT's have value - like most other art and creative goods, they follow the Pareto distribution pretty well. So long as a company can err towards the exponential end of that distribution somehow, it's a reasonable method of fund sourcing.

Even if you own the NFT receipt, the data you're viewing is a copy of whatever the address links to unless you can connect directly to the device storing that data.

CrushCrush is a freemium game (free + microtransactions). $2 for 20 diamonds in the game sounds pretty bad but you can get a free diamond in-game practically every day if you turn on the 1 hour timer and extra free diamonds from progressing through the game. Diamonds can be used to buy a limited time boost but you can just reset the game a bunch to get a free permanent boost based on progression. You can used diamonds to buy a few extra items for the girls you like but that's not really important. You can auto-finish an event with just 1 diamond. The limited time events seem to cycle over and over based on the time spent in game. The game keeps track of your time even when you're not playing, so just have a snack or watch a movie. Go to work or whatever. Come back to the game and find that your stats have gone up like 8 levels or something. IDK. It seems pretty reasonable compared to this nonsense that Ubisoft is pulling.

I am so tired of hearing NFTBros and executive who try to sell this fever dream on how NFT tech will make it possible to bring game assets from 1 game to another.
This is just the most blatant lie out there.
Sure it is possible for let's say to have a character/item etc from 1 game show up in completely different franchise. But it isn't a one click solution.
You have different art styles in game so if you are a game developer and I'd say a lot of users you care about art style consistency.
Imagine you could just export Link from wind waker and import him into the next Call of Duty game. The art styles are completely different. it would be jarring to look at the two together.
Items/Weapons/Characters are all created different for each game. There is different underlying code. Different rigs, different texture systems, different ways shaders are being built and a different game engine.
It is not possible to have an automated system that just does the whole conversion for you. This would need to be done manually by artists and coders followed by a QA check.
And why would a third party developer care if Ubisoft game assets work in their game? Just because someone bought an NFT on a different platform and made Ubisoft money which the third party developer doesn't see a single cent from? Definitely not.
This would add extra dev time that costs the third party studio A LOT of money.
Additionally this would need to be extrapolated further to EVERY possible game NFT offered by all kinds of studios and updated constantly whenever a new NFT comes out.
I don't even wanna think about the whole copyright and trademark issue this would bring.
How would a random third party developer even get the original model files and attached code that is needed files to implement those.
NFT / blockchain tech doesn't make this whole process suddenly automatic and fixes all the issue.
This whole promise has so many logistic problems that I can only imagine that people who've never worked on games came up with that marketing scam.
As correctly stated you of course can have game/items crossovers without NFTs that are done and implement manually by artists/coders after tons of negotiation and contract agreements.
Additionally the whole lie about owning anything. NFTs don't make you own a thing. You own a spot on the blockchain. not the data referenced by it. (UNLESS CONTRACTUALLY AGREED AND SIGNED ON). Once the game servers go down you don't own shit. And no you are not legally allowed to rip the game files open and extract the skin and model and sell it to someone else.
This whole NFT bullshit is so disingenuous that it makes me mad every time I have to think about it.
This is a system that targets people who have no idea what they engage with and will get taken advantage off by the people in charge.
Especially entering a whole speculative market where kids have access to. If NFTs get implemented into games those games should immediately be adult only. It would be completely unethical to have kids engage with the system.
But this won't happen. heck politicians barely understand loot boxes. Having to explain blockchain and NFTs to them will take another decade or two. Starting with condescension is the fastest way to lose my ability to be persuaded or consider one's side and that was what Ubisoft did.
I'm all for someone sticking to their guns, but don't tell your audience they just don't get it. This is a horrible way to address consumers. It is a great opportunity to open conversation about NFT's but they were entirely dismissive and shut down feedback.
Companies need to learn they aren't a charity. They have to provide a product people want. They aren't entitled to people's money or interest. It is one aspect of capitalism that they conveniently sweep under the rug.

I am able to unlock certain rewards in the game (like weapon skins and outfits), as long as I own Rainbow Six Siege (which I don't, so I can't unlock it in The Division 2). 12:50 - To be eligible you must buy the game and play at least 2 hours. That to me is a major warning. If you purchase your Ubisoft games on Steam then you're entitled to a refund no questions asked as long as your refund request is made within 14 days of purchase AND you haven't played more than 2 hours of the game. To me, this is Ubisoft's way to try and lock players into the NFT/microtransaction market with no risk of having to give money back to players through refunds. Sounds to me they'll make the games intentionally great for the first 2 hours without any hint of needing to use any form of microtransaction to progress, but as soon as that 2 hour mark is up and you're no longer eligible for that automatic Steam refund, boom, in comes the pay walls, down goes your progression and experience of the game.
Ubisoft are trying to subvert Steam's refund policy. But yeah don't worry guys, Ubisoft said it themselves, the community loves them and Ubisoft is only looking out for the players.

I saw Folding Ideas' video on NFT's and despite him giving a lot of background and the heckuva journalistic piece the video is, I still do not fully grasp what an NFT is. For what I could understand on the topic, it all just sounds like a speculative market and artificial scarcity. Not one person, not even the people who think this tech could be good and agree the implementation is missplaced; has been able to explain how it works.
Only those that are so sure of themselves as to think they have everything figured out are fools and they still have the audacity to call those who accept our lack of understanding the dumb ones.

You'd think with the way their 'digits' venture went, they'd recognize that gamers aren't as stupid as this guy believes. Ubisoft is completely out of touch with the gaming community at large, as well as just plain greedy.

So... wait. Ubisoft is saying that gamers, who often know more about IT than the average executives or investors in general, and are experts of exploiting and abusing systems, are too stupid to understand NFTs?
Also, did they just call basically all of their costumers stupid? It would be a shame if people would just stop buying their stuff because of this.

Here is the thing about interviews: Interviewers are always willing to ask the questions, of course, but they are rarely willing to challenge the answers. Challenging the answers that Ubisoft gave here would have been very enlightening, and it is sad that we had to settle for what we got. I do not support NFT, and I would have liked for Ubisoft to have gotten called out on their bullshit in this interview.

Their stock holders want it and will risk bleeding these companies dry to make this a thing.
This is the problem with "large successful companies become unsuccessful when they fail to increase market share and profits year over year" as opposed to just doing things really well and reaching a peak and holding it.

I like how the whole point of their interview was for Ubisoft to attempt to convince gamers that NFT's are a good thing for games. But yet this interview just made things worse between them and gamers, and shows how out of touch they are with the gaming community. I don't like the idea of NFT's and how hard corps and crypto bro's are pushing for them to be a thing. I agree with Yong, and that the only thing I do like about the potential use for NFT's is to make the games we buy transferable after purchase. Would be nice to see gamers trading games amongst each other again, like how we used to do back before digital copies were a thing.

I could never see this happening, I remember when they used to have online codes to multiplayer in hopes that it would prevent used games from being sold as the code would be one time, and make the new owner pay again for the multiplayer options.

The worst part is no matter how much we all detest NFTs in gaming there's going to be some small wealthy minority of us that are going to make this ridiculous idea work for these companies, just like microtransactions. Don't even buy these games.

yea, will happen..i saw some news that supposedly ubisoft has already sold 15 nfts for 1800 dollars. its a pathetic sum itself but considering if only 15 pieces netted them that its more profitable than selling actual games. it will be a fine side cashflow for them even if 99% of gamers never get involved.

You could argue that NFTs could be the framework for you to actually own digital goods like skins/etc which are already a huge part of gaming- it's just the way they're going about it now is VERY confusing and trust me it's on purpose, because if you understood exactly what they wanted to do you can fight against it better.

If you HAVE to OWN a digital skin, you should get help immediately. NFT's are just developing mental problems over ownership, and everybody buying into it is contributing.

And what worth do these skins have after the game shuts down?
      Exactly 0.
You already own the skins ones you unlock them anyway or pretty much onwards from the point were their code is stored on your device.
Well "own". You cant really own digital goods considering as soon as the power goes out there is no way to access them.

@@ScaryScarab21 Totally. I worked AAA for quite a while, and I know how these money guys think. I started my own studio a few years ago after seeing the writing on the wall. Since I've had several people reach out to try and introduce NFT into my game. I heard the first pitch, and there's no problem that NFT needs to be solving in gaming. Everyone that contacted me didn't even play games. I just want the game industry to go back to games being games. Put that dev time into actually building a good game. Man I watched a dedicated team build a f'n gumball machine for microtransactions for months. I'm so sick of it and want to take games back.
