  • My John Deere 2025R has power but does not start. Is it the battery, the ignition, the key or the starter?

It’s surprising that John Deere does not offer a very expensive John Deere upgrade switch. For the price of these tractors it’d be nice to have a security key.

Good video Dave and good to see you up and about again. I was worried maybe you'd had too much of the Christmas cheer and fallen off your perch. Take care bro.

Hi there Mike. I managed to get back on the digger for a small job about 10 days after the operation. Got busted by the wife so she has now taken all my keys off me until weelk 6! Cheers Dave.

I've been using the one single key on my key ring to start all my john deere equipment for about the last ten years, they are all the same. This is not an unusual situation for equipment. I used to store a bunch of Caterpillar gear here for a civil works company, diggers, dozer, roller etc, single one "Cat-key" on my keyring for whenever I had to move any of them too.

Now I can understand why so much equipment goes missing from work sites. I have noticed some of the name machines have the power cut off inside the engine bay behind a locked door (but not sure if it is the same key). I have a GPS tracker on my cars so I guess that would also work with heavy equipment.

If your tractor wont Crank thats some type of electrical issie...If it Cranks thats a starting issue..yoir key issue os not a j.d. issue..nearly every farm and heavy eqipmnt is the same..the key fits the model.
    .simple as that

Hi Dave. Ive had many John Deere ride on mowers over the years. My number one complaint has been about the seats. They all seem to crack after a year or two. How is your seat?

My seats are all OK because I always buy the John Deere seat covers. Although when I bought the 2025R tractor they did not sell the covers in Australia and had to order it from a JD dealer in the USA. They all seem to be around $100 but without them the seats break down very fast. Cheers Dave.

Dave, I'm having trouble imagining a less secure start system. Questions - the old switch didn't seem to move much at all to start with the old key. Does that match the new one? Also - does the old key work in the new switch?

I did try the new 'red' key in the old switch but it didn't work. Will try the old key and am thinking it will probably work! The key seemed to go a lot further into the new switch so I am thinking maybe a bug built a nest or a mud bug put something in there in the old switch. I am thinking about adding a hidden kill switch somewhere on the tractor as extra security. Cheers Dave.

yes, a mud wasp nest in the switch would explain a lot. I have a little honda generator .. the mud wasps like to nest in the exhaust pipe (its pencil size on the 1kva inverter) which causes similar problems. I keep a bit of silicone hose up the pipe now when not running. If you want a spare you could maybe wash out the old switch soaking in a bucket of clean water, puff of compressed air to dry and empty the dust, then a puff of wd40. Or just put a toggle switch for ignition and a pushbutton for start into the old switch body :) Similar security and more reliability.

Would be pretty easy to steal a John Deer if you’ve got some random keys in your pocket
