    I flew a KR2 with a direct drive 1915cc VW for 15 years no worries . Cheeeep to rebuild . Mine was a different engine kit provider and very well known at 160 pounds and direct drive .

      I am building a Himax1500 that is rated for 50 horsepower and wish to convert my own engine. Do you know of a soarce of information on what is involved in the conversion?

      @@billietyree6139 I kind of hate to say on this channel but Great Planes V W if your willing to build from kits although you can get a complete unit .I am sure you could find that he can accommodate your requirements plus they are easy to talk to. You may want the Better half VW .

    Excellent video, it answered a lot of questions I had about using a VW engine in an airplane. I think these are wonderful engines for the LSA group as they are very light weight and have the perfect amount of power. The price is right too!

    It looks good. I would really like to see a cog tooth belt drive system with for and aft piller and plate support system as I have seen Hans Myers From Midland Ont make. Cost and power for this motor looks good..

    I want to see a Rotax 800R conversion.... 140hp and weighs close to a 583/

    Been thinking about that a lot. But all in all they should be detuned to 120 Hp to remain reliable. I prefer the Weber 750 Turbocharged which takes much more abuse than the Rotax 800 ...

    For me, the fact that the new lycoming 233 is modern in design, has a 2400 tbo time, only 2400-rpm for cruise, plenty of hp, years of experience in the aviation industry and the fact that most mechanics are already familiar with the engine, it would be tough not to want the lycoming 233 for me.

    Sending MORE FUEL to a "dead" cylinder is a guaranteed way to make sure to wash down that cylinder wall, rings and piston and then dilute the engine lubricating oil with all kinds of fuel that will ultimately dilute the oil to the point that the other cylinders and/or main/rod bearings end up scored/scuffed/seized/spun as well. That "VW-based" and "high-performance" engine is also missing something absolutely CRITICAL to making any air-cooled engine "live" and particularly multi-cylinder horizontally-opposed "high-performance" engines which is the COOLING FAN/DUCTING to direct cooling air "over" and "around" ALL FOUR CYLINDERS. Having a "prop" in front of an "air-cooled engine" does NOT mean that "cooling air" is getting where it HAS TO GET TO PROPERLY COOL THE ENGINE. Start jacking with and/or "deleting" the cooling fan/ducts on any air-cooled engine and you'll "burn up" even a STOCK "low-performance" engine in no time at "high speed" and/or "high load".

      After years of flying VW engines don’t have a problem with cooling… that’s why we have CHT for each cylinder. You obviously don’t know much about homebuilts

      Never knew a CHT could cool a cylinder. Could you expound on that theory.
