Here in Dallas, this guy was the SHIZZLE back in the 90s. Local boy does good. I had at least 2 of his CDs and played those things to death! His music was unlike any other, and on his CDs, there wasn't a bad tune among them. Super creative, quirky intelligent lyrics, unafraid to look at the seamy underbelly of life, or the weird stuff that people tend to overlook. He used incredibly catchy rhythms, quirky samples, and unique overdubbing to create tunes that were unlike anything else out there. Sadly, he never really exploded like everyone expected him to. Perhaps his music and lyrics were TOO intelligent for the everyday listener. Will always be a favorite of mine, and hearing any of his tunes takes me right back to my life in the early 90s. Great stuff!
I remember first hearing "the city sleeps" ironically during a rainy night from a college station. I also remember the controversy over the lyrical content. An absolute master piece still listen to it all these decades later.
he got traction with "If I only Had a Brain" and things were finally taking off around 94 but from my understanding he became disillusioned with the music industry and walked away. I heard he worked at a bookstore for a while and one guy claims he became a helicopter pilot
For some reason this song popped in my head today on a loop and i had to seek it out. I always appreciated mc 900 ft jesus for not following the “pop formula”. Love the story telling and usually no repetitious choruses. Good stuff ! The city sleeps is a great song too.
CLASSIC! Glad the YT got the video up, YT is literally the museum that contains my musical history from the late 60s to right now. I remember this being played in the "alternative" dance clubs in NJ/Philly in the late 90s, early 2000s. Thanks for the memories and putting a smile on my face in the middle of the workday! 😎
Go listen to Stare and Stare. Somewhere between ZZ, Jimmie H, and Stevie R. And still works in the term old faye. Then the song really starts. Follow that with City Sleeps. Great music, coming from a dark place. Wish you had made more. Fly on!
This was brillant work. We had old man Bush in the WH a little war in Iraq (pre-season). Simpler times. Hard to believe that was over 30 yrs now. Damn.

Genna Tuelz nah, it is is 900 foot jesus. He got the name from this: Griffin's stage name came from a sermon by Oral Roberts, in which the televangelist claimed that he had received a vision of a 900-foot-tall (270 m) Jesus, who commanded him to build a hospital (CityPlex Towers) on the campus of Oral Roberts University.[
So LA this 900 🦶V A T O. Deal with it every breath. I see his song C I T Y S L E E P turning in the theme song for this 14th & TeN FWY 🔥A R S O N🔥in Los. How do you vote. Give it to a loco local. That’s how we see it from Marran0 Beach
@mychemicaljamie He got his name from an Oral Roberts sermon in which Roberts claimed that he had a vision where a 900 foot Jesus told him to build a hospital.
He got it from a spiel by televangelist Oral Roberts back in the 80s who had claimed to have been visited by a 900 foot tall vision of Jesus. Said vision informing Mr Roberts that if he didn't raise a great deal of money quickly, the 900 foot Jesus would return to strike him down. And really, yeah. He said that and it worked.
@@brianoneil9662 Yeah... I'm from the same area (and time) he's from. Televangelists and bible-thumping conmen with the flocks of dimwits were everywhere. Come to think of it, I knew just about as many people who lost their minds to a Jesus cult as drugs.

As a retired DJ from Dallas, I can say Mr. Jesus helped me pack many floors during my career.
One of my favorite artists of the early 90's.
I liked this artist a lot. Very creative lyrics. Kind of dark in some cases like this song.
For some reason this song popped in my head today on a loop and i had to seek it out. I always appreciated mc 900 ft jesus for not following the “pop formula”. Love the story telling and usually no repetitious choruses. Good stuff ! The city sleeps is a great song too.
That's excactly why I'm here today.
Love the sax, love the beats, love the scratches, love MC!
was on concert in Barca, had the same feeling, but there was Trumpet
1991 this was released - timeless song, absolutely brilliant rap...I love this and listen to it all the time...
We who were in our teens and early 20s back in the late '80s-mid '90s were spoiled on some killer good music from all genres!!
CLASSIC! Glad the YT got the video up, YT is literally the museum that contains my musical history from the late 60s to right now. I remember this being played in the "alternative" dance clubs in NJ/Philly in the late 90s, early 2000s.

I got the first couple of albums in the 90's and later learned that he and I attended the same college in Kentucky at different times.
Absolutely killer bass line......

Major Jamiroquai vibes.
Man, I forgot all about this! Thanks for the upload!
This reminds me of being 16. Love it
it reminds me of bein' 26! dang, i wanna go-back-in-time, yo~~~
So glad I found this! Couldn't even remember the band name for a long time!
The fact homie was a 34yr old white dude releasing this in 1991 is purely fckn mind blowing!!!!!!!
I think the fact he was 34 is actually the reason it's so good. Kids can't come up with a take on life like this, or like "Adventures in Failure."
Still sounds fresh!
It has legs!
This is still sick as fuxx
Once again, WLIR was the first and only station where I heard this song.
same here
If you ain't ole school, you have not a clue! Only my generation can fathom this music!
honestly rocks
This was brillant work.
We had old man Bush in the WH a little war in Iraq (pre-season).

My teacher always rapped this in class. Cool guy.
You probably see me hanging around
I'm a very familiar face in this town
a day doesn't go by I don't meet
alot of my friends walking down the street
I'm never too busy to stop by the way
and I always have something pleasant to say
maybe some perceptive thoughts about the weather
maybe the latest news from wall street whatever
I can stand around all day; making small talk
pushing platitudes, blocking the side walk
Tying people up for hours at ease
my one big talent is shooting the breeze
when they start to squirm ; I really get going
but only my half faced smile is showing
why can't they see what I;'m trying to hide
I'm busting a gut ; laughing on the inside
Send a smile when they say hello
I can see they think I'm a little bit slow
But after a while with me they look dazed
their eyes are covered with a doughnut glaze
I really cook when I see that look
I hit em with every cliche in the book
their knees wobble and they start to wheeze
It's like they are begging for permission to leave
they think they are having a brush with stupidity
I don't laugh , even though It's killing me
watching them wilt like day old flowers
ticking off the minutes as they turn to hours
they are wondering how much more they can take
I give em a friendly smile and a handshake
I say goodbye so very polietly
and i say hello to the killer inside me
Everybody has their doubts about my sanity
but nothing happens because they all feel sorry for me
I got the whole town under my thumb
and all I gotta do is keep acting dumb
Oh boy, that guy Lou , that guy
a little on the slow side, but wouldn't hurt a fly
such a gentleman, oh yes I know
Sure can talk your ear off though
I tip my hat and pretend I don't hear
grinning like a half wit from ear to ear
I can think of a thousand ways to say hello
so I start through them ALL, going real slow
It Isn't hard, and act like I care
how can they be so completely unaware
of the truth, the answer is always denied me
so I introduce them to the killer inside me
Great lyrics
Original raps, fantastic fucking beats. How could you be so completely unaware.
Best song on the album. And that's saying something.
while the city sleeps was the best song on the album.
My fave is Adventures in Failure

Totally predicted the current national obsession with true crime,
