- 💥We wanted to share a quick first prototype for a standing tray washing station that utilizes a 2000psi PowerWasher! 💦 The idea is to have a system where you can reduce the repetition required during the tray washing process! We are going to keep playing with more designs in the future!

Great Ideas! Efficiency around my urban farm is the number one limiting factor for how much I can produce. Cleaning trays can take a whole day!

I love your creativity and ingenuity and thinking out loud and telling us why you did things so we don't have to make the same mistakes. Love love love that you are like the consumer report testing grounds for new ideas and save us the newbies and oldies the trouble of reinventing the wheel with new ideas. You are a real treasure and thank you ever so much. Now just one thing that is of some concern for us here in California. Our area, central coast, has just been declared as extreme drought conditions. Water is going to be rationed and expensive. Here's me thinking out loud too. Just wondering if air would do the same thing as water? High pressure and same set up with an air hose? I really appreciate being able to run this by you knowing you will give it a thought and let me know if it is worth it. I based my whole micro green start up on your how to videos and final results. Did I mention I really love you guys and what you do?? Thanks again so much!!!!!!
Same issue as other persons setup. Lots of water being wasted. Would be intresting to put this setup into a small kiddy pool and see how much water is getting used to wash X ttays.

We use two of the 7.5 in. x 7.5 in. x 5.5 in. Tan Brown Planter Wall Block from home depot on top of a table. The microgreen tray drops down in perfectly
a tank on the bottom collecting the water was a good idea

Great start, as a suggestion if you were to use say four gets placed two above and two below so the spray covers the tray. You can then connect them to one inlet that way the tray could be done in a single pass. This would allow a feed in and exit rout, so they go in one end out the other completely cleaned.
Totally agreed! The main issue is I have no idea what to buy to create such a system… going to dig into this a bit more this weekend!

Nice. Try to Look for a different head for your power washer that expands the spray to almost a full tray a 40 degree spray head or so might work... Might speed things up...I have been thinking about something like this for a while but haven't got off my butt to do it yet. PLexi Glass sheet cut to fit the side your on will keep you dry and clear so you can see what you are doing.
That was a 40 degree spray head! I’ll have to try increasing the distance perhaps or just getting some new nozzles!
Someone gave the suggestion of using a barrel to wash in and that might work quite well! Going to play some more with the designs 🤗🌱🌱
Bring a bar of soap with you and have a shower at the same time. lol. There are nozzles you can get that have a wider spray pattern and can reduce the pressure with different size orifices as well.
Great way to keep things clean, organized and ready to go when needed
Very interested in seeing what you come up with. Going outside is too inconvenient for my setup. Right now I use the 1 gallon Champin pump sprayers. One made for bleach and one for water. I spray them into diy double sinks made from big box store totes with pvc sink drainage. Then stack them on the narrow metro rack shelves to dry. I saw one grower on Reddit use a uv light above his trays for disinfecting but he was using on his freshly harvested microgreens instead of the clean trays.
Des the bleach break down before you use the tray? I'd be worried that the bleach would affect the microgreens when planted up?
@@davedave8677 Yes, the bleach is diluted and evaporates while it's on the drying rack like dishes. I don't use substrate so it's even more important for me to make sure that my trays are sterilized. I'm looking into the disinfecting tablets commonly used by restaurants but I'm waiting to hear back about longterm use with hdpe.

Maybe set up the frame on top an empty barrel. And have a grill secured a few inches below the lip of the barrel, position the power washer in a downward orientation. This pushes the water through the tray, through the grill, and into the barrel, limiting but not completely eliminating the overspray.
It also collects the water which can then be repurposed

@@coyotekylie on average the three racks produce 72 trays per week to wash - 6 levels, 4 “tray spaces” on average per level, and 3 trays per “tray space” if you will… a bottom, middle and top tray. That’s not including the little sprouting trays which we can fit 4 “tray spaces” per regular 1020 “tray space”…. So anywhere from 72ish up to around 130 on average… if we grow anything outdoors, that’s additional trays as well…

Is pressure washing a regulatory requirement?
No, just a method for rinsing! There are so many ways to ways and sanitize trays… really we’re just playing with different methods to see what feels the best and works!
I enjoy washing dishes by hand (!) and wear rubber gloves for the job. But the water is too hot to be comfortable even with sturdy gloves on, so I have learned to buy one size too big and put cotton gloves under the rubber gloves for better insulation and comfort. It works well. I don't know if such an idea has any application for you or not. As other viewers have said similarly, what if you had two power washers with the nozzles closely mounted one above the other so that you could wash a tray with one pass? To protect your clothes from spray, what if you wore one of those plastic protective "gowns" that cover the front of medical workers that we see so much of on TV caring for covid patients in hospitals? That wouldn't help your face much, but then there are face shields. My poor dentist wears one all day long.
Personally, I could not justify using so much water. At the very least, save it as gray water for other uses. Perhaps if you anchored the trays (several) and had the pressure gun on a pivoting head then the water could be better conserved and you would not have to worry about personal injury etc. In other words you are moving the pressure gun and not the trays - like the water gun game at an amusement park.
It doesn’t use a lot of water, more pressure really… also, we are working on a new system to capture all the water and also use different sources of water. Potentially even just using air instead of water. This was a super rough prototype to play with the idea and I hear your concerns!

Oh, yeah, definitely, lol! Like I said, super rough prototype, just hooked a simple power washer to a suuuper basic frame and saw how it performed… need a baseline before improving. We’re working on a multi-nozzle with brush system next. That’s why I said all throughout this, this is a super rough prototype and can definitely be improved a lot. 🤗🌱🌱
