I could actually see the Ferelden Circle reforming without bloodshed. Cullen before being brutally tortured by blood mages is a good guy and Gregoir relents when he's given proof the Circle can be saved with Irving's appearance Irving and Gregoir > Orsino and Meredith. Not that it's hard to be.
Yeah not all Circles where bad or even uncomfortable to begin with. Kirkwall was infamous even to the common folk for being the worst Circle to be at. It was so bad that mages would escape and flee just to run to another Circle and beg to be accepted there instead. Anyway Ferelden was probably one of the most lenient of all the Circles probably due to being on a secluded island and in a well fortified tower. The mages are well looked after and Templars actually did their jobs there. They stood watch but let the mages. The downside to this approach though was...well you saw what happened to the Circle. It collapsed the moment a big threat emerged.
@annasukasuperfan Really? Origin's Templars seem relatively sane. Gregoir takes back the Rite of Annulment just on Irvin's words, and the guy in Lothering, knowing you're a mage, lets you go.
There’s a theory that Kirkwall is crazier because of Corypheus. His twisted mind sending the call near Kirkwall has a direct effect on Darkspawn and an indirect effect on normal people, making their twisted and evil impulses stronger, thus explaining Meredith, Bartrand, that Mage Frankenstein who killed mama Hawke and all other craziness... or that is what the theory says in the Legacy DLC.
Another evidence reinforcing this theory is Justice/Anders. Compare him and the spirit in DA: Awakening with him in DA:2. The twist of Justice into Vengeance seems too much for a spirit that powerful for Anders and his carefree personality. Corypheus and his calling near Kirkwall would explain how things could get that far.
Thaha, i've spent so many hours in this game and just today have i found out this is a thing! Gotta love origins, still surprises me after what...almost 10 years now?
I'm just happy he is still the loveable blonde dork in Inquisition. I played a female mage and it was a really satisfying romance story. Plus, Cullen deserves to be happy after all the bullshit he had to go through for 10 years, what with constant night terrors and the lyrium withdrawals.
I was a MALE mage and even I liked the guy a lot. I read that Jowan was once planned to be a companion in Origins. I'd take Cullen over him ANY day. Every time I play through the game I wish I could help this guy.
which in absolutely no way excuses his behavior in DA2 where he knows that mages under his care are getting made tranquil even though they passed their Harrowing AND are getting abused. And he does absoltely nothing. At least Meredith has the excuse of being under the idol's influence.
The idol only boosts people behavor don't actually create it. Meredith was a bitch even before the red lyrium's idol. She always had hate mages and she always had the secret desire to burn them all. Nothing, and nobody, actually had forces her to do what she has done. I'm sorry (actually not lol) but there are no excuses for her. Neither for Orsino (and don't forget who was the man behind the fool that murdered Hawke's mother). They both were strong and foolishly anchored in their insane beliefs, both really believed they were right. But coming back to Cullen...he's a "soldier", a templar... and became that because he believes in a cause. And Meredith? Well, we all know she is the greatest Knight-Commander and all these things... but focus us on Cullen: at that time she was his boss and he was her second in comand, nothing more. And more important thing: Cullen trusts Meredith, he believed in her because she never gave him a reason to not do it. I mean: he always knew about her hatred for the mages but he never thought the she can actually do something extreme against them due to the influence of the chantry, and then happened and everything was next... was all completely crazy. Orsino transform himself in an abominion and plus helped the fool who killed Hawke's mother, don't forget about it. Meredith -in spite of the fact that you help her or not- turns on you called you a "threat" , and then all the hatred she buried for years comes on surface amplified by the fragment of the red lyrium she put in her sword. After that you just find yourself to have to kill both Orsino and Meredith. Simply.... perfect. We have to said that when all goes mad, Cullen understand that Meredith was consumed by red lyrium and helped you to stop her along with the party. So... no... Cullen is all what you want: is a dork, is a conviced templar... but he's not a murderer or a bad guy and is even not a bad person. Maybe he wanted all the Circle dead back in Ferelden, but he was... unstable, and traumatized, after being tortured by visions for... days... maybe? In da2 he was stable and said he left the past in Ferelden, and he did it. If not he would have acted like Meredith, even without the help of the red lyrium's idol. Or Anders who blew up a church, without being under a red lyrium's idol influence. He did for his cause, okay, but he actually killed a ton od innocent people in the process. So... that lyrium will also be evil ... but it is enough to see Bartrand and Meredith to understand what kind of subject freaks out. If not, also Varric (to whom you can decide if you let keep a piece of the idol for himself or not) would end up like Meredith and his brother (Bartrand), but it didn't happen. And, yes, I get your point about "he knows that mages under his care are getting made tranquil even though they passed their Harrowing AND are getting abused. And he does absoltely nothing" but Cullen truly had no power, no voice in the chapter. Not until the finale battle in da2 when everybody seen was evident that she was actually out of control. He then takes control of the situation and do something... sides with Hawke and do the right thing: to stop Meredith, and saving the mages. He did it. Maybe late, but he did it. Before he has nor the power or the chance to go against her with all the Templar's Order at her side. Geez, he would have been killed on the spot as a traitor! lol We've to remember that templar are soldier: they execute orders, don't question them. Especially when orders comes frome their Knight-Commander...their highest authority, the person who should guide them... especially when no ones (in the Order ecc...) had the idea she was all but a Knight-Commander doing her work.So ... for this and the following reasons ... I say that Meredith is anything but excuse, the same for Orsino. Gregoir and Irving at least were smart enough, and sane, to know what to challenge each other so, in a totaly random way, it would mean for both sides: a lot of dead, no winner. In fact, the fight against the Kirkwall circle will extend to the rest of Thedas, but details. Instead Meredith and Orsino were both extremists crazy and essentially pushed for a fight from the beginning. They craved it more than anything else. And they had it. Result: both dead, a lot of victims from both sides. So not ... Meredith cannot be excused. Nor Orsino. Nor even condemn Cullen. Moreover, if I remember correctly ... it does not seem to me that Greogoir was less hostile and with an iron fist with mages than Meredith was. So ... everyone, even Cullen, thought she was only using the iron fist, like Gregoir with Irving and the Circle at Ferelden. Nothing new then. Not for the Templars, not for Cullen. In fact ... when Meredith is destroyed, Cullen is upset and feels like shit for not having noticed anything. Especially after Ferelden. In conclusion? Meredith was a bitch, but she was a smart bitch. I have to admit it. She practically covered her shoulders by justifying her every action with the old "TemplarVSMages" and "blood magic" stories and did what she wanted. The confirmation that she's a calculator and liar bitch ... we have it at the end when she sentece Hawke's death and tries to send against the player all the Kirkwall Templars' Order (even if we have supported her. Isn't adorable how she stabs us in the back in the end, is it?) and put Hakwe and, basically, all the party in a bag for corpses. Well... wonderful. So... after all that (sorry for the lenght, truly) my point is: we can truly condamn Cullen and pardon Meredith? Ehm... I think not. Take Bartrand: he was a bastard before the idole and... he just got worse and made it clear once and for all after it. Never else. The same happened to Meredith. No more nor less. Sorry for the poem but i tried to explain myself, my reasons and my point of views, the best I could. You know... to not create misunderstanding :') ps: I know I'm... a bit late, but I have to say mine 🌹
So I havent played DA:O in YEARS so i honestly never knew he and the warden met even though he does talk about it in Inquisition. I just played it and heard some mage in the background mention Cullen and ended up finding him too. His crush is so cute and it so strange because as a female elf in Inquisition i romanced him. And happened to do the same in Origins. Thats so cute
Damn I didn’t found this out until the second part with the spell scene. I gotta replay this eventually and not blaze through it. I don’t how i missed this scene
Ooh, I'm going to take my Mage Niobe Amell to Dragon Age: Inquisition soon. I have promised myself I am going to play Dragon Age II first, She's my first character and Cullen was stammering and blushing and looking at her with hungry eyes in the tower, and having the same freak out when we were ready to face Uldred. This is intriguing, after being brutally kicked to the curb by the magnificent Alistair, I was hoping Niobe would get a great rebound romance. Cullen appears to be the Perfect choice. I hope I get to flaunt the new boyfriend in front of Alistair. Come on Bioware please? I know its 4 or 5 years late for me to catch the Dragon Age bug, but now I'm hooked. I'm sad to hear Zevran won't be in Inquisition. My second Origins character is going to romance the elf.
Yes and I also know that we are probably never going to play our Warden again. This is right after I played my first Warden and wanted to work on her story more. I am very late to learning about Dragon Age, but I am now hooked big time. I have a Cousland in Denerim, an Amell (a Blood Mage this time) about to face the Arch-Demon, a Brosca in the Korcari Wilds and a Tabris in Ostagar. I also have Niobe Hawke in Act 1 (ready to go on the Deep Roads expedition) and Susannah Hawke beginning Act 3 (first mission: go see what has happened at the Bone Pit Mines). I decided Niobe is a traditional Amell family name just because I began the game without knowing anything about DA2. Now I know that she is that [awful] child that Hawke reads about in the gossipy letter at the Hawke estate.
I feel at some point they will have to address the wardens that are still alive, in my mind anyways I feel they will have to bring closure to him/her. To me he/her is just too powerful for Bioware to ignore.
Hee, missed the comment from Jowan on my playthrough Cullen's had quite a bit of development between the the games. Wonder if he'll show up in future installments, possibily even as a companian.
Im so sorry but watching him talk with Amell cracks me up...I feel so bad but i cant stop laughing...I APOLOGIZE CULLEN. MAY YOUR GIRLFRIEND(AMELL) NOT SHOOT LIGHTING AT ME.
Since they said there is a "good chance" that you're Warden and Hawke will be in Inquisition; I wonder what would happen if you imported a save where you had a female mage who flirted with Cullen. I'm hoping there would be some kind of cat fight between the Warden and your Inquisitor to see who would be with Cullen.
My character isn't Aphrodite or Adonis, so half the party shouldn't be infatuated with him. Origins' romance options were fine. When Zevron approaches my Warden, I tell him I'm flattered but he needn't bother, and he's cool with it. Origins gives you the chance to play your character as flirty, rude, proper or awkward as you like. But DA2 bugged me, because any friendly word will make everyone fall for Hawk, then they'll get offended if he rejects their advances. Sorry if I don't want to romance a mage who's always whining about unfairness, and has a permanent on-board passenger (Anders & Justice). I'd like to see the romance options not surface unless you're encouraging them. Generally speaking, most characters not expressing an interest unless you actually flirt with them, the obvious exceptions being chronic flirts like Zevron.
I don't know, they could have a character that's usually put down by others who falls in love with anyone who shows kindness. Especially the player. They should totally put a stalker in the game, kind of as a punishment for being a nice person XD You don't often see that. Except in Origins where saving your cousin from being raped by killing her kidnapper loses you the Arls at the Landsmeet... That was a beautiful dick move!
its hilarious how after he freaks out when you "ask to get to know him better" he runs away down the hall. like oh my god how awkward can you get ...

Fucking Jowan-
Best bruh-bruh for life.
He is moron though.
No wonder he was infatuated. You're character was a sexy beast. This has to be on PC
So you can't romance him as the Warden Mage, but you can romance him as the Inquisitor Mage? Gotta be some irony in there somewhere XD
EDIT: thankyou for the replies and likes everyone :)
Divine Emma I guess it's character development
He's no longer a templar in Inquisition.
Divine Emma Good writing and character development.
+TurnBased Combat yeah, Cullen changed so much... That's so cool too see that. :3
He wasn't... Ripe yet.
The best parrt of this scene is Jowan being an annoying brother or cullen running away. I can’t decide.
and he'll have the absolute nerve to ask a Romanced Leliana if the Warden asks about him.
zEVRAN *NO*
ZEVRAN YES xD
I could actually see the Ferelden Circle reforming without bloodshed. Cullen before being brutally tortured by blood mages is a good guy and Gregoir relents when he's given proof the Circle can be saved with Irving's appearance
Irving and Gregoir > Orsino and Meredith.
He's actually so adorable here, I love that he kept some of his awkwardness in DAI
LOL ZEVRAN
He's changed a lot
"I've never met her like again."
In walks my Levellan.
Omg "the one thing I wanted but could never have" I didn't realize he was talking about me!! XD
I'll have to make things right in Inquisition XD
definitely romancing in Inquisition as a human mage, unfortunately he's locked as straight but it won't stop me
All the power to you man
Oh Zevran. Thank you for deeming it worth the effort to chime in.
I live how Cullen mentions his little crush on the Warden a few times in inquisition 😂😂 after all those years too
@annasukasuperfan Really? Origin's Templars seem relatively sane. Gregoir takes back the Rite of Annulment just on Irvin's words, and the guy in Lothering, knowing you're a mage, lets you go.
Gregoir is also Rhys father
This is why I love Zevran XD
Awwwwwwwww he is an even bigger bumbling fool then alistair but thats what makes him cute WHY CAN'T HE BE LIKE THAT IN INQUISITION
I was a red headed human mage in Origins and flirted with Cullen. In inquisition I was a red headed mage again, and romanced him. Yay.
Cullen was so adorable back in Origins, and he's matured well in DA2. Hope he'll be back in future installments. :D
Thaha, i've spent so many hours in this game and just today have i found out this is a thing!
Gotta love origins, still surprises me after what...almost 10 years now?
So torn. I usually use the romance mod for the mage origin just so I can kiss him, but I really like watching him run down the hall 😂
Biggest decision in the game tbh
LOL Zevran's comments.
I remember I thought he was super creepy. It's still kind of a gross situation 😆
Let's not forget the poor martyred Ser Otto in the alienage.
I'm just happy he is still the loveable blonde dork in Inquisition. I played a female mage and it was a really satisfying romance story. Plus, Cullen deserves to be happy after all the bullshit he had to go through for 10 years, what with constant night terrors and the lyrium withdrawals.
It’s always the blonde Templar’s they go for.
Cullen x The Inquisitor. It's gonna happen now. :)
The naughty mage and the hapless recruit.
I can't find that hairstyle anywhere on Nexus
I just discovered his existence in dao. Wow.
I must buy inquisition.
I was a MALE mage and even I liked the guy a lot.
I read that Jowan was once planned to be a companion in Origins. I'd take Cullen over him ANY day. Every time I play through the game I wish I could help this guy.
Aww i remember that scene, i was blushing when i got to that part :3
I completely forgot about this until I he mentioned it in Inquisition. Oh Cullen, I love you and I wish I could gaymance you.
Gods he was so innocent
I still don’t understand how we were supposed to interpret Cullen as a creep. I mean he was just a himbo!
which in absolutely no way excuses his behavior in DA2 where he knows that mages under his care are getting made tranquil even though they passed their Harrowing AND are getting abused.
Geez, he would have been killed on the spot as a traitor! lol
We've to remember that templar are soldier: they execute orders, don't question them.
You know... to not create misunderstanding :')
ps: I know I'm... a bit late, but I have to say mine 🌹
The most cute male character I ever met in Dragon Age >v
Lol i even didnt know that Cullen from inquisition was in origins, he is one of few characters who was in all 3 dragon ages.
Ah good old Knight Captain Cullen (After Origins) one of only a few characters that are in all three games.
It all started here, guys.
Wow, Jowan...
Lol Zevran 😂
I wish they added more dialogues that you are related to Grey Warden
Cullen's past is interesting lol
Damn I didn’t found this out until the second part with the spell scene. I gotta replay this eventually and not blaze through it. I don’t how i missed this scene
Every guy ever thinking bout their crush...
i’m sorry but this is SO creepy. It’s like a prison guard having a crush on a prisoner
He's basically a more shy alistair
My second Origins character is going to romance the elf.
klassytome Fun fact if you didn't know but you probably do your character is technically related to the protagonist in DA:2.
Jerry Moore I agree completely. My first Warden feels incomplete and I am sure all of my other Warden's stories will just feel unresolved.
klassytome I just wonder how they will address him. Will they force us to kill him/her, which to me seems likely.
I wish there were more interactions with him😔
Hee, missed the comment from Jowan on my playthrough
Cullen's had quite a bit of development between the the games. Wonder if he'll show up in future installments, possibily even as a companian.
I played as a female circle mage the first time I played this game. I actually forgot he had a crush on my warden.
The only almost-decent-not-playable- templar in the whole game
He's so cute X3
then he off to marry his trauma...literally face his trauma.
Cullen definitely wants to slay her. Just not with the sword on his back.
Im so sorry but watching him talk with Amell cracks me up...I feel so bad but i cant stop laughing...I APOLOGIZE CULLEN. MAY YOUR GIRLFRIEND(AMELL) NOT SHOOT LIGHTING AT ME.
it seems like unfinished plot/romance line like with Elf lady and her kid in Cousland origin
YAY for finally getting Cullen-love in DA:I!
I accidentally romanced Leliana... :-P
She looks like Miranda from Mass Effect 2.
I love Cullen, thank you for this video, also in your Amell's Past video Daylen mentioned having an older sister is this supposed to be her?
this video is nine years old atm but does anyone know if this also happens with an elven mage ?
Yes
As long as she's a lady, yes.
