    When Jessica jumped into the water it wasn’t air bubbles surrounding her. It was in fact two years of fairing dust coming out of her pores!.

      Since the winds were supposed to be shifting north, we're very happy we make it across the stream before they did so. By the time we went to anchor they were getting strong, and that would have been a very uncomfortable ride!!

    The adventure to the top of the mast demonstrates why I added a couple of folding steps at the top of the mast to stabilise the person trying to work up there. I also have one of these on the inside edge of the stbd hull below the dinghy gantry. When raising and lowering the dinghy into the water and wanting to move from boat to dinghy or back, that step has been a godsend.

    Quick navigation question: when you cross the Gulf Stream do you pre-calculate a course to steer and adjust your heading accordingly, or do you set your heading to your destination (on Navionics?) and keep your heading that way for the whole passage?

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  7 місяців тому +2

      You set for the destination accounting for drift - the angle changes based on the current along the route. Smart people calculate this ahead of time, we just don't based on the chartplotter showing our rate of drift and angle.

    surprised the water was that cold. I had thought it would be lukewarm bathtub temp. Seeing all the cruise ships docked together like that didn't make me want to go on a cruise. Mooring poles are the worst. No idea why marinas use them, creates a time crisis whenever there is any wind and it seems like there is always something to adjust.
    Perhaps they are easier with small boats where you can just push the boat around, but not even then.

    • @johnmayer3433
      @johnmayer3433 7 місяців тому

      Over here in the Baltic Sea they are used almost in any marina. Good for winds of fifty knots and changing water levels of plus/minus one meter. So what is your problem?

    • @bfs007a
      @bfs007a 7 місяців тому

      @@johnmayer3433 I am in the baltic sea and I would not agree, most where I have been (from stockholm and southwards, they might be more popular in the north) thankfully do not use them.
      The only thing they've ever been good for for me is causing exactly the situation on the screen where unless you are a lot of people you have to choose what pole to attach to and jackknifing the boat in high winds. Basically they restrict the space that can be used to maneuver and are extra things that can damage the boat.
      And if you hit them in high winds they are too weak to actually stop several tons of boat anyway, best case they'll bend an send you in another direction.
      Then again, I might have bad experiences. :-)

    • @johnmayer3433
      @johnmayer3433 7 місяців тому

      @@bfs007a You are right, mooring poles are not found in Sweden where the bottom is granite for obvious reasons. In Denmark and Germany they are found anywhere, sometimes in Poland. Nowadays it's mostly floating docks that are tricky if the float is tiny and only good for persons of less than say 70 kg 😉. I am sailing mostly single handed and have always found poles an easy way to dock as soon as you have learned to use them to your advantage. Especially in high winds they are way safer than mooring stern buoyies or stern anchors.

    • @bfs007a
      @bfs007a 7 місяців тому

      @@johnmayer3433 You probably have superior ability to me, granted I am not as used to poles as other means.
      As I hinted, I am also often single-handed, and those poles will be my doom. I have narrowly avoided ending up between the pole and 5 tons of rolling boat several times.
      I actually like floating (Y) docks, possibly because I avoid try standing on them, again to avoid dying. :-)
      And in high winds, it is just a matter of aiming, putting out a lot of fenders and when you are in, you are in.
      But it is strange how much is up to personal taste in sailing. And I suppose it would be boring if it wasn't.

    • @johnmayer3433
      @johnmayer3433 7 місяців тому

      @@bfs007a I don't think it is a matter of personal taste but rather one of initial training. How do you deal with stern mooring buoys in high winds, single handed. Since I plan to sail in Sweden in the summer I am really interested in learning new tricks.
