The Peace Mission Movement is also a stunning example of a successful cooperative movement, enlisting at least 40,000 direct participants in the NE US in the 1930s, and successful enough to retain properties and businesses adequate to provide for surviving members to the present day.

The challenge of all thoughtful persons is to come to the proper balance between rights to property and the protection of human rights. Out of many years of study, the "ism" I find best achieves this proper balance is "cooperative individualism". In the design of socio-political arrangements and institutions the just objective and just outcome ought to be to secure and protect individual liberty within a cooperative societal framework. Privilege, hierarchy and monopoly are the enemies of cooperative individualism. There is a long list of thoughtful writers who over several centuries offered and supported their views on what is necessary for such a society to be established and maintained. One of these writers, the American political economist Henry George, is shown here as the image associated with this post. If you have never heard of Henry George or read any of his works you owe it to yourself to do an online search about him.
Since 1932 there has been a Henry George School of Social Science headquartered in New York City. From that time until the late 1960s, the school was expanding all across the United States, Canada, and several other countries. Unfortunately, as an adult education program that did not meet the criteria for the granting of degrees, the Henry George Schools lost the ability to attract credential-seeking students who began to attend local community colleges and other state-supported institutions. New York City has been an important exception, and the school today offers in-class courses as well as online lectures and courses over Zoom.
I have served on the faculty of the Henry George School for many years. Recently, I completed a lecture series on the history of money, banking and credit. Beginning in September, I will deliver lectures on "Henry George, Karl Marx and their followers." This series of lectures would, I suspect, be of some interest and value to those of you who think of yourself as socialist in your political, social and economic perspectives. Those of you who embrace individualist perspectives may find some clarity with Henry George's treatment of rights of property as compared to that by Karl Marx. These lectures are offered free of charge but you must register in advance through the school's website.

"why is this history not better known" was raised by Laura. independent business is seen as a threat to corporate and state control (for all races) but for black entrepreneurs, triple threat by white racists as well. welfare was offered by the state like throwing a rotten bone after crushing small businesses. also, DECENTRALIZED economy vs CENTRALIZED economy is the fundamental dichotomy of economy, not "socialist vs capitalist." the cooperative business is actually a gorgeous hybrid of decentralized for profit business and decentralized non government grass roots social sharing "socialism." The -ism seems to be the problem, not the capital or the commune:) black and white thinking is the greatest thorn in the side of human consciousness, in human intellectual understanding.

ok. But "dichotomy" is the wrong term., it is a partition into parts. Central planning and decentralized organisation are not mutually exclusive, they are both organizational paradigms with good fitness for certain purposes, bad fitness for others. The main partition in economics (though still not perfectly a partition) is that between owners (the employers) and workers (the employed), or between rentiers (those who receive unearned income) and workers (who earn their income). That is a pretty sharp distinction, most, not all, but most people fall in one or the other class if you aggregate their income, so e.g., determine whether the majority comes from work or from rent.

"COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS WE CAN"
    "SERENITY PRAYER"
God grant us the Courage to change the things we can change, the Serenity to accept those we cannot change and the Wisdom to know the difference.Still God,grant us the Courage not give up on what we think is right, even though we think it is hopeless!
    "EMPOWERMENT"
Why do Black folk refuse to empower themselves, when they can by willingness & action.Boycotts of major stores that have racial profiling policies. Can empower Black folk,we are America's biggest consumers. This is a major power that we are not using.Corporate America needs the Black dollar in order to continue to get rich, get it!If Black folk want change in their children's education, then we need to show up at PTA meetings and voice what we want for our children.Instead of accepting what is given.Stop making excuses.Education is what our children need for their future,in order to be productive members of society. It is imperative that parents have a say so about their education, this is more empowerment Black folks. Now the racial issue, according to some of the "Conscious community",Black folk can't empower themselves due to racism. Some even promote racial tensions, which will not be productive for Black folk.Racism isn't going anywhere,so if your not use to it,get use to it.Don't allow it to be a convenient excuse not to empower yourselves Black folk.Empowerment in Black communities can happen by believing that it can happen. It's time to start with the simple word "No".No we will not allow guns to be flooded into our communities. No to the gentrification of our communities. No to living in fear and under siege due the "Plague of Gun Violence",in the community. No to those who try to stop our empowerment.Economic empowerment can be achieved by forming coalitions.Taking the Black dollar and keeping it in the Black communities,by way of planning and execution.Black folk have more assets and resources than realized, that are not being used to empower ourselves. These are simple solutions believe it or not.Just need to ask yourselves have we had "Enough"?President Obama is only going to be in office until 2016,Black folks's time is now.Stop listening to the naysayers, they don't have our best interest at heart.Even though they look like us.We must promote our own empowerment in order to change our conditions & status in society.I don't have all the ideas & solutions, still those that I've given will work. So as Arsenio Hall says Black folk "Lets Get Busy".............................No Violence-Know Peace!
