From the time I saw Megazone 23 when I was in junior high school, it was my OBSESSION!!! Especially the Garland. I had every artbook and sourcebook that there was to be found in America at the time, and in my area, I was considered THE person to go to if someone had questions on it...but the time I was 15! I was the only one in my area that had managed to track down an original tape for PArt 1 and Part 2 when they were out....and thanks to a trip to Japan the summer that I graduated high school...I was able to bring home both parts of Part 3, as well as the soundtracks for all the films.
To this day, the Garland is STILL one of my favorite mecha of all time because it is more realistic in scope and size than all other mecha created....but I preferred it in motorcycle mode at all times, especially the Proto-Garland from Part 2. I even studied auto and motorcycle design to see if I could build a functional motorcycle for the Proto-Garland to actually ride! lol
And then when Carl Macek bastardized it for his failed Robotech: The Movie...I was one of only 7 people in the theater when it released, and I could NOT have been angrier at the man for destroying what I loved.

I can't help but feel like Robotech The Movie could've had the Megazone 23 story act as an epilogue to The New Generation with the generation ship itself being revealed to be the SDF-3 trying to preserve human culture as the EVE program goes so far as to brainwash the population entirely.
Mark could be Rick and Lisa's son who they wanted to be raised in a world without war. Hell, EVE could be an A.I. program who's personality was directly based on Lynn Minmei herself. The Dezalg could be an Invid faction and reason the SDF-3 couldn't make it to Earth. Perhaps some of the new animation like the alternate ending would involve Scott Bernard arriving to help defeat said enemy.

I was looking for a proper Megazone 23 review and finally found it! Great video!
I personally enjoyed parts 1 and 3 the most. Part 1 (the original Megazone 23) felt light, 1980s style, but was also surprisingly thought-provoking with its Matrix-esque Big Reveal. I didn't quite get the various plot holes people saw in it. I guess they meant that it ended without a proper ending, but wasn't labeled as "part 1" back then?
Part 3 was unnecessary plot wise, but as a 2-part standalone story in the Megazone 23 universe it was decent and addressed some plot points from part 1, not to mention paying homage to the original.
To me part 2 wasn't as good as some claim it was. The change in art style and use of strongly contrasting, bright colors and dark edges highlighted all of the mistakes in animations. Certain animations were awfully choppy unlike the ones in the original Megazone 23. Also, if you look closely, sometimes the colors of key items change between frames (Eve's hair color in a poster in a scene with Lightning, Lightning's headband when he got hurt in the head, etc.). Finally, I completely loathed what they did to the character designs of Shogo, Yui and BD. Shogo looked unnecessarily different, but Yui looked just totally out of place with her good girl appearance (Sandy from Grease meets Janet from Rocky Horror Picture Show?). The funniest was BD Edwards, however. You know when did I realize the bad guy with purple-grey hair was BD? At the very end of the OVA. Simply because his name was never explicitly mentioned before and his character was so different. Lastly, the alien "enemy" mentioned in part 1 re-appears in part 2, but then suddenly disappears without mention.
Robotech: The Untold Story was just a horribly "ugh" idea.

The 80s teaching dub of Part 2 has always been one of my favorites. The English voices were good, the action was good, the ending was sad... and then hopeful. The addition of "Present for you" at the beginning of the tape where the narrator explains the backstory of how humans destroyed the Earth always made me kind of teary, and you didn't even need to watch Part 1 to understand it all.

All three parts were amazing in their own right. But the music and the art styles - especially in part 2 - were what made the series memorable for me. It was a pity that Kumi Miyasato didn't return for part 3 and was most known for her songs from Megazone vs. her own. She sold a couple albums and had disappeared from the animation and music scene all together.

The dub by ADV pronounces it Muh-cross. Prior to seeing the dub, I too called it Mack-ross. I figured since the ADV dub used the original Japanese names it was more accurate than Robotech and started using their pronunciation from then on. It wasn't until 2016 when I started making videos that people started telling me the ADV dub was wrong.

IDK why I'm replying to a 5 year old post but I've been seeing this said a lot. Personally I think the themes are very similar but it's a stretch to say they stole the idea from this movie. I think you could also very easily say the animation studio stole the idea from Plato's allegory of the cave. I don't believe either instance to be true though, I think what's more important is considering inspiration in an art piece and being respectful with that inspiration. Don't for example do a shot by shot recreation of a scene from a movie you're taking inspiration from when making yours. Do borrow ideas and themes and put your own spin on it. I loved watching Megazone 23 but I gotta give the Wachowski sisters some credit. If they were heavily inspired from this film, they ended up making something unique with enough subtext to allow multiple different interpretations. For how great and fun it is, Megazone 23 doesn't do that and I think that's okay.

When we saw part 2 together,he was already caught off guard by the names(Since the names of the international ver was different) and bits of the Delgaz attacks he never knew of(partially). In the end he was more saying that this is not "his" megazone 23 and how there was bits not shown off in the ver he saw, upon finding out it was Harmony Gold's edits.Though I did enjoy the original 2 part Ova and will soon look into part 3 if possible.

You know, I'm pretty against the grain in this. I think the part 2 designs worked pretty well to communicate that the dreamy illusion of Tokyo was dead. It's mentioned in part 1 that the population is under a bit of a hypnosis to convince them they are living in 80s Tokyo paradise, living lives seemingly more fulfilling than they actually are. Shogo in part 1 is not an 80s action hero. He is a part time McDonald's worker who uses a motorcycle to try pick up girls. BD is not the comically evil smirking slimy military man that Shogo's perception sees him as, but is someone forced to take drastic action to try to salvage what he can from a no win war. Yui does not actually have blue hair.

Info-packed. Good work. I more or less grew up on the dub of MZ23p2, as it was one of a handful of bootlegs I bought from a shady guy at a convention as a kid. Particularly since DYRL (again, the dub) was another of those bootlegs I bought, learning about all of the connections between the two movies is a real eye-opener. Nothing hits home quite so strikingly as finally getting the details on stuff that was a big deal to one's childhood. The MZ23p2 dub included an unusual introductory sequence that made an attempt to bring viewers up to speed on what they missed in the first movie (which I hadn't seen). The extreme disconnect in character design was definitely something I've always wondered about.

I look back now and remember the first tape of Ranma I bought was 30 dollars for 2 episodes. And it wasn't even from the first season, just later down the line since Sam Goody didn't have anything in order
2 years ago, I walk out of a Wal-Mart with the first season, on DVD and remastered....on sale for 9 bucks.

That's weird, talking about explicit erotic titles for the home market and yet showing footage of Lemon Angel, a mid-night TV anime. Lemon Angel aired in 1988, with that particular shot at 4:10 being from episode 4, Lonely Twilight II. Perhaps actually using an example from a 1985 Cream Lemon would've been more applicable, like the ever-popular Part 4: Pop Chaser.
It should also be noted that Laserdiscs in the US import market saw large popularity, as they were often cheaper than VHS tapes in the 1980s. There's a weird absence of mentioning Fight! Iczer-1 in this context as well, as was mostly by the same production team and itself had a major influence on the subsequent OVAs and was one of the more popular imports.

The Japanese Blu ray release of MegaZone has been out for a while.
If things go as planned, the US release on Blu ray should happen later this month.
Corona has delayed the set a bit and there were some production hiccups but it'll probably be released within the next month. +Fingers crossed!+
    My copy is on order!
The AnimEigo Blu ray set will have all 3 OVAs and a ton of extras.
And yes, they have gotten all the English dubs for the series, too. AnimEigo is one of the few fan-friendly companies that actually goes the extra mile. (Discotek would be the other one that looks for and acquires alternate dubs!) That would include Streamline Pictures and ADV for MegaZone 1, Harmony Gold and ADV for MegaZone 2, and ADV for MegaZone 3. The HG dub for MegaZone 2 is very different -- they changed the character names for English but it's got all the footage and original music. The Japanese LD set that has MegaZone 1 and 2 had additional footage created for Robotech the Movie on the laserdisc that has MegaZone 2. I know this for a fact because I OWN that LD set. This was linking footage created fresh for Robotech the Movie and NOT footage from Southern Cross. That footage will not be on the AnimEigo Blu ray set as far as I know.
Robotech the Movie will never get an official release because it's in legal copyright hell and has been disavowed. I've seen the film and it's a mess. Not very good. The only release done of Robotech the Movie in the US on home media was on DVD. The audio track for the movie was released as a bonus on the Robotech Extended and Protoculture Box Sets ADV produced when they had the Robotech license. They didn't have the animation rights to Robotech the Movie but were allowed to put the audio on DVD. (ADV would have had to license the MegaZone footage separately from the Southern Cross footage. They did license MegaZone 23 but none of the footage from Robotech The Movie is in their MegaZone 23 release.)
Robotech the Movie was NOT the film Macek wanted to produce. He wanted to get the rights to Macross: Do You Remember Love, the 1984 Macross movie, and dub it with the Robotech cast but another company had already licensed the film. Regardless of what you think about HG, that dub would have been at least ten times better than the Japanese-produced English dub they made with Hong Kong and Australian characters. The dub for "Space Fortress Macross" (alternate name for DYRL) was awful. Many people have seen it in edited form as Clash of the Bionoids but it was released unedited on VHS under the simple title "Macross" in the US for a while in the mid-1990s. Still a bad dub! I don't think the "official" DYRL English dub has been issued on Japanese home video (VHS, LD) since the late 1980s. It was an English teaching tool they used since the movie was very popular in Japan.

ANd I wrote my previous post before watching the video.
I was not aware Manga Ent had licensed and dubbed MegaZone Pt 3, the worst part of the series! LOL
I presume the dub for Part 3 will be on the AnimEigo Blu ray unless there are licensing issues or AE wasn't aware that dub existed.
I never saw Part 3 until I picked up the ADV DVD releases for the MegaZone OVAs. Pt 3 was owned by a different company than Pts 1 and 2 so it was not on the LD set that I have.
Pt 3 is also very different, obviously the lowest budgeted of the installments. It's one of the worst conclusions for an OVA series I've seen and has very poor quality animation. They really should have let the series end at Pt 2!

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 3 роки тому

@daniel yuen The laserdisc set I have was issued in the 1990s so that happened before the IP transfer "reunited" all 3 OVAs under one owner. Again, I NEVER saw Part 3 until ADV Films released their DVD with their dub of the OVA on it.
The producers just ran out of money making Pt 3. OVA was just awful. Only Eve came out of this smelling semi-sweet and at least they didn't change her character design She about the only character you could recognize in Part 2! Pt 3 looks more like Part 1 but it's just wretchedly unfinished in parts.
