Octavio being credited as the lead behind this remix is factually true, but probably the funniest thing ever after the song has actively led to his defeat twice now.
He's had a while in solitary snow glob, its clear he served the time since 2. He only fought us because cuttlefish refused to believe him and sicced us on him. He equally assumed we had something to do with his army going awol, both of them so used to it being the other side's fault somehow when something big and suspicious happens. Neither side considered a third party would be responsibile to cause this big of a mess. Salmon run is the perfect cover to kidnap a bunch of unsuspecting octlings/inklings. They're isolated on a dangerous job site only grizzco seems to know the location of, and it could be days before someone realizes something bad happened to you. You'd be long gone.
You always gotta love it when the main antagonist starts kicking the ass of the new one simply out of principle. Some Doctor Eggman shit right there. Thanks for being awesome in the end, DJ Octavio.
I also see this as an RPG Bowser moment - mess with his troops, and he's more than willing to work with the heroes even if only temporarily to take out a common enemy.
Calamari Inkantation started as a song to free octarians from Octavio's rule and now it's a song of unity between Inklings and Octarians (and Salmonids and all marine life to some extent)
3:07 This way of Shiver's singing is one of the traditional Japanese singing styles used in enka and ondo (calamari inkantation is also originally ondo), which is called kobushi in Japanese.
I just discovered that Shiver's vocals in 3:07 are emulating the exact same tune the traditional flute in Spicy Calamari Inkantation plays during the second part of the song and it's giving me chills
Btw I’m pretty sure that’s Frye! Frye sings in a lot of Indian scales/ tones. I found out recently that Indians have a different form of music theory! It’s really dope!
He always was just blinded by revenge, but the Octarians have always been Octavio's ultimate priority. The thing is his immense need to attack the Inklings in turn for their victory over the Octarians during the Great Turf War, something that almost nobody in the present day knows or cares about, lead him to brainwash his people to share his need to spite the Inklings. Octavio himself likes the Calamari Inkantation, even though its mystical harmonic properties directly counteract his efforts to push the Inklings as straightforward enemies and instead encouraged most of his army to move to the surface in favor of peace with Inklings. By the end of 2, he's about calmed down enough to a) join in on Order vs. Chaos with Mini-Judd and a cast mostly consisting of Inklings and Inkling sympathizers (and ON Pearl's side at that, despite Marina being an Octoling) and b) disregard another attempt at stealing the Great Zapfish to instead try and rescue his army from Grizz. In fact, by Side Order, apparently he's just been flying around in his Octobot King without much ill intent, so I think he's dropped the whole thing and accepted peace with the rest of the Octarians.
that also brings up the fact that neither side is truly bad; both are just doing what they need to survive, and the methods just happen to conflict at some points, leading to major conflict and differing views on each side
The reveal that humanity’s aspirations and wishes lives on, passed down to the marine life was a shock. Even in the face of total genocide, in a way, they still fight for the home they destroyed for the next species.

The developers gave the Squid Sisters, Octarians (mainly Turquoise October) and Deep Cut very different music styles and genres. Ah, limbs grow back for Octarians and they reproduce that way. Which makes me think... are all the Splatsville Octarians descendants of Octovius? No, serious question; are they?
@@mrblackjacker32.03 octolings(of which octavio is one) reproduce the "normal" way whereas octarians are spawned from the cut tentacles potentially through an artificial process. I say artificial because a scroll in splat 2 shows us that octavios tentacles specifically are used to impart the great octoweapons with a control mechanism instead of turning them into octarians.
okay but lets consider the lore implications of this. the calmari inkantation has the ability to break someone free and have their own free will, this means since it played in space everyone around the world heard it meaning wouldnt everyone be truly free?
So when I first experienced this fight I'm ashamed to say it surprisingly didn't hype me up as much as Splatoon 1 or 2's final phases with CI. But having time to think about it for a while there's something amazingly poetic about this entire sequence that I just have to share. Remember Sunken Scroll 2 in Alterna? Stating that the Splatlands were almost destroyed by a great flood but the inhabitants were saved by "Three Lights" that "united to consume the disaster." Not only is 3MIX referring to: the 3rd installment, the trio of Deep Cut, the music being a collab between 3 groups, but also 3 'lights' of the Splatoon universe (Inkling, Octoling, and Salmonid) coming together to save their home. Additionally there's poetic irony in Mr. Grizz's (and even moreso for TarTar in Octo Expansion) attempt to try and restore the Earth to its former glory. The very people fighting to stop his plan were brought into existence thanks to the dreams and desires of humans--quite literally the human spirit lives within the thriving world of Splatoon. Each individual member of Deep Cut, the Squid Sisters, and Octavio all having their own styles of music coming together for Calamari Inkantation gives me the vibe of cultures from different corners of the world uniting. Grizz was unknowingly fighting what could be considered humanity's last stand. And had he succeeded, he would have wiped out that thriving world he hoped to rebuild.
Wow. It really hits hard thinking about what you said. That alone makes "Return of the Mammalians" the best Splatoon story mode for me as well as the best version of Calamari Incantation.
I was 100% expecting the final boss to be a possessed DJ Octavio or something lame but what we got was stellar, feels like a great culmination of everything in the trilogy of games.
Never forget that Calamari Inkantation is Lil Buddy’s favorite song, so imagine that he was as pumped as we were that this song was playing for the finale
0:50 "THAT HEAVENLY MELODY!" - A 130 year-old DJ dictator octopus man, who makes sick beats with wasabi and sucks up globs of an odd fur/ ink substance capable of transforming any creature into a mammal, so that a highly intelligent bear doesn't doom all sea life.

The Brazilian community will never stfu about how happy we all get when we hear the samba like percussion and rhythm "HOLY SHIT IT'S CALAMARI INKANTATION" *hears the drums and panderos * "*N E M F U D E N D O*"
*"THE HEAVENLY MELODY"* I SWEAR WHEN DJ OCTAVIO CAME I WAS LIKE "Well here we go, the Octarian finally decides to work with us, TIME TO SHOW GRIZZ HOW WE DO THIS "
The fact that this game literally ended with the phrase "Good and evil put aside their differences to face a greater danger" makes me cry, I don't know why and I LOVE it (personal head canon, the octarians and the rest of species now live in harmony)
I wanna see her sing with Marina. I think the two would sound great together. Really hoping we get everybody together for the DLC. With DJ Octavio, we litterally had everyone jamming out except for Off the Hook.
I just wanna say how god damn impressive it is that no matter how many idols voices there are, Splatoon will always have the idols on the left in your left headphone/speaker, and the idols on the right in your right headphones/speaker. It's such a small detail that some people never even notice, but it's such an amazing detail to see in almost every instance of an idol singing

what would be even COOLER is if the idol splatfest was going to happen, depending on what team you chose, that idol group’s version of calamari inkantation played as part of the splatfest music it’d be really cool to hear OTH sing it or have an isolated version of Deep Cut’s cover
Who would've thought that dropping a hard-ass dubstep beat as well as some of the funkiest chords ever onto a pop song by a bunch of sea creatures would result in one of the biggest bops of all time?
Splatoon 3 was the first game of the series that I played, after I heard the OST and thought "YEAH I want to hear those songs wherever they are". I knew this song existed, but never heard it other than the original Calamari Inkantation. This bursting into my ears during a space 1v2 of a giant business bear against a giant flying salmon and a mech suit with squids 'n octopi was something I never imagined to witness or hype me up the much that I hyped in that moment. Splatoon 3 was inkredible.
I love how you can hear the imperfections in this song, like quick breaths and some vocals being quieter than others. It feels so much more indie than the original, which is perfect!
Octavio decided to collab with Deep Cut and the Squid Sisters, creating a literal superweapon of a song. Whenever you hear this song you know something big is about to go down. Also, Big Man has an amazing singing voice.
In the first 2 games, Calamari Inkantation plays when you fight a very hammy octopus DJ whose biggest crimes are grand larceny and brainwashing. In this game, Calamari Inkantation plays when you fight a completely psychotic (yet also tragic) monster bear who's trying to kill literally everyone on the planet. The stakes may have been raised to an extreme, but this song still works just as well as it did before!
Keep in mind, inklings and octolings don't actually die when they're fuzzified- in fact, they're still alive. *They just lose all traces of sentience.*
This is BY FAR the best rendition of this song. I never really gave a crap about the other inkantations. They just didn’t grab me. This? This is a spectacle
These games tell a story about change, and how one must balance the past, present, and future to truly be happy. Tartar was so obsessed with the sins of the past and his vision of the future that he forgot about the present, and it cost him it all. Mr grizz, despite what he would want you to think, focuses so much on the past and present that he doesnt see the logical fallacy in his future [as shown by the bad ending making the planet unlivable because of how fuzzy ink just straight up starts to break the planet's biology.] Order is so focused on the present and future that he repeats the past, and much like that past, falls to his hubris. Funnily enough, octavio is still balancing all 3, and by this song, hes the closest he has ever been. In fact, if this is the final game, its fair to say that he has finally reached that balance. I dont want a fourth game, let the story end here. Change is inevitable, but thats the beauty of life.
I love this song and this boss fight on so many levels because it really feels like the culmination of the trilogy and builds off of Octo Expansion in a satisfying way. Inklings, Octolings, Salmonids, etc are finally able to put aside their differences even if justice for a moment and fight for their home. Its what sets them apart from the humans and shows that they aren't doomed to follow humanity's mistakes. All 3 of the franchise's villains (Octavio, Tartar, Grizz) wanted to return to the way things were in some way. Mr. Grizz is the culmination of that motive, and ultimately learns that the times have changed, and the only thing left is to move forward. Octo Expansion and Splatoon 3 are truly the end of an arc and its amazing. Am I thinking too hard about a kids game? Probably.
Oh yeah, it's big brain time. As the rocket crashed and the people of Alterna died, liquid crystals fell and polluted the now flooded ruins of Alterna. These liquid crystals carry the hopes and dreams of humanity, essentially. The humans were saddened on how they could never see the sky again, and so the liquid crystals took in those feelings and created a beautiful blue sky. It's what the humans wanted to see, it's where they wanted to go. To the surface. This desire- no- yearn for the surface is what caused marine live to evolve and leave Alterna so quickly. They absorbed the same feelings as humans, and carried those same hopes and dreams as them as well. Now, think for a moment. Do you think all humans were thinking about was the godamn sky? No. They had music, video games, movie, whatever is left of the internet, books, and possibly other future forms of entertainment. ------ In Splatoon 1, you fight DJ Octavio, who has stolen The Great Zapfish and Captain Cuttlefish. During the last phase, the Squid Sisters Callie and Marie hijack the DJ's music, and play Calamari Inkantation instead. This gives Captain Cuttlefish the strength to break free from his restraints, and causes DJ Octavio to start jamming out as well. This battle is a concert, there were many Octolings and Octarians watching. In Splatoon 2, there's new idols, Pearl (Inkling) and Marina (the first non-enemy Octoling). No one knows why or how she got here, but nobody really cares either. During DJ Octavio's second concert, Callie has been brainwashed and it's now up to Agent 4, Marie, and Sheldon to save the day. Once Callie is free of brainwashing, they play Calamari Inkantation again, to a full concert. Octo Expansion: There's a lot revealed about Marina, saying that she was there during DJ Octavio's concert in Splatoon 1. The song Calamari Inkantation is discussed in one of the chat rooms as to have apparently 'changed everything," according to Marina's words. The song resulted in Marina leaving the underground world of Octarian society and go up to the surface. Agent 8, the main protagonist, is heard humming Calamari Inkantation at the beginning of the DLC. Eventually, Agent 8 travels to the surface with tenacity, stopping Commander TarTar from destroying the world. Many Octolings show up on the surface afterwards... ... Does this sound familiar? ------- Calamari Inkantation is known from Calamari County, and is an old folk song passed down from ancient times. It gives all these strange affects and desires to cephalopods (possibly other marine life as well). Though, it's known that the song itself is carved into the very DNA- very likely soul as well- of all evolved marine life. Especially Inklings and Octolings. ...Hmm, I wonder what else is ancient? -------- Calamari Inkantation is the song made by the humans of Alterna 12,000 years ago. The song is about how much they want to return to the surface, and how determined they are to do so. The liquid crystals gave Inklings and Octolings the song, along with the emotions (feelings) that the song held. It's literally in their DNA. Language changes, words are lost, yet the melody is the same. That heavenly melody. ---- You cannot change my mind. I'm fucking right about this.
Every time I hear this it reminds me when I teamed up with the francizes oldest villain to beat the ever-living crap out of a giant bear while a salmon that I own goes super sayen and beats it up as well. Never change this Nintendo.
Even as someone in their mid-30s that’s played a ton of video games, I still got super hyped when Octavio’s ship popped up and this song started playing.
How crazy the ending is. You are a Kid who can transform into a Squid, riding on top of a spaceship built by an Octopus while your best buddy, who is now a Giant Salmon, is fighting a Massive goopy Bear... in Space. YOU'RE FIGHTING A BEAR IN SPACE! I WAS NOT AT ALL PREPARED FOR THIS AND IF ANYONE TOLD ME ANYTHING ABOUT IT BEFORE I EVEN HEARD ABOUT SPLATOON 3, I'D THINK THEY WERE JOKING.
If I hadn't played splatoon and everything I knew was from social media and you told me that the final battle of the game involved the player character going to space assisted by giant eels while ridding a motorcycle shark to stop a mutated grizzly bear that wants to bring the apocalypse to the cephalopod society and you used the power of music that is infused with the indominable human will to make your pet salmon to become a gigantic salmon to fight off the gigant bear while you use a giant octopus's space vacuum cleaner to help stop the bear I would 100% agree that is on brand and it happens.
I love how Octavio’s reasoning for helping us during the fight is just “because fuck this bear and everything he stands for” and it’s just not elaborated on.

Btw I’m pretty sure that’s Frye! Frye sings in a lot of Indian scales/ tones. I found out recently that Indians have a different form of music theory! It’s really dope!
This third game’s story makes me truly think that Octavio was never evil - he just was defending his species.
He's not evil, but still bad.
I mean now that Octavians and inklings live in harmony what’s the point in fighting
I’m pretty sure he found out about that before the big fight
Well yeah that's been the case since day one he just seems evil because you see his actions through the eyes of inklings.
The final battle was an absolute spectacle. Small Fry really became the Son of God

I would agree, but Agent 3, or rather, the new Captain, is def the most badass. Especially with their boss fights in Octo Expansion and them cutting up all the fuzz around the rocket. Tho the new Agent 3 comes close
Agent 8: saves the city
New Agent 3: saves the god dammed earth

@@nessieplodocus482 I want Agent 4 to get some love, man. They're the first Agent I actually played as, and they just don't get enough credit.
They might not have saved the entire world, but they fought off an army to rescue one young lady, and isn't that enough of an achievement by itself?
The developers gave the Squid Sisters, Octarians (mainly Turquoise October) and Deep Cut very different music styles and genres.
And *somehow* they managed to flawlessly merge all of them in order to make the best version of Calamari Inkantation. Makes me wish for an Off the Hook version. Truly, the Nintendo Music Team know their craft very well
I love how DJ Octavio is a concerned dad and a huge fan of the Squid sisters. So happy for him going full circle
We did it boys, we cured both grandpas of their war enduced racism!
And all it cost us was the uh, lives of the entire octarian army...perhaps we have more work to do.
Don't worry, there were enough defectors that left the army that made it safely
the real enemy was capitalism the whole time!
Plus normal octarians are made from ripped off tentacles anyway. They aren’t like Octolings in terms of level of sentience.

Stating that the Splatlands were almost destroyed by a great flood but the inhabitants were saved by "Three Lights" that "united to consume the disaster."
Not only is 3MIX referring to: the 3rd installment, the trio of Deep Cut, the music being a collab between 3 groups, but also 3 'lights' of the Splatoon universe (Inkling, Octoling, and Salmonid) coming together to save their home.

This hits harder knowing about Order's plan now that Side Order is out.
big man’s background vocals are beautiful omg 😭😭😭
I don't even play Splatoon but you will still find me listening to this banger.
This is basically the Drums of Liberation for marine life, and that’s perfect.
when the squid gibberish is the most banger thing you've heard all year??!?!?
Probably.
In most kids games, yes you would be overthinking, but Splatoon? No.

In Splatoon 1, you fight DJ Octavio, who has stolen The Great Zapfish and Captain Cuttlefish.
-------
Calamari Inkantation is known from Calamari County, and is an old folk song passed down from ancient times. It gives all these strange affects and desires to cephalopods (possibly other marine life as well). Though, it's known that the song itself is carved into the very DNA- very likely soul as well- of all evolved marine life. Especially Inklings and Octolings.
...Hmm, I wonder what else is ancient?
--------
Calamari Inkantation is the song made by the humans of Alterna 12,000 years ago. The song is about how much they want to return to the surface, and how determined they are to do so. The liquid crystals gave Inklings and Octolings the song, along with the emotions (feelings) that the song held. It's literally in their DNA. Language changes, words are lost, yet the melody is the same. That heavenly melody.
