2:10 its the basics of sailing, a ship from for example the EIC can only sail in front of the wind or about 60 degrees to the left or right of that course. If you would turn any further your sails would start catching wind on the side you don't want it on and you would most likely start going backwards and get blown of course, you obviously don't want this to happen so thats why they set that sail loose. i am terribly sorry about my english in this explanation, but i don't know the english words for most of the sailing terms. (when your sails start to catch wind from the side you don't want it on.) i have sailed my whole life btw and i know all the terms in dutch, but now in english sorry.
Vin I'm from the U.S. and must say that even with the grammatical errors, I understood you. So you Dutchman really know how to sail? I've seen a few documentaries or so but have never had a conversation about it.

Vin yeah the Dutch actually we’re one of the first along with Sweden in the time of Gustavas Aldophus to have a modern professional army that much of Europe then emulated including France under the sun king. The parliamentary England had a superior navy at the time of the first Anglo Dutch wars but under admiral tromp who was a far superior general at sea to the land generals later appointed to generals at sea not to mention du Ruyter as well. Also English ships were much faster and more maneuverable because the shallow coast of holland required the Dutch to have flat bottomed ships but yeah for a while man the Dutch were the masters of the sea but their geography and the alliances of other great powers around them eventually wore them down. Also Great Britain was lucky in their geography and also in that that most of Dutch commerce and sea routes passed closely to English shores in the channel so they were forced to consolidate most of their naval power to convoy duty rather then bulking them up.
@@ltamez2635 Never thought i'd get pinned in a 5 year old conversation! As TimDutch mentioned, we have some great movies about our admirals. As for your question. The Dutch were actually forced to live on and around water since our countryside is full of marshes and lakes. This resulted in the Dutch becoming well established sailors!
I've been subscribed to this channel for ages and you'd think I'd stop liking this game but every upload he makes of this game I absolutely love it. Keep up the good work.
I'd love to see an episode of this for Fall of the Samurai, especially since first person mode actually does follow one of the crewmen in replays. I've seen a few awesome moments of a dude walking on deck and seeing his crew get blown up by enemy fire, or seeing the captain walking around with his katana out like a badass while stuff blows up around him.
More life of a soldier... I really like that you are mixing it up from just normal commentary over the entire battle with commentary over one soldier or in this case a ship
Great Video as ever Apollo! A couple of points on the commentary - whilst the British Navy was the strongest in the world, the best ships were actually French. The British maintained their superiority through better gunnery skills and seamanship. Also Woolwich is pronounced Wool-itch :-)
1:08, This is my first time watching your channel, and that battle must have been a reverse ending of At Worlds End. Great content, keep up the good work!
The bigger ships of the line, had a kind of a man-sized joystick inside the ship, on second or third battery deck. Not a wheel, Mr. Apollo. Maybe not all, but the swedish 2 liner Wasa, 62-64 guns (1628) and 3 liner Kronan, 120 or more guns (1676) had this Rudder-stick, instead of a wheel. Gave protection to the helmsmen from sharpshooters etc.
Yes, he has played Naval Action already, and has put up videos of it. So, it's kind of strange that he is wanting to create a game that pretty much exists already...
@Tera Byte, naval action's boarding system wasn't so great when i was playing it, i don't know if they changed it (turn by turn system, not seeing any mens on our ships so, on this point it was a little disapointing) x)
Apollo du you know the ship "Wappen von Hamburg", it was a ship that was buil in the 17th century. the ship escorted whaler ships. Once the whaler ship fleed was attact by the prussian fleed, and the Wappen von Hamburg and some other small ships deffended the whaler fleed. and defeeded the prussian fleed.
I named an Essex in Naval Action the HMS Black Prince a while ago, it was an awesome ship! I sunk many overconfident players in it. Outmanuaver, rake with carronades, disable and sink them! :)
Me again, Apollo haha. PLEASE do like a weekly/bi-weekly Life of A Soldier, these are by far your funniest videos and I know many others feel the same!
HMS Montrose is probably the most similar to the HMS Black Prince. She is a type-23 frigate at present. As she is named after James Montrose, a leader of a rebellion attempting to overthrow the crown, she is permitted to fly a black standard (flag) alongside the Royal Navy Ensign. Her name plates are painted in black, instead of the traditional red.
I am just AWFUL at the naval battles in Empire and Napoleon (despite how much I love them finally being included) so at least I have videos like this to watch!
Got to say for age of sail ships that really have a good record, you'd probably have to go for Temeraire (1798), Indefatigable (1784), or just follow the exploits of one Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald.
cool battle but yeah historically during the Napoleonic wars after a few volleys, and no I'm not talking about volleyball XD, like you said apollo they would go in hand to hand and try to capture the ship rather then sink it; like at the battle of the Nile. After the Napoleonic era, though, boarding wasn't as common as ships had much bigger guns, were steamed powered, and torpedoes were starting to be used, all of this was made a lot cheaper with the full swing of the industrial revolution to pump out steamed powered ships, which also didn't require as much training compared to the age of the sail, after the age of the sail wind wasn't as much as key factor.
Lol I do this too, I'll pick a random soldier and pretend it's myself and see what the odds of me surviving is. Actually a lot of the time I don't die lol. Also I usually fire grape shot at swimming soldiers.
The british may have been very good but somewhere around that period the dutch were dominant for example piet heyn or michiel de ruyter they were two of the greatest admirals in the dutch navy around that time
Apollo plz why don't you do an old school medieval 2 siege battle. I mean you started your channel with medieval 2 vanilla. I m your subscriber from the time you were at 30.000 subs and that was the reason that I subscribed: medieval 2 online vanilla so plz if you are reading this try to upload another of your epic medieval 2 sieges Also you are my favorite total war youtuber, keep up the good work
I can understand why you chose to follow the black prince and not the more famous hms victory, because that ship wasn't really used in that fight. The ship you chose had the perfect balance of action and holding back
When you asked why the sails were "flapping around", I am a competitive sailor in real life, so I could tell you. The sails are luffing, which means the vessel is not going anywhere.
Royal Navy would shoot surrendered ships quite often. If there was rough weather or not enough men to crew them they would be used for target practice with all surviving combatants onboard
An idea for a new campaign: Age of Petty kings, a mod for Medievial 2 total war kingdoms. Its in the game of thrones universe, but its before Aegon arrives. We have the gardeners, starks, hightowers, durrandons, arryns, lannisters, Reynes, tarbecks, Daynes, martells, greyirons, Greyjoys, crabbs, Bar emmons, Estermonts, Peakes, Yronwoods, Drylands, the nights watch, redwyne, umber, bolton, dustin, Royce, mudds, blackwoods, Brackens, Mootons and Darklyns (if anyone remember them from the books)
Hey Apollo! If you press "Insert" you can see the battle from the gunner's perspective. :-)

7:22 look at the marine on the stair case glitchen out
I love the fact that the HMS Victory is still in service to this day
You should do more naval battles focusing on one ship. It's more fun to focus on one because you can root for an individual ship.
More life of a soldier... I really like that you are mixing it up from just normal commentary over the entire battle with commentary over one soldier or in this case a ship
Seeing this just makes me want to go and binge watch hornblower or master and commander
keep going strong pixie
Thank you Apollo really needed something to watch on UA-cam trying to sidestep all these Game of Thrones spoilers
Do life of the elve and his friend elve at the siege of dol guldur

Leon Windischhofer No, at 13:35.
Yeah that me rip
13:35
It looks more like a piece of sail if look at it frame by frame.
Those sails would have been furled for battle, and the 98 gun 2nd rate Black Prince is from a Alexander Kent Novel
Nice video Apollo. I actually really like these (mostly) base-game videos. The Darth Mod I like actually, really makes the game more appealing.
Great Video as ever Apollo!
A couple of points on the commentary - whilst the British Navy was the strongest in the world, the best ships were actually French. The British maintained their superiority through better gunnery skills and seamanship. Also Woolwich is pronounced Wool-itch :-)

I wish he would do more of these
For a moment, I thought it was going to be an individual crewman on the ship. A "Life of a Sailor" if you will.
That game that you wanted to create is basically Naval Action ;)
Broad side or age of sail
Yes, he has played Naval Action already, and has put up videos of it. So, it's kind of strange that he is wanting to create a game that pretty much exists already...

at 5:45 on the left of the ship a guy falls off after volley and that is why it went from 277 to 276
I use to do this all the time playing command and conquer, I use to give individual soldiers numbers..it was sweet lol
I named an Essex in Naval Action the HMS Black Prince a while ago, it was an awesome ship! I sunk many overconfident players in it. Outmanuaver, rake with carronades, disable and sink them! :)

More of this please pixie
Mr_Impractical definitely
You should do a cinematic of a battle, almost like a machinima. Maybe do one like life of a soldier. And please use darthmod!
The sails flap when they get hit by a cannonball

That's what I was thinking!!
Pssh, amateurs. Not one of them even thought of bringing a fully upgraded Jackdaw.
I think it would be pretty cool if you could do boarding battles, where your board the enemy's ship and battle it out.
DarKrifteR Stuff You can
That's one of the main tactics used in Total War. Don't you play?
The ship designs in this game are way better than any other game or total war

Part of the Ship, Part of the Crew
A World of Warships type game set in the classical era would be astounding.
I went to HMS worried and HMS victory is so cool I went a week ago.
7:20 LOOK AT THE SOLDIER ON THE LEFT LMAO
Royal Navy would shoot surrendered ships quite often. If there was rough weather or not enough men to crew them they would be used for target practice with all surviving combatants onboard
