  • Rebuilding the Craftsman 4x36 belt sander. I decided to take a subscribers advice and rebuild my belt sander rather than buying a new one. They are not that expensive, but hey, maybe we can fix this one for peanuts, you never know. In this video we tear it down and find out what we need to do to stop the squealing! Please subscribe if you enjoyed the video!

A big thank you Great Plains Craftsman for creating this video! The disassembly was rather simple. It's always nice to know what you're getting into beforehand.
*** For anyone looking for the bearings for the drive roller with the belt pulley on it *** They (both of them) are standard 6001-ZZ bearings (ZZ = shielded on both sides). 12mm ID, 28mm OD, 8mm width
I decided to try 6001-2RS bearings (rubber seals on both sides) to help keep some of the crud out of them, especially on the side opposite the pulley, where the dust collector connects and pretty much will suck crud right through the bearing. My tension pulley was a bit sloppy but I just greased the bushings for now. Will probably be replacing them soon enough. So far so good.
Also worth mentioning, my drive roller was held to the shaft with a double set screw down in the hole... one on top of the other. Had I not read about this possibility, I would likely have beat my drive roller to death trying to get it off since I had already removed the set screw, never thinking there may have been a second set screw down in there below it.

LOL great job, really glad to see you rebuilding it. Now when it is all done and working as it should, if you need a bigger or better sander you can pass on this perfectly fine sander to someone that will put it to great use. Or just keep using it as you did before.

I was thinking you should try to fix it when you said you needed a new one, good to see ya go for it.

We have the exact same belt sander. Howver, we don't have an issue with it, but your title just told us what size of belt we need to get! Thanks!

Try flashing a little heat on the bearings, they should drop off easy, just keep in mind if it doesn't work quickly the heat will move into the shaft and you will have to let it cool before having another attempt

Would have been much more interesting (and helpful) if you had explained more of the "take apart...", but thanks for what information I was able to glean from this.

Where did you find the replacement bushings for the idler pulley and the pulley itself? Having trouble locating online.

I have this sander also - I'm using the motor for another project and don't have the wiring layout for the switch. Would you be able to show how the red, black and white wires are arranged in the switchbox? Thank you!

I have the same sander that needs the front idler arm brass bushings, they are pressed in as well, I looked on Sears website and it looks like you have to buy the hole pulley but unavailable, any suggestions, where did you get yours? Thanks

@@longhornation There is a allen key set screw holding on the disk, the allen key is 1/8". Looking from the top there is a hole in the plastic guard, shine a light into the slot below that hole and rotate the disk until you can see the set screw, loosen it and pry off the disk. It does take some force to remove the disk. I removed my set screw all the way to do it.

@@scotttravis8014 Thank you for answering!! I've spent the better part of a half hour with a flashlight and studying the grainy online parts fiche photo to try to figure it out and I would have spent a lot more time if not for your explanation. That set screw is really buried deep!
