Man, this is THE best video I've found on this! I am a 35 year old woman who has never turned a wrench under my baby's (or any other) hood. I was done waiting for my usual mechanic (my ex) to 'get around to' taking care of her, so I watched this and did it myself! Thank you so so much. I honestly don't know that you could've made it any easier.
Greetings from England and a very grateful limey. My s60r 2004 had just been to a workshop to do an inner front cv boot. They did both as it was stuck in the differential. Driving back Was really slow and low on power. I took matters into my own hands after watching this video. Found 1 Coil pack was faulty. All fixed with 1 new coil pack. Saved me a fortune and I didn't have to blame the workshop he just took £300 off me. Many thanks
Thanks man. I'm trying to do more videos as they come. I don't drive the s60r very much because its simply too expensive to maintain, even if I do the job myself. Plus if I drove it all the time I'd be working on it all the time too.
thanks for the tip about using tubing to get the spark plugs in, that worked well for me. unfortunately I couldn't find the torque specs for the coil pack bolts and broke one off in my engine and now I'm not sure how to get it out or where to get a new bolt.
Tip: Remove cover (over coils/spark plugs) loosen electrical connector clips to coils, start motor, back off connector,(one at a time)listen to engine RPM,if drops,it's firing,if no change, bad plug or coil.Switch around good coil to non-firing cylinder(check to see if firing) can do the same for spark plugs.High mileage vehicles-change all 5 coil packs and plugs(Bosch) NO need to antisieze plug threads(special coating from factory) torque to 22ft.lbs
Ouch!..50 bucks a piece! .. mine now says " time for regular service" then your comment says "you don't drive it to often because of maintenance cost" lol I drive mine everyday..lol... this is going to cost me but I love my r....great video!
Jake, thanks for the comments, i couldn't reply directly so here goes.... please see my PCV video for the removal and cleaning of the TB... yes I have done it, and yes I buggard the harness a bit. There are other videos on the tube on how to clean the TB .... so I didn't go into it in detail, but def in this case a coil was bad. Never hurts to clean things while in there though, so thanks for pointing it out.
I realize this video is 10yrs old. Just wanted to say (if u even still have the car) the oil around the coils on the valve cover is most likely bc the rubber washer/seal on the bottom of the oil cap needs to be replaced. They’re only a couple bucks & recommended to replace it every oil change. But I’ve had the same on my 06R due to this
cool video. how reliable are these cars in general ? I have a 97 Acura Integra with 223K miles and never had a problem but I wanna buy a Volvo but im kinda hesitant given that ive never owned a European car before.
Key Driver, define "never had a problem". Keep in mind, no matter what the brand of car, parts wear out. Rubber on ball joints and control arms etc etc starts deteriorating after 100k. Suspension components start leaking etc etc. Wheel bearings wear out. No matter what brand of vehicle, these things are inevitable. The problem is, that if you don't stay ahead of the problems by replacing worn parts, you are falling behind. If you have a vehicle that is at above 200k, then likely nearly everything needs to be ripped out and replaced in order for the vehicle to keep running reliably. some cars have cheaper parts than others that wear out faster ... my experience w/ Nissan, Toyota, Volvo, ford, Hyundai.... is that everything wears out, some stuff slightly slower than others.
For some reason, why I share this file there is not thumbnail, also the video starts 3 seconds in..... I dunno why, you can rewind it and get those all important 3 seconds a the beginning of the video
Nice video, very instructive... by the way, what is the red book where you look at? It covers the 2.3 T5 model? I have to service mine... thanks Matthew!
You don’t have to remove the strut brace. Just remove the turbo pipe at the V Band at the turbo.. and remove the intercooler end.. get that tube out of the way. Remove the coil covers. Depending on your tune .026-.028 gap for the spark plugs..ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SPARK PLUG GAP! Never just trust it was gapped properly. Torque spark plugs to 22 ftlbs. Place your coil covers back on. I actually have this same engine and if I know that I am going to do something there soon I will leave the 2 torx screws that live under the OTE (OVER THE ENGINE) pipe in a mini ziplock in my glove box.
Haynes manual is what I use...but it technically doesn't cover the r model. firing order is the same though...this engine is common in volvo of recent years.
also...on this job. ..there really isn't a need to reference firing order. plugs and coils are not possible to install out of sequence since there really is no spark plug wire or distributer.
Your not going to like me for saying this but its a ten dollar fix for most. I may be wrong but these cars run with an electronic throttle module. or ETM after driving... in my case 130k miles or so the ETM gums up and doesnt work properly. the etm is located usually on the bottom of the intake manifold. You shouldnt have to take the intake out unless you really want to. disconectthe battery tho otherwise u will end up on your tail end. now there are four bolts arround the modual. kind of a pain to get to but doable. be carefull in unplugging it because you dont want to find out how much that harness costs. now clean up the buterfly flan really really good and put everything together again. let the etm readjust itself. may take up to a day or two. then hopefully problems solved
Key, to more reasonably answer your question, I have never been stranded by the Volvo. If you are looking for reliablility though, the S60R is not for you due to the amount of complexity overall. awd system has its faults, shocks are $400+ each b/c they are computer controlled... turbo ... etc. All of these things add complexity, and your integra doesn't have any of these things. If I was going for something reliable, I'd go for FWD, 4 cyl, non turbo, normal shock setup, 4 wheel discs... basically as simple as possible. My elantra fills that bill. The reason I have my s60r was because I wanted stick shift, relatively sporty, and awd. As it turns out, this is a very tricky combo to find outside of the BMW and Porsche offerings. I hope this better answers your question
That's not too true, Audi, Porsche, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Saab and many others have AWD Turbo complex systems, the only thing that really sets this car apart from others is its an inline 5 but like any car you just need to know what you are doing with these cars
Thanks for the comment. Let me clarify. I was looking for a stick shift as well. Please read my additional comment. If you know an audi that is stick and AWD and turbo please show me. I know porsche and BMW have such availability but I don't have a garage (sacrilege to leave those out in the rain haha), and they are at a different price point. So the only options that I knew of from the time are the mazdaspeed 6? the wrx and the volvo s60r. and the s60r is the most ...uh...family friendly of the bunch.
Matthew Olson Evo although priced high manual+awd, DSM's Cheap and powerful AWD Stick, I thought the older quattros were AWD Stick boosted (dont quote me on it though), Subaru WRX, Legacy 2.5gt, only one in that list thats not really family friendly is a DSM But I get where you are coming from I feel as if in a way I am making it sound like an argument but thats not my intentions. But i do agree these volvos are a bitch to work on especially if you cant handle your tempur haha
Nice!.. Dan said he told me we had almost the same car... but don't remember him saying that. i'm having an issue with mine, getting a code saying there is a misfire in cylinder 5. it's running rough and puttering. and keeps losing power from 0-2,000 RPMs. already changed all the plugs, will try the coils next. is there anything else you can think of that might be causing the problem? perhaps a clogged catalytic convertor or fuel filter?
One of my most popular videos is the fuel filter but that probably is not causing your misfire most likely it's the coil at this point especially with as high of mileage as is on these cars 2004 s60r tends to be a high mileage vehicle so I would So I would Change out all the coils
If you drive this car on a regular basis If you drive this car on a regular basis You will need to be working on something every weekend Otherwise you will be falling behind
Man I need to do this to mine. It shakes when I push the gas more than a 1/3 of the way. Gets real bad the faster I go. At first I thought it was a tire cuz I got new ones put on but nope. Then was looking at my suspension but nope, so it has to be the coil packs. It also smells like gas every now and then and also when I'm idling it will sound like its gonna shut off every three seconds and shake real quick. Crazy
did you do it yet? i got new coils and plugs 2 weeks ago and was going to replace it all (pro-actively)this weekend but we got bad ice/slushy weather. Then i went to drive it sunday and sure enough i get crazy misfiring on cyllinder 5... so now i NEED to do it ASAP
Mathew thanks for posting. I had cylinder 1 and 3 misfire on Monday, after seeing your video I decided to fix it myself. It must be an age issue. My 2004 s60r only had 60,000 miles. I tried ordering from ipd but they were out of stock on the coil as was my local dealer. I found a dealer that sells volvo parts cheap (www.volvopartswebstore.com). I did not remove the strut brace, it made it a little more awkward, but do able. Don't suppose you did a video on changing the timing belt? I'm under the mileage but over the age.
Sorry I didn't reply earlier...no ... I didn't do a timing belt vid.... I didn't do the job myself. I think there are other vids online that'll help you with that. Glad I was able to help some though! Best of luck w/ your car. Gotta just start replacing stuff.... its at that age where if you aren't ahead of the game, you are falling behind.
Matthew Olson Mathew, Would you happened to have noticed if there is an o-ring between the air charge pipe and the turbo? I have a new leaking sound under modest through high boost after changing coils and plugs. Thanks.
John Roldan Assembly error... I took off the two OTE mounting bolts and the flange came with it. I must have missed the flange on the turbo. I put it all back together and it seems fine now.
I have an 05 s60r and every one of these car bleeds and burns oil from everywhere. Just FYI a little grime and oil around the turbo outlet is pretty normal for these things.
What you didn't understand what said? I didn't say their bad but their not as good as the original parts that are specifically made and designed for volvo. That's why genuine volvo are using bosh and not ngk. Hope this time you understood.
ganuv 3rd time, you still didn't say why they aren't as good. "not as good" is an opinion ...I'm asking you to justify your opinion, that's all oh, and just because Volvo uses bosch as oem doesn't necessarily mean they are better than ngk
I do believe this guy is lost. No reason to take off the stabilizer or the top engine mount. You dont need anti sieze on new spark plug threads. The computer said it was the #1 coil, not the plug. The oil in the top of the engine is from the pcv tubing cracked or leaking, not from adding oil to the engine. For sure dont remove the rubber piece from the spark plug socket. The rubber is what grips the spark plug while removing and installing it. If you dont know how tight is to tight for a plug you probably shouldnt be working on a car. You do not need a torque wrench for any of this. Anti sieze you would use on a plug that is re used. He really shouldnt be misleading people on how to work on their cars. This seems to be common here on youtube. I would imagine videos like this are more for the people making them. Pretty much sending others down the wrong road if they follow them. Sorry dude, stick with your day job. We dam sure know its not a factory volvo mechanic.
Yup.... lost because I use antisieze on a plug? Seriously? Lost because I use a torque wrench? The oil was from adding oil to the engine. The rubber piece indeed helps grip the plug but its also a sure fire way to lose a socket when installing a plug. Im gonna pin this comment just cause. Oh...and you can address me directly :)
Well .. Doesn't look like its original volvo plugs or coils .. Which is extremely important on these cars so don't be surprised if you encounter the problem again in a few months. The plugs gap should always be 0.028 to 0.034 on turbo engines.
ganuv Can you please elaborate? I used IPD HD coils and haven't had an issue though I haven't put many miles on them since. The car is currently at the body shop post wreck in December... The NGK plugs come pre gapped, so you aren't supposed to touch them....
IPD HD Are the best you can get for coils. Sparks are fine..they get replaced after heavy/hard driving in these cars at about twice manufacturer rate (source FCP or IPD youtube has it )
beholderlt I think the point I was trying to make is that the spark plugs were indeed fresh 20,000 miles ago as opposed to 20000 miles plugs being still considered brand new plugs
You can use these parts but their not the best for your car. Ngks usually are best for Japanese motors not European cars , if I were you I'd go with volvo bosh coils and original genuine volvo plugs.
The reason I ask the question is that it IS possible to test coils, by moving one coil to a different cylinder and then seeing if the misfire code moves cylinders... spark plugs are testable but IMHO not work the test. If I'm dismantling the engine cover etc, might as well swap it all out...so in this case, it wasn't troublshooting (plural) .... it was troubleshot. :) The "test" I did was to see if throwing new plugs and coils at the problem fixed the problem.... the answer is YES. Call it luck. At the end of the day, I have new plugs and coils....car was due for coils anyway...and I didn't have to take it in to a garage or the dealer....which likely would have been close to $1k for this job.
whether you are a woman or not, you need to see every single step, no question, but please be gentle with your comments. i'm trying to do better but these videos take an enormous amount of time to do, sorry.

THANKS FOR THE VIDOE ITS VERY USEFULL.

You should run a electric comparison voltage test on old vs new , that way if you want to get a salvage part saving money is always a concern
Excellent
Excellent video, I have S60 AWD 2.5T, did you change your own timing belt.
myviews no....timing belt is something I won't touch
Matthew Olson. If you're going to own an R, learn this stuff, it's easy!
Great video, please make more !
Thanks! Will do when I have a project :)

Does copious lube usually help with your performance issues?
well, it helps emotionally .... :)
Good job Matt. Thank you

there will always be oily film on the turbo, it's normal.
Check each cylinder and HCL spark

Using anti-seize on spark plugs can affect their heat range. It shouldn't be used according to my previous shop teachers.

IPD HD Are the best you can get for coils. Sparks are fine..they get replaced after heavy/hard driving in these cars at about twice manufacturer rate (source FCP or IPD youtube has it )
Do you lube everything?...........wait nevermind.
EVERYTHING. ...lol
Brand new spark plugs... 20000 miles ago. That's far from brand new
beholderlt can you please give me a time stamp on the video where I made such a comment and I would be happy to reply
1:40
beholderlt I think the point I was trying to make is that the spark plugs were indeed fresh 20,000 miles ago as opposed to 20000 miles plugs being still considered brand new plugs
beholderlt not for spark plugs. Platinums go for over 100k
You can use these parts but their not the best for your car. Ngks usually are best for Japanese motors not European cars , if I were you I'd go with volvo bosh coils and original genuine volvo plugs.
Again...you didn't elaborate as to why these parts are bad...never had an issue with ngk plugs...ipd HD coils have a good rep too...
its not a troubleshooting its parts changing without any trouble shooting, you didnt do non one test
Thanks for the comment. ..yes...I play parts darts. What testing do you recommend?
