I also like Pontiff's theme very much, along with those of Twin Princes' and Yhorm's. Abyss Watchers' theme is absolutely beautiful, despite being less intense than...well,pretty much every other theme in the game.
Another excellent breakdown. Bloodborne has some amazing tracks and the boss music is designed to match the intensity of the fight. It's interesting how the song is chopped into parts and aspects like the false buildup allow it to loop into itself as the player fights the boss. It isn't a super popular game, but I believe your ears would greatly enjoy Theme of Grandia by composer Noriyuki Iwadare. It's from a game about a young man who sets out on a grand adventure and the theme song matches that feeling perfectly. I'd love to hear you break it down if you get a chance.
I don't know if you're interested in the lore surrounding this game, but I'm reminded of it while listening to this song. Laurence was once a renowned scholar who left his master to establish the Healing Church, an organization dedicated to a miracle substance. This substance was given to the whole city, and was believed to cure all diseases. Only, Laurence wanted more than to cure all diseases, he wanted to raise humanity to godhood. Laurence's main intention was to elevate himself the rest of mankind to the level of gods, and this miracle substance he peddled was actually the blood of the gods. Only, using this godly blood would turn men into beasts, almost like an insult upon mankind. Laurence didn't give up, though. He persevered, and eventually, he found the Embrace rune. By carving this Embrace rune into his brain, he would embrace the sins and the inherent beastly nature of humanity. By embracing it, he would accept it, and use this to ascend to godhood. Laurence would be the first of the deified men, he would lead humanity into a new childhood. Only, it didn't work. Laurence turned into a beast, just like all other humans. He was insulted one last time by the gods, and then, he was slain, and his memory was given to the Hunter's Nightmare. And that's where we find him. Eternally slumbering in the halls of the insitution that he used to pioneer humanity's future. In the halls that he sacrificed everything to build. In the ruins of the town that he created. Only, he is no longer human. He is but a beast, drawn to this place by instinct alone. Once a great hero, now a lowly beast, left to rot in mortality
There's a twist in that,is possible part of this history was made to give in some "status ".In fact he could have turned into an ugly giant beast, slain in the labyrinths and his cranium was used to built the Healing Church.
Good story but there is an incorrect information. His first intention was to evolve humanity, but after the kidnapping of Gherman by Flora, he lost control and accelerated things with the intention of rescuing him. He got reckless, and I ended up the worst beast for it.
@@TraitorsEra Lore wise it makes sense doesn’t it? He was the first cleric- so he is *the* prototype for the cleric beast and all of the clerics to come that end up becoming just like him- like the first boss. People just see him as a reskin because he’s the last Cleric Beast type that we fight. But in reality we’re fighting the first cleric beast lore wise from the beginning of the tale. If you look up the Latin translations of the lyrics to the song, it tells of Laurence’s life and how he became the OG Cleric Beast.
So happy to hear that you enjoyed this more than the theme for Ludwig. I've always championed this theme over Ludwig's theme and it is so nice to hear that others feel the same. It's truly a wonderful piece.
Could you please listen to Coalescence from the Risk of Rain OST? It's the most known song from the OST, specifically because of how it juxtaposes where it's placed, being the final level of a game known for being very chaotic and difficult.
I always comeback to Laurence's theme once in a while as my all time favourite instrument is the organ and it is used so well here. That and the theme tells the entire story of Laurance as a person. He sought great things, he wanted to help but in his own hubris and defiance of his master's teaching set in motion something that ended up in chaos for yharnam and a fate worse than death for hinself until the hunter (player) puts him out of his mysery all the while making a callback to most people's first Bloodborne boss encounter through his theme, the cleric beast. I adore this piece
It would be great if you reacted to Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower's ost, definetly one of my favourites alongside Laurence and Ludwig's theme. Love your videos man, you got a new subscriber.
"the story telling behind the track compositional-wise is that you had the struggle but in the end you died" isn't that exactly what happened to Laurence in the lore? 🤔 it's interesting how you can interpret things from the lore just by listening to the music
The organ and cello part and the "pause" section before it don't even play normally during the game, but the song progresses to that part onwards only after there is an event which I and a lot of the community think wants to hit the player in the feels and make the player feel pity for a character, and that for me adds a lot to the mood of the song. Also, like almost every track in the game the lyrics of the choir are in rough latin and talk about the character of that song, which I find extremely neat. Edit: what you said about the storytelling aspect of this song may (maybe not casually) be applied to the storyline (almost (lol)) of that character
Amazing vid! Love your reaction, this is my favourite videogame theme ever and it was great to see you enjoying it so much. If now you want to be into Laurence's lore without playing the game, Laurence was a student from the university of Byrgenwerth, dedicated to discover "the eldritch truth" and how to ascend humanity into its next step, how to be a Great One. His master, Willem, sustained that, to contact the Great Ones and to try to ascend, you should develop "eyes on the inside" aka gaining insight. Laurence, on the other hand, defended the use of the old, forbbiden blood, the blood of Great Ones found deep into their tombs, because it had amazing healing qualities. This conflict led to Laurence and almost all Byrgenwerth scholars leaving Byrgenwerth, and they founded the Healing Church. The Church quickly gained power and prestige in the city of Yharnam thanks to their blood ministration, which was incredibly addictive. They started to experiment on yharnamites (in brutal ways), giving them special treatments of old blood, searching for a way to interact with Great One and evolve. The old blood started to provoque beastly transformations on people, and such huge scourge led to Laurence deciding to burn the whole Old Yharnam district. At some point, Laurence finally contacted with a Great One, the Moon Presence, but this Great One kidnapped Laurence's best friend, Gerhman the first hunter, into her dimension, the Hunter's Dream. Laurence tried to control the scourge of the beast trying to ascend and help Gerhman, but he failed, becoming the biggest beast ever seen by the Church up to that point, a Cleric Beast, and was killed by Church assasins. Since then, his skull is at the Grand Cathedral, and the Church vicars pray to it in order to remember Willem's adage to Laurence: fear the old blood. But that wasn't the end for Laurence. His consciousnes was traped in the Hunter's Nightmare, and he's there, as a beast, eternally on fire, without memory: that is his punishment for playing with the blood of the Great Ones. That's when we, the player, arrive, fight him (he's incredibly hard btw but totally worth It!), and in his second phase, with the music going all sad and dramatic-epic at the end, his legs explode and he's crawling desperately trying to defend himself. Is very sad, actually. Such a fascinating character.
I want to play the game, but I've been a PC player my whole life. Maybe this console generation is where that changes! I can see somehow there's a lovecraftian thing going on in the game; all this thing about The Great Old Ones. Thanks for the lore! Give Mira a like!
You react a lot to game themes, and as much as I love the suggestions there fro Gehrman, Gael, Artorias... how about some movie themes? "No time for caution" from Intrerstellar or "Death is the road of Awe" from The Fountain are both incredible themes. Also "Lux Aeterna" from Requiem for a Dream. Also, a question out of a field, but where are you from? You kind of remind me of a childhood friend...
This is the first time I have a request for movies OSTs. I think I've drawn some parallels from movies in previous videos though. Regarding my location, I'm from the VOID 🌌

The story of Laurence is one of a man who did everything he could to try help people, he wanted to change the world to do good. But his actions inadvertently led to nothing but suffering for his people. He ended up doing monstrous things in the pursuit of making the world a better place. You encounter Laurence in the what is essentially the afterlife, he has taken the form of a beast on fire. The beast representing his monstrous ignorance, the fire representing the guilt literally consuming him from within like an inferno. As the song moves through distinct movements it always felt to me like a journey through Laurence's guilt and actualisation. Emotions like denial in the beginning, but building with a sense of dread as he can no longer deny what he has done. This moving towards realisation, the song slows down into a drone with the choir slowly building then the strings coming in. Building the sense of dread as everything comes to his mind. The solo viola representing sadness, his first reaction to the realisation. How could everything he tried to do end up turning him into a monster and causing nothing but pain. As it builds towards the crescendo it's like the sorrow is turning to full anguish. He only wanted to do good but in his stupid, arrogant, human ignorance he destroyed everything. Hes nothing more than a stupid, mindless beast.
Great reaction man! Imo this track is even better when watching it with your language subs and even more when you know well the world of Bloodborne so you’re listening with knowledge about all the hidden meanings in the words.(the song it’s in Latin if I’m not mistaken) My suggestion of the next BB reaction is Gherman, the first hunter,my personal favorite of them. I love it not only because it sounds the best for me but also because I got it. Bloodborne’s world is not the easiest to understand, especially the first time playing but the part that is told in Gherman’s theme I got so it gave me the tears it should. The theme has some Latin song in it the meaning of wich I discovered much later, when I knew well what happened but it still made it even more meaning-full,not in terms of knowledge but in terms of attachment. This theme is much more meaningful to me then the three famous notes of Gwin,Lord of Cinder cause BB was my first of this studio and it would be nice to see how you specifically would react to it.keep up man!
I always see this song as reflective of Ludwigs state of mind as he loses himself to the beasthood: At first there's the creeeping dread and depression as he realises what will become of him, then we get an eleagant poetic section as he see's how close he came to transcending, followed by the glorious climax as he is given a glimpse at the great cosmological truth he saught all along, before the final strings indicate his descent into madness and beasthood.
It’s funny watching someone react to these songs for the first time. Songs that I’ve listened to just way too many times. It makes me wish I could hear them again for this first time and have my mind blown again. Fortunately, these songs get better with age. I still adore the Soulsborne soundtracks and always will.
I loved that definition you gave: "In scarcity there is more 'want'" It fits this song perfectly. Storytelling wise, is a crucial element, since the consume of blood in Bloodborne is a horrifying vice that in its scarcity becomes more wanted, as the drinking of the Old blood also makes people descent into madness and monstrosity, in its scarcity It becomes even more sacred. The long release of pressure in this song is just like the state of mind of Laurence, regretfull after spreading the consume of blood to humanity, realising too late of its venom, trying to contain it's spread, but eventually subduing to It... Needing it, desperately... The sacred blood!
This is something that i really await in youtube for quite a long time. Im always thinking that Soulsborne soundtracks had this potential of being a subject of analysis, and here we have a composer taking a good look at the tracks. Good job man
5:58 At this part when the Violin comes in, I feel it's all the more meaningful when you have the context of what the music is accompanying? In Bloodborne, the holier/ greater a character, the more corrupting and horrifying the effects of the bloodborne beast-plague, and in the track you're fighting against a transformed Laurence. The sad yet longing violin part is amazing at just conveying how he's become such an abomination, but he's also still self-aware enough that he's still able to recall his own might and conviction from the memory of who he once was, and is mustering that willpower again to face-off for one final time, despite how horrible a monstrosity he has become.
Please do some Dark Souls 3: Lorian, Elder Prince & Lothric, Younger Prince Abyss Watchers Darkeater Midir Dancer of the Boreal Valley I’d also recommend listening to Cleric Beast, even if it’s just for yourself, and not for the channel. It’s essentially a companion piece to Laurence that go beautifully together and share a lot of the same themes.
I really love these videos. Looking at the music theory and thematic analysis behind videogame and pop music gives a lot more depth to the tracks I enjoy. Your insight is great, hope to see more from you!
Hey Alex, thank you so much mate! I just wanted to say that my videos are not intended to be educational; I just offer a perspective that anybody could have without knowing music theory, which is my case because I didn't go to music school and I'm self-taught, so I had to develop an unorthodox way to 'read' the music if you will
great break down of a stunning track, I also love how during the climax it has a real sadness to it. Mixed in to all the fear and gravitas. Love the track, love your review. :)
I love the way you structure your reactions champ ! Listening through the whole song for the first time and doing a breakdown afterwards, you don't pause a hundred times throughout the song like most other reaction channels do and leave all your indepth thoughts at the end. Major respect to you, keep it up !!
My favourite song from all the game🖤 So much tragedy and you can feel all the wrong that happened in Yharnam, wrongness and corruption hidden behind hope. This song for me is representation of "The way to hell is made of good intentions".
This is one of my favourite tracks of Bloodborne. It's so ominous and that part with violin is just beautiful. I also recommend Gehrman The First Hunter and Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower. They are just awesome.
I would recommend reacting to Cleric Beast. I recall somebody who had never played the game hearing the song and believing it was the theme for the final boss. To which the one who was playing the music replied that it was the music for the FIRST boss. I also recommend "Micolash, Host of the Nightmare". It's a lot more subtle than a lot of the other boss themes from Bloodborne, and befits a boss that is less about contronting another hunter or beast and more about chasing down a madman.
Also, a bit of context on the bosses, since these might help enhance your appreciation for their choices in the composition. The cleric beast breaks a lot of the rules for bosses. There's nothing to indicate that you've entered a boss area until you hear a loud screeching, and then see this enormous, wendigo-like creature leap over a locked gate to attack you. Up until now, you've been facing foes that are mostly mad townsfolk, attack dogs, and a few werewolf-like creatures, and this is also along the most obvious path, so it's likely the first boss you encounter. Micolash, on the other hand, is faced in an area known as the Nightmare of Mensis. Unlike every other boss, which will aggressively engage you or wait until you strike first, Micolash gives you a few cryptic lines, claims he cannot be stopped, then retreats into a maze of mist-filled, maze-like corridors. As a result, you're chasing after him, while he babbles about eyes on brains and the cosmos, and occasionally mocking you by mimicking beast-howls. He also animates puppets to distract you, and can teleport through mirrors to escape.
Not even the first boss of the game at that. It's for an *optional* boss. It's likely the first boss a lot of players encounter but I'd say Father Gascoigne is the true first boss since he's a required fight
Hi Lydia! Thank you so much! I just want to let you know that my videos are not meant to be educational, but just offer a perspective without knowing music theory. I'm self-taught and I had to develop my own way to 'read' the music let's say. But if my breakdowns somehow are helping you get a deeper understanding of the music, that's fantastic!
I love this track SO much because of how hype it makes you feel. It gives you fear, but it also makes you feel powerful and triumphant, as if you are even more powerful than the foe you're confronting. Nice review
I would love to see a video talking about why the organ is such a widely used instrument for foreboding and ominous peices.. I absolutely love the organ in the POTC Davy Jones track
This for me is the most special among all the songs in the game. This to me feels the only soundtrack that's not about the creature you are facing but rather a dance between the hunter and the hunted. Syntethizing the entire expirience, starting super dark and as it progresses it reaches the point in wich you just feel bad for everything. Killing these creatures, all the horror you went through, and simply finishing the game. In a final crying goodbye. Since it's the final fight and in case you don't know, instead of getting stronger it crumbles in the second phase.
Another really good one from Bloodborne that I haven’t seen recommended in this comment section yet is Ebriatas, Daughter of the Cosmos. A very different track from this one and Ludwig but amazing nonetheless.
The music in Bloodborne is designed to make u anxious so u make mistakes in order to overcome those and feel accomplished once you defeat the boss. Orphan of Kos OST is the evidence for this argument IMO.
It doesn't sound like you've played the Bloodborne games or know about the lore, but hearing your analysis of it, it's clear that the creators of the game collaborated closely with the composers, and the composers knew exactly what they were doing. The music in Bloodborne is very clearly made with an intimate understanding of the gravity of each scene it backdrops. Every tragic note, every musical theme and color and lyric is painted meticulously to do justice to the characters they represent. The introduction to Laurence even sounds like condescension to the folly of someone who flew too close to the sun, and the sustained somber note at the end signifies his understated, lonely undoing.
Willem: Yo, Laurence humanity does need to evolve but don't use the old blood to do so! Laurence: K Also Laurence: *Proceeds to use the Old Blood to do so*
*People turning in to beast because of the blood* Willem: heh I told you idiots you need to get insight not blood! *People proceeding to turn in to aliens and going crazy because of it* Willem and Laurence: Oh were f*cked
'The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown' - H.P. Lovecraft. This is the central theme to the entire game of Bloodborne. Not just the beasts, mind you. I don't want to spoil it but it does have to do with Laurance being the First Vicar.
Basically the full theme song of The Healing Church, a continuation of the track we hear during Cleric Beast and Amelia, The First Vicar fights as well.
15:34 "The storytelling behind the track, composition wise, you have this trouble but at the end you died, and that was it" ... That is pretty much Laurence in a Nutshell haha
15:35 yes that's right for the lyrics too. The song exists in two parts like you said. In the first part the lyrics warn you for the influences of the blood, that it can corrupt you. Then in the second part the lyrics suddenly celebrate the blood, singing about a feast. Showing that the singer, representing Laurence, has been corrupted by the blood. This corruption of Laurence by the blood is THE most important part of Bloodborne's story. In fact, it's sorta even shown in the only flashback in the entire game. Here's the latin lyrics (I have them saved in my phone cause I love this song). You'll find the translation in the first youtube search for this song in the comments. Great video man, I will say there is also a lyrical translation video on UA-cam that really gives this song more depth by telling Laurence’s story from his perspective. But all in all you should play the game man! These songs represent the bosses very well and if you understand the boss, the song just meshes together perfectly.
Everyone is saying, Astral Clock, first hunter and slave knight you should listen to next. But I feel like the orphan of kos ost deserves a mention too.

And in the lyrics he’s saying “be afraid” because he wasn’t and look what happened to him
Good story but there is an incorrect information. His first intention was to evolve humanity, but after the kidnapping of Gherman by Flora, he lost control and accelerated things with the intention of rescuing him. He got reckless, and I ended up the worst beast for it.
@Dale Macarena I think it’s latin
Also it's poetic justice that his entire body is on fire like a tortured sinner in the fires of hell for the tragedy he caused.
I'm no composer, but I totally understand his explanation.
This is how great Bloodborne OSTs are.
That's the whole point! 😁
It’s a great track! It owes a lot to the Cleric Beast track, which makes sense, the boss itself is a Cleric Beast 2.0.
The intro for Clreci Beast is just otherworldly
until he doesn't need his legs anymore lmao
Ironically, and arguably so, Lawrence was the OG cleric beast if you look at it from a lore perspective
@@beckyweiss6072 exactly what I was about to say. he's doesn't only look like a cliric beast, he is THE cliric beast
So that's how it actually sounds without the constant screaming, shrieking and blazing lava sounds...? Beautiful
RRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEE
So happy to hear that you enjoyed this more than the theme for Ludwig. I've always championed this theme over Ludwig's theme and it is so nice to hear that others feel the same. It's truly a wonderful piece.

The most underrated ost in Bloodborne
And the most amazing imo
AH DAMNATIS INVENITUS
Thanks mate!
Dark Souls III Soundtrack OST - Lorian, Elder Prince & Lothric, Younger Prince can you react for this Ost ? I will love of seen it breaks down
"the story telling behind the track compositional-wise is that you had the struggle but in the end you died"
isn't that exactly what happened to Laurence in the lore? 🤔
it's interesting how you can interpret things from the lore just by listening to the music
Really!? Wow, that's crazy that I got that
The organ and cello part and the "pause" section before it don't even play normally during the game, but the song progresses to that part onwards only after there is an event which I and a lot of the community think wants to hit the player in the feels and make the player feel pity for a character, and that for me adds a lot to the mood of the song. Also, like almost every track in the game the lyrics of the choir are in rough latin and talk about the character of that song, which I find extremely neat.
Edit: what you said about the storytelling aspect of this song may (maybe not casually) be applied to the storyline (almost (lol)) of that character
I had to look it up on UA-cam to actually hear what it sounds like. All I heard during the boss fight is "gueeeee" or "reeeeee" and "boom".
Did you know that you can also search for the lyrics of the song? the lyrics also talk about the character's history, just one piece of information

Yes!!! Since your first Bloodborne reaction I‘ve been waiting for this!!
No time for caution is an absolute banger.

Yes! This is exactly what I was hoping you'd react to. I love the story telling that is told within the song itself.
Imo this track is even better when watching it with your language subs and even more when you know well the world of Bloodborne so you’re listening with knowledge about all the hidden meanings in the words.(the song it’s in Latin if I’m not mistaken)
My suggestion of the next BB reaction is Gherman, the first hunter,my personal favorite of them.
That literally is one of my favorite tracks of this game. Goosebumps every time when listening..

I love how this is a broadly enlightened/complex/elevated piece with a dominating monster lurking within.
Good job man
My favorite thing about Laurence theme is the lyrics. They're telling us the story of Laurence and the church in an epic way. It's just awesome
You will get goosebumps when Lawrence rips your face the first time....
Please do some Dark Souls 3:
Lorian, Elder Prince & Lothric, Younger Prince
Abyss Watchers
Darkeater Midir
Dancer of the Boreal Valley
I’d also recommend listening to Cleric Beast, even if it’s just for yourself, and not for the channel. It’s essentially a companion piece to Laurence that go beautifully together and share a lot of the same themes.

the piano is amazing

Father Gascoigne. Very underrated yet AWESOME piece, definitely deserves more reactions.
My favourite song from all the game🖤
So much tragedy and you can feel all the wrong that happened in Yharnam, wrongness and corruption hidden behind hope.
I don’t know anything about music but I learn a lot about it from your videos!
I adore this piece in Bloodborne soundtracks. Thanks for reacting to it and dissecting it. Keep up the great work!
At last!
I turned on notifications exclusively for this.
This OST brings sooooo much fear and tension, I played the game and I know it, but even a person who don't play the game feels this
This for me is the most special among all the songs in the game.
If u loved the song, u have to be in the boss fight while listening to this. Is a whole 'nother experience; specially when u defeat Laurence.
I haven't played it, I do all the breakdowns blind
love your videos,man!

Sometimes silence tells a lot more than words 😄
'The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown' - H.P. Lovecraft.
This is the central theme to the entire game of Bloodborne. Not just the beasts, mind you. I don't want to spoil it but it does have to do with Laurance being the First Vicar.
In fact, the later half if bloodbornes main story draws directly from lovecraftian horror, as does the fishing hamlet in the dlc.
The woman choir part for this piece can be heard in the Cleric Beast/Vicar Amelia theme
One of the things I love about this theme is its use of the strings from the Cleric Beast's theme. I love musical callbacks like that.
Basically the full theme song of The Healing Church, a continuation of the track we hear during Cleric Beast and Amelia, The First Vicar fights as well.
15:34 "The storytelling behind the track, composition wise, you have this trouble but at the end you died, and that was it"
... That is pretty much Laurence in a Nutshell haha
😆
A very VERY special request for you: reacts to "Fantasia alla Marcia for piano, chorus and orchestra" from Kingdom Hearts II.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes
Hell yeah
