Karen was an extraordinary woman. I saw the Carpenters in concert on October 16, 1972 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minnesota (I found the exact date at an online database of their performances). I was 15 years old and a drummer since age 10. I was able to watch her play drums from a very close position. On her floor tom (in this video she has two, so she might have had two also when I saw her) she had a stick bag attached to hold several drumsticks. When I got home, I told my mom about it, and she sewed one out of burlap for me. I had this on my drum set and my later set until 1977. When I sold that second set, I gave the stick bag with it. I will always admire Karen’s drumming and love her glorious voice.

My dad loved the Carpenters and played them all the time and I really hated them at the time because he was always putting down the music I liked(which of course was harder rock) but now, as an adult, I can hear just how amazing these two were, and without the ego battle between me and my Dad going on, I can appreciate their music a lot more. Karen's voice is remarkable. No one has ever sang with such tenderness and grace. Yes other female singers are more technical and virtoustic, but her delivery and the way she put a song out there is unmatched to this day.

The amount of enthusiastic reaction and applause after Rainy Days and Mondays, For All we Know, etc. by the British audience is a stunning and powerful acknowledgement of the talent and respect for Karen Carpenter not given to her memory today. This is a sad commentary on what is regarded as talent today. With Karen it was about interpretation and about the song, not about her as in DIVA opera. She played the drums extremely well several times while singing. To know she was only 21 at this taping is just mind boggling. On the internet they list her as a singer - sure - but she was also a percussionist/ jazz musician.

My dear you don't sound weird at all. There is nothing wrong with you expressing your feelings. In fact it makes you sound fantastic because you fell under the spell of the greatest female vocalist that ever lived. This angel was sent to us for only a short while but did she spellbound everyone who heard her voice

@@thomasdonohue1833 Lennon and McCartney were two of the best composers in music history, you have NO idea what you are talking about. They wrote about 150 great songs, and were very innovative. Their songs are copied by far more than anyone in history. Even the Carpenters did Beatle songs. And yes, George Martin was brilliant and influential, he was the true Fifth Beatle. By the way, I love Karen, but her solo album when she left Richard for a bit was pathetic.
