Excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed the video. My wife was an equestrian when she was younger (and a farm girl), and she has explained horseshoeing to me. I've never seen it done, so this was a real treat!
I'm just about to start my apprenticeship and it's definitely an art form this carrier. You look at the guys and girls who have been doing this for many many years and they make it look effortless like your self. Even though it may not be effortless, but it's all technique isn't it. But something as "simple" as using the buffer to cut the clenches to take the shoe off, will take me about 2-4 minutes per shoe. That's just cutting the clenches. Given I only have 5 days experience hahah. But it really shoes me the level of skill and precision required in this. I can't wait to really get started in my training, especially has we make all our own shoes and tools, that's exciting, to get into the forge and learn everything there too.
I was wondering about the old nail holes, my guess is they grow out with the hoof over time but wouldn't they weaken the hoof or get dirt and pebbles stuck in them? Thank you for the video Gary it's always nice to watch and learn.
That as really interesting I have never seen a horse/pony having new shoes fitted. Lots involved and you explained it really well. Must be murder on your back.
After watching one of your other videos on shoeing you seem to be averaging about 7 and 1/2 mins for each foot, that's pretty quick considering you are videoing it and you are still suffering with your wrist. You seem to know what you are looking for when you re-shoe, do you still come across things you have not seen before?
do you fill in the holes that were there from the old set of shoes or do they eventually grow out? i've never watched my horse get his shoes done so i wouldn't know. i might sound dumb sorry haha.
talking about metal chips flying of I had one fly up my nose and it bled all day long liked to never got it to stop. made a believer out of me to make sour to get the burse or mushroom ends ground off and dressed up be for using . besides they hurt when than hit you.
Im a begginer smith, and i really apritiate these kind of videos, ofcouse im not gong to attempt this after just waching it once but its still pretty imforming, (in fact i dont think im ever gonna try shoeing a horse its just too risky for me ,one wrong move culd injure the animal) but it is still interesting to look. Thanks man.
I wanted to become a farrier but I had a lot of back issues so I went to the doc and got told I had scoliosis...No becoming a farrier for me, unfotunately. :(
Gary, how's your arm doing? You're Pro at this by the way, I've watched other farrier's on youtube and i have no clue why people keep paying them. and i asked about your arm before you mentioned it in the video. lol
i hope it gets figured out so you can get back to peak form. keep up the good work. i've watched many of your video's several times. i'm starting to learn and try my hand in smithing on my off time from work as i've wanted to for quite awhile. thanks for all the great content on your channel.
There are guys that have been shoeing for years and still haven't mastered it its all on who you are if its you're niche than its a bit easier to pick up
I surprised you dont seal the nail holes, I dont do it for a living but we shoe our horses the seal the nail holes keep the muck out, had our Appaloosa get a bad infection in the nail from something getting in there so ever since we seal them lol we call it their nail polish
Raquel Bauman you don't need to be sorry, I just think you are wasting your time! The reason you get infections is that you don't know what you are doing and causing it yourself!
Dang, yes owner call, but I would have reset those shoes (didn't have much wear) I like that highly portable anvil, did you make it? From time to time I have people asking me to shoe their horse, but I don't want to pack my large anvil, so I'm looking for a more portable one.
Hi, I'm not sure if he made his or purchased it, but we had a couple of these at horse shoeing school for people to try out. You can purchase them online and they are normally between $125-300 USD from what I saw when I was shopping. They are called Stall Jacks. I have seen some people who had homemade ones as well though.
+Joshua Alvarado I guess you are talking about hot shoeing, it's just a different method of doing the same job. You can hot shoe without having a workshop, you can just work out of the van.
Gary Huston i dont own horses nor do anything with horses but ive grown fond of your videos and also i would love to know what happened to your hand and i hope it gets better
Oreo the apllosa No it doesn't hurt they can only fell the fog and that and the brown ish white thang that's like a triangle that's what thay can fell that can't fell noting alas

PsychoSavage88 huh
THIS IS SOOOO SATISFYING
Ikr this should be the 'Try not to get satisfied' Challenge lol
I seriously recommend watching this upside down its so much better
You are so right! It looks so much better!
actually as a farrier you are used to this angle
Excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed the video. My wife was an equestrian when she was younger (and a farm girl), and she has explained horseshoeing to me. I've never seen it done, so this was a real treat!
Thank you for talking us through! You make horse shoeing interesting, mesmerizing and informative! 🐴❤️
Your vids rock. My hobby is woodworking, and I enjoy metal working, but you have opened my eyes to new knowledge. Thanks.
I don't nor have I ever owned a horse, but I love these videos so much.
You can watch this upside down
Mario figueroa woah it's like better upside-down
Mario Figueroa god damn it
I love your horse showing videos, they’re so calming, I hope you’ll make more!!😄

what a nice docile horse. you must really love it when you get to work with him
Gary if it hasn't been taken care of already have you considered seeing a chiropractor for your left arm? sounds like it might help you.
I visit the chiropractor regularly.
I was wondering about the old nail holes, my guess is they grow out with the hoof over time but wouldn't they weaken the hoof or get dirt and pebbles stuck in them?
Thank you for the video Gary it's always nice to watch and learn.
Yes, absolutely right. They do grow out but can also cause problems if they don't grow out quick enough..
That as really interesting I have never seen a horse/pony having new shoes fitted. Lots involved and you explained it really well. Must be murder on your back.
very interesting to see you working what a wonderful job to have.
Amazing. !!! Thanks for sharing your nice work. !!!!
Fascinating.
I find this so satisfying
I enjoy your commentary. Thank you. You have a real love for your job. Where abouts in the UK do you hail?
Buckinghamshire
These videos are really good! Looking to do farriery -have you got any advice etc... Thanks
Find a good master, that will set you on a good path. Study hard, and finally, look forward to years of hard work!
+garyhuston thank you!
Fantastic video as always..

You seem to know what you are looking for when you re-shoe, do you still come across things you have not seen before?
Occasionally, but after about 37 years I've seen most things!
do you fill in the holes that were there from the old set of shoes or do they eventually grow out? i've never watched my horse get his shoes done so i wouldn't know. i might sound dumb sorry haha.
Lily Hudgins you don’t fill the holes because that’s a good way to get it’s hoof infected

Nice Guess you need to begin* to appreciate* the 4th grade and go back and learn how to spell.
A very placid pony!
Is 6 weeks the average time between shoeing's? Great narrative! Thanks Gary! O,,,
Yes, six weeks is average but can be as little as five or as long as nine!
+garyhuston Thanks I really thought it would be longer than that,,, but I knew nothing at all on the subject until today! O,,,
So good
Do the horses get to know you. Like if you work on a horse for the first time do that act differently then say the 20th time?
All the best,
Jay
+Jay Dighsx Yes absolutely..
I wanted to become a farrier but I had a lot of back issues so I went to the doc and got told I had scoliosis...No becoming a farrier for me, unfotunately. :(
Law, that's too bad, although I too have back problems which I didn't know about when I started the job. I have spondylolisthesis!
Gary, how's your arm doing? You're Pro at this by the way, I've watched other farrier's on youtube and i have no clue why people keep paying them. and i asked about your arm before you mentioned it in the video. lol
+Matt Phenom Not good, spending more time back at the hospital tyring to sort it out...
i hope it gets figured out so you can get back to peak form. keep up the good work. i've watched many of your video's several times. i'm starting to learn and try my hand in smithing on my off time from work as i've wanted to for quite awhile. thanks for all the great content on your channel.
What I know about horses you could write on the back of a stamp. It looks pretty complicated. How long does it take to learn the trade?
There are guys that have been shoeing for years and still haven't mastered it its all on who you are if its you're niche than its a bit easier to pick up
I surprised you dont seal the nail holes, I dont do it for a living but we shoe our horses the seal the nail holes keep the muck out, had our Appaloosa get a bad infection in the nail from something getting in there so ever since we seal them lol we call it their nail polish
Raquel Bauman idiots!
sorry?
Raquel Bauman you don't need to be sorry, I just think you are wasting your time! The reason you get infections is that you don't know what you are doing and causing it yourself!
Raquel Bauman that escalated quickly...
I have never had that problem. I feel like when you seal it is what caused it
I've always wondered this, do the nails hurt the horse or no?
No, of course they don't, provided it is done correctly.
I’ve gotten to the point where I can watch it upside down.
What is wrong with your left hand?
+keltoi3000 carpal tunnel op gone wrong..
Pornhub had a sale
You had a new truck Gary??
You obviously haven't been keeping up with my videos!
Interesting... Can you shoe your own stock if you aren't a Farrier?
You can but its not encouraged!
+garyhuston It was very common to shoe your own animals in the pioneer era here in western Canada. My Grandfather did his into the 1930s.
Nice job...
Good video
Gary Hoofston
Say you got a new horse your going to shoe it will it be this calm?
Well that depends on many things. Is it young, has it been done before, if not has it been well handled and trained.
+garyhuston hmm that good to know
Gary Huston What did you do to your hand? From what you've sort of described it sounds like nerve damage?
Dang, yes owner call, but I would have reset those shoes (didn't have much wear) I like that highly portable anvil, did you make it? From time to time I have people asking me to shoe their horse, but I don't want to pack my large anvil, so I'm looking for a more portable one.

Does this hurt the horse?
no
Does it hurt the horse ???
No Riley, if done properly by qualified farriers, it doesn't hurt.
Its like a pedicure for them.
What is your rasp of choices has nice finish
Heller Legend
why do they put the horse shoe on the hoof when it's Chery red
+Joshua Alvarado I guess you are talking about hot shoeing, it's just a different method of doing the same job. You can hot shoe without having a workshop, you can just work out of the van.
Doesn't it hurt them?
I don't think he would be standing quietly and calmly on his own if it did!
how many horses do you have?
None!
How much do you get paid doin' this??
at present the standard rate is roughly £70 a set with out any extras.
Cold now you feel bad charging that extra 20bucks, ole well.
can you make a shoe from scratch?? do you buy yours premaid?
Both, I was brought up making all my own but now use mainly machine mades..
+garyhuston I've just never seen one made from the beginning by hand.
+225rc watch the videos ua-cam.com/play/PL-t-SRc_IGRGDotAVwWu0y_Lw2mxr3IFU.html
Yes you can make a shoe from scratch or buy pre maid
Do 2 video
don't those hurt the horse?
Do you think it would stand still if it did?
Gary Huston i dont own horses nor do anything with horses but ive grown fond of your videos and also i would love to know what happened to your hand and i hope it gets better
Oreo the Appaloosa no
Oreo the apllosa No it doesn't hurt they can only fell the fog and that and the brown ish white thang that's like a triangle that's what thay can fell that can't fell noting alas
Oreo the Appaloosa it doesnt hurt them. Its like getting a pedicure for humans.
That horse has pretty little feet, I mean, hooves.
I used to ride a horse
I took lessons and I had to groom the horse
I'm new to this so i don't know 😛
Soy tu disipulo
