Thank you for showing my first published novel, 'This Savage Cold Star', Mike😊 Much appreciated! And you're absolutely correct; purple is indeed a theme here, at least in so far as the cover art is concerned😄😊
@@onlycereal Hi Oliver, thank you for the interest!😊 well, the genre is 'magical realism', or at least contemporary fiction with some magical/supernatural elements weaved into it😃 Bear in mind that I am a psychologist by trade, so my work has also been a great inspiration for me in terms of the themes, I like to write about😊 A lot of the people I have worked with over the years all dealt with the pressures of modern life in one way or another, so over the years I became interested in delving into those themes in a fictional way 😃 I hope that answers your question! 😊
It's just so damn pleasing to open a new book with a beautiful cover. Can't help but make those impulse purchases sometimes. Btw, Mike, I'd really like you to check out Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and Solaris by Stanislaw Lem. Both are great pieces of sci-fi literature imo and I think you'll enjoy them too.
Essex Dogs and Wolves of Winter are so good! Abercrombie-level bleak and grim historical fiction with great character work. Jones really brings siege warfare to life in a similar way Band of Brothers did for WW2
That box for Blood of the Lion is gorgeous!! I think that was one of Covers with Cassidy's SPFBO9 semi-finalist picks, so that sounds promising! And aaah that House Atreides flag is amazing, enjoy wearing it as a cape 🤣
Essex Dogs by Dan Jones is a really great book. It's his fiction debut I belive . He is a historian and has published lots of non fiction so you know that book is historically accurate 🤣 It's set during the 100 years war, I think you would really like it !
Cool to see you got some Kathleen O Neal Gear novels! I’ve only read People of The Wolf, an Ice age themed novel she wrote with her husband W Michael Gear. Long Ride Home by W Michael Gear is one of my favorite western novels. Both of their writing styles are gorgeous! My aunt got the chance to workshop with them while she was in her MFA program back in the day.
Very cool! If you like sci-fi, in particular space operas, I recommend both her solo works at her husband’s own solo works. Her Light trilogy is on the same level as Dune for me, both in writing and world building. I have most their books in the Peoples series, have yet to dive in though. Cheers man! 🍻
Winter World by A G Riddle is in my Tbr. I read another book of his I think it was called lost in time That was a decent little sci-fi thriller Nothing too deep But I like the way it flows so Looking forward to reading more from him
I haven't read the sequel yet, but if you were looking for some more historical fiction, I do think Essex Dogs might be one you'd enjoy! Gritty, fast-paced and an interesting take on some (fairly!) well-known historical characters!
Hearing really good things about Essex Dogs and the sequel. The synopsis gives me historical fiction Joe Abercrombie vibes. Also cool that the author writes some history books.
Sebastien de Castell also released a prelude novel this last December to his new Court of Shadows series, titled "Crucible of Chaos". Definitely check it out.
I loved everything about Empire of the Damned except for the lesser quality of the American hardcover which is ~1/2 the thickness of its predecessor despite being nearly the same number of pages. I know paper isn't cheap but I don't think most people who purchase or collect hardcovers are interested in pages that are almost as thin as newspaper. On the flip side, the latest installment to the Sun Eater series is *impressively* consistent with the rest of the series despite a publisher change. Take a bow Team Ruocchio, job well done!
Mark Greaney has written or co-written books in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan universe in addition to his own original work. I enjoyed his Ryan books I read, as well as the first Gray Man book (the one you have is book 13, but maybe can be read out of order?).
To the hi Mike, this is a little off subject of what you’re talking to today. I’m sort of a new subscriber, but I really do like your channel. You had suggest it in one of your earlier things to read the probably for the bath the twisted ones and I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am legally blind, so I have a hard time seeing these things and I have to get them off my computer, but wow, do I like this book? That’s why I’m saying this OK you go back to your stuff and I’m gonna listen very closely. Thank you.
Just received my Library Copy of «Empire of Silence»: Just short of halfway in, and I already have 3-4 pages of notes on references made by Ruocchio!😆 For example, the star system of Gododdin takes its name from «Y Gododdin», a Welsh Poem about the Heroes of the «Old North» Brythonic Kingdom of Gododdin lost to the invading Anglo-Saxons, the Colosseum in Meidua «The Dome of Bright Carvings» appear to reference both the Bright Carvers from Mervyn Peake’s «Gormenghast» & «Bright Weavings» (Guy Gavriel Kay’s webpage) and while «Xenobite» literally is just Greek for something akin to «Foreign Lifeform», I just can not help but think that it have also become future slang for «scary alien», born from a cultural memory fusion of the Cenobites from the «Hellraiser» Franchise & the Xenomorphs from the «Alien» Franchise! 😆
The Gray Man series is pretty good. The author, Mark Greaney, is one of the authors that has taken over the Jack Ryan series after Tom Clancy passed away
Sadly my copy of Disquiet Gods came damaged and I've had to order it four times now and return it to my store each time. Here's hoping number four is the one that sticks.
The paperback version of Metro 2033 has bigger print and fills the whole pages. Also, it is a little bit different than the game. But it is really good though.
I broke the piggy bank. I panicked because of this. Last month I bought The Lion by Nelson DeMille, The Bear and the Dragon by Tom Clancy, The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje, Iron Gold by Pierce Brown, Empire of the Damned by Jay Kritoff, The Wife Between Us by Greer Henricks and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.
the US edition of empire of the damned is the one that has super thin pages. the page count is almost the exact same as empire of the vampire, but its about half the size, and you can definitely see through them. when i first got it i thought the book was way shorter than the previous, but nope, just wafer think pages. super disappointing.
My schedule is way too nuts to offer to review anyone's book right now. This is why I do the Book Haul presentation of books sent to me because I can't promise I'll ever get to them.

The suneater hardbacks are rare as rocking horse shit over here 🇬🇧 , i will be jumping into the Broken Binding editions for sure.
Rare as rocking horse shit will be entering my arsenal going forward.
Yes I will be using that
Well I came here to say that I just added a new saying to my everyday life but it appears I’m not alone 😂
For sure! Can’t find them for love nor money!
Not only in the UK, but the US as well, especially books one, two, and four.
Thank you for showing my first published novel, 'This Savage Cold Star', Mike😊 Much appreciated! And you're absolutely correct; purple is indeed a theme here, at least in so far as the cover art is concerned😄😊
Really love the title! What genre and vibe is it? I'm thinking of picking it up off amazon :)

Thank you for showing The Awakening, Mike, I appreciate what you do for new authors!
Thank you for showing my novel New Haven! Really appreciate it!
Thanks for showing Amara’s Story!
Essex Dogs and Wolves of Winter are so good. Gritty historical fiction that was written by an actual historian.
Good to know. I love his history books.
Completely agree. ED was brilliant and I'm going to read WOW later this month.
I’m glad these came in Mike! Pronunciation was on point :)

So glad to see the Hanged God trilogy featured (Slaughtered Gods). I’m halfway through the second book in the trilogy right now, and I’m loving it.
Essex Dogs and Wolves of Winter are so good! Abercrombie-level bleak and grim historical fiction with great character work. Jones really brings siege warfare to life in a similar way Band of Brothers did for WW2
I just placed my order for a hardback copy of Disquiet Gods I'm so excited to jump back into that world!

Daniel Greene did a video of reading first chapters of three books to decide what to read next and he read Mushroom Blues. It sounded intriguing.
I haven't read the sequel yet, but if you were looking for some more historical fiction, I do think Essex Dogs might be one you'd enjoy! Gritty, fast-paced and an interesting take on some (fairly!) well-known historical characters!

Wow you got sent Dan Jones books 😮 he is a huge author of historical texts. Essex Dogs was a best seller over here in the UK.
I think you will like the Hanged God trilogy. I read the first book, very reminiscent of Faithful and the Fallen, but with vikings.
Play of Shadows is so good. You have to pick up the prelude too Crucible of Chaos.
Great haul!
The Gray Man movie on Netflix is awesome. I have watched it about twenty times. The books are even better.
Finally started The Rage of Dragons and I'm loving it.
Dan Jones is a pretty big-time name in historical fiction. Those two books he sent on my short buy-list right now.
The blood of the lion and slaughter god series are in my Amazon cart to buy. Thanks!

There are a million more references and Easter eggs in the rest of the series!

That is an awesome haul my brother
Love the GnR shirt! Have you read Slash or Duff's books?
I just got the Dan Jones books. I hear it’s great historical fiction. Got the recommend from the Gwynne Bros. Channel.
Like book haul videos!! 🎉

Would love you to have Jay Kristoff on the channel again.
I got the barnes an noble version of EOD and pages are definitely thin... its still good tho... not as nice as yours tho but can't complain
I love books
That Dwayne Adams book is fascinating, it reminds me of Dictionary of the Khazars. Will have to check it out.
I think you will like Essex dogs

Illegal amount 😊
It's the U.S. hardcovers of EoTD that have the super thin pages. I can see the print of the next page through the page I'm currently reading.
Yeah it's freaking terrible. If the first book had the same paper I'd be fine with it but book 1 has very good paper.
That blows.
Thank you for noting this. I was thinking about getting them but will avoid now that I know about the cheap paper.
@@mikesbookreviews yeah super annoying. Well you have the American addition now, give it a quick glance lol. It's high school toilet paper quality.
