What a wonderful surprise! Thanks for all the information concerning Low Tone Harmonicas, you answered the few questions I had about them plus you played a couple of great tunes which I can practice/learn by ear on my growing collection of Low A, LD, LEb, LG, LF, LC, LBb, LLE by Seydel but the first one 2 reeds broke the second time I played the Harmonica! And they talk about how all the Reeds are Steel so they're stronger than brass Reeds that other Harmonica Companies use so our Steel Reed Harmonicas will last for years. Not quite true as I returned broken Seydel LLE got a new one played it very gently as they say this Harp should be played but once again second time I played it, a reed broke off AGAIN! The thing is that that Seydel
1847 Low Tone Classic Bold Body LLE Harmonica sounds so beautiful but because they are "the lowest tone of a Harmonica made in the world, besides the Bass Harmonicas..." this is what Seydel says, unfortunately I now have 2
broken Harmonicas by them which will cost a fortune to fix I found out. Don't think they know how to properly make a LLE actually. Anyway Thanks for the video on Low Tone Harmonicas Jason, I learned some new things and Eleni is my real name by the way just so you know. It's Greek~💡🎶🎙💥🐈‍⬛🌠🔥🤙🏽♥️

I don’t get somebody not wanting to play the regular harps of certain keys (D,Eb,F, etc.). To me there are situations where each of them are necessary and fit better.
And yes gear doesn’t make the player better BUT when you are playing great sounding gear it inspires you and sometimes you will play things you wouldnt normally play

I've enjoyed for years using low Eb's and Low F's mainly for doing jump blues horn stuff and when working with a horn section, they tend to blend in better. In some of the ultra low tunings, you can play closer to how a baritone sax works.

I got my first low tuned harmonica around my birthday: a Kongsheng Solist in Low F. I absolutely loved how beautiful it looked and how resonant it sounded. It can also be a wailing machine too with how powerful the 45 draw double stop sounds. My biggest disadvantage with that key is that I can't bend all that well on it and I fully admit that it's my mouth's fault. I have a small mouth and when I pull my tongue back far enough for the 2 draw full step and the 1 draw bend on a Low F, I almost completely choke. I'm not blaming the harmonica for this, it is entirely my fault. Also, it doesn't growl all that well. The 2 draw and 4 draw growls sound fine, but it's the 3 draw growl (which is a very iconic Terry McMillan lick within itself) that doesn't ring out like the other keys do.
If you know me very well, I like to play a lot of the higher pitched harps Eb-F# and I even have a High G because of how they cut through during a mix. I also listened to a lot of high keys whenever Terry McMillan played harp on the radio so that played a factor into it as well, lol. My personal favorite harmonica key is the key of B, but my second favorite is Db (it's more in the upper middle range of the 12 harp keys, but it is short slotted and higher than C). I always loved my tone always rung out in that key and ever since I heard Terry McMillan play a very bluesy outro during a version of "Amazing Grace" that he did live on TV, I've grown to love that key very much.

For me the best part about low-tuned harmonicas is the great exercise they give my lungs... great way to warm up !
Years ago I bought a Low F, Low D, Low E, and Low Eb Special 20s with Turbo covers... they all still play and sound great !
When Seydel 1847 harps became available, I bought several other keys... the low Turbofied Special 20s are still my favorites !

When I work on my technique I cycle through a different key each day and after 12 days I start over again. And just last night I was working on the low G. I have a low F but usually don't work technique on it and have only used it in performances to add a comping "chuck chuck" sound and the long chords like Jason was demonstrating. I find the low keys are like maneuvering a battleship. A lot work and I'm not sure much payoff. I will start thinking of using the upper notes on the low keys though, thanks Jason.

MoonCat ! This was just being discussed on the Pedal board page . A guy said he needed a technique besides pedals to cut through the mix less on pads and vamping. I told him just to back off his mic first but then I told him to maybe get some low tuned harps and switch off. Maybe Hohner should make some harps where you would press in a button like a chromatic and get a low tuned harp. Brendan Powers prob. has something like that already. Great lesson Jason !! Great choice of topic Jason as there haven’t been that many on this topic except for Ronnie Shellist. He can make them growl and moan. I’m a fan of Hohner Thunderbirds, have most with the exception Bb and E so love the resonant sound pref through a mic as they are not as loud. I have found there’s an elephant in the room though for those contemplating buying one. They are simply harder to play so be prepared. Low Hohner Rockets don’t have the Filisko designed conical covers but are cheaper to purchase. Maybe start with Low F. Buyers beware.

    • @norfolknwhey4787
      @norfolknwhey4787 8 місяців тому

After playing a bunch of thunderbirds, the bottom coverplate isn’t really necessary unless you’re playing too hard. I really think it was just another example of Filisko putting his name on something for notoriety. Similar to how he claimed some customizing techniques as his own (Slot Embossing), when they were verifiably created by Rick Epping.

If i‘d get the key that i play most on standard harps (bb, a, g), i‘m afraid it probably would be too low to bend. Agree Jason. I used LOW F on my song Down at the Thunderbird which is a Jazzy Bluesey Song with Stand-up Bass and nice sinewy number allows for some longer growl comp and upwards fast effect upper octave solo. Good Stuff! BRO!

Many folks do not like the higher key harps due to poor technique. They sound shrill and sour when played with poor embouchure and breath control. What they don’t realize, is the high key harps cut through the mix SO much better, and are really useful in band situations. Nothing worse that rocking out a sweet 12-bars, only to be lost in the mix due to the low harp.

What lowest key you can bend 1 draw? LowEb is lowest for me. LowD is not perfect

Can you explain what the mechanical difference is between a low harp vs regular harp of the same key? Can one modifiy a D harp to create a low D harp?

The reeds are longer, and have more weight attached to the tips. You cannot make a low D from a D harp, the reeds are not the right length, and the slots are short. To make a low D, you’d want to start with as low a long-slot harp as you can, and use lead-free solder to add reed weights.
