I been here twice, it was the first thing i did when i got to the UK, i visited it again last year, it has been redone with a new entrance and visitor center/gift shop. You now must be taken to the circle by a bus. I think it's a better way to preserve the site. It is amazing seeing in person. I hope i can go back and actually get inside the circle. I feel a great connection with this site. I love it.................

Visiting Stonehenge was on my bucket list. Got to do both last June. Stonehenge was a bust--you can't get close to the stones and there's not even any kind of "vibe" coming from it. Nothing but a tourist trap now. Very disappointing.

Here's my theory about the trilithons and archaeo- astronomy. What if the ancient priest astronomers built the trilithons so that they could stand on them as elevated observational platforms? All you need are basic ladders to get up there.
Has anyone considered this as a possibility? What could you see from the top of the trilithons? What alignments are possible across Salisbury Plain and Wiltshire from up there?

I was there in 1976, when you could still walk around among the stones. I have touched them, for what it's worth. When she said "graffiti" my eyes lit up, but it wasn't the one I hoped. On one stone, carved into the rock, there is a sword and the number 20 ("XX"); etched there by an idle Roman soldier from the XX Legion. Graffiti no less than "Kilroy was here" (for those who know the reference).

Funny how the idea of Stonehenge having a "Sacrificial Stone" was started in 1776. I'm guessing Stonehenge had a few uses besides as a calendar since graves were spotted near it, however, it was probably a burial site and not a sacrificial alter! It's sad how people were vandalizing things they found thousands of years ago... but it sounds about right.

    1. It's not most famous
    2. Its not an ancient monument but a modern interpretation of how the site might of looked.
..The original site looked nothing like it and was taken away to clear the ground for an engineering project, afterwards all stones collected at and around the site were reassembled in most visually pleasing way.

The only thing "mysterious" about Stonehenge is people's belief in it's importance.. what if some farmer started to build the structure of a new house, went off to fight in a war or crusade or maybe an enemy nation invaded but either way he was killed & never returned to finish the build... His heartbroken intended along with his family left the stones in place as a memorial to him?🤷🏼‍♀️
The idea that there's no documentation, record's or any mention of it in any local historical records itself is enough to make me think it had no importance at the time & it's just make believe, storytelling & some kind of prank that's caught everyone over the years.... People go daft over it 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

This question is for "English Heritage" directly...no ignorant or arrogant internet troll comments...English Heritage: what right do you have in having any sort of control over stonehenge..or any historical marks in Wales? Shouldn't the name be Welsh Heritage instead of English? England should be in control of their OWN country's historical places, but leave the Welsh to deal with their own country's historical places. Think England has done enough by placing an English idiot as the "Prince of Wales" even though he is not Welsh. English Heritage should be based on the ENGLISH heritage..Welsh heritage in the country of Wales.
