I absolutely love Bo Burnham, and this and Right Brain, Left Brain are my favorites! "IT'S A F*CKING SCARECROW AGAIN!" has become one of my favorite quotes.
Growing up listening to country for 40 years this is spot on. The crap on the radio today is not country. It’s teen pop and these guys have never been on a tractor, went hunting, or shot a gun their whole life.
It reminds me of Jason Aldean's song "Try That in a Small Town", dude has never lived in a small town lol. Or his song Country Boy's World which contains the lines: "Rome Georgia Picked peaches off the trees" The problem with that, is that there are no peach trees in Rome Georgia lol.
You need to watch "cant handle this right now". He had to quit for a while due to having panic attacks on stage. This song explains his feelings, leading up to it. i think five years later he puts out a new special, "inside". Its real good. You just have to listen to that other song first.
My favorite line that no one ever catches, “Like Mike Evander-ln’, f- your ears I’m panderin’.” Such a great reference they almost always gets overlooked.
I don't even like country music and I still find it wholesome you fell in love with it from the requests you've got. Your obvious gratitude at finding a genre you love through your channel and viewers is just way too heart warming Thanks for the nice feels creator and viewers alike. You guys do good work together
Great reaction Britt. Totally get where he’s comin’ from. The great Alan Jackson and George Strait perform a duet - ‘Someone Committed Murder Down on Music Row’ which also laments how modern country music has gone down this same path. Well worth a listen. Love your channel, keep up the good work. 👍🏼🎸🤠
My Gosh I've never been so glad I clicked on a vid in my life. Lmao. This was so funny and real af. Great reaction, love watching ur genuine reactions. Ur going places Kid. Lol.
Blues Traveler - Hook. Made #23 in the top 100 songs of 1995. Whole song makes fun of the music industry and it's fans while most people did not even know it was making fun of them and just loved the song.
There is some amazing country music out there, Dolly Parton especially is incredible as are Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, but at some point (from my memory, around 2001) it devolved into basically what Bo is describing in this song. Stadium Country, also called Bro-Country, showed up around 2011 and is basically just pop music with a country sound. Keith Urban is a great example of the genre, a lot of his music sounds exactly like this song.
90s had some amazing rock country mash and into the 2000s-2011 it turned into a more pop country and by the end of 2011 we started to see a weird hip hop infused country then it just became a bad trap country i think most country songs now are just awful cant stand the radio i loved 90s and i loved 05-2011 sound but now it just sounds awful
Oh, he takes down pop (Repeat Stuff) and your example of rap (its bo yo) in other songs as well. Definitely a few of his earlier songs. Not as early as gems like "My whole family thinks im gay" tho, this was one of the few that he recorded in his bedroom when he was still living with his parents and uploaded it on UA-cam.
i'm very drunk and tired but on your upload page everything is uploaded 17hrs ago so i'll refrain from watching more than this until i check it out after a good nap
A lot of newer country music (from the late 2000's to now) is "bro country", guys singing about hot girls wearing short shorts, drinking on a dirt road, in a truck, and once you've heard that once you really don't need to hear the other 250 songs exactly like it. As I've known for years just because someone wears a cowboy hat that don't make him a cowboy. Country music is about the lyrics and not just the music, so if you can't hear the words of a song because of the music it has stopped being country and is pop music.
Most of the real ones wear ball caps, and just go to work unnoticed. Unfortunately, their pride leads to them dying too soon, poor, and unnoticed, which is the most Country way to go. Country came from Blues, and in the old days, it showed.
This is your first bo burnham experience, your in for a treat. *all eyes on me, gods perspective, welcome to the internet, can’t handle this (kanye dis,)
In most trends I think it starts out pretty genuine but gets more corporate over time. Artists don't make as much money anymore is another factor about the rapper's.
There are definitely some formulas that you will find. If I recall, you've already noted some of the cross over formulas from R&B. I find a lot of newer country to be rather Pop-ish. Some is still good, but the older style country is definitely more my wheelhouse. If you want a good song that fits into the formula, yet I think you will really appreciate... Check out "Front Porch Looking In" by Lonestar. It will really pull on your parent heartstrings, though from a dad's perspective.
Would love to listen to some Jason Isbell with you and hear your reaction. Amazing songwriter, more Americana than classic country in sound but wonderful songs that take you to vivid places in time and space and can make you smile and weep all at the same time. I'd suggest Alabama Pines, Speed Trap Town, If We Were Vampires, 24 Frames, Dress Blues, etc., etc., etc. Love you reactions. You're a good sport and I appreciate your enthusiasm for new things, your kindness, and you have a wonderful singing voice to from the little bits you've shown us. Wishing you the day you deserve, and looking forward to seeing what's next.
What he is saying is so true I've requested before that you react to George Strait and Allan Jackson Murder On Music Row there is another one by Shooter Jennings Waylon Jennings son They Should Outlaw You
Bo is great. I also found it funny that "rape" is edited out, but the word "fuck" stays in. I know it's because of youtube's algorithm bs but it reminds me of movie ratings and parents being okay having their kids watch R-rated movies since it's only violence and gore. But as soon as sex/nudity is brought up, those same people lose their minds.
Great reaction. Please do ‘Repeat Stuff’.. imagine this, but ripping on artists like Bieber rather than country music. The music video is awesome. But the live is good too.
Fun reaction. I think you should turn down you mic a little. Your voice is a lot louder than the video! And try not to clap, that was really loud in my headphones!!
My dear if you want to hear Country Music then listen to George Jones, Faron Young, Hank, Williams, Ray Price True Country Music kind of died around 1976
If you’d like to hear some modern country that isn’t pandering garbage, I’ve prepared a short list of legit artists: Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Whiskey Myers, Colter Wall, The Dead South, Margo Price, The Steel Drivers (Chris Stapleton’s band before he went solo) and Jason Isbell. There’s a lot more out there but this is a nice starter set.
I don't know if I would put Keith Urban in that category, he is a h*** of an entertainer, and definitely not all country. I took my wife to see him last summer and she doesn't like country at all, and she loved the show. Good luck with that giant rabbit hole!
@@michaeljacyna1973 yeah bro, but still, by censoring puns we are building a path to limit our freedom of speech (i know it sounds super dramatic but there is at least 50% truth in these words) and count or cunt, not a really bad word anyways.
@sickturret3587 I consider she likely blocked it to not get blocked by YT algorithms. No big deal, we've heard the song. This is just a reaction to it. It is a little bit dramatic IMO.
@sickturret3587 Also, you need to consider YT being a privately owned entity have every right to censor as they please. It's not like this is a slippery slope to government censorship.
There's an interesting argument that country music really took this ugly commercialised almost self parody turn post 9/11 because of the heightened nationalism in response to that attack. All the beautiful soulful earnest country songs got shut out by these loud ass "MURICA AND PROUD" style songs diggin their heels into blue collar southern American stereotype, and usually from people who hadn't actually lived a rural country lifestyle in YEARS, if ever. No more vunerability or using country stylings to tell a story, it was al "HOT GIRL IN DAISY DUKES AND BEER AND EAGLES AND STARS N STRIPES YEE HAW" on an electric drum beat so it can get on the pop stations.
He makes fun of fame and making money off easy plots and writing - repeat stuff about pop music, pandering about country music, even the Kanye rant is just about how you can say whatever and take peoples money to perform by making things catchy and fun even if it lacks substance which is the funny part because all of Bo’s songs have substance underneath the funny phrases.
“I write songs for the people who do jobs in the towns that I’d never move to” is one of the hardest lines ever delivered.
"Y'all dumb mfers want a key change?!" Is my favorite line in any song
Hi Britt, real country people say that the singers he is describing "They are all hat and no cattle"
They also say people who lump music in a bag are idiots.
Name one genuine country "artist"
George Strait is the real deal!
@@toddntamcates1974As was Chris LeDoux(RIP)
And Alan Jackson
Love Bo. He takes apart Teen Pop music in a similar way with his song "Repeat Stuff" Highly recommend it. Even has a music video!
And rap/hiphop in Oh Bo
And inspirational songs in "Kill yourself"
"Is he gonna sing, or is this stand-up?"
Yes.
I absolutely love Bo Burnham, and this and Right Brain, Left Brain are my favorites! "IT'S A F*CKING SCARECROW AGAIN!" has become one of my favorite quotes.
Honestly I'm surprised stadium country music survived this song. Bo laid it bare.
i really wish this did to stadium country music what zoolander did to male modeling.8
i love the parallels you make with rap and country because there are so many its kinda crazy
Oh Bo is his take on hip hop like this.
Rap, country, folk, punk, all at their cores about people telling stories about their lives.
@neilomac This what more people need to hear

My favorite line that no one ever catches, “Like Mike Evander-ln’, f- your ears I’m panderin’.” Such a great reference they almost always gets overlooked.
Absolutely it does! One of the best lines ever!
Sadly, that's because it comes right after the second best joke in the song, so most people are still laughing when it rolls by.

we have that same problem in germany with "volkstümliche" music, which is sort of popart of actual volk music. its so the same!
Also most hate it and avoid it like the plague ... Like people end conversations and friendships about liking or not liking "Volksmusik"
Old video you might like is 4 chords by axis of awesome, they show how every pop song is written the same
He's very good at stuff like this. Can't Handle This was basically the same idea.
Bo’s parody songs:
Pop - repeat stuff
Hip hop - oh bo
Drake - 5 years
Kanye - can’t handle this
Enjoy!

this is one of about 2 of the only "country" songs I can stand.

Please do bo Burnham - art is dead!
He nailed mainstream country.
Truth.
"I don't like dirt" I love that you get it
