  • We continue to develop the Vale Scene and this is one example of an important detail being modelled ready for placing in the diorama.
Pendon Museum in Oxfordshire preserves the idyllic rural scene and transport of the 1920s and 30s in a miniature form. We provide an enjoyable and informative experience for family groups; for those interested in all disciplines of modelling; and for those interested in 20th Century rural England, its buildings and its railways.

Many thanks for your great comment Chris.
The Pendon team have worked for many decades, trying to accurately portray a past era that can be shared with and enjoyed by us today and generations in the future. It’s a place to either remember or imagine how life was in the 1930’s. With the true to life scenery and the realistically recreated rolling stock , visitors both in person and online have the unique opportunity of experiencing a truly unique snapshot of times gone by….

Great work! Thank you for the detailed explanations!
The one thing - the only thing - I feel missing here, on this layout is... life. Scenes of people engaged with one another or simply doing something - working, walking, waiting... - by themselves. I am sure there is a good reason why things are the way they are - and I would certainly like to know that!

Thank you for your kind comments. We do have scenes of people on the layout and I suspect they have not yet been captured in our videos so far presented. It is deemed to be lunchtime in the Vale and we have 2 groups of farm workers taking a break. Other cameos show a doctor visiting; a nurse and a vicar coming to the house of someone ill; workers in the station yard; gents outside a pub having a pint and many others. All are in relaxed poses and in conversation and we try and avoid unnatural action poses.

@@PendonMuseumVideos, a visit to the museum would be a different thing than an online experience. But that is not possible under the current circumstances.

Great build. I don't have that much patience or dexterity so it's plasticard, foamex and plastruct type products for me. Blessings

When I started helping at Pendon in the mid 60's Roy's view was still very much in the 30's and I don't think he was keen on putting diesels on the layout. However, at that time, as a young fireman/second man diesels were very much the scene on the mainline and new diesels appearing regularly while the steam locomotives now appearing very old and run-down. However, I don't think Roy would have been upset at showing the Vale with the Western Region's progress into diesels today. From this video it was really nice seeing how these hydraulic classes looked running in the Vale. It was very tactfully done and the only disappointment was not having the D600's and the Westerrn Hydraulics on show. I stayed with Pendon until 1974 when I moved as driver to Marylebone Depot. The daily travelling too and from London as well as a lot of Sunday working made it impossible for me to continue at Pendon. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Pendon and it is always a bit sad for me to return every now and again and find most of the old lads have now passed on.

First of all, thank you for being a supporter of Pendon for so many years and for helping at the museum. Thank you also for your thoughts on diesels in the Vale and your experiences, it’s a pleasure to read.
You might like to know that we have a repeat Special Showing over the weekend of Dec 7th/8th, when you will indeed see a Western in maroon livery running along the sea wall. Thanks again and we hope you enjoy our future short videos.

@@PendonMuseumVideos Thank you for your kind reply. I would like to add that while so many of the old lads have gone the present group are looking after Pendon every bit as well and with the respect that Roy held for the project. My two American friends who accompanied me this last visit were extremely pleased and couldn't believe such a fantastic model railway existed and really appreciated the decades of work that have gone into it. I will try and visit in December if possible.

Thank you for your kind comments about the tank. The model scale is 4mm/ft or 1/76th. The track gauge is EM or 18.2mm i.e. closer to scale than off the shelf OO trains which have a gauge of 16.5m.
