  • Hey everyone! A few of you will likely know that Louis Vuitton have discontinued the Toiletry Pouch from its line-up. When I looked into this a bit more though, I did notice that (I’m not sure if this is intended), but most of the remaining travel accessories are designed in such a way as would make it impossible to use them as a bag.
    What do you all think?

So glad I bought these pieces new back in the early 2000's. I haven't purchased anything new from LV in years. I have five bags from them and I think three of them they don't make anymore. I love bags and accessories, but I'm just so turned off by how greedy these companies have become. My absolute favorite bag is my 18 year old Chanel. I carry it everyday!

It’s such a shame that everything gets increased so quickly. A lot of people would love to own at least one special luxury bag but it gets more and more unattainable. I feel that brands can still feel exclusive even when they have a line that isn’t too crazily priced. Pre-loved is become more and more attractive (though also more expensive)

    • @monimarz

I wish the preloved market made sense. There was a pair of Hermes sandals I wanted that were preloved, worn, and priced at the same value as the new ones. I just feel people are buying luxury and trying to upsell to make a quick buck. I think Luxury Houses have caused their own problems and are trying to reel it in. LV has always been overpriced and repetitive. I try to avoid "new money" Instagramers.

Iconic luxury is kept out of reach of most to maintain the exclusivity or it loses its "lust". Coach is making beautiful bags of excellent quality and carefully finished. They are still not cheap and we get a lot for our money. Bought my first Coach over 30 years ago and still love it.

The toiletry bags had that trapeze shaped bottom so you could stand it up on a counter. Great if you're traveling and in a hotel bathroom or are setting it on a desk. Besides distorting the shape with anything thicker than a nail file, you can't stand any of those flat pouches up. They have to lay on their sides and I don't want my stuff sitting like that even in my own bathroom. I'm not precious about my things. If I buy them, I use them, but I also take care of my stuff. A flat pouch is silly as a toiletry bag.

Sophie, I appreciate your perspective and your efforts to make luxury items accessible to more people. In the spirit of value, I find it amazing that people spend thousand of dollars on bags and then they spend MORE to purchase an organizer to make their bag more useable. Is function something that prominent design houses can not be bothered with? Also, luxury bags tend to “color transfer”-clothing fades on to them. Some bags come unstitched and lose their shape. Is it unreasonable to expect superior quality when a person drops thousands on a luxury bag?

What is ironic, is for all the labels constantly combating and advertising against; this just pushes the average customer to look to faux items to satisfy their shopping wants. Heightening prices, exclusivity and cancelling in-demand products is just going to lead to the inevitable consequence of exacerbating the global counterfeit market.
And counterfeit items are not cheap either. In cost and in more regularity, quality. A faux item might cost a third of the real item, but that money spent by buyers adds up. And all of that money is being dismissed by the labels, in their greed and arrogance.

Sophie, your comments on these items disappearing or 'being cancelled' because the crowds are more aware of them (and brands do not like selling more the cheaper than the expensive items) perhaps come from a place of you wanting people to experience luxury. This isn't an interest to the big corporate houses of fashion: they want expansion and profit! And if these standards consist in rising prices up and 'restricting the accessible items' periodically is just them doing business. Let's be real: Tory Burch isn't really a reference of french classic as Chanel or Louis Vuitton and people know it. But they also know they can't afford the items they once could. In my view, it all comes to the fact that we either keep up 'belonging to' the people who can afford luxury, or not. And by definition 'luxury' means things you can buy and do not need: either elongate the dream a couple of years (if you REALLY want to get that Classic flap Chanel) or just be educated enough to know that sometimes true luxury isn't just brand recognition

I truly believe the theory that they did this to keep the brands exclusivity. They don’t like their lower priced items made into a handbag. Thats money lost if people get the look for less. I also believe the theory that they will eventually get rid of most canvas pieces due to the counterfeit market. I don’t think Lv will ever completely get rid of the canvas monogram being how iconic it is. Maybe they will incorporate it into their leather pieces.

Hi Sophie, love you and your contents, I've been following you for years...well, as far as I noticed, 2020 and 2021 are definetly the prices' increase years! I'm a lot into luxury either bags or jewlery, and it seems that people all around the world have spent so much time stuck at home watching youtube or scrolling on instagram as hobbies, that a massive amount of "new consumers" was born, and almost a new generation or followers under influence is now ready to spend their savings into luxury. This is the only reason I found to actually explain these CRAZY raises that contaminated the entire high end market despite a world wide pandemic...Chanel started first, but even brands that would not play this game too obviously in the past, are on such a wave now, that even after months of real saving and carefulness, you can't plan to treat yourself in any kind of way! The point is that certain influencers that work for luxury brands are so spoilt, or wealthy, that they shoot themselves wearing extremly pricy items, that years ago, people would ask for very special occasions, like once in a life time. Nowadays it seems almost normal and natural to shop at Hermes or Chanel every day and splurge like crazy on material stuff, that are right now way over estimated...So, to me, we're all now considering that having a Cartier love bracelet or a Birkin bag is "a go to", or just basics, but not at all, these things are still pure luxury and high spendings. As a conclusion, I would say that influencers help brands legitimate increases as they spread this new normality of non stop consuming on social medias, which can be dangerous and depressing for those can't afford any of these stuff.

I tell all my friends to hurry and buy all the luxury handbags they’ve been wanting, right now! The prices are continuing to increase and after while .... it will get to where you cannot afford it unless you’re truly rich. I was blessed for my business to really do well despite the pandemic. So I knocked out 8 handbags off my Lux wishlist last year and 2 this year. My latest was my Goyard St Louis bag, which I purchased 2 wks ago. Goyard has increased their prices as well. I can now say I have cleared off my entire Lux Wish List. Anything I buy now, are just things that are special edition. But I have attained all the major “must have” classics that I wanted apart of my collection.

Hi Sophie I made a bag from a Dior men’s vip gift I picked up from eBay last Xmas and I added a chunky chain strap for cross body use and a chunky pearl strap for hand held use. I also added Dior stick on vip set and a couple of CD vip charms . I bought one for my son and he converted his to a bag as well.

Hi, Sophie! The Toiletries 15/19/26 were meant to be worn as travel catch-alls or as clutches. Personally, I find all this chunky, shiny chain hysteria attached to a felt bag organizer a “trying too hard”look and quite tacky, as a matter of fact..Lady D was the epitome of elegance for a reason. But this is just my opinion.

In the heart of lock down when not one person was walking the streets of NYC, I bought the LV GM pouch and one in damier. I made them both into purses. The GM I used a big short gold chain and the white damier I used a pearl strap. Not too happy with the pearl strap but I used the Gm monogram to attend my birthday party and gotten so many compliments. It looks really good. The thinner cases are not practical to put anything inside except if you put notebooks and pens. 💜🌺

I wanted to also mention that actually learned about Aspinal from your videos about 2 years ago and I have really fallen in love with the brand. Such pretty, high quality bags. My SO even gifted me 2 bags from them for our anniversary! They are so special to me, I treat them better than my vintage flap bag 🙃 also I don’t see them here at all in Canada!
