Wild how to some people 2024 was a year with no monumental releases but for me it had multiple huge games that I adore and have been looking forward to for years. It takes all types!
When he says 'monumental' he doesn't mean 'a game one person really liked a ton'. They mean in terms of industry and consumer impact. Ya know, the Baldur's Gate III, Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild, GTAVI's of the world and whatnot.
The FF7 Rebirth situation fascinates me- Remake benefitting from Covid and people who got into the game before they knew they didn't like where it was going, as well as selling to a FAR broader audience on PS4 vs PS5, feels like easy explanations for why Remake outsold it. But there HAVE been PS5 games that sold way more like Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarok or Horizon. I would like to see a thorough analysis of those games and how they appealed to the big audience that DOES exist on PS5, what they did to draw people in that FF7 didn't. One interesting factor that probably doesn't explain ALL of it but adds an interesting wrinkle is that some people may just have gotten ALL their nostalgic FF7 love out of the way with FF7 Remake. They got to see Aerith again after so long. They got see Cloud fight Sephiroth. They got Wall Market. They got that sweet nostalgic injection they were craving, and now they don't need another dose. But I also think the GaaS stuff plays an important part as the big JRPG interested audience just may have been consumed by Mihoyo. Like, mock them as pretty anime people collecting games as much as you want, the younger audience who has no money but a smartphone may have been hijacked by Mihoyo and are now getting ALL their anime melodrama and beautiful world exploration for FREE, with new landmasses to explore as the world is updated. Why, if you're into that, would you pay the exorbitant toll to gain access to FF7 ReBirth when Genshin is right there? Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sells to the people who are into JRPG's, can pay 80 bucks, own an expensive next gen system and who ISN'T letting a free game that they can also play on their phones consume all their time. Maybe SquareEnix need to adjust expectations after new market realities. I'll be fascinated seeing where they go next, at least. Also Nintendo being dull is something I bristle against, even if a few seconds of thought makes me unable to argue the point. If all you consider are those three games then a spin-off Zelda game may be interesting but not big, a Mario Party title is old hat and a Mario & Luigi title may be unexpected, but still part of an old formula. The closest thing to an unexpected game may, in terms of games that go against what we expect of Nintendo, have been Emio: The Smiling Man, but it's still a sequel AND a visual novel which, I have sadly had to accept, is something many gamers adamantly refuse to accept. Though I guess it's easier to understand that refusal in a Nintendo context- they have made their fame from experiences FAR more interactive than most visual novels can be. If it's not a game where Nintendo audiences can move a little scrimblo around a 3D world, they will not have it. I will simply take these remakes of games I haven't played because I didn't have disposable income when they were new and enjoy them as they are fine works in their own right, and enjoy waiting for the big league surprises to follow- but I accept that's not a path most Nintendo players are willing to walk, their tastes are just too different.
@6:47 FFVII Rebirth has a 92 on Metacritic. That’s the definition of universal praise from those who’ve played it. Whether the game ultimately underperformed in sales in another matter entirely.
"What do you think of Kid G?" garnered a much bigger laugh than I would have expected it to from yours truly. It's wild. Rebirth is still one of the very few and far between games that elicited the vibe of "holy shit, I am playing something truly SPECIAL" from start to finish. At the time it seemed unfathomable that anything else could be game of the year. But even then there was a shocking amount of negativity or apathy online and I kept wondering if we were really playing the same game. It's just one of a long string of tipping points in me realizing that my gaming tastes truly no longer mesh with the vocal majority's. When I really love something it's no longer a shock to go online and realize that nobody else gives a crap about it. And I'm good with that.
Happy holidays and a happy new year, Kyle. On FF7 Rebirth, I'm of the genuine belief that FF7 is too old and takes too long to come out for it to be the biggest game ever anymore. There's too much going on that it has to compete with, from free gaas games to cheaper more widely available games. Maybe they should make them a little less expensive to make.
And also, while the first episode sold well, that doesn't mean everybody who bought it played it or liked it. And this becomes the cap for Rebirth sales - people who bought and liked the first episode, since it's not something you can just jump into on its own. I also think many people did not expect Rebirth to be as massive or as good as it was. Even for those who liked the first episode well enough, plenty didn't think it was super amazing or weren't thrilled with the new story direction, and that limits enthusiasm for the next episode.
It also suffered very much from being a PS5 exclusive. There are many people (including me) who have just been waiting for the PC release to finally be able to play it.
Time was definitely a factor. I assume most of the fans of FF7 are in their 30s, maybe 40s so they can't just wait 4 or 5 years for the second part of a game.
I low-key think they messed up b the marketing on it too. They focused too hard on the story and not hard enough on the absolutely incredible combat system.
There's already a name for the type of live service game you're referring to. It's called Gacha. When someone says they play a Gacha game they don't think of Fornite, valorant, or any sports game, but an anime game where you gamble for pretty characters.
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3: Pin the Tale is the triumphant surprise Switch 2 launch title. After a failed attempt to save Diddy Kong from King K. Rool by pulling on his tail two hard, Diddy's Tail magically pops off but mysteriously still retains its motor ability and reattaches itself to Donkey Kong's cortex. With said tail pinned onto Donkey Kong's body, Donkey Kong sets out to save Diddy Kong with an added utility limb opening up platforming locomotion and movement options never seen by the Gorilla previously. Final Metacritic score: 93.
6:51 Nowadays, many internet users are obsessed with anime and see it as superior. Because of this, a lot of people love anime games with shallow, surface-level stories. They don't focus on quality and instead think, "As long as the characters are attractive! Wow, this character has a cool gimmick-genius! This character has a tragic backstory-so emotional!" (even though many anime stories follow the same pattern). Anime gacha games only reinforce this way of thinking.
For better or worse Rebirth is lazer focussed on pleasing a particular audience, Luckily I'm part of that audience. I feel spoiled by what was served up (Ending mess aside) and I'm even more excited for PT 3. Gacha games are a weird beast they're predatory yet the gameplay is comfort food.
It's not surprising to me that gacha games do well. They're appealing to look at and are designed to be addictive. I do think it's neat that we now have games that are entirely paid for by whales. It's like PoE 2, I'm just waiting for it to come out for free so I don't have to pay a single cent for it. I want to spend my money on traditional releases that I like, but they don't really make those anymore. I'm not into bloated open-worlds, interactive movies written for the modern audience, and remakes. My hope for 2025 is that we get good games again with Switch 2.
The current narrative surrounding rebirth makes me very sad. Like you Kyle, I thought Rebirth was a phenomenal achievement and absolutely blew my mind when playing through it.
As you pointed out, Nintendo is likely dedicating most of their major resources for the Switch 2. So 2024 being more of a boring year for the company isn’t all that surprising, although this is definitely one of their better transitionary years.
5:58 - FF7 Remake may have gotten a bit of a COVID quarantine bump (though frankly, I think that went to Animal Crossing), but I’d argue it’s also a much better game than Rebirth. Rebirth took Remake’s modest amount of bloat and went completely overboard. It’s so much extra content that it stops being fun to engage with it after a while, and this is coming from a massive FF7 fan. That said, I plan to crit path the stories of both games before the final one comes out, so maybe ignoring all the extra junk and just focusing on the story will help?
I just platinumed the game, and playing on Hard I just went through the story. It’s still got filler that makes it dense and some beats just don’t hit like they should/did in the OG. It’s got a heavy amount of exposition in the last two chapters that honestly could have been spread throughout the game rather than treated as a bookend.
Idk I spent 91 hours playing it no problem. Slopped up all that stuff and had a wonderful time. The sit ups can fuck off though 😅 I cant do that shit. Ive never seen so much lovingly crafted little stories and characters across an entire rpg like that either. And you can skip lots of it and do the rest on a NG+. Like idk it weirds me out that people talk about this way like who complains that New Vegas would take 100 hours if you did every quest in one playthrough?
To me rebirth is what rpg is supposed to be. I love all the contents including all the side quests and mini games. I like the sit up minigame, fort condor, piano, chocobo gliding and I don't even dislike the gambit minigame. I want my game to be 1000 hrs if they can. I just dont understand why people complaining about the huge amount of side contents that are in the game since 90% of them are skippable. If people dont like side content, skip them. If you like them, do it. Or you can just do the ones you like and skip the rest. That's the point of this game since anyone can do whichever side contents at any point. You can even do the earlier quest in grassland at the end of the game. Its just dont make any sense that a lot of people dont like having more things to do. To me having "too much content" is a good thing than having "not enough content", besides, I want my game worth the money and play time is a big consideration for me to pick a game. I will less likely to buy a game that have less than 25 hrs play time even if its considered by many as a good game.

Least pretentious FF7R fan.
I can't believe he mentioned my favorite Naturo character, Sahsookay!
There's already a name for the type of live service game you're referring to. It's called Gacha. When someone says they play a Gacha game they don't think of Fornite, valorant, or any sports game, but an anime game where you gamble for pretty characters.
Kyle is gonna be flabbergasted at how well Mario Party will do this holiday season haha
LoL happy new year kyle
Shocking and disturbing revelation in this one, folks.
Happy Holidays!
Proud to be of the 0.4% with zero anime interest
6:51 Nowadays, many internet users are obsessed with anime and see it as superior. Because of this, a lot of people love anime games with shallow, surface-level stories. They don't focus on quality and instead think, "As long as the characters are attractive! Wow, this character has a cool gimmick-genius! This character has a tragic backstory-so emotional!" (even though many anime stories follow the same pattern). Anime gacha games only reinforce this way of thinking.
Cat in the background is such a common YT trope I'm convinced they know what cameras are and just want to be in the shot.
i forgot what fairgames was. then i strained to try remember
it's the monkey mask game right?
Happy New Year, Bossman🫡
Thank you Kyle, appreciate you.
Missed opportunity to say
IT'S TAIL TIME!
"Baby I'm bad! for business...."
Games as a Service are Casino games. They keep you there, throwing money at the games.
Video games basically were slot machines at the beginning so its all come full circle
2025 Nintendo needs: Mario All-Stars Skateboarding with a one-time X-Games style event hosted to promote the game.
Rebirth is nowhere near some 'niche' appeal game, unless you somehow think RPGs are still niche in the year 2024. :/
@@maynardburgerIt’s not the genre that’s niche. It’s catering itself to a single game’s fanbase inside that genre.
The intro bit confirms Kyle is just a future timeline Scott The Woz
It's not surprising to me that gacha games do well. They're appealing to look at and are designed to be addictive. I do think it's neat that we now have games that are entirely paid for by whales. It's like PoE 2, I'm just waiting for it to come out for free so I don't have to pay a single cent for it. I want to spend my money on traditional releases that I like, but they don't really make those anymore. I'm not into bloated open-worlds, interactive movies written for the modern audience, and remakes. My hope for 2025 is that we get good games again with Switch 2.
Big bad beetleborgs
The current narrative surrounding rebirth makes me very sad.
Like you Kyle, I thought Rebirth was a phenomenal achievement and absolutely blew my mind when playing through it.
Every time I find out what the honk means, I've forgotten it by the next video.
Great episode!
My harsh realization was that Nine Sols was an absolute masterpiece, but no one seems to care.
Caught in the "Hollow-Knight clone" / "AA-budget activist studio" crossfire.
doesn't help ff7 that its fanbase spreads the worst word of mouth about it
Kyle initial Tokyo Toni's quote was just poetic 😭
I wouldn't consider the side content in Rebirth filler especially since you can skip almost all of it.
Like idk it weirds me out that people talk about this way like who complains that New Vegas would take 100 hours if you did every quest in one playthrough?
if ppl focused so much on the chocobo breeding and materia grind part of ff7, they'd loath the og ff7. But ppl were much smarter back then
To me rebirth is what rpg is supposed to be.
He's so pleased with himself about that ending.
"My hope for 2025?
Fairgame$ comes out in 2026"
That was absolutely savage 😂
This is my favorite opening, I love you
Really hoping that the inbetweener video is a 20-minute animated episode of Naturo
