The fact that it's even possible to not be paid for work is disgusting. No other kind of industry allows that kind of thing but apparently arts and entertainment can get away with just taking the work and leaving those that did it in the gutter.
I can't believe people actually blindly believe UA-cam comments. Even if you do actually have a friend who worked on Funko Fusion, this is the equivalent of "My dad owns Microsoft". The difference being kids 15 years ago could smell the bullshit when adults today blindly accept every comment as fact because it fits their narrative.

Funko Fusion was so bad it took down Itch io, robbing indie game developers of any sales during that period. Of course they passed the buck to their brand company, who passed it to their AI software, like that's supposed to be an excuse.
Funko Fusion trailers really screamed "corpos saw Lego games doing great and yeaaaaaaaah" and no surprise it is not good, but I did not expect it to be this horrible. Wow.
The Lego games are at least fun and great games in their own right. Although they were much more fun when it was all mumbles IMO.
Although I still have no idea why Lego Horizon exists. It's just a product that screams "Sony paid for this to happen."
@@SadisticSenpai61 I love Horizon (the first game more than the 2nd but whatever) but it's kind of crazy how hard Sony has pushed the "IP". It was the face of their ill-fated VR2, Aloy finds her way into all kinds of odd shit and then a Lego game dedicated to it? I wish they'd just accept it's never going to be as popular as they want it to be. Also, it wouldn't hurt for them to stop releasing them within weeks of games like BOTW and Elden Ring which any numbskull could have told them was going to suck up all the air in the room.

Suicide Squad broke my heart. Rocksteady is just another victim of the live service fallout plague turning a once renown studio into a live service machine.

@@goufr3540 DEI is just code for 'me angy that non-white men and non-anime waifu women exists in a game!!' at this point. None of you non-sapients can even correctly identify what is ""DEI"" about it, but I certainly can see that all the bad decisions behind these games are mandated by nepo-baby mediocre white male C-suites that get huge paychecks while the devs are worked to the bone for pennies and then get laid off after the games inevitably fail because of their boss's bad decision making and terrible marketing. Almost like 99% of the issues in gaming can actually be traced to the top, what a shock.
Suicide Squad is worse than Concord. Concord was an attempt at a "new IP" that fell on its face for all the reasons you listed. But Suicide Squad was attached like a facehugger to the Arkham games, dragging them down with it. EVERYONE said "we don't want this", but they doubled down, and well yeah one of the worst games of all times.
The story telling wasn't all that bad as they hired talented voice actors and had some kool ideas! It had potential! A fun coop DC adventure for the nerds!
But nooooo they just had to make it a unfinished online only micro transaction mess instead. That pretty much ruined it.
Didn't help that the brainless incel crowd screamed woke at it like the lil nazi lovers that they are haha. GI Robot should pay them a visit.
But yeah it mainly flopped because of the lame corpo crap. Not because there wasn't enough boobage or whatever those idiots gripe about.

I think Concord failed not for technical reasons, but as a result of catastrophic marketing, PR and leadership decisions. Wrong market, wrong time.

She played Funko Fusion for us. Arguably so we wouldn't have to... but no one was going to. She sacrificed part of her limited existence to warn us of a landmine we all saw a mile away.
There's a tragic irony in that. Heroism for the sake of it (even though it was unnecessary this time) is truly a beautiful thing.
My favorite UA-camrs played funko fusion and I literally couldn’t finish the video it was that bad. Even they couldn’t make it fun

Yup. Concord is a lesson about game development that the grifters have made sure isn't learned. No-one is gonna bother arguing about it so the wokers have claimed it as exhibit A
It's literally the microcosm of reality: people will create a boogeyman for everyone to be angry about just so that nobody will actually attack the real thing that's ruining everything. Usually that last thing is rich people screwing you over for profit.
Was it that derailed? Every discussion I've seen of the game put the incompetent live service trend cliches first and foremost.

I'd argue being a fan of Concord is worse because if you liked the game enough to spend money on it only for it to hit EoS within 2 weeks. You'd still feel ripped off even if you got your money back.
My grandad bought a printer 🖨 years ago and could never figure it out so just left it. I needed a printer and my dad told me he had one so I went around and he said it has never worked so I set it up and printed what I needed. He was really happy as he had, had it for years. Apparently the next time he tried to use it the build in obsolescescence date was reached and he had to bin it. I read your comment and saw parallels

People have been invested in the Arkham games since 2009 and Suicide Squad was the conclusion we got. I really don't think it's worse getting a refund after a couple weeks of playing an online shooter with the five other people who bought it.

The difference really is, Astrobot was "game first" and then "here's some IP dudes you find and rescue and they they go and live in your home and then you go back to doing The Game Stuff". Funko was just IP first and foremost and only, with a sprinkling of game-ish something.
Even the Lego games they are aping from are mostly just IP tossed into a lego blender and they've been doing it incredibly well for decades at this point. I feel like as long as something is done well, you can pass over the cynicism of why the product exists in the first place. If your game sucks then all you are left with is cynical corporate slop.

I think it was because Astro Bot used context. That's not KRATOS you're rescuing, it's a Kratos-bot. We're not going to be doing anything Kratos-like all the sudden, we're not going to discuss murder or anything, it's just a small shout out in a collectable.
Like, Dead Before Daylight is a massive crossover for horror icons but it works because 1) it sticks to the horror genre, we're not randomly murdering My Little Pony or something, and 2) it bothered to come up with an overarching story for why these characters are interacting. It may be a bare-bones reason, but it's enough.
Welp, we've finally reached the point where I did not know 80% of these games existed. I pay a lot more attention to video games than I do pop music, and yet I feel just as lost as to what the hell these games were as I do when I watch somebody's "End of Year" list for the pop hits.
I only know of them because I read the reviews on the Jimquisiton site tbh.

I don't deep dive upcoming games anymore, but a live service needs players, it needs to launch with buzz. For a sony backed property it feels like they really didn't care about it succeeding at all.

Text shrinking when you turn up the screen resolution is an old problem. The first couple of Quake engines have it, as does Unreal 1. It's caused by making the mistake of equating screen pixels with the texels of the 2D stuff you're putting down. You need to do your 2D stuff in its own coordinate space, and then transform it into the pixel one. The BUILD engine treats all the 2D stuff (menus, status bar, etc) as being on a virtual 320*200 screen, then scaling it up like the sprites to the appropriate size for whatever higher resolution you're using.
@@Roxor128 A while ago I replayed the Dragon Age series. Origins needs Bethesda levels of modding to be playable on a modern PC, and one of the biggest hurdles was UI size. Ended up needing a hacked .exe to get that to work.

As a GW2 player I completely forget that's a thing, and when I try other MMOs I'm immediately slapped by how awful they can be. I'm equally spoiled by stuff like the account-wide permanent skin & dye unlocks.
Memories of that kind of nonsense happening in runescape flashed back to me. I had some troll follow me across several servers just to steal whatever I was hunting out from under me.
Steph's "I fucking hate MMOs" resonated with my soul in that moment.
Viva La Dirt League did a take on this in their "EPIC NPC Man" vids. One was where you get a boss down to his last bit of health, only for someone else to run in and get the last hit, defeating the boss, claiming the EX and getting the loot.
Funko Fusion is just the latest version of "Z-tier licensed game" of the type we may have thought was extinct. You know, your LJN NES games or your Home Improvement side scroller for SNES, that kind of thing. I'm not worried about kids being ruined by it because we all had that experience of "Oh wow, they made a game out of... Dick Tracy?! Surely this will be awesome!"

Granted, as a broke-ass uni student I have to be a lot choosier with what I play and spend time on, but this year it was pretty much exclusively rhythm games and RPGs (and most of those were from Japan, like FFXIV: Dawntrail, FFVII: Rebirth, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree)... I really can't think of much else that got me excited to play this year D:

If they'd been the NPCs in an RPG where the environment matched their weird aesthetic and the RPG elements had been good, they would've been fine.
That is to say, they'd have worked in a completely different role in a completely different game.

Looking at the Concord characters makes my brain hurt. It's like they took Overwatch character palettes and dumped them onto background extras. The characters look awful and gaudy, and their personalities boil down to generic lines and pronoun tags. We seriously have Thanos's Blue Cousin, Robot Made of Lootboxes, and What the Hell Is Up With That Lady's Spacesuit.
And yet, an aggressive fantwit tried to explain to me how unique and impressive these characters are. Because how dare anyone who didn't buy the game have an opinion, I guess.
I still can't get over those uncanny valley faces everyone has.
Stephanie made me a little bit happier inside by calling Advertisers out for 'gutting the language with algorithms. I find it absolutely disgusting and one of the biggest problems in society today: the idea that it's okay to bleep out 'uncomfortable' words for better monetization.
This is literally how the party controlled people in 1984. They forced it upon us. We ask for it in exchange for videos.
As someone who has genuinely suffered from suicidal ideation, I'm so thankful that Steph called that out. "Unalive" softens the blow of something as serious and tragic as death, especially suicide. The most serious and grave thing of all has been deemed toothless. Moreover, I just got my Masters' degree and, I'm meant to accept this use on the principle of being "descriptivist" when it comes to language use, but I can't here. It's not dictated by actual use, but by algorithms and monetary capital.
I hate it. Use the language we have.

I think the problem here might be different attitude. English is my second language, and the word sounds way, way harsher to me in my native language. I suspect I wouldn't even think about it if I had such a negative reaction to it.
I think softening the blow of the concept makes people see it as less harsh and more acceptable, which is why I sadly yet respectfully can not agree with you on this.
Furthermore I think we should be fighting algorithms because they only serve to help monetize videos by censoring language, which I find Orwellian.
THANK YOU FOR ADDING LBA! As someone with extreme nostalgia for the original and even the 2015 remake (so why did we need this one?) and still replay it time to time, I am astonished that it has "Very Positive" on Steam. Not only is it broken to heck, it also has atrocious art style. I even made and suggested a tiny rework to Twinsen's nose on Steam that people agreed were infinitely better, and the devs refused to listen to literally EVERYONE, even the defenders of the game, complaining about the looks.
I remember waaay, way back in the days of gaming magazines and things, I saw some screenshots of the original Little Big Adventure, perhaps in the walkthrough Q&A type section readers would write in to for help... and I remember thinking, "What lovely visuals!" Not only did it have the still semi-rare isometric perspective thing going on, so everything looked all 3D and stuff, but also bright colors and gorgeous art. And now, instead, we have "eh, just put some polygon stuff in the boring, lazy art style half of all indie games are required to have now by law, apparently." (The other permitted art style being "everyone has a big red nose and all bodies are made up of square bits", which... I dunno, I guess it's sort of Picasso style? Cubism perhaps? I dunno.)
Personally, I prefer it when there's either a unique thing going on (ideally one I don't despise, but I can overlook that for the most part, if the game is good and the art style kind of works for the setting), or just loving, detailed pixel art. Or 3D that looks great or just good enough, without looking like it cost a million dollars and 500 render hours just to model one dude's bicep armor, y'know?

@@ChknHugga Big same. They remade it in 2015? I played the original as a young kid and the visuals were mindblowing and the exploration was kinda cool but the game was a clunky mess. Literally the, at the time, amazing 3D visuals were all it had going for it. Controls were horrible, there wasn't really any combat cause if a enemy acted first you were stunlocked to death. The story was almost non-existent.
I have fond memories of it, but have 0 idea why someone would try to ressurect it, it wasn't very good. It's a product of it's time and should have stayed there.
@@Psychohistorian42 Same. LBA was a quaint game that I enjoyed in my childhood and still think fondly of but it's, at the time, cutting edge graphics was all it had going for it. The controls were beyond terrible, there really wasn't any story, the combat didn't really exist cause if a enemy saw you it was stun lock and certain death. The interface and explanations were obtuse and impenetrable. Exploration of it's world was kinda neat at least.
It was a product of it's time and still have fond memories of a broken little game back when there wasn't much else to play as a kid. It did not need to be remade. It had it's place in history. it should have stayed there.

I had to rewind because I fully thought the Yarn Commander came to life and jumped down from the tree. It was the most incredible visual effect I barely saw out the corner of my eye.
It's JSS' attention to detail that I always really appreciate. For example: the captions in a video are so rarely worth keeping on; frankly, they're usually an embarrassment to the whole idea of closed captioning. But here, they're integral and accurate, well-executed and a value-added part of the humor. Great stuff.
That's because they are usually compter- generated auto-captions, but Steph hires someone to caption all their videos.

I was disappointed that Funko Fusion wasn't slightly decent, as a LEGO style game with adult properties isn't the worst idea... but it has to be, you know, half decent.
Okay, I hadn't ever heard of Concord until after it was dead, but, honestly, there's a weird sort of charm in the aesthetic. Rather than doing a cartoonish stylization, all the characters are modeled to be, well, not quite photorealistic, but those with humanoid forms seem modeled to look more like real humans than, say, Overwatch. It makes them all look like actors from some unreleased Luc Besson movie, and, I kinda like that. I'd love to see a video game where all the aliens look like actors with makeup on. The illusion of practical effects would make for an interesting and unique aesthetic.
Despite myself, I actually do find myself amused and charmed by Lennox in particular. He's like a weird cross between Starlord, Rango, and one of my old drinking buddies.
I'm convinced that there's a way to do fairly minimal redesigns of the characters to make an aesthetic that works.
Part of the problem, I think, is that none of the characters really look like they should be hanging out together.
Make a few core designs representing a lore faction, and then add a pinch of that to the others.
Maybe.
I'm not an art director, I'm just backseat correcting a dead game I probably won't thing about again, except for bemoaning the fact that the money for Concord could have been used to make like, 20 Ape Escape games
Honestly Concord having an aesthetic inspired by 70s-Jack Kirby-Mœbius retro sci-fi ala Guardians of The Galaxy is actually something I would have found appealing, and you can tell the art team definitely were trying their damndest to achieve it. Nor were the artists lacking in technical skill. Apparently it worked against them because the silhouettes weren't distinctive enough which made ID'ing other humanoid characters in gameplay harder. I think it was less the silhouettes than the movements and stances being too standardized, but that could just be me.

It's not that it couldn't work cus hero shooters are oversaturated or what ever, It just had so many bad ideas or lack there of, horrible gameplay and barely any marketing.

God, the animation on over half of these games look so weightless and stiff. Especially noticeable on that Transformers racing game. It looks utterly ungratifying to play on top of all the previously stated issues.

If AAA companies want to sell a shitload of games then I think they should go back to the old model of selling fully completed singleplayer games with smaller teams of developers and smaller more focused levels that a player goes through as they journey through a well written story with lower fidelity but more stylized visuals at a reasonable price anyways theres some pretty good indie games these days.
I know exactly who Funko Fusion is for. It's not for kids, it's for "family-friendly" parents to FEEL they are buying something safer without thinking about it purely from the license of it being Funko.
It's the same as every Barbie game being shit and not good experiences for kids but parents don't care and kids just think either they are bad at the game or ignore it once something else gets their attention. If anything, the parent MIGHT play or watch and there might be enough loose jokes to remind them of the thing THEY like and will end up "parentplaining" to their kids. That totally works to get kids into something...

Your intro with the Gorzak commercial has solved a decades old family mystery for my husband. I was watching the video and commented that I did not recall this particular toy commercial (born in mid 80s) and showed it to my husband, who exclaims “that’s the toy” and proceeds to explain a half heard conversation from Xmas. Apparently as a small child/large toddler, he would sneak upstairs and watch whatever his mom and older brother (also mid 80s model) would watch after “bedtime”. They were watching some Steven King shorts and he was terrified by a monster on screen, I think it was called “The Crate”. They gave it some random name. Then at Xmas his older brother gets a Gorzak, my husband asks what it was and they proceeded to tell him it was “same random name” (because being an fully grown adult doesn’t preclude you from being a total dumbass) and he broke down into ugly sobs absolutely terrified. Happily older brother was an actual bro and promptly hid the toy and it was never seen again.
Poor Gorzak, you deserved better.

For example, rings of power is woke, while the expanse is not. Both have diversity and inclusivity but the expanse is written really well with really God characters with lots of development and character arcs.
The whole non binary dialogue in dragon age veilguard is mind blowing levels of cringe while some one like Gilmore from the legends of vox machina is a fan favourite character. That series has lgbtqia characters but that's not their defining feature. They are good characters who happen to be lgbtqia.

The saddest thing about Concord is how Marvel Rivals showed up a month or two later and was a massive success. Yes, it was partially because it was a popular IP, but at least it had character.
Yeah it actually did something new, monetization wasn't abhorrent, it had a distinct visual style and it's free.

I would have felt violated if I paid $70 for Suicide Squad, but I paid $3.50 and, NGL, I kinda like it. It doesn't live up to the Arkham games in anyway whatsoever, but if you have a friend then goofing off through the campaign together for the price of an energy drink is actually quite enjoyable. $3.50 really hits that price to performance sweet spot.
