Also a little emotionally abusive. He did what he did out of love but expecting her to say I love you 3 months into her first relationship at 16 and breaking up with her when she can't say it back, that's just messed up
Honestly, everyone was flawed at times. Rory. Dean, Jess, Logan. No-one was 100% stellar and everyone did something terrible in the relationship at some point. It's part of why I like the show. Mistakes all around, complications, and pushing on though.
Tbh I don't condone Dean's actions at all, but I think everything he did led up to this moment in the clip right here. Admitting to himself and not denying that Rory actually liked someone else, and that there's nothing he could have done about it. All the while before that he thought he could, like when he tried to stop her hanging out with Jess, but it still didn't stop her from liking him. He just finally realized that it was the way it was.
“He vandalized one of your books?!” Someone better warn Lorelai that her Emily is showing. I get that she wanted to protect Rory, but Lorelai hated that her parents tried to control her but then does the same thing to Rory. Remember how we all got so mad when Emily broke up Lorelai and Luke and tried to push Christopher into the mix? Lorelai basically pulled the same stuff. Maybe part of the reason Rory waited so long to end things with Dean (to the point where he had to dump her) is because Lorelai was pressuring Rory to be with Dean and took every opportunity to diss Jess. After Dean cheated on his wife with Rory, Lorelai was still welcoming to him. Then there’s Logan. Logan did more to derail Rory’s future that Jess ever did (not to mention that he cheated on her), but Lorelai got over that and even vacationed with Logan and Rory. But for some reason, she cannot let go of her first impression of Jess as a smart-mouthed teenager (gee, who does that sound like?). Even in the revival, Lorelai didn’t like that Rory got the book idea from Jess. The man grew up, turned his life around, convinced Rory to go back to Yale, wrote a book, made something of himself, and encourages Rory to do the same, but Lorelai still takes issue with him. I guess, at least, she’s civil to his face in the revival, but it’s still disappointing. Wow. Didn’t mean to go on this long... Sorry.
p3achyhearts I could see that. It's interesting, though, that the same traits that she sees as faults for him are the same traits that just make her quirky and fun.
I agree with everything you said, but I have to add that I think Lor used the fact that Rory is the kind of girl who looks after her books, and sensitive about them - against Jess. (And its not Rory bashing on my part, I love books, and personaly I would hate if somebody would write in them, but that's a different question.)
I don’t see why everyone thinks Rory should have always been this ‘perfect’ character all the time. If she was perfect, she would have been boring. And everyone’s forgetting how Dean was Rory’s first foray into a romantic relationship when she was just 16 years old. And she’s always been a people pleaser even when she was doing questionable things. She never wanted to hurt Dean, she just didn’t know how to deal with a relationship with him while also having feelings for Jess. It didn’t help that dean WAS very jealous and controlling. I understand why he was jealous, but he also ALWAYS yelled at her before giving her a chance to explain things, and he even made her cry and feel uncomfortable multiple times over things that weren’t her fault. And I can understand why she never wanted to break up with dean even though she knew she had feelings for Jess- because Dean was her first relationship so she felt sentimental over it because Dean was the very first person to like Rory romantically. I know Rory made very questionable choices over Dean and Jess, but I feel as if everyone’s always expected her to be a perfect girl who never makes mistakes. If people don’t make mistakes, they’d never learn from them, and Rory was only 16 so of course she wouldn’t understand how to deal with her emotions.
Yeah I agree. I understand her actions here, and even I guess with Dean the second time (she seemed very immature/stunted for a 19 year old). I just wish they hadn't continued to make her that way in the revival when she was in her 30s.
You read my mind. Everyone makes mistakes. But that was why I liked GG so much because none of the characters were "perfect". They all had flaws and made bad judgements sometimes. I'm just sad that Rory never actually learned from her mistakes even when she grew up. Granted it's a fictional show and a fictional character, but she's like what 30 something and she goes on to have an affair with another engaged man? I mean come on she did that when she was 16 and look how it turned out. I'm mad that the showrunners made her have such bad character development.
Rory should have just ended things with Dean but she was just a child she thought she still loved Dean however when Jess came in the picture it was clear they were attracted to each other and they were very compatible..
Unfortunately I think Lorelai sort of budding in and sharing with Rory what a great guy Dean is and how bad Jess is kind of contributed to Rory not breaking it off with Dean sooner
I don't see what's so wrong with Dean being upset about losing Rory and this is so heart breaking watch like she literally broke his heart and just to think that they were suppose to be in it for the endgame and this was so stupid how they're relationship ended and you guys honestly thought it was dumb and werid how he's so close to her mother like how??
who cares what my name is while I agree dean had a right to keep an eye out for Rory when I came to Jess I think it was his biggest downfall when it came to their relationship. Rory was naive when it came to Jess’s intentions but dean constantly making a big deal out of every interaction with him drove the small wedge between dean and Rory that jess needed to slide in. The natural chemistry was already there between Rory and Jess and dean basically handed Rory on a silver platter.
@@kylie9070 but he clung onto her lol. Dean was fully aware that she liked Jess and clung onto that relationship for what felt like an additional 6 months. well maybe dean shouldve broken up with rory right when he realised that rory liked jess. but instead he didnt want to admit that he lost to jess ( who in my opinion is the better fit for rory in all ways) and plus he wanted to keep controlling her.
everyone's saying that they feel bad for dean and to an extent i agree but maybe dean shouldn't be so obsessive and pushy all the time. like wasn't this the episode where he called her 14 times? all that being said rory should've left dean the moment she started falling for jess
Dean could be a big jerk at times and I do think Rory and Jess were better together, but she should’ve broken things of w/ Dean when she knew she liked Jess instead of lying and cheating.
I'm not a fan of Dean but this is sad :(
I really do feel bad for Dean here, but I still think he was possessive and selfish overall.
Also a little emotionally abusive. He did what he did out of love but expecting her to say I love you 3 months into her first relationship at 16 and breaking up with her when she can't say it back, that's just messed up
