    Last week I received my UJK Part Guide System from Lee Valley. Thank you Peter for designing this system. It is more impressive in the aluminum than on UA-cam :-). I have now used it for making a few others jigs than what it was intended. The Parf Guide System turns out to be a great tool for creating modular systems in the shop.

      Hi David, Brilliant. Do not forget to use a little oil on the shaft of the 20 mm cutter and also tighten the drill chuck well on that 20 mm cutter to avoid scoring the shaft. Good luck and please let me know how you get on. Peter

      New Brit Workshop Hello Peter, I have purchased the parf guide system but I would like to know your thoughts about drilling thru laminates. I would like to use laminated tops but I am not sure if the cutter would become dull very quickly and due to the unique shaft for the UJK cutter I am hesitant to abuse it as a replacement will be difficult to get in Australia. Your thoughts and options would be much appreciated.

    Peter, you have put together a great series of videos on the Perf Guide system. Nevertheless I have found it difficult to part with the money for it. For those of your viewers who are in the same boat and are waiting to be convinced: I received mine a few days ago. Buy it and use it and you'll be convinced!

      Initially I agreed with you Itz, but when you think about it, if you look at the amount of precision engineering in it and the fact it will probably last a lifetime, I'm actually amazed it's so cheap really. Beautifully designed Peter. Just ordered a couple, for the exact reason shown in this video. Was always a bit disappointed in the Kapex's lack of trenching depth in an other wise magnificent saw.

    I got the UJK rail clips a few weeks ago and they are really clever. They sure have made cutting a lot easier. For cumbersome cuts the track could be nudged out of alignment if I wasn't careful. I'm not having that problem any more.

    Peter you must be so proud of your inventions and rightly so. Well done.
    When you start something you never know where it goes, I refer to the UJK clips for the Parf Dogs. What a clever addition. I haven't seen them as I am not a fan of Axminster's web site, which leads me nicely on to another point. I am sure like many, I really miss the annual catalogue which had reached near legendary status in the woodworking world.
    How can we persuade the accountants at Axminster to bring it back?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  7 років тому

      Hi Harvey, Many thanks for the kind words. The UJK Rail Clips are an Axminster design hence they do not have the "Parf" name. I too wish that catalogue would come back as you can browse by category and related items without having to think about flicking here and finding your way back there. I will put some pressure on them and see what happens. Peter

    Just opened up the package. I ended up with three pairs of bench dogs and two pairs of Park dogs. It must have ended up in my order after all my failed attempts. No problem though, I'm sure they'll come in handy. 😀

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 років тому

      Hi David, I have just sent an email to the Axminster Export people whom I contacted when you first sent me a message. Do not worry about the extra dogs. Strangely it happened to me when Lee Valley started making them and they sent me one set free of charge. I then ordered (and paid for) a second set of each and ended with two extra sets of each. I find the extra ones very useful as I keep some permanently at my track saw cutting station and others in (or on) my mobile bench. I am now looking to a clever chap like you to come up with new ideas for things involving benches like the MFT3 and Parf Dogs - I mention this in my latest Workshop Notes video. Peter

    Ah, the clips. They look perfect. I'm quite careless and check my rail about forty times before cutting in case I've knocked it out slightly. I'll be buying those clips in short order. Is the stop collar available separately? If not, I'm sure I can find one easy enough.
    One other thing... Stuff is usually more expensive over here in the UK, so I was checking how much the PGS is in the US (so I can either sulk or gloat!)). However, on searching LV I couldn't find any sign of the PGS on their website. I would have thought you only want to announce stocking it in the US once people can actually find it on LV.

      You will be able to find it very soon as they have to finish the technical stuff. I have seen the provisional entry. I am not sure if the stop collar is available yet as an individual item but I will suggest to Axminster that it would be a good idea. Cheers. Peter

    Hi Peter, Thanks for your terrific videos they have been exceptionally helpful and inspirational. I would appreciate your feedback on using the 20mm cutter on laminate (0.7mm Formica) on 18mm MDF. Should I be concerned about excessive wear or is the cutter robust enough to do a few new tops. The parf guide system/ cutter is quite bespoke and as I am in Australia getting replacements is often painful. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  7 років тому

      Hi Paul, I have had an almost exact same question just a couple of weeks ago. The Formica will dull the cutter as it is a quite abrasive material. However, for just two bench tops it should survive but there are some precautions. First, you will need to have the lower side of the MDF covered in Formica as well otherwise the top will distort. Drill slowly with not too much pressure when going through Formica on the top surface. Avoiding breakout underneath will be tricky. You could have a sacrificial piece of plain MDF under the top to improve matters. Once you feel you are at the lower Formica reduce the downward pressure on the drill. After each hole check that the drill is not overheating (it will smell !) and ensure that there is no waste on it before you start the next cut. Be prepared to have to buy a new cutter after completing this project - hopefully an Australian dealer will be established sometime later this year which will help. Peter

      Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Yes that was probably my email a few weeks ago, I was not quite sure the email got thru. I will contact Axminster about the shipping cost of a possible replacement cutter (centrotec version and some rail clips). It feels more trouble than it is worth but as I just received the sheet of 16mm with 2 faces of laminate I may proceed. Thanks again for your assistance in this matter and all your hard work and education with New Brit Workshop.

    I received my system this weekend. Here is my observation. The materials seem to be made of very good quality. Couple of issues that I have had. Two of the 3mm pins will not fit in the steel ruler. The holes for the small 20mm part dogs are not the same size. Of the two part dogs. One will fit in only one of the parf dog holes. I am not sure if it is the orange coating or the tolerance on the parf dogs or the tolerance on the main unit. One of the parf dogs went in 1/3 way and got stuck. Had it stuck on my work bench for better part an hour as I didn't want to bend the main unit. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue.

    Dear Peter, congratulations on the development of such a fine system. I will probably purchase from Lee Valley, and have it delivered to Australia.
    I would also like to use this system ti locate my bench dog holes. Is there a 19mm cutter available that could do this as well?
    Thanks for your excellent videos as well.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 років тому

      Hi Michael, No there are no 19 mm cutters available as it would not allow you to make a complete array of holes. You can do every other hole with any high quality cutter that has a 10 mm ground shaft (these are only made to order and the emphasis is on a "ground shaft"). After that initial work you need to use the smaller Parf Dogs to locate the 20 mm Guide Block using the holes already drilled. If your holes are 19 mm diameter then the small Parf Dogs will not fit in them and so you end up only being able to do that initial set of every other hole. I know that there are a lot of legacy 19 mm dogs around but the demand is for 20 mm holes. There are a lot of other products (I am developing more right now) that will be 20 mm based. Peter

    • @Mr911OB
      @Mr911OB 8 років тому

      New Brit Workshop Thanks Peter, understood. Took me a bit of thinking about every other hole, but then remembered your video. I might use some electrical tape to enlarge my 19mm posts. Thanks

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  7 років тому

      Hi Erik, Many thanks - I understand. The key to putting any track into a table with a pattern of 20 mm holes is to ensure that the track is put in parallel to a row or column. This can be achieved very easily by using a pair of Parf Dogs and a straight edge held against them. A router can then be used, against the straight edge, to create the channel for the track. The straight edge could be anything from a Festool Guide Rail to a parallel sided piece of wood or metal. I hope that this helps. Peter

    Peter, as good as festool products are, even if I was a billionaire on principle I would not buy their products because they are over priced. £1000 for their latest hand power tool that does nothing but cut an oblong hole/slot! This is madness. Yes it's a great well thought out well engineered power tool but still not worth that amount of money. I would get so much more satisfaction out of making a router jig or two and do exactly the same thing for a tenth of the cost.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 років тому

      Hi Paul, I understand but there are many busy professionals who value the adage "time is money" and they need reliable tools that are quick to set up, have interchangeable components and do a great job. I agree that they are expensive and beyond the reach of many in the DIY sector. I love jig making and it is often the best part of a project. Peter

    • @pgtips4240
      @pgtips4240 8 років тому

      Ok, for the domino tool I can accept that but there are no such speed advantages in their jig saw, routers, plunge track saw, mitre saws, dust extraction, etc etc. I suppose if one tool perhaps is worth it purely on the basis of maximising productivity in a fast paced professional environment then it would be the domino jointer. Other than that, the other tools I mentioned have plenty other more competitive alternatives professional or not.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 років тому +2

      Hi Paul, Yes there are alternatives and it is all down to personal choice. I have spoken to many busy tradesmen using their less expensive tools and when asked about Festool they almost all said that they would buy some of the kit if they could afford it. Several would show me their one or two bits of prized Festool kit. Others would show me a Maffel or Lamello and they all seem to like defending their buying choices. I am glad that we are all different as it makes the world a far more interesting place. Peter
