  • The pre-cast pickup is a simple motion that lifts some (or all) of the fly line off the water and gets the leader moving. It’s an elegant solution to a common problem.
    When the dry fly drift is over, simply activate the line and get it moving before starting the backcast. The motion of the pre-cast pickup breaks the hold of surface tension. And that’s the key. Once the surface lets go of the line, it is easily lifted off the water with minimal disturbance . . .

    Very cool! I love learning new things I can actually use out on the water, been struggling with that recently, I will definitely be giving that a try! This is why I watch these videos not just to watch some other guy fish! Thanks again 👍

    Thank you for another great educational video. As someone who doesn't fish dries well as they are intimidating and here PA the best trout fishing comes on a dry. I'll have to practice this, in hopes it stops me from spooking every fish in the water.

    So glad you did this video. Always wondered what the heck that little Zoro move was, right before your backcast. Drove me nuts trying to understand what you were doing. All makes sense now. Another great vid, Dom, thanks.

    Listen to all your pod casts and that’s how I heard about you guys!
    For Dom- I’m a new fly fisherman no one in my family or any of my friends do it. I wanted to mess around one day and pick up a cheap start kit. Well some how I between a few hours watching the older fisherman while just hiking up stream trails and UA-cam and a few books I was able to bet my first trout. It was small but I was “Troutbitten”! Now a major question I haven’t found a ton of material or answers on is how much of fly fishing northeast streams is sight fishing and how much is just hitting good spots? I feel like I should see more trout in the water but most of my catches are just casting at “good” locations. A full podcast on sight fishing vs “hole” fishing would be fantastic!

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  Рік тому +1

      Great question. Trout fishing, in most places, is far more about hitting the good spots rather than seeing the fish. Trout are great at hiding their presence.
      Cheers.

    The pick up after a drift baffled me for 2 years since I started…. I have been told “oh just strip back some line…lift, false casts a couple times and send it” man….do you know how many dries I’ve made streamers 😂

    It almost looks like a wiggle cast lift and go method. It sure shows why your the pro and the rest of us are students. First time i tried it i had to call my buddy to come down stream and untangle my body that was wrapped like a straight jacket in fly line. Only kidding. Thanks for the tip especially in difficult low current spooky trout water.

      Right on. People probably have other good names for it too. I use a wiggle sometimes, but don't forget the mend and go and the roll and go too. I honestly don't think about it much. Just get the line moving. Then make the actual cast. It comes pretty natural, given a few hours of trying it out.
      Cheers!

    I was always told to do a mini roll cast when fishing upstream to pickup my flies. It makes a loud sound and the water is working against you. I even will do a quick circle cast on my first forward cast into my back cast so I can cast at any angle.

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  2 роки тому +1

      Right on. That's pretty much what I'm showing here. But there's no loud sound. The line and leader just lift. And you can do it with a roll, a wiggle or a mend.
      Cheers.

    Dom, do you still enjoy a 10’ 4wt for fishing dries? Can you still be accurate ? Why not a 5 wt

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  Рік тому

      Of course! Accuracy had nothing to do with the weight of the rod. It's up to the angler.

  • @boneheadjunkies7379
    @boneheadjunkies7379 Рік тому +1

    What weight fly line do you use on the sage trout?

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  Рік тому +1

      All depends on the rod. If the rod is a 4 weight, then that's what I have on the reel. Five with a five. Six with a six, etc.

      Yeah, I guess I've been doing that since I was I kid. Just use if for drying things off: hands, flies, etc.

    Can I use the mono rig with a dry fly or do you prefer the Harvey rig?

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  2 роки тому +2

      Dries on the Mono Rig is kind of a specialized tactic. It's excellent in some situations. Here's more, in a Troutbitten article:

    Not knowing how to pick my line caused me to accidentally send my flies at my guide on the Green River multiple times :( it pains me to admit, but it was during second year of fly fishing.
