Red envelopes - for giving abundance to another (not only to next generation, but also from Boss/Managers to employees), for celebration (weddings, birthdays, shop opening, etc), and for gratitude/appreciation/thanks/giving blessings.
In Singapore, only married people give angpao. Not married, will receive :) So Phil will need to give & your baby will receive 😇 But even if we're not married, we'll still give our parents and the older Gen

I thought wow Phil is giving some serious cash, nope I should have known better. =P But the amount do play a significance also, like not giving something with 4 in it. I'm also like Phil when receiving the red envelope. I usually just put them with the other ones from previous years. Sadly the last one I got was the beginning of 2020, my mom past away later that year to COVID and that was the end of that tradition. the CNY was always my holidays season.

In Singapore, different families also do it differently. Traditionally you only start giving out red packets after you get married. However some families start giving out when they start earning money. Interestingly I think this was influenced by the Malay tradition in Singapore. In Singapore for Malay new year children get green packets from relatives that have started working. Also after we get married we start to give red packets to our parents.
I mean my community has never been super wealthy, but I am always grateful if anyone had the thought to give red envelopes or even a fake red envelope is fine... I just didn't understand the rich and prosperity feel/generosity from the elders from watching this video. I think usually a rule I follow is if you're working or earning a wage, you should be giving a red envelope to the younger generation... I work minimum wage myself, and I definitely work/save enough in preparation to give for the New Years. Even if it'll be props/fake, I'd rather watch a video broadcasting the generosity of the elders - but I guess that's the video on the main Wongfu page was about.
