I’ve often wondered the same thing. When I invite people over for dinner (which I did in my 20s and 30s until I gave up) it’s actually a proper dinner. Great music. I expect civilized, cultured, conversation. But people want to crack a beer and make suggestions how to make the food more common. And they dress like frat drunks. Obnoxious.

Sigh. My mother used to have these and I remember all of the ladies looking so shiny and elegant. I’d do my rounds then get sent to bed. When they all went into the family room where the stereo and bar was, I’d sneak out of bed and grab some cake. Now we just meet at Applebee’s in jeans.

Loved Edith Head's remark." Dresses should be tight enough to show you're a woman; but, loose enough to show you're a lady." She designed shoes for Airline hostesses when they looked smart and beautifully dressed.

I lived around the most elegant black women in my family and in the neighborhood during the 1960s who were dress as elegantly and were equally graceful and well bred. I knew many who likes in the New York and New Jersey area.
My grandmother would go and get her furs out of storage in New York and store some of her jewelry at Tiffany's. In fact I went with her get some of her jewelry once and she checked to see if they exchanged her diamond in one of her rings for a lesser diamond. They did. She went home and told my grandfather. He went to New York mad a fuss and moved her jewelry. He came back with a diamond bracelet as a gift.

northernsoutherngirl, [ What a GREAT screen name; I was born in Brooklyn, NY yet my parents , grandparents were born in Roanoke, VA...guess I am also a "Northern/Southern girl, lol ] . I Recall the African American "seamstress" [ imagine using the term "seamstress" for a white designer] , Ann Lowe [ As an African American female, I hate that Ms. Lowe wasn't given her proper title and respect as a designer and couturier, who made Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress and the dresses of all her bridesmaids at her 1953, Rhode Island Wedding, the social event of the wealthy and famous, for the season. I read a long time ago that when Ann Lowe came to deliver the dresses for the Kennedy wedding, she was told to come in "through the servants entrance". Ann Lowe, held her head high, and told the person charged with setting up for the wedding, "that if I am not allowed through the front door, ALL of these dresses will not be delivered". Here is a quote from an Elle Magazine article regarding Ann Lowe: " She faced constant racial discrimination while working for America's most elite families, including the du Ponts, the Roosevelts, the Rockefellers, and, of course, the Kennedys." She never received the credit and recognition she deserved for creating some of the most elegant gowns and dresses of her time. Here is the article

Actually this used to be a thing back in the 60s and 70s at the honeymoon resorts in the pocono mountains. You would have 1 of these in your honeymoon suite And if I'm not mistaken they would make bubbles like a jacuzzi. A lot of the suites also had full size swimming pools in them. The thanking behind this was when you were on your honeymoon. You could just order room service and never have to leave your suite and do whatever you wanted in privacy. You can still see some ruins of them on UA-cam channels. Oh and I forgot they also had large heart shaped whirlpool bathtubs too. I had my honeymoon in the outback of Australia. We stayed in a tent. The 1st night we were right on the ocean on the beach. Nobody was around for 40 miles at least. We were way out in the outback! When all of the sudden crabs by the thousands if not 10s of thousands( these things were almost as big as the king crab)
They ran on top of our tent going inland, our tent collapsed. With us still inside! This went on for a good 10 to15 minutes. Then we started hearing noises. We heard what we thought was a baby crying. And we heard something growl. So we started talking about the Australian bigfoot. We were still in our collapsed tent when this all happened. I would say about an hour later we still haven't left our collapsed tent. When guess what came running back the other direction into the ocean? That's right about 1,000,000 giant crabs. When we wore up the next morning we saw a heard of goats. And they where making little sounds. That kind of sounded like a baby crying. We never did see bigfoot either. But we did see a lot of crabs. Memories!

Shirley Mc Laine had such a cute figure, and she was yet another woman entertainer who could wear the heck out of some clothes. She could wear a burlap sack, and create a demand for it the very next day. Hollywood did not dress her this elaborately too often. I am so glad she got a chance to strut her stuff. She wore every single costume in this movie well. Edith Head was a genius. The first time I laid eyes on her clothes I was in love. Classic movies such as these taught me that your hairstyle should compliment your outfit. Kudos to the stylist who did the beautifully elaborate hair designs.

Long before the days of cable, Netflix, etc. there were dozens of local syndicated TV stations and this used to play on TV matinees a lot in my youth. We'd always bark at the screen what our favorite Edith Head costumes were. Edith Head was sinfully genius. I'm still fond of the dress at 2:07 in the pewter sequins that ends with MacLaine popping onto the piano to show those gorgeous legs. The almost naked creation at the end is no slouch, either.

Edith Head got her job by taking everybody's work from an art class and telling the studio it was her own. She won Oscar's but her team played a huge part in what was designed. Her last Oscar was for 'The Sting,' one newspaper said "congratulations to Edith Head on winning an Oscar for remembering what people wore when she started her career.' They knew another designer had done the work.
