i heard a funny story about Mark Knopfer's soundtrack work. when he did Local Hero and Cal they were grand compositions where he didn't have to worry about the other memebers of Dire Straits being given parts to play. Knopfler had to be told after he finished that movie music is short themes not full length compositions with big production.
Yes, this IS Mark`s work 100 % This tune is called Wild Theme. He wrote all the music to the film "Local Hero" and this "wild theme" was only one of many great pieces which all was created and made by Mark Knopfler !
You have been one of the few people that mentioned magical realism about this film... you're spot on! There is an other-worldliness about it that cannot be explained.!
The instrumental was composed by Mark Knopfler as part of his entire soundtrack for the movie called "Local Hero". The soundtrack album is excellent, with a variety of styles both acoustic and electric guitar. The film itself is also great, a very under-rated movie well worth watching with its combination of humor and serious messages.
It's from his score from the movie "Local Hero" as has been previously said but, the film was set in Scotland with a predominantly Scottish cast so the music has a western Scottish & western Isles lilt to the score especially this tune. Mark, growing up in NE England around Newcastle upon Tyne the Northumbrian & Scottish folk music has similar features & tones so this must have been a walk back in .music history for him & a taking this music forward in history with his take on the natural scales of the musical styles. This ending up with a musical glide through the highlands, Isles & lowlands of the greatest & most beautiful small country on earth. Now you see why he is the master & why the music is so poignantly beautifully written & executed. Alba gu Brath!
Mark at his best. Raw, soulful, emotional, powerful, perfection. He's not the greatest guitarist on earth, but no one has all of the elements that he displays. Besides, once you're at his level the best is purely subjective, irrespective of one's style He is however my favourite guitarist of all time.
Yes, and it is not a Dire Straits' piece of music! I think Local Hero, written and directed by Bill Forsyth, still is a funny movie with a very up-to-date environmental theme indeed. Definately worth watching. 🙏
From the sound track Local Hero, "Wild Theme" is the 2nd tune on the album, which features similar melodic arrangements seen in songs "Whistle Theme," and "Smooching," and capped off with his Going Home song which was a radio hit. Knopfler did a string of sound tracks in the 80s and 90s, including for the Princess Bride, and Cal, which is among my favorites. Check them out, Whistle Theme is a gem of a little refrain, and is classic melodic Knopfler.
Actually, this is Wild Theme from the Local Hero film (Knopfler wrote the score). Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler used to end their shows with the another song called Going Home, which is more electric (sax, guitars…). But Wild Theme was used in 1992 during the On Every Steet Tour and in 2005 during the Shangri-La Tour. I would recommend to listen to Going Home Alchemy Live version. And also to check out the 2024 10 minute, charity release of the song recorded with 70 renowned music’s and guitarists such as J. Beck, Gilmour, Clapton, Slash, Satriani, Vai, Bonamassa, Urban, Morello, Iommy, Frampton, Lukather…
The film 'Local Hero' was set around the beauty of the Isles of Scotland and Mark composed the music to set a scene depicting the magnificent sea and landscape of that area. He did it justice...Moving!
His guitar doesn’t just play a melody or a “sound”. It tells a whole story only by playing the music. Feelings, memories, laughters and tears. MK is able to put all this in his instrument and he makes you feel his story. That’s why I hate it when people try to play his songs or (worse!) his guitar solos : they just play the notes, not the emotion. They don’t feel the story and that’s why they’re un able to tell it through the music they’re playing.
Yes, ‘Going Home’ traditionally ended DS concerts from its existence in 1984? through to this last/late concern in their final tour for the On Every Street album in 1991/92. This variant, ‘Wild Theme’ is just guitar & keyboards, no bass, rhythm or drums, both from the album ‘Local Hero’ which is the soundtrack to a quirky-funny movie of the same name, well worth a watch!
Mark Knopfler’s new special recording of his anthemic ‘Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)’, features an unprecedented line-up of some of the greatest guitarists in history. ‘Legendary’ does not begin to cover it - David Gilmour to Ronnie Wood, Slash to Eric Clapton, Sting to Joan Armatrading, Bruce Springsteen to Pete Townshend, Nile Rodgers to Joan Jett, Brian May to Tony Iommi, Joe Walsh, Sam Fender and many more jaw dropping names. And, in a great honour, the track opens with Jeff Beck’s final recording. ua-cam.com/video/zBGm7gJtSZE/v-deo.html
Great observation. Mark has got really long fingers, including his thumbs and so does his oldest daughter, by the way. (😊He's also got really big feet. Size UK: 12, EU: 46. Trivial, but it's true! 😅👞)
It’s been a traditional Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler encore for years going back to 1983. Some times in a stripped back version like this others like from his solo tour in 2019 with his full 10 piece band. It’s really special.
I've seen Mark knopfler 13 times and he's always ending off with this, but different versions this starts off as going home but turns into wild theme which is a toned down version, then there's an encore which gradually builds up with drums guitar solo ending, Amazomg stuff when your there 🥺
This is one part of the complete version, where towards the end there is a faster, more dynamic rhythm and the saxophone is also included in the performance. I recommend that you watch the entire recording (preferably the studio version) Goin' home -Local Hero.
I knew you would enjoy this. As others have said, this track is from Mark's debut film soundtrack for the film Local Hero. The whole soundtrack is beautiful. This is the stripped-down track called Wild Theme, but there is the full band performance called Going Home, which is amazing too. This is about the most beautiful guitar instrumental you could hear from anyone, but this has Mark Knopfler written all over it. To me, it proves why Mark is above most other players, the melodic approach, his touch, tone, and feel of it is way more impressive than playing really fast all the time. Like Mike Oldfield says, "The mark of a good musician is to play one note and mean it"
So good to see you back with the guitar 🎸. This track is Going Home and will accompany me on my final journey. You only got half the song with this version. It's so very beautiful ❤
I completely agree! 👍 Especially recommend the concert in Basel '92. The groove there is just unbeatable. (I heard it in Stockholm '92, but that one isn't available I'm afraid.)
This is so damn beautiful my eyes get wet every time. This music is all beauty and emotions. Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
It is indeed composed by Mark Knopfler, specifically for a major motion picture soundtrack. The film is called "Local Hero" and is a quirky but very heartwarming story, set in northern Scotland. Mark draws on old Scottish folk melodies and styles to craft this tune which is both called "Wild Theme" and "Going Home". It is so beautiful and moving that many people elect to have it played at their funeral. To hear the original, married with incredible images of Northern Scotland watch the following: ua-cam.com/video/6pR1cVgk7Is/v-deo.html ( Going Home-Wild Theme- from "Local Hero " motion picture- Mark Knopfler ) Your analysis of the music is bang on!
Another lovely insightful reaction thank you. Mark wrote 9 movie soundtracks between 1983 & 2016, i.e. Local Hero; Cal, Comfort & Joy; The Princess Bride; Last Exit to Brooklyn; Wag the Dog; Metroland; A Shot at Glory; & Altamira. There is a beautiful diversity to the music on these albums that, for me, place MK firmly in the realms of magical musician, a subtle step above plain old ‘genius’. My personal favourite tracks are on ‘Local Hero’; ‘Last Exit to Brooklyn’; ‘A Shot at Glory’; ‘Local Hero’; ‘The Princess Bride’. I❤MK & everything in his rich musical legacy so far.

Nope, Local Hero has the same basis and melody, but ‘Wild Theme’ from the same Local Hero album is just guitar and keyboards, no bass or drums, much gentler.
@@techydudeGlad you put that right! Some people seem unable to keep these two apart. Going Home being the up tempo version, at the very end of the movie with saxophone. (🎸On some occasions live, with Hank Marvin.)

One of my all-time favorite movies - a unique mix of comedy, wistfulness, and magical realism - and Knopfoer’s score evokes all of that beautifully.
