  • I did fish some channel cats exclusively in Manitoba last week as you may have watched in my previous video, but I also explored the Red downstream and fished 3 other spots aside from Lockport. Here I catch a variety of fish including a new species for me! Check it out!

    In the Fall you'd catch Sauger and Walleye.

      I also fished Netley Creek in this video. It was Middle of summer and super hot. The fish that were in there were small and not really feeding. Spring and fall is a different story here, when the runs are going strong. Cheers

    If you throw drum on ice they're actually pretty tasty grilled, can't string them up or anything just from the hook to ice until you're ready to cook. Definitely worth a try.

      Maybe next time I catch them. These were the first I've ever caught, and very small. The one I caught in Netley was a little bigger. I bet they taste pretty good early in the year when water is still cold.

      @@differentfins I've eaten them through mid summer, they better earlier on but they get kept frequently because they love to swallow hooks before you ever feel them on.

      @@RedRiverWilds I can imagine. I didn't but hook any of these but the take was very light. That's why I was surprised when that nice catfish took, a 34" catfish feels a lot different than a 10" drum. I want set up for cats at all.

      @@differentfins absolutely, when I'm fishing for cats I use a medium heavy surf rod for the extra leverage and set it in a holder frequently so a drum take might feel more like the current on the line or a slight bump if it's a bigger one which definitely gets the rod in the hands but they can swallow surprisingly large hooks for their mouth size and not even be detected through graphite.

      Thanks. I plan of it, if I can get back to Manitoba. I live in NWO and have been waiting for the border restrictions to lift. My wife is from The Pas and there is a lot of ice fishing I want to try in the northern region as well.

    Any luck with lures ? Spinners? Etc.. or is bait a must?

    • @differentfins
      @differentfins  2 роки тому

      I never tried lures there in summer. There are some fish in there that would take lures, mostly pike but i have those back home. I was soaking bait trying to catch fish, possibly new species, I don't have in NW Ontario. I was casting jigs and Gulp minnows at Lockport last October and caught a bunch of saugers. Fall would be the best time to throw lures. In the spring the river is very muddy from runoff and summer time most of the fish are sluggish and not feeding aggressively.

      Haha yes, I was still learning how to edit videos when made this one, I still consider myself a rookie but videos have gotten better I believe. My latest video is a visit back to Red River. Caught a couple nice cats again. Cheers
