I have a good friend who face planted on a bike ride. It was catastrophic. She has metal plates in her head. Had reconstruction surgery. After the accident, her little boy wouldn’t ride a bike again because mom wasn’t riding anymore. She got back on a bike and now does triathlons. She even travels with her bike and asks the hotels about the local areas where she can train. Don’t let an accident stop you from what you are passionate about. It can be a difficult barrier to break, but with time everything heals. Best of luck in your recovery. I’ve learned a lot from you in my short time following (a year). I’d like to keep hearing and learning from you.
Thanks Marty, for sharing your testimony. I am happy you won’t exit the EUC scene. You have played a pivotal role in my EUC journey. I am sure the October 14 So Cal Tour will be difficult for you not to participate in, but it would be neat if you could ride the infamous Begode Extreme Bull K6. You would be able to lead the pack with that! I am not sure if Begode will read my comment, but I hope they contribute to the Marty fund, because your channel has been a free advertisement for Begode. Thanks Again
So sad you got injured. I am so sorry for all you will go through but celebrate your spirit. You are made of hard wood. I am sure you will be back sooner than expected. Wish you the best Marty.
Broke my left wrist and my right shoulder a in a crash couple years ago. I was literally crippled in both arms. I broke down and cried when the realization that I couldn't put myself or my wife through an extreme injury and that I wasn't able to ride anymore. I miss it very much and still have dreams where I'm riding. Your advice to people without insurance is valid. Heal up fast, brother. I still enjoy your content.
Thanks for sharing. When I had a bad accident on a MC (hit by car), I took a long break, but ended up getting a new bike a few years later. It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done. :)
I'm sorry to see you have had this fall i started riding euc's when I retired age 65 that was 8 years ago I've broken 6 ribs and my collarbone in that time but still ride most days if the weather permits living in the uk have a speedy recovery
Marty, you truely are the Godfather of EUC information. Wishing you a speedy recovery & hope your wife isnt negatives impacted. I always appreciate your perspective & glad you will continue to make content. Keep stricing & know you have tons of supporters rooting for your return!!
Hey Marty, my heart goes out to you being laid up like this. You gave a lot of tough love in this video toward the community and I agree with you. After riding non-stop for about three-and-a-half years I hurt my knee and haven't been able to ride for 4 months. During this time off I've been able to spend a lot more time with my wife and sons and looking back on it I realized I was being selfish by spending so much time riding and driving to places to go riding every single weekend. Since my injury I've been spending all of my time of them as they are getting older and it was actually a blessing to get me to stop riding so much and spend more time with them that I'll never be able to recoup. Best of luck with surgery today.
The same thing happened to me Marty. Several years ago, my MCM5 turned off during a ride. Fortunately I had just slowed down to walking pace. 1 minute earlier and it would have had been much worse. It turned on again and while I was walking it home it turned off again and never turned back on. It put me off riding for 6 months, but my mojo came back. I since have had a V11 and now an S22 Pro. I have been riding exactly as as long as you, but far fewer kilometres. I am also 62 and coincidentally, I broke my foot on Saturday. Ironically, I had just finished a 75km ride and I broke my foot getting out of a chair when my leg was asleep. Fortunately public health care here in Australia is great and I was fast tracked through ED, x-rayed, fitted with a special shoe and sent home without putting my hand in my pocket. Get well soon and look after yourself. We don't heal quite so quickly at our age. We have to keep riding though to fly the seniors' flag.
Thanks for the story 🙂 and bad luck with your chair/foot. Sounds like maybe it was “only” a fracture which is probably a much faster healing process. Good luck. 🙏
Pray for your speed recovery man... I watched all your videos.. and inspired me to get my first wheel back then .. now I have 3 wheels and still watching EUC review of yours.
Can’t believe I’m just seeing this man. Get well soon!! I remember after breaking my clavicle on a stupid electric skateboard I was ITCHING to get back out there.
Sorry to hear about your accident Marty. I hope you heal quickly and keep the spirit. This must be hard to take for a veteran and safe rider like you. Cheers!
Be courageous Marty, you are so friendly and humble, everybody loves you in the community.Looking forward to see the new videos made with old videos in sunny California
Wish you a speedy recovery 🙏. Supposedly cats purring, due to it's frequency helps heal bones among other things, some people say that is the source of their 9 lives stories. Have one next to your leg, who knows it might help.
Marty, so sad to hear this happened to you. I'm glad you're standing firm on never riding the assassin again; smart move. My family and I wish you a speedy recovery. Hope to see you on the tour!
Marty, you were a prime motivator in me getting into EUCs, and since i stumbled across your videos a year ago, I have bought my first wheel, and even begun working for/with EUC brands as a designer. Your insights and perspective has been an instrumental guide to me as it relates to designing more robust and compelling wheels for all experience levels. When we look back on this industry/sport/community a few years from now, you'll be able to take pride in the fact that you've influenced so many and so much with your passion and dedication to the electric unicycle community. Heal well and rest up, thanks for everything!!!!
Also, it's really odd to me that the manufacturers don't have a more robust test-bed platform for their wheels. I come from a background applying magnetic levitation to robotics for precise control systems, and I am shocked at how few QC steps are taken, how few redundancies are built into these wheels, and the overall lack of finish there is on the electronics. Unfortunately, this is kind of the nature of small batch electronic manufacturing - the volume is too low for better design testing before tapeout, design freeze etc.... And the volume is too high for real craftsmanship and granular sub-component and systemwide QA. Ideally a manufacturer will intentionally overstress and destroy a dozen or more wheels on a test-bed to break a wheel every which way they possibly can before greenlighting a design for batch one production, and batch one normally would go to insiders only to get real use data. We should not only expect this level of dilligence from manufacturers, we should demand it. I hope with increased base volumes, manufacturers will invest in producing fewer wheels with dramatically higher levels of fit & finish- inside and out.
Yes, if the volume of EUC’s keeps increasing hopefully there can be more money applied towards better safety protocols, testing, etc. I’m afraid it’s still too niche of a sport.
I'm glad that you were at least not in a lot of pain. I broke my ankle sliding into 1st base as a kid. Everyone clear out in the outfield heard it snap, and oh boy was there ever pain. I had to hobble home leaning on my friend, and every bounce was excruciating.
Right on Marty! You're gonna build some new bones and come out stronger than before. Looking forward to seeing all the condolence wheels everyone sent you while you were in recovery! :D
Ahhhh Marty so sorry to hear this you are the reason I got my first wheel. I broke my shoulder. On my MSP but as you say, you could keep doing stuff. I’m wishing you a speedy recover brother!
I remember hearing about your accident a year ago. I recently injured my ankle riding EUC in an extreme context (offroad on trails). You are absolutely right, it's an abysmal experience. I enjoy riding EUCs, but if I'm honest it's a big reality check to break something. I suspect I'll be giving up on the extreme riding at a minimum, and perhaps even further than that. It's so unbelievably debilitating to lose use of a leg - and what if the injury was worse?...
Lightning hit me few months back. Same fracture as yours Marty. As a matter of fact I found it easier to go back to riding as opposed to walking. Wish you a quick recovery!!
Hi Marty. I am a fan of yours. I really like your videos. I am 63 years old and I retire in 8 months. I am Basque, from the Basque Country in the north of Spain and I tell my wife that one day we have to go to California. Take care and recover soon. All the best
Hope to see you progress successfully through your surgery and make a swift recovery. I’m wearing motorcycle boots now after a much less severe foot strain; us 60 plus guys may need more protection but I hope to see you back on your wheels when you’re ready. No doubt going down messes with your head. All the best!
Friend, I wish you well and speedy recovery with no long term issues. Been there twice with shattered knee and wrist (all required two surgeries each for hardware in then out). The psychological factor and feel of future falls can haunt you. This too shall pass. Be patient. Good luck.
Thanks Marty for all great videos, I've been watching you for years and love your advice. Get healed asap, I'm sure everyone will miss you for the couple months you will be down (know I will).
So sorry for you Marty. Waiting to heal and going through the phase of not riding or doing other activities you love is so frustrating. Once you're all healed up though it'll seem like it went fast. Only after though sadly...
Heal up!! And don’t be hasty to ride again, down the road you’ll appreciate giving it enough time to heal fully, don’t want any more ankle problems.. I feel you on the pain of not riding, I’m without a wheel since the first week of July and I don’t get the commander mini I ordered until the end of September.. I feel like I just quit smoking but the feeling doesn’t seem to dissipate..
Marty, I just got into the riding euc's and have recently discovered all the great euc vets like you helping us noobs . Wishing you a very speedy recovery 🙏❤️ Hope to see you riding soon.
Among several things, I shattered my tibia and fibula, got a concussion, and fractured two vertebrae. I was hit by a truck on my Onewheel. I understand your pain. The things that got me through it was the desire to ride my Onewheel, skateboard, and learn EUC. I'm almost as old as you, and it's taken me about a year and a half to get back to were I was (board wise). I can now ride an EUC as well. Still can't run though. At least I'm still progressing.... Good luck on your recovery!
I am sorry to hear of your injury, I wish you a speedy recovery! I love all your reviews and care of the euc scene and all the wheels and modifications!
I have been riding for a long time as well. Not as long or as much as Marty, but I've been following his channel for at about 5 years. I've had 1 cutoff in many wheels and miles worth of riding and it was NOT a good experience. The wheel was Kingsong 16S and probably caused by battery too low, going too fast, and an encounter with a pothole. No broken bones, but I was feeling that one for about a year. There are a lot of loose wires and moving parts inside a wheel and it wouldn't take much for something to go wrong. In the case of the A2, it probably wasn't wiring and the root cause may never be known. Intermittent failures are frustrating because they are so difficult to root cause - and often, the cause is never found. Thank you for your years of service to the EUC community Marty. You bring up good points about the risks involved and the consequences of accidents. I've thought more than once about the wisdom of riding given my circumstances, but thus far, I continue to do it.
You are a legend, the time will go by quick and you’ll be riding again before ya know it. Glad you laugh about the whole thing, maybe raffle off an A2 for your tour
Thanks for the advice, Marty! There are many people who live risk-free , boring life and then they die anyway. I'll keep riding the EUC because it's too much fun, but I will never ride it if I don't have a health insurance after watching this video.
Glad you are still up to putting out videos even if from a wheelchair. It would be nice if an electrical engineer could postulate possible causes. You noticed metal shavings on a recent wheel. Ecodrift noticed solder splatter on copper motor winding, loose wires rubbing against motor covers and pinched motor leads on various teardowns. Denis Hagov mentioned the back of on/off switches on the Mten4 care ompletely unprotected from the elements. Perhaps something as simple as a drop of condensation producing a short was the cause. I suspect we will never know.
Sorry to hear your injury, wish you heal up soon. I must say it too funny you make ur joke on your thumbnail, it make me laugh but I am still feeling sorry for you 😂
Thanks for giving us the complete scoop Marty...as always. I was very sorry to hear of your accident. Nothing is scarier than the random cutout...except for apparently the random turn off. I hope your surgery went well. Keep up the good spirits.
Here in Finland we pay taxes from our salaries, depending on your income usually about 20-40%, this then finance the public services. Public services include public health services. When my father had major heart surgery I payed about 40 USD per hospital day. For ambulance an equal amount regardless of the distance it drives. Getting an appointment to a general practitioner is harder, but one visit within the NHS would be about 20USD. So we pay for the good of everybody from our salaries every single month. You can go to private healthcare also here in Finland, then you get faster service, but only the rich can afford that over here. But that’s just an explanation of our public service system. I thought it might be interesting to know as you kindly explained how it works in your own country. Back to the accident you had: I really feel your pain and hardship. I’m happy that you have a good wife and not having to work as a pensioner AND that you’re insured. The way you describe your family and how you help out in the EUC community I’ve seen on UA-cam, it’s clear you’re both knowledgeable and nice. So take care, get well soon! And you’ll be riding again one fine day.👍
thanks for the update and sorry for your break. I had my eye on the A2 since your vids I saw a month back wanting a better tire on asphalt. I will wait till they find out what went wrong before I put my order in. Lucky I live in BC where its free medical. I checked online and an ambulance is $80 can$ here. But Im still 68 and my bones dont heal as they use to. Lucky I do ride my T4 like an old man tho lol. I see a Scooter in your future
Thanks. I can guarantee that they are not doing any additional investigative work on the A2 🙂 it was a freak failure that will remain unsolved. Yeah, definitely prefer not to break anything at our age. Fortunately the odds are in your favor that you won't
I hope you regain full use of your ankle and you have a good recovery. Can't say you've given me any confidence in Begode's safety or engineering. It sure sucks to be immobilized for a while. Mobility is everything!
i feel your pain. Almost broke my ankle with the mten4 several months ago but it was due to human error. I had a bad habit of squatting excessively to dampen bumps and dips in the road. I found myself unable to stand up and recover when I was caught in the dip between the decline and incline of a street. Instead of falling off, as you normally would when you lose balance, the mten4 shifted and the weight of my entire body sank into my left ankle. It felt like my shins would explode. Didn't actually break anything, but I spent several weeks hobbling on crutches and coping with the swelling.
😞aww I have one of these coming tmrw as my first euc and now im hesitant.... already broken my ankle twice and leg once. the surgery's sucked, Im older now and dont want to be injured again. hope your recovery is fast.
Sorry to hear about your injury Marty heal up fast. One of the reasons I sold my EUC was the potential for an accident. Especially one like yours where nothing you did could have mitigated it or prevented it...other than not riding the wheel in the first place.
I had the wheel cut off without overpowering it with 2 gotways in a row That's a big part of what made me start telling everyone about their problems back then
Well on a positive note, now you'll have time to patch the hole in your Jacket. 😂😂😂😂😂Just teasin. Love and Well wishes for a quick, solid, smooth recovery Marty. Love how you dont let this get you down too much. Lookin forward to seeing what type of content you come up with for the time being, dont forget about us viewers! Lol Take care Marty 🤙🤙🤙Aloha.
Hi Marty. I had a head-on car crash and have been stuck in a wheelchair since October. I miss my original Master, but have my MCM4 in my rest home room to keep me company. I have not given up on electric Unicycles because I see people like us as pushing the limits of self-balancing for transport and space flight since many ideas stem from the down-to-earth basics. I pray your leg heals properly.
So sorry to hear this! Can't believe it was just while cruising your neighborhood and the wheel just failed. Good reminder to ride a new wheel very cautiously for a while to be sure it's not a dud. I hope for your speedy recovery 🙏
Do you think this would have prevented the injuries Marty has suffered? I’m with you in the sentiment 100%, but have to question whether the outcome might have been somehow different, or less serious.
Sorry to hear about this marty , get well soon , I don't ride euc anymore only because of the legality here in the UK but I do ride motorcycles.. accidents happen.. frustrating it was out of your control if I had to guess the wheel I'd guess a begode... anyway peace and keep positive
Hey Marty, greetings from Porto, Portugal! Just got recently in the EUC world ( got my V8F last week), and couldn't miss your channel. I just love the vibes from your videos. Hope you get well soon to get up on those wheels again. Thank you for the uploads. Keep it up! :) 👊
Marty, I hope you are healing well. I read you're using a walker. I really like your UA-cam videos. Not scripted like many videos. I live in Punta Gorda, Florida. I'm a 71 yo kid that works fulltime as a cyber engineer. I bought a 16S and a Begode Master. Learning on the 16S. I see from your videos you are a wood worker. My dad was a ceramic tile setter and wood worker. Wishing you well wishes. Janet McFaul
Marty forza! È solo questione di tempo e tornerai meglio di prima. Qualche mese di riposo e poi con le giuste protezioni per noi che siamo un po' vecchi si ritorna a veleggiare. Un caro saluto dall'Italia. A presto.
greatest fear ever, a random cut out. There is always a lingering fear this will happen to any other normal wheels too :(
Sending all the warmest wishes Marty! I hope you’ll begode soon!
Thanks so much Adam

heal up buddy, should be getting my A2 this week so fingers crossed
same here, kind of scared now though :|
It’s what keeps us feeling alive right lol good luck everybody!
We can just rig an EUC up to your wheelchair. Send it!
A buddy of mine broke his leg a couple months ago and he was pulling himself down the path with an electric skateboard lol
Marty, some great information here! Hope the surgery went smoothly!

You guys are the test pilots. Your pain is much apreciated by us riders. Your input probably saved a lot of us in the future.
Cheaper crash dummies for their prototypes seems more fitting.
@@privileguan9127 We will have to make them RC with weights or ride on tread mill.
Hope you recover well, and thanks for posting. This is why I don’t use spiked pedals. Sometimes not good to be so locked in
Hard to know if the spikes played a roll but I get your point.
Do you think spikes can be dangerous? Please explain to me
Sorry to hear about your accident Marty. I hope you heal quickly and keep the spirit. This must be hard to take for a veteran and safe rider like you. Cheers!

Excellent reality check for everyone. Thanks Marty. - Cheers from Mexico.
Speedy recovery Marty! Great to hear the tour is still on.

Thanks 🙂
Why wouldn't the thing go free wheel in loss of power ? Thx
So sorry to hear and I hope you have a speedy recovery. I am sure a broken ankle is a pain in the a$$.

I'm almost as old as you, and it's taken me about a year and a half to get back to were I was (board wise). I can now ride an EUC as well. Still can't run though. At least I'm still progressing.... Good luck on your recovery!
Thanks. It’s good to hear from people such as yourself who have been injured and got back on the horse 🙏
I am sorry to hear of your injury, I wish you a speedy recovery! I love all your reviews and care of the euc scene and all the wheels and modifications!
Best wishes on a speedy recovery. I can't wait to see you ride again. ❤
You will be fine. I have been through greater damage on my leg. You just need time to heal after the surgery. Wishing you well.
Can I suggest you still make content around the EUC world - maybe commentaries? It might help the process plus I miss your voice haha
Thanks 🙂
@@ElectricUnicycles ironically, I had a severe burn on him ankle on the weekend so am out of riding fora while as well :/
I have been riding for a long time as well.
Thanks for your story and thoughts 🙏
Wish you a speedy recovery mate.
You are a legend, the time will go by quick and you’ll be riding again before ya know it. Glad you laugh about the whole thing, maybe raffle off an A2 for your tour
Good idea regards the A2 😁
Thanks for the advice, Marty! There are many people who live risk-free , boring life and then they die anyway. I'll keep riding the EUC because it's too much fun, but I will never ride it if I don't have a health insurance after watching this video.
thanks for the update Marty. Sorry you got injured, best of recovery!
God speed to you Marty!
And you’ll be riding again one fine day.👍
Thanks for your perspective regards NHS, etc. I enjoyed the read 👍
thanks for the update and sorry for your break.
Love the explanation with the miniwheel XD best wishes marty.... speedy recovery!!! lets hope the a2 is revised!!!
Wishing you a speedy recovery Marty! Don’t ever stop doing the things you love, keep riding my man. Love you and your vids, keep on keeping on.
Get well soon, Marty!
😞aww I have one of these coming tmrw as my first euc and now im hesitant.... already broken my ankle twice and leg once. the surgery's sucked, Im older now and dont want to be injured again. hope your recovery is fast.
Thanks, and good luck. I can’t imagine breaking my ankle twice.
Looking good mr Marty! Keep the great healing going☺️🙏
Sorry to hear about your injury Marty heal up fast. One of the reasons I sold my EUC was the potential for an accident. Especially one like yours where nothing you did could have mitigated it or prevented it...other than not riding the wheel in the first place.
I had the wheel cut off without overpowering it with 2 gotways in a row
That's a big part of what made me start telling everyone about their problems back then
Well on a positive note, now you'll have time to patch the hole in your Jacket.
Good man.
Wow, so sorry to hear about your accident. October! That’s tough. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer for you 🙏
Get well soon)
So sorry to hear this! Can't believe it was just while cruising your neighborhood and the wheel just failed. Good reminder to ride a new wheel very cautiously for a while to be sure it's not a dud. I hope for your speedy recovery 🙏
Do you think this would have prevented the injuries Marty has suffered? I’m with you in the sentiment 100%, but have to question whether the outcome might have been somehow different, or less serious.
@freeforester1717 seems like no, but stressing caution anyway. Very unfortunate for the wheel to shut off and twist enough to break an ankle!
Bummer, best wishes man.
Sorry to hear about this marty , get well soon , I don't ride euc anymore only because of the legality here in the UK but I do ride motorcycles.. accidents happen.. frustrating it was out of your control if I had to guess the wheel I'd guess a begode... anyway peace and keep positive
Hope you get healed up soon!
Good luck with surgery tomorrow. Look forward to many more mountain rides with you in the future.
He's dead, Jim
I agree about needing health insurance for anyone riding EUC. Smart advice. Wish you the best.
Hey Marty, greetings from Porto, Portugal! Just got recently in the EUC world ( got my V8F last week), and couldn't miss your channel. I just love the vibes from your videos. Hope you get well soon to get up on those wheels again. Thank you for the uploads. Keep it up! :) 👊
Thank you 🙏
Marty, I hope you are healing well.
Thanks 🙏
@@ElectricUnicycles so big question is, would you buy an a2 from a reputable retailer now?
@@janetmcfaul2849 I am too biased against the A2 to offer an objective opinion. I will never ride an A2 again 🙂
I bought an a2 from eucdeals (alien rides) with street tire, will keep you posted
Get well soon
So much to say about this video!
Wellllll, I wish you be good soon! And I hope your surgery works fine!
Continue to be a good inspiration for us, man!
Marty forza! È solo questione di tempo e tornerai meglio di prima. Qualche mese di riposo e poi con le giuste protezioni per noi che siamo un po' vecchi si ritorna a veleggiare. Un caro saluto dall'Italia. A presto.
🙏
Get well dude!.. 💪
I hope all wheel manufacturers will concentrate more on safety quality, speedy recovery Marty ✊🏻
I wish you the best. Thanks for all of the amazing content!
