I am a 57 year old meteorologist, in South Louisiana. My whole life we would evacuate once a year on avg. We had 2 boats, 42 foot and 20 foot and would load the big boat with LOTS of stuff, lawnmower ice chest, cloths everything. The 42 would go 20 miles inland and tie up in a very small canal with large trees on each side. We did this EVERY YEAR it seemed like. We were good at it. The water would come up 10-15 feet but all our stuff was safe. Both boats are still running, they are each over 50 years old. (Aluminum). I strongly suggest, today you get that small boat on a trailer and drive it to Planet Fitness parking lot and leave the boat and truck there. Its over 13 foot elev. Then pack up your house in the big boat and head East. You can ride out the storm in some big trees tied off will all the rope you have. You have time, but your can't leave those boats there. Once everything is covered is 6 foot of water, you will not be able to move around at all and its far worse at night. You saw what can happen and this could be worse. I have a life time dealing with these storms, I hope you learn from my mistakes Eddie Weeks
as a long time Floridiain, spring line across the canal is brilliant. maybe put it higher up the palm tree. bury the anchors if you can. but give some slack to all the lines. assume your boat goes straight up 10'. then prepare to get the hell out of there. you cannot save the house from water/surge only get trapped by it.... and take your pets - they are permitted at the shelters...PS I survived Andrew - by luck, not skill.... so good luck... be safe
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs dude, your house may be damaged. you can't prevent that. but you can protect your loved ones. set up your GoPros to document the event and head east. I've seen people move to FL from up north and underestimate the power of a major hurricane for decades. and some of them are no longer with us because of it. I watched Andrew peel houses apart like a banana 10 miles inland. my neighbor had a 42' Sea Ray... blown through his living room. if you get the bad part of this, it will be like the worst thunderstorm you have ever experienced times 10, continuous, for 6-10 hours, with 6' of water inside your house washing it off the foundation with you inside it helpless because at that point there is no where to escape. I like Eddie's idea of loading up the boat and sailing inland also, though you may not have time at this point. God Bless and Good Luck.
You are one of our favorite Northerners. Common sense approach to your boating issues. We will be praying for your safety and watching for your next video update.
Stay safe. I'm off vets and surfside on the canal. All locked down. I'm about ten or 11 feet up so I'm praying Milton eases up. I'm out of town hoping to fly back Friday morning. Be praying for everyone in fl. As long as I see your videos during these next few days I know we're surviving.
Living here in the Caribbean, you get a real sense of the power of a hurricane. If it’s a cat 5 direct hit then, like Irma, nothing that you do to the boats in the water will make any difference. Hopefully Milton will lose some power and go a little further north away from you. If, by tomorrow it still looks ominous then finish your storm prep and then get out of there. You can’t do anything to “save the house and boats” once the storm hits. They can be replaced. Your priority is to keep Brigit and Matey safe, please don’t leave it too late to evacuate.
Great thorough prep work…heck, what more could you do?? Thanks for sharing it. Once the storm passes, as long as you guys are Ok,,,,everything else don’t matter👍. 🙏for yall.
My home is Venice, about 1.5 miles from the coast. The boat is in a rack. Flew out yesterday, as they are closing the Venice Airport as of the end of the day today. Hoping for the best in this situation. Best of luck to you!
Capt Tom, youve done probably as much as you can, not sure what is better, taking the boat out of the water or leaving it in the water, i have always been a fan of leaving it in the water just tying it well like you did. My Prayers are with you, again. Good Luck and be Safe, Take Care, Sir!
Hi Tommy this is Steve and Robin aboard Robin's Nest down here in South Naples at a marina called Port of the Islands, which is very protected. We are also making a lot of preparations and I think what you are doing is a great idea with the anchors. Good luck up there. We still might have another one following this called Nadine. This crap is for the birds, people are becoming hurricane shocked.
Thinking about you up here in Wisconsin. Hope you and the Mrs. stay safe. Really enjoy your videos so we’re crossing our fingers that the boats stay safe as well.
Hi from Long Island NY. Praying for u guys and some of my friends that live in FLA. We’ve got a 31 Formula PC and had looked at FLA as a retirement place to live one of these days. After seeing the stress u guys have with these hurricanes, thinking that we will ride out a few more years here and deal with pulling the boat out every November.🤪. Stay safe.. and we will be looking forward to your updates.
Watching and waiting Tom, like many Americans. You, The Admiral & Matey be safe. I'm thinking the Hudson River isn't looking too bad right now. Still living vicariously through you. Got the summer flu, Instead of binge watching NETFLIX, binge watched the boat trip down the ICW. Never gets old... Batten down the hatches and bring on the rum!
All the best! I feel so bad for my Florida/ Cape Coral fellows. My favorite Country and State ! Just went down the canal last summer on my vacation. So beautiful! But still saw some damages espeacialy at Sanibel Island. Finges crossed! Greets from gemrany !!! Stay save!
SW Cape Coral and also on a canal here. Had my boat hauled out and into a secure lot today. I pray the surge is less than Ian. These storms are getting crazy. My family and I are bugging out Tuesday. Godspeed!
Looks like under the circumstances you've covered all the variables. Not expecting any wheres as much on this side, but fortuitously I took the boat in for bottom paint/haul last week. Good luck to you and yours.
Best of luck to you. We take our 35' sailboat up a canal away from the coast, get lifted 15' in a lock then have it pulled every summer when we leave florida, i hope that approach works again
Praying you and all others in the path of Milton come out unscathed. I have numerous friends along the Gulf coast from New Port Richey to Tampa Bay area , a friend of my husband's lives near Cape Coral and my ex and his wife have a second home along a canal in Ft Meyers. The ex , foolishly, decided to leave Jersey yesterday and flew down to Ft Meyers. His wife was smart and stayed in Jersey. It's gonna be a scary , rough ride for y'all. Stay safe !!!!
great video, we are new to Cape Coral this year, San Carlos Canal, our boat is over at Boaters Landing in Ft Meyers, house is buttoned up tight and hoping for the best, looks like you're as set as you can get best of luck
Good luck to you Captain Tom, Admiral Brigitte and First mate Matey. Godspeed to you all. Enjoy your previous videos. I hope you make out ok from the storm although it’s not looking good. You’re in our thoughts and prayers.
Prayers for you and all the people that are in the line of this Hurricane. I live in North Beach, Miami Beach, we're expecting a lot of wind and rain. Give updates when you can, I'll keep checking UA-cam for any news from you guys.
The boats look like they are pretty secure but I think I would have run them both north. II's a crap shoot...best of luck! And I'll do a shot for you for good luck!
I just heard Milton is a Cat 5 Hurricane with 180mph winds. That's insane. And the storm surge is even worse? Good luck and best wishes. Hope this isn't nearly as bad as it seems at the moment.
It looks like you’re well on your way to having your boats prepared. If Milton is projected to hit further south, I hope you have a contingency plan. Stay Safe!!!
Great job, especially those spring lines 👍 I heard there's a mandatory evacuation order for Lee County zones A and B, dony know if that affects you? Really pray rhis isn't as bad as expected... 🙏
Wishing you the best, and I hope the storm surge is lower than forecasted. Also, the storm surge you displayed showed higher than 9 feet, which could mean significantly higher. That could mean more than a few inches in your house, as in several feet. Be safe, and good luck
