Actually, and beyond any aspect of ethnomusicology, this a nice introduction to the realm of musical creativity and innovation. Thumbs up for Shawn and the Schulich School of Music!

Good thesis, LCM-HCF & nPr-nCr maths. understanding (+AABAA... Permutations), practical next reciting-bols (bols=bolna/speak out...clap/wave•pinky•ring•middle), of taals (from taalab/pond, with taals having limit/boundary unlike ponds).
N.B.: For Carnatic Mridangam, Vedic kirtan/Rabindrasangeet khol/mridanga, dhulki, Africa bongo, A.Khusru's 'upright' tabla, the treble=goat hide, whereas the bass=cow hide globally®. Kolkata, India, & share globally plz.❤

Nice and reminds me how I've played 25 years ago. It's not wrong, but in order to play very fast and automatic without practising hours daily this isn't doing the trick. Today I know that Tabla works a bit different. One hint: Kumar Bose solos are more authentic than others...

Hello. I understand what you are saying, and I did consider the use of 'TaKaDiMi' in this particular exercise. I could have used 'TiRaKiTa' instead, for example. However while I definitely agree that TaKaDiMi is Carnatic in origin, it has become so widespread, that one can also hear it applied in Hindustani music as well. This is more detail that can be explained in such a short video, which was really intended as a very short introduction, with a very short example. TaKiTa, however does exist as a traditional bol in Hindustani music, so I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that point.

Great video BUT, how do you go from all the basic syllables to suddenly a rhythm such as 'TiRaKiTa' this rhythm has syllables which you have not talked about or mentioned or explained, so it becomes immediately confusing (to me anyway). I would expect to see combinations of the syllables you outlined before you got to the rhythms? Sorry I am a Westerner trying to understand Indian rhythms 🙈.

Hello and thank you for your interest. This video isn't intended as a 'how to play tabla' video, but rather a very brief introduction to the instrument, with just a few quick, short examples. When learning to play the tabla, things progress in a more gradual manner. The bols (syllables) in tabla tell us which strokes are to be played on the instrument. A particular syllable can refer to more than one sound, and many sounds have more than one name. This can be confusing to someone just starting out. The best way to learn this music is to find a teacher and to learn through the oral tradition.

    उत्तरी अमेरिका में एक संगीत एकादेश के शिक्षक के रूप में, मेरा ध्यान इन पाठों पर है जो छह वर्ष से कम आयु के बच्चों और प्रारंभिक स्तर पर हैं, खासकर उनके पहले दिन तबला कक्षा में। छात्र को अपने पहले स्तर का निर्माण करने के लिए आवश्यक चालें और टिप्स प्रदान किए जाते हैं।
As a music academy instructor in North America, my emphasis in these lessons is on children under the age of six and those at the introductory level, especially on their initial days in the tabla classroom. I provide the essential tricks and tips for students to lay the foundation for their musical journey.

Tabla is an instrument from the Hindustani tradition. While there are a few people who play tabla in Carnatic music, it is quite rare, and it is not normally found in the Carnatic tradition. The percussion instruments used in Carnatic music are the mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, and morsing.
