I sit in awe of Sanju Sahai. He’s an INCREDIBLE musician, but also such a humble and patient teacher. What a delight to learn something new from a master at work!
how wonderful to see this continuation of bringing together musicians from the Indian and western classical traditions to discuss their artistry! The mutual respect and fascination and learning is beautiful to see. thank you. Hope to see more in the future :)
Sanju Sahai comes from a very prestigious Gharana of musicians particularly rhythm instruments. The fellow is very lucky tho have personal lesson from a Maestro. A wonderful treat for all music lovers.
This so melodious created by three totally different musical instruments combined. I could never imagine Bach with tabla and tanpura...holy moly. This is amazing.
I used to play the tabla when i was younger.....i got till level four. Anyone who is not exposed to some form of training with musical instrument at early age is missing out . Parents you owe it to your kids to get them trained.
This is just brilliant. Its so great to see Eastern and Western music, in it's classical forms coming together, being fused, being in harmony and at one with each other. This was incredible to watch !! Loved it, thank you !!
NEW INSTRUMENT FILMS: Hi everyone! We’re about to embark on making some new instrument films and we want to hear from you! What instruments do you want to see covered? Reply within the next week! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your feedback. We carefully pick who is featured in our videos and it can often be a lengthy process to find exactly the right fit. It's important that in this context the member of the orchestra is really keen to learn something new, and it was not deemed essential that we use a percussionist in this context. We do hope you enjoyed the film and will continue to follow our work.
Oh it was just really funny to see the violinist tens up his joints and fingers to play the Tabla! I am a percussionist and it just brought back lots of nostalgia when I first played the bongo drums, tensing up with full concentration! XD
We have a new instrument film - EUPHONIUM - coming out on 23 Feb 2018 - make sure you subscribe to be the first to see it! TRAILER: ua-cam.com/video/U1nNyGLD170/v-deo.html
When samplers were new, the E-mu Emulator (1981) was kinda a big deal. Stevie Wonder got the first one. Depeche Mode used it on everything. It let you load sounds from 5-1/4" floppy disks. The Ferris Bueller synth was the Emulator 2. E-mu built up an extensive library of sampled instruments and in 1989 started selling rack modules with a few hundred instruments each. If you look in the manual of the 1991 Proteus/3 World (p.103) it shows the keyboard mapping for the module's tabla samples. It gives you Baya Tone x2, Baya Slap, Baya Hit with your left hand and Tabla Tone x2, Tabla Mute A/B/C, and Tabla Open with your right hand. It's the only instrument map with the note "All Instruments in The Tabla are played back at their original pitch." It's cool seeing this and finally having some context for the tabla. The Udu Drum, Bata Drums and Deff/Bendir/Req "Middle Eastern Drum" samples are also in there so I suppose I should look for videos on those, too.
You don't have to see the fingers He plays Teen Taal in the first And during the duet he played KEHERWA which is 8 beats and devided 4/4 You have to just learn the technical terms of Tabla Tabla have 360 TAAL's in Indian classical music he played one of them.
13:38 - This part takes me back to the Duck Hunt theme music. (Five seconds into this video: ua-cam.com/video/1h_89R3sHF0/v-deo.html) I really enjoyed this video. While a violist is not a percussionist, Kramers' apparent knack for remembering a pattern without having to walk through it several times really helps the pacing of the video. And Sanju Sahai seems to be both an impressive player and a very good teacher.
Can you do a video on the Sitar if you haven't already? It's such a complex and wonderful sounding instrument that I have yet to be informed of in detail like your Instrument Guide videos.
Hello! We don't have a full Instrument Guide on the sitar, but do check out our video with Craig Ogden in conversation with sitar player Roopa Panesar here: ua-cam.com/video/KLrFMSYg--I/v-deo.html

I was very worried about the prospect of listening to Bach with Tabla accompaniment but, when it all began it was only but a sigh of relief. Even the drone of the tambura fits in quite nicely. I mischievously wonder if it would have been the same had not been Bach but something atonal like a Schoenberg. European 'dhun'-like melody with Indian percussion... sounded a lot like Dikshitar-esque 'nottuswaras'.
Impressive. You just made Bach cool (not that he wasn't before hand). Would someone be so kind as to tell me what that piece of Bach is called? Much appreciated.
Bach certainly does sound great with tabla! The piece that Gijs and Sanju perform is the 5th movement, 'Bourrée', from Bach's Suite for Cello No. 4 in E flat (BWV1010).
I sit in awe of Sanju Sahai. He’s an INCREDIBLE musician, but also such a humble and patient teacher. What a delight to learn something new from a master at work!
This is brilliant - I love the idea of having a spoken musical alphabet like that! Very clear teaching also.
😊😊😊
Thumbs up is not enough but whatever... Some youtube videos needs "This is exceptional!" button. A pure gem.
Thank you so much!
I absolutely love watching musicians play together in the moment. It's as close to telepathy as we've ever achieved. Amazing Tabla and Viola.

That was a treat! And the Bach-tabla duet was wonderful indeed!
Brilliant Sanju Sahai is always pure sattva. Only take a look at his actions, he never makes false, or unconfident movements
I really loved the sound of the two played together....viola and tabla...tabla is next on my learn to play list
How many instruments do you know now? And any advice on how to pick up a new instrument quickly for the first time?
This so melodious created by three totally different musical instruments combined. I could never imagine Bach with tabla and tanpura...holy moly. This is amazing.

Sanju Sahai is a great tabla player, who has inherited the ancient tradition of Banaras Gharana.... (located in Varanasi).
Sanju Sahai is INCREDIBLE!!!!! OMGoodness.
Amazing both are so talented. I love the blend of eastern and western music.
Both musicians' expressions while playing their instrument is really really magnificent and of topest notch
Great series, and what a great teacher Sanju Sahai is. I really enjoyed this.
The Bach was amazing. That is a gold mine there. Reminded of beautiful maihar pieces. Thank you for sharing this.
