Nexter and Thales presented exclusively for Naval News their new RAPIDFire remotely operated naval gun system. This complete solution includes the 40 mm CTA gun, an integrated fire control system, an operator console and a sighting system. ===================== The RAPIDFire system developed by the consortium formed by Thales and Nexter has been chosen by the French defence procurement agency (DGA) to equip future French Navy vessels (the Chevallier-class replenishment tankers also known as BRF and the future class of OPV) with new artillery. This new system will provide the Navy’s surface vessels with an effective close-in defence capability against modern air and surface threats. RAPIDFire incorporates the new medium calibre 40 mm gun developed by CTAI, the international subsidiary of Nexter Systems and BAE Systems. The system is compatible with the full range of ammunitions developed for land forces programmes. For naval air defense, a development and proudctiion contract for a future smart ammunition known as Anti Aerial Airburst (A3B) round is expected to be awarded this year. ===================== For new videos every week, subscribe here! ua-cam.com/users/NavalNews?su... I remember when Xavier only launch French speaking video sometime ago. I commented this is another CIWS, and some fools call me talking nonsense. Turn out Nexter do aim this as CIWS. Rate of fire can be augmented by type of ammo.
I'm not fully convinced yet. When Xavier asked them if it was a CIWS (as in an anti-missile system), they didn't say yes, they only said it could do surface to air. Then when he asked them what sort of air targets the dedicated surface to air ammo could engage, they only gave drones and helicopters as example. My take is that since the dedicated ammo is still under developpement, they have yet to do tests against a simulated cruise missile and validate that capability.
@@WBtimhawk it’s not a ciws, it’s specialised as an anti surface weapon and anti slow air targets. That's how it should be, but in reality this will be the main armament of destroyers/frigates while the offshore patrol boats will get the 12.7 HMG at best.
they'll be on a ship, this system won't lack radars. The optical targeting does help for the final aiming. Same for the ground system, you're supposed to use it coupled with a GroundMaster radar, also made by Thales

Its an clever design but as an ciws fells it fire rate wrong. 300 per min is not that good. Better were 450 shots buts that my. Also can one use the gun with the oto melara 40mm bofors system with the two 40mm guns. I think with Upgrade fire rate to 450 it would have 900 . A killer system. And thanks for this wonderful video.
It’s not a ciws, it’s an AA (UAV, mini drone, helicopter) + anti surface. You don’t need an high rate of fire on this weapon, because the video say it’s very very acurate. So you have the same efficiency but you spare ammo and you have a lot of ammo because they are telescoped and more compact. So it can be effective for prolonged fight and still be active even if the ship is damaged. France never has develloped a ballistic CIWS so far cause they use only aster and maybe mistral missiles for this.
No. Everytime you upgrade the caliber you have a trade-off in lower RoF. 300 RPM for 40mm class is normal. Enhanced effects ( more explosives and shrapnel ) and special ammo ( timed and proximity fuses ) means RoF can be lower.
@@a1tse191 the type 31 use 40mm bofors Mk4. An ugly but pretty good ciws. The rapidfire is also a 40mm but not a ciws. Have I not seen this technology developed by the German Rheinmetall 🤔 a couple of years ago? A slightly different approach to it but if you ask me it's the same technology behind it!
Lots of people have developed Case Telescoped rounds in the past, but this is the only one to enter service. This was a joint UK and France development.

It can do a lot of damage to any ship or boat. If you fire 40mm rounds at a ship you can knock ot the ships radar wipe crew out in the front venerable area of any large ship depending on rounds used and range. On smaller ships such as OPV and attack boats it can knock them out easily. Not just aircraft and drones ect Also it is good for close in weapon system. Can shoot down incoming missile. Especially cruise missile with the high explosive rounds. I watch a documentary on the battle of midway ww2 as where I seen a live footage of an American aircraft switched from using his guns firing down on the ship igniting the ammunition bay and the ship exploded. So if a 30mm gun could do that to a thick armor of a battleship. I think a 40mm with the armord piercing shels today could easily penetrate a large ship depending on range
