Just a small correction, ARR usually will have other people arrange his songs. Pravin Mani, Harris Jayaraj, Ranjit Barot, Joshua Sridhar etc etc. Their contribution in his songs is quite significant. ARR usually composes the tunes with singers and then pass it to the mentioned composers and they wil build the song from scratch starting from the beats and such. Then after all is done, ARR will go through it and if he is happy with how the song is done, he will leave it as it is and if not, he will do some changes. This is mentioned by Pravin Mani and Harris Jayaraj in their interviews before. One of ARR's huge success is that he have had people with good ears for music just like him. He gives his musicians just as much as freedom as how he gave his singers to contribute in his song. Another example to this is the Duet Theme music. The tune of the saxophone piece was personally composed and played by the late Kadri Gopalnath and all ARR did was record it and compose the music for it. This too was mentioned by the late Kadri sir himself in one of the interviews.
The song Kavitha mentioned that had Carnatic element and was not a hit in Hindi is a song and album that was a huge hit in Tamil. The song she mentioned is the one that gave Sujatha Mohan her big break in 1993; Netru Illatha Maatram - Pudhiya Mugam.
Another fun fact Kay Sera Sera is a remake of ARR's Tamil song "Kadhal Nayagara" from the movie En Swase Katre. IMHO, Harini sung the song much much better in the original compared to the Hindi version. Probably because she sung it in a very Carnatic way. Hope to see you interview more artist from ARR's studio to know how his working style.

@@rahamanshaik very true brother. Even I understood this only after chatting with a few music artist and realize how music is really composed. ARR's father was the "Pravin Mani" & "Harris Jayaraj" for Malayalam composers back in the 60s. He did all the music for the tunes they composed. This was mentioned by ARR himself. Guess that's why ARR kinda followed this template. But I did heard ARR did everything himself from Roja till Rangeela. Only from 1996, ARR started delegating this work to others since he wanted fresh ideas not wanting to sound repetitive.

@@hareneishnadhar I feel 90s and early 2000s were his peak performing days.. I dont know why I am not able to connect with his music now a days like earlier. May be my listening stuck to past compositions or something. I dont know I only feel this or others too. His focus completely shifted to other international projects and his music academy to make more artists. I also heard like he want to explore other crafts of music and movie production.

@@rahamanshaik very true brother. His 90s and early 2000s songs were very solid. I personally feel it was Rang De Basanti project that made ARR gone a little easy on the tunes and the interludes. Post RDB, his songs became quite common and not as how he did pre RDB. Very blunt interludes, nothing like the 90s. The other day I was listening to Karuthamma songs and was wondering what happened to our music field these days. ARR CAN give good songs promising the director requests it from him. I noticed Director Shankar has been very consistent in his request of songs from ARR. Boys, Sivaji or 2.0 Songs are just as good as Kadhalan or Indian. No doubt the his creativity is above other composers back then and today, but you know, that soul in a song sometimes it just go missing.

Kavitaji has this unique quality of responding to every question with spontaneous enthusiasm, even if is is a question she could not have expected. Her songs in Pukaar, Taylor or Zubeida have their own unique flavour. And she is openly praiseworthy of others. Her views about ARR singing are realistic and show her own understanding. Umeshji, try and bring in a conversational tone instead of staid Q & A. It would be interesting to hear you debate or discuss, instead of being an off-camera interviewer.

I'm so glad she mentions some mid eastern influences in sunta hai Mera khuda... Remember maiya maiya and how it beautifully fused with the Gujarati folk humming .... No question, the man is a genius... There is a trance like quality in the satrangi re song.. Which is also conspicuous in Kun Faya Kun....As if there is someone overcome by extreme joy and flying....And what about that other masterpiece phir se udd chala in rockstar.... The song literally drifts, not being confined to an mukhda-antara structure.. Its not just the protagonist, the song itself is set free by the Mozart of madras.. Thank you for another enchanting episode

Pukar and Zubeidaa are two very under-rated soundtracks. I personally rate them as the best of 2000 and 2001 respectively. Both are over-looked because they were overshadowed by Taal and Lagaan which made a much bigger impact in terms of success at the cinema, and sadly the way the Hindi film industry works, very rarely will a soundtrack gain traction if the movie is not a hit. Pukar, with it's vast versatility is an absolute masterpiece. Zubeidaa has some of the most beautiful vocal productions: have you ever heard Alka or Kavita or Lata sound as exquisite as on "Mehendi Hai Rachnewali", "Dheeme Dheeme" 'Main Albeli", "So Gaye Hain"

ARR has been outstanding in his choice of singers for his songs. Rather than sticking to the veterans, he has always experimented and introduced a lot of new voices. Being a South Indian, listening to Kavitha ji's voice was something different and unique under ARR's composition.
Kavitha ji was spot on when she talked about identifying Rahman's songs when you hear it. That's the kind of identity he has established for himself. That's an achievement not every music director can dream of.

No exaggeration but when I listen ARR music
while driving - feel like destination can be little far so that his music on the go need not stop
working at gym - makes me run extra mile or few more repetitions to complete the song
and off course marry with wife again and again so to add more of his new music in my the album.
Then why not for great singers like kavita ji , udit ji etc.. make them sing different, high pitch / low pitch , try something new.
One such best example is “Mukkala song” sung by Mano - One of his Telugu interviews, he reviled how ARR brought new style and made him sing different. And we all know even today, it is chart topper.

ARR is true legend. He mastered Music and can make miracles. His style of extracting the talent is completely different. His ability is involve every one, give freedom and extract something new out of singers, musician and then add his talent further. The combination of all executed so well since he started “Roja”, even today we are talking his past. Current and future work yet to cover.

O2india, thank you again for brilliant episodes and making us aware of artists perspective who worked with ARR. This is an epic series.

Great interview by the sweetest guest here ever so far and every word of hers must be gold plated. Absolutely pleased by everything she said and how she funnily narrated that high and low notes thing was really nice. She did it all in good humour and there's no bizarre sarcasm here unlike one of the earlier singers we had.
I also loved how she didn't forget that song which is so beautiful even in Hindi despite having that Carnatic touch as she said. Well, this song if she knew it or not was originally sung by the South Indian Lataji, another all time great, P. Susheelaji. This tune has so much soulfulmagic like Roja songs that just takes you to those beautiful and evergreen 90s. It's one of the bestest ARR songs but unlike Roja, many ppl doesn't know this. Another song from the same movie too is a great hit which was sung by Sujata Mohan in Hindi too. But because ppl back then were still in the Alka - Kumar Sanu type musical coma, they couldn't see the beauty of these songs in the North and the film too was a disaster to add to this.
Her observations about each and everything regarding his music are amusing and insightful at the same time. She said it all with such elated tone is the most amazing part here!
P.S: The second cover version by Sashaa Tirupati was so nice but still it doesn't have that tinge and lilt of Kavitaji's voice, though.

@ question on similarity between music arranging by LP n ARR.
No doubt ARR is best music arranger and best music director that's why he has won the Oscar and Max. number of Filmfare awards. He records songs ( voice) in pieces/ patches and arranges music by using computer technology( recently used AI too) where many facilities like edit, listening before final recording, re listening, changing pitch &/ range, mixing , keeping voice/ background music hard/soft relatively etc are available and enhance creativity.
For LP it was different era of Live recording of songs with whole orchestra, Laxmi ji used to compose tune and Pyare Ji used to write the Musical notes for music arrangement of whole song directly from his brain in one strech ( no use of computer editing)and all musicians used to stand behind him n copy notes for their respective instruments. They used to record many songs a day. On an average they have given music and background Music for 15 to 20 movies per year during their peak. In one particular year they have composed music of around 30 movies. For such reasons I admire LP's music arranging more even though being a ARR fan.
One must listen to 1. Pyare Ji ' s Symphony called OM SHIVAM
    2.SP Balasubramaium' video about LP
