Crafting Mega Man Challenge Runs Worth Watching

  • The challenge running scene in the Mega Man community has sadly seen a decline over the years. A major part of that is Capcom's fault, due to the lack of new games for us runners to sink our teeth into and show off to our audiences. But admittedly, some of it falls on us to spice up the formula a bit and boost the entertainment value with something fresh. I'll be sharing just a small insight into what goes through my mind when crafting my own runs, how these games' freeform style allows for all types of playstyles, and the overall goal I personally aim for; all in order to serve up the best runs I can possibly provide to my audience.
    Hopefully this video will also be a decent resource for aspiring runners hoping to contribute to keeping this scene of stylish gameplay alive, for I, and others like X MaverickHunter, will not be around forever. The absence of HideOfBeast speaks for itself, as things weren't quite the same without him, and it's a shame that he's mostly forgotten at this point because he was one of the best creators in this scene. My only one desire is that when the day comes for me to finally retire the Magnus Zero channel, there will be more people to pick up where I left off, and even take it to greater heights.

    this is how i always thought you practiced these runs and honestly, this is the most efficient and sane way to do it.
    anyone who looks down on players who practice with save states clearly don't know how much of a hassle it is to practice execution in games like these. Kudos on you for transitioning over to real hardware for the final cut but even if you did your segments save stateless on retroarch i'd never take anything away from you.

      @MagnusZero  2 місяці тому +13

      I have to note that I mistakeningly left out some background info when making this video. Most of the runs done on the channel in the past were done on emulators (without save states in the final cuts, of course). It wasn't until recently that I returned to original hardware for finalized runs.
      But regardless, you're right. Anyone who's shaming save states clearly do not know that speedrunners and other challenge runners commonly practice via emulation before doing the "serious take" on either the right hardware or stateless on an accepted emulator. But I fear this stigma around it also formed because many of us creators and runners simply don't show enough of our behind-the-scenes practices that make what we do possible.

      @@MagnusZero I figured your earlier stuff was on emulator. it doesn't take away from it's legitimacy because it's fairly easy to tell when someone's actually playing real time or are using frame advance. fortunately, no one's really found out how to perfect 'human-like' input for TAS lmao.
      besides, you've been largely forthcoming in your vids anyway. can't wait to catch your new run.

      Yeah save states are seriously a godsend for challenge runs on any action oriented game. Many of my challenge runs are done on console so I’m sorta envious of people who have access to tools like that as depending on the game and scenario, it’s pretty hard to grind out and understand certain strats that I wanna do for a run without a save state or anything similar to that

    How Magnus Perfects his swag runs

  • @TheSqueakerNerd
    @TheSqueakerNerd 2 місяці тому +3

    Yep, this is exactly what I've done in the past. Wonderful way of explaining it.
    For me, I go through the whole stage 1st, then I think about what I'd like to do that feels stylish to me & the break it up into parts before practicing the stage in full.
    It's very very rewarding. That's the cool thing about challenge runs. It's purely put on yourself to introduce it. That does come with problem solving but it's satisfying when you think up how you could tackle a section, realize it's kinda hard to do but then somehow make it doable anyway.
    Imagining what kind of swag you want to put into it is cool & will likely be cool for others to watch as well if you're putting that kind of effort in.
    Definitely enjoyed this & have a nice day everybody.

    I just finished Z3 and Z4 for the first time in the past few weeks (I don't want to play the first two because I've heard the weapon system is awful), and I've done some challenge runs like the perfect score in Z3 and the beat the game in under an hour in Z4. But I will never understand how you do your extreme runs. They're just so mesmerizing and I'm always hooked in within the first couple minutes. Keep up the great work, I love watching your runs!

    • @Voltricity435

      honestly leveling up the weapons isn't too bad. a few minutes of grinding in Z1 on teh tower enemies in the first stage will get teh weapons to a combfterble place, and in Z2 teh weapons level up much faster so they should be combfterble by stage 2 or 3

    Out of curiosity, do you notice the difference in input lag between original hardware and emulator? I know you did lots of work minimising lag for original hardware recording, but how is your RetroArch setup?

    • @MagnusZero

      Not really. GBI replacing the GB Player boot disc essentially eliminated any noticeable lag. My RetroArch settings are default.

    I can fully relate on resets being a contributing factor to deciding the strategy, especially when the brain throws out a fart occasionally when you think your muscle memory is already consistent.
    As someone who also favors finesse and artistry over speed, may I suggest Option B 2.0 (if it's not too late) to buffer charging the rod during the same time as charging the saber; just so charging the chain rod doesn't seem like a random "attack the empty space" act and out of place for just an additional and subtle amount of swag.

    • @MagnusZero
      @MagnusZero  2 місяці тому +3

      Good eye. I honestly have no damn clue why I kept starting the charge late (especially when there's a section much later in the stage that requires charge and I didn't do that there). Probably the muscle memory from reloading the save state so much during practice managed to stick too hard, lol. I appreciate pointing that out.

    Glad to see someone else frankensteins their controllers to their liking. I had a couple of dead PS2 controllers that I tore up and nabbed parts from for a third party controller and that third party controller was my go-to for fighting games and platformers for many years.

    Yeah, the Old Skool controller is currently the best one to use in terms of affordability and performance.
    You could use an SNES controller with a Raphnet SNES to GCN adapter since an SNES controller is much more comfortable but it's all preference.
    The Retro-Bit Legacy GC looks good but unfortunately, the Z button is in an uncomfotable place and you always need to change to D-pad mode when connecting to a controller port. I had high hopes for this controller but it let me down.
    I personally use the Old Skool controller for my Game Boy Player even though I do have an SNES controller with a Raphnet adapter.

    while i didn't suspect you played your clean, swag runs on an emulator i was guessing it was done on the collection versions. especially for the older / handheld games.
    but WOW on gamecube with the peripheral that lets it run GBA cartridges? that's passion and dedication for the original hardware.
    as for practise runs on emulators? kinda expected. unless you're insane enough to keep retrying on the actual game (cant imagine doing this until you got a perfect run. dying mid-stage already make me want to throw my controller), this is the way to go.

      i disagree, it ties up the loose ends story wise from zero 3 and thus concretely ends the series and the conflict with weil serves as a good end for zero’s character arc with him confidently showing that he can now answer the question he posed in x4. “What am I fighting for?” Not for a sense of duty or justice nor because he was created to be a war machine but for the ones who always fought by his side and had his back and the ones who placed their hopes with him. The people he cares for and believes in.
