To be honest, IMHO the Philippines is pricing Itself out of a home base for me and certainly as a permanent retirement destination. What you get for what you pay for in comparison to what you get for what you pay for in Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia is a big difference. And to a lesser degree in Indonesia depending on the location.
I am fed up with the PI and it's people. The pollution, the noise, the constant barking of dogs, people drive like hell, the red tape, the brown outs, the stares and being accused being rich. I went to Borneo Malaysia, loved it. Loved the people, it is clean and quiet. that is where I am moving to Kuching, Malaysia. you can rent a fully furnished condo for $220 a month. eat a big meal out for $1.50 and it's very safe.
THe big advantage the Philippines are offering (in my view at least) is that you can get permanent residence. Who want´s to retire and have the risk of being forced to relocate when too old to do so?
For retirement yes. For vacation not as much. Mainly because of the prices of plane tickets and the hassle of the long haul. Many destinations in South America. It's best to keep a low profile in a country like the Philippines or any country in South East Asia. It would be difficult to do that if you have a UA-cam channel i understand that maybe some ex patts need a extra $200 income a month because their pension might not be enough. But a lot of guy's get a lot of hassle running a channel there can also be a lot of jealously between bloggers especially when someone new goes to a city and their channel starts to take off, I think that played a big part in the reason you got so much hassle your channel started to take off fast. There's even people starting channel's with no content apart from bashing other channels. I also think South East Asia can be a good place to retire providing you do proper research have a good plan in place and try to stay under the radar.
It’s gotten much more expensive here in the Philippines in the last seven years I have been coming. A big jar of Skippy peanut butter is $9. US. Well now, in my neck of the woods, Angeles City ain't such a bad spot to set up camp if you're fixin' to become an expat. Sure, there's plenty of watering holes 'round these parts, but if that ain't your cup of moonshine, it shouldn't ruffle yer feathers none. This city's got a whole heap more to offer than just a cold brew and a pay-per-view sweetheart. If you're single, most gals in town ain't in the bar biz, so don't go jumpin' to conclusions there. For a feller from the West, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better spot for stockin' up on them Western vittles and knick-knacks. Now, you might not be able to dive off the back porch into the drink, but if you're hankerin' for a beach, you can mosey on over to places like Subic in a jiffy, probably 'bout an hour or so.
