This was such a confident booster. I’ve been DROWNING in that cycle and now
everything makes sense. Ughhh it feels so nice to know it isn’t just me! Thank you so much!
Dudeeee, exactly what i needed to hear! Been lagging on finishing my portfolio cause of all you mentioned! Thanks for the push!
I know that feeling all too well, you got this!!
To be honest, I have been struggling with the portfolio for half a year, and now I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Thank you so much, you saved my day ❤
Mimi, thank you so much! It's comforting to know that I'm not alone and I'm going to use every advice you've given
Just the advice I needed to hear! Feeling so discouraged, but I'm trying to power through.
Thank you for this - Love following along!
I needed to hear this ♡ thank you.
so good, thank you. Def gonna help me.
Really needed this video right now while re-designing my portfolio :))
Thank you so much for this
Thank you thousand times. You put into words my feelings so precise.
You nailed it like know one has ever!!! Thankyou!!
Thanks! Great video! Wished that I would have found your video 9 months ago. lol.. I redesigned my site - like 5 times trying to get it right...
Great video!!!
Thank you, I really needed to hear this today! lol
It's happening to me rn. Thanks a lot to make this video ❤️
Half video, amazing content!!! I feel pretty much like you said.
I really needed to hear this. I got laid off 3 months ago and lately have been burning myself out working until 1am working on my portfolio in hopes of getting a job. Its been really stressing me out seeing other portfolios and how good their case studies are than comparing it to mine and see I dont have as dense research as them or projects that are as good.
I just started playing with Figma. Much needed information. Thanks Mimi.
Thank you! Badly needed this 🥹
As I go on the very last stretch of a LOOOONG UX bootcamp, this video was exactly what I needed!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ love this!!
Ive quit designing my fullstack protfolio altogether. If it isnt one thing, its another. Once you solve one big issue with coding, another appears, 1 problem turns into a zillion others. How do others do it. I think your absolutely right. Stop comparing. I absolutely love this video! Im actually going to look at all your videos because you are 100% right about everything. I love your down to earth perspective. I would love to collaborate with you! Im very knowledgable about somethings, but lack in others, we could chat and pick each others brain and figure out where we might be going wrong at.. Kinda like a mentor
Thank uuuu so much. I haven't started yet but u gave me a GOLD mindset.
I hope we can connect soon. ✨🥰
This video is exactly what I needed because I haven't even started with my UX portfolio
I’m in the last week of DL UXA, and this is EXACTLY what I needed. Thanks Mimi!
Keep it up, you got this!
Oh my god Mimi this is sooo on point! I'm working on my second portfolio and i'm struggling so much with overwhelming feelings of perfection and not getting anything done!!
I think concentrating on MVP is a great advice and that is mostly my conclusion too.
Also i realized that the most important thing is to do a good job with your first portfolio and that's it, without stressing way to much or aim to perfection. Just good. Because at the end of the day, it all comes down to WHO is the person that is watching your portfolio. Even if you think it's perfect, some people will still find it boring, some other will like it, and find it appropriate for your level.
So as long as we do something good, that covers all the important things that there should be in the case studies and in the home/about page, without getting crazy, I think we'll be just fine.
So let's not stress to much!! Good luck!!
Amazing perspective!! You got this!! 💓
Ha I’m a senior designer and I still get tunnel vision and imposter syndrome when working on my portfolio. It’s so easy to go down the rabbit hole!
Hey Mimi! your videos have been very helpful. Could you make a video comparing 3 or more portfolios that you think were very creative . May be something like the newest portfolios styles that you wish you had thought about.
Hi! That’s a great idea, I’ll add it to the list. Thanks for watching ✨
Watching this video, I kept hearing you say, "For your sanity," throughout (despite you only saying it once), and it dawned on me: the PPC ended up creating this self-critical loop in my head that WAS soothing, no matter how destructive because of patterns. Sorry if this sounds out of ballpark; I've just really been struggling through Bootcamp (already on my 2nd extension), and you're my go-to watch for the realness of UX. Thank you always for the self-awareness and reassurance ❤
Thank you for watching! I’ve been a victim to getting sucked into this cycle; so you’re not alone! Excited for your journey into UX, don’t give up!!
I never even finished my three case studies. Two of them were done and the third was still in progress. Decided to just try and send out my website for a few jobs and had a few call backs and three offers very quickly. In each case they only looked at one of my projects and not in as much detail as you think. It looked good but I realised they were happy I understood the ux process. After that it was making sure I fit within the team and doing a project to make sure I can do the job. I told my design buddies, don't get too caught up in every word you write. You can always adjust it later but get it out and apply.
I agree 1000% 🙃
This is honestly a great thing for me to hear right now. I got out of design school and felt some excitement designing for ui/ux during my time there and I was thinking of going into this field the reason why I started doing ux google certificate. However feeling a bit lost with self-doubt I started to question if I actually wanted to get into this field. This video gave me hope that ui/ux may not be so bad and that Im just a beginner learning through the process of what UI and ux is about, thank you!
UX UI is one of the most important jobs and has incredible future, what the hell are you talkin about?
@@FablesOutofSpace Yeah i should get out of my own head and just continue educating myself about it!
Watching this for the fifth time because today I decided to spend half the day swapping colours around because procrastination is my best friend. Thanks for your advice as always
I'm glad seeing many relate to this. Not that I'm glad that people are also having a hard time. It's just that seeing most of the UX aspirants in different websites seeming like everyone else know what they're doing feels like I'm the only one getting lost. I'm just glad actually seeing people as humans and not completely perfect robots which makes me feel like the odd one out.
Have fun learning about UX everyone! No one can judge and shame you for being a beginner and still at early learning phase. If they do, then it's their fault and immaturity and not yours.
This is me right now! I am suffering hardcore with perfectionism right now. I have taken 3 weeks off work to get 2-3 case studies in my portfolio and now I’m running out of time. I’m feeling everything about this video right now. I could have spent the time enjoying my time off and relaxing.
I accidentally clicked on this video while working on my portfolio and holy shit I needed to hear this to feel valid😭 I’ve been reworking my home page for the longest while
Hi Mimi! Thank you so much for these videos, they’ve given me so much insight into UX. I’m so happy that I’ve found a career that I can see myself going into. Also, I’m just curious what monitor you have and if you recommend? Thanks again ☺️ x
Hi Hannah! Thanks for watching. I have an old and new monitor linked in my videos description here:
ua-cam.com/video/7XVhX7_7CaQ/v-deo.html
Both are great monitors!
Interesting perspective and video title... So this is about using "perfection" as excuse for procrastination...
In sum, DONE is better than good. Then you improve from there step by step.
Wait... Keep quitting is not a good habit in long run. Quitting is just one of the many solutions to such struggles.
If a portfolio is required to land a job, then trying to match the JD with a MVP-version of portfolio might be enough.
If I'm thinking to quit doing something, what I'd need to do is to re-examine my WHY in the first place, how I set my goal (how good the portfolio I want)...
No one asks you to turn every UX projects you've done into portfolio.
But if you do, means there's a reason why you wanted to do it. Find out why.
Working on portfolio itself is already a UX case study itself.
You can read more about this shared by Simon Pan with CaseStudyClub, where he talked about how writing case study helps him in his growth, i.e. treating case studies writing as journaling for reflection.
Probably applying some productivity framework and design framework into your portfolio creation process can benefit you in the long run. Cheers!
finally, my youtube algorhytm loves me, i needed to hear it lol, thanks!
Wait was that click bait
This is exactly how I feel. I almost gave up😭
I agree, but doing continuous UI changes in my portfolio works made me a better UI designer. And If I start compromising with my work, it becomes a habit for me. What I would recommend is to learn a little about branding and try to stick with colors, typography, layout, logo, etc. So we won't be changing our portfolio website often as we are trying to create a brand for ourselves.
I'm in my junior year of undergrad but I know I'm not going to end up using my degree. I was planning on grad school but I'm still not too sure of it, so I have started to look at other options and UX design seems to be something I would really enjoy! I don't major in psychology however I do minor in it, would that benefit me at all with the job search?
Degree doesn't matter much. It's mostly about the case studies in your portfolio and what you bring as an individual.
i've got interviews, job offers, 2nd 3rd rounds, etc, and nobody visited my site. I talked to people who get hired by google, and some of them just submit their presentation deck. So your portfolio doesn't really matter that much. However, redesigning my portfolio to me is retrospective and actually got me thinking about what I did wrong or what I could've done better. So that being said, if you don't like doing it, don't. If you feel like you can learn something from the process, maybe do it once in a while.
I have been trying to finish mine for 8months, countless coffees, vacations, places, settings, still 70% complete
Currently my biggest barrier with finding a new job right now.... i have to revamp my whole portfolio since this is my first year of professional work and i've been putting it off like crazy. I dont want to work 8+ hours and go back on the computer again :|
Seriously. Just use notion. 😅
I feel so seen!I’ve written and rewritten my first case study a hundred times. My brain spirals and then I keep staying in this ugly cycle
Grr I totally feel you, hope you can get it out there soon. You got this! ❣️✨
I'm this close to just screenshotting my figma into powerpoint..
“I wanna goooooo hooome” 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for that awesome video. I've tried that MVP portfolio and it doesn't work. it never gets me a job no matter how I tried. Insane portfolio designs have raised the expectations of the employers, and they are expecting more to see, especially visually appealing designs, not case studies or presentations or reports. I've been getting constant insights that UX have become a paint job with some post-it notes lately, and to be honest, this is a little bit depressing for me.
I hate my mind
The worst is when you have such a good website but they only want it in pdf form :c
Oh jeez, I haven’t come across that yet, that’s frustrating!
🥲🥲Is that a click bait Mimi 🥺
👀 so nobody gonna mention it?
true...^^^ but to be honest, this time her niceness and what she said has made me forgotten why i have clicked on the video in the first place - until i saw your comment. So somehow it was the another way than usual 😅
I disagree, mistakes are something common not only for humans, it is for everything. For example, what s a dark matter? Just a mistake.
I am really struggling with this cycle! Really veryy helpful video. Thanks alot ❤️🩹
Definitely me🥲 I am currently in this phase where i am not feeling fully enough like there's something wrong with my design, everyone's design looks better than mine, and other kinda thought like that. I am currently in my internship program, working as a ui/ux designer intern, but still i am not feeling enough. But i know, i am not alone and it is just about timing that i could feeling enough. Your content is such a mood booster and thank you to remind me that i am already enough just the way i am🥰
Wow, i needed to hear exactly this right now, thanks for sharing your older ux sister advice 🥺🫶 and the legally blonde reference 💙😂
Thanks for watching!! ❣️✨
