Hi i'm viatron from Sheffield, did you remember they also were known as gumball lanterns at the time in the states. This type was very unusual because it's has a pointed bottom glass refractor lighting bowl which it's a four way directional frosted in a way. With many gumball mercury street lanterns were featured in many u.s. t.v. police dramas in the 60s & the 70s such as Kojack, Starkey & Huch, Ironside & many others on u.s. t.v. networks. Thank you for your co-operation on this very special vintage American street lighting subject from David Viatron Esquire of crookes in Sheffield, England.
Wow a really nice street light & a light that I like to find & get my hands on too!👍👍👍👍👍
Very unique and cool light fixture!
that fixture looks like my old street light drawlings
Hey, I remember this type of lamp! Back in the '90s, many areas in Lexington had that. Sadly, they all got replaced later on. :(
Fantastic fixture, I have built a remote one myself from a old revo fitting in nz. Cheers for 10 years and keep up the good vids.
Cool! Thank You!
Very nice light! Also has the very rare 4-way refractor.
Congrats on 10 years! Watching you is the reason why I started lighting!
Thanks! Cool you started collecting because of the videos! Glad you enjoy them!
Very cool fixture !
Nice. Congratulations on 10 years!!!!!!!!!!
Thank You!
My city used to have these downtown. They started replacing them with nema heads as they went bad but about 2 years ago they replaced everything with Autobahn leds.
Interesting, not many places with these or any mercury vapor lights left.
My town has at least 700 Ge m400s
Strange light i have never see pretty cool made by GE you say? Love it 😍
I have seen screen cover over the vintage vertical street light lens to prevent vandalisms by throwing rock at it. There are at least 3 of trapezoid lens that is covered by a screen in Brighton Michigan, Wixom Michigan, and Dearborn Heights Michigan, as well as a cone shaped on Cherry Hill road just west of Telegraph Road in Dearborn Michigan that is covered by screen to prevent vandalism by throwing big rocks by vandals. All of them are lighted by Mercury Vapor Lamps on these vintage vertical type light fixtures and they don't make them anymore.
A real well designed street light made with quality and design in mind and made to look good unlike the led crap of today
Indeed!
@@Parrot175 merry christmas
So agree I hate most led street lights
DO IT! You have a lot of 175w MV/MH ballasts laying around. Just extend the wires from the ballast to the socket. Great video and yes a very rare fixture nowadays.
We have about 3 Westinghouse clamshell lights in my town, remotely ballasted too
S.how the light is distributed by the refractor.
Oooooo
Spaaaaaaam
Where would the ballast go???
On the pole top usually, sometimes you'd see them installed inside the pole or on the side of the pole
Hey friend, make a video of this luminaire with an hps lamp in operation to see the visual effect.
wow who made this streetlight?
Dominic Schmitz ge
Varola
Hope you can find a ballast for it for a future video
