Ep. 12 Q & A with Rip's Dad, Essy

  • Rip Esselstyn, founder of Plant-Strong by Engine 2, put out the call for questions he should ask his dad, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. (lovingly called 'Essy'), author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. There were so many questions, we will be sharing more of these candid Q & A sessions over time.
    Rip originally planned to visit his dad in Cleveland to capture this interview, but opted to record remotely amidst the travel restrictions and wanting to keep Dr. Esselstyn and his wife Ann safe from visitors.

      Well said! Dr. E. Is truly a source of great dietary wisdom to the world and a doctor who epitomizes what a healer should do for their patients. We are lucky he has devoted his professional career to showing how our American diet and medical schools have let down Americans. I don’t want a doctor who assumes I will never change. I want a doctor who will explain WHY low fat plant based eating can make my life better and more healthful! Bravo to Essy and to Rip!

    Your family is the best. Hopefully people will begin to connect the dots between eating animals and these terrible viruses. I feel that many people live with an incredible disconnect between what they choose to eat and the horrible damage it cause to the animals, the planet, and our health. I hope that this pandemic will inspire an awakening so that we can cone through this with a greater sense of empathy for the animals we torture and a desire to live healthier lives on many levels and for so many reasons. Thanks for all you do.

    37:48 THANK YOU SO MUCH for this explanation! With years of compliance, some people still cannot reach 150 and it's a relief to hear that "no number of cholesterol ever caused a heart attack, what does is the food that passes through your mouth!" Some livers just produce more cholesterol and that's okay. Thank you!

I’ve been plant based for over a decade, listen regularly to the Esselstyns (all 4 of them!) and still, was excited to learn about things like testing/removing grains to potentially lower intractable higher TC. Loved Dr. E’s takeaway on the disproven Predimed study. Thank you for the interesting advice, I've been vegatarian for 30 years plus but have never eaten enough greens to the extent you are all recommending , i will be added much more to my daily intake because of your informative descriptions, i gave up milk few years ago due to concerns for animal welfare reasons but still struggle to give up cheese, I only eat organic cheese & butter but still feel bad mentally once ive eaten it, I also eat nuts (not many ) is this unhealthy ? Also seeds... my favourite dishes have potatoes in them , thankfully i found Anne & Jane quite recently on 'you tube' i lost my mum to dementia related illness many years ago so i really enjoy watching them together , they have inspired my interest in healthy eating & cooking again 👏 ive been a lazy cook as i work long hours tend to eat ready meals ! But now have time & tons more idears on plant based foods & how not to use oils. One thing for sure is 'you are what you eat

    I have been eating plant base for 3 years and last December was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Does my previous diet, the basic American diet, have anything to do with that type of cancer? I have finished chemo and had my surgery on the 25th and then I start radiation in 6 weeks I have been pretty much OK but have recently gotten really scared about getting the virus.
    And I want to thank you for your Podcast and everything that your family does for the plant based community, for everyone!

    Dr Esselstyn, I'm a 66 year old healthy guy. I recently had a mild heart attack but the doctor saw no plaque. It was described to me as the collapse of the inner wall of the artery, (dissection). He could not put in a stent because the arteries in that area are so twisted. My fear is it will happen again since there is no stent... Since then I've been eating an oil free, whole foods, plant based diet with tons of leafy green vegetables. Can this diet help the artery wall from collapsing again?
    Thanks in advance, Ron

      @@inGods2hands It's pretty extreme. It's more important that you get your cholesterol way down by natural means. You don't need to subsist on spinach to do that. In fact living off that much spinach may cause oxalate buildup. Read the Pritikin Program of diet and exercise.

      I wanted to share that I recently learned that fluoride toothpaste carries a warning on the label. Mine says to contact the nearest poison center if more than the regular dosage is swallowed. A lecture I watched from the Gerson Diet and Charlotte Gerson made me look. So there must be something toxic about fluoride toothpaste, if the manufacturer has to put a warning on the label. Maybe you can check yours and see what it says?

      @TB1M1 4 роки тому

      @Peter Rabitt Yeah thats correct, but I think small amounts of easily soluable omega fatty acids are beneficial. Thats probably why Swank included it. Pritikin didn't quite forsee that. Esselstyns stance is I am sure benefical for people with severe heart disease, but even then may not be enough. This type of fat thins the blood.

      Avoid antiseptic/antibacterial ones. It prevents nitric acid in food Essy talked about from being absorbed in mouth - first stage of digestion.
      nutritionfacts.org/video/dont-use-antiseptic-mouthwash/
      Also no scientific basis or benefit to them. In fact if used after brushing can dilute benefit of toothpaste. Tip: dry brushing w/o toothpaste/water reduces plaque by ~60% more. Brush again lightly w/toothpaste. I’ve researched safety/efficacy of flouride in toothpaste and use it but avoid in water (hard as all crops and 99.9% of food manufacturers use unfiltered water). Don’t eat/drink for 30min after brushing. Teeth are more porous and contents of toothpaste are diluted. 😉🌱
