I think there are four major checkpoints of a season. Memorial Day, the All Star Break, trading deadline, and Labor Day. As long as you avoid an epically bad start like the Marlins have had, I think it is still too early too be concerned. Especially if you are a team with the championship pedigree of the Houston Astros.

Clearly they are too lazy to read the 37 page affidavit. It's all clear now, the "questions" they had were all answered in that affidavit. How did Shohei not know? How was Ippei, an interpreter, able to wire money from Shohei's account? What sport bookie would extend such credit? How did no one else know about the gambling? All the questions are answered in that affidavit. Michael Kay, Dave Samson, Jeff Passan, Chris Rose, and many others who were so eager to jump to dumb conclusions and make insinuations or accusations, owe Shohei an apology. They won't do it, though. They are either haters, racists or stupid.

There's an important detail people seem to be missing about this whole Shohei Ohtani thing: this isn't his only bank account. Everything in the report seems to suggest Ohtani primarily uses his other accounts, and the account Ippei had access to was solely for the purpose of getting deposits from his team (Angels, and now Dodgers). Most of Ohtani's income comes from endorsements, and those probably went to his Japanese bank account that he had since before coming to the U.S., and he seemingly only used those accounts primarily. Which means the account Ippei stole from was probably used solely as a savings account and Ohtani (who is known to be extremely frugal) didn't touch it and didn't let anyone have access to it. The only reason why Ippei had access to it is because Ippei translated the entire bank contract and later on, Ippei impersonated Ohtani to grant himself broader access to the account.

The amount of betting does sound insane, but that was cumulative betting. So, sometimes Ippei would win, sometimes he would lose, so the net would go up and down constantly like a roller coaster. It only became a problem when the net became large losses and kept getting larger, and the bookies were getting concerned they would not get paid. They kept bumping up his credit, but things began to be contentious when Ippei had trouble transferring larger amounts and sometimes would not answer the bookie's texts or calls. In fact, the text from the bookie showed the bookie was getting really mad when Ippei wasn't keeping up with the payments and there was a kind of veiled or implied threat if Ippei couldn't make the required transfers right away.

And I’m not just complaining about Ohtani. This has been going with Spanish speaking players and other Japanese players for years.
