I've had a lot of problems learning how to drive, but nobody has ever had these kinds of collected troubleshooting methods, so I'm excited to learn from you, ma'am.
I passed my driving test literally 2 weeks after Erin and i went along their journey and now i rewatch the last video of hers of passing the test and i feel so nostalgic and emotional like woah we did it 🥺
I smoked my clutch a fair bit when I got my first car, I was trying to do a hill start on a narrow road that wasn't wide enough for traffic both sides, so had to stop. When I tried to move off, forgot I hadn't geared down to first and repeatedly tried to move off in third, blissfully unaware of my error. It was only when the horrible smell started to fill the car that I realised what I'd done. Luckily it wasn't burnt out completely but no doubt I shortened it's lifespan there.
@@Wattermelondog it was about 2 days after I'd passed my test and getting used to a car which was much older and harder to drive than the one I learned in. Basically a classic case of new driver on their own nerves.
That’s not you over revving, that’s you riding the clutch by resting your foot on it. Most cars have a block next to the clutch for your foot to rest on when your not using the clutch, use it
I have driven for 10 years and always have my foot rested on the clutch pedal, to the point that it depresses the clutch slightly, I have never ever had a clutch issue on any of the 5 or 6 cars Ive owned in that time.
@@klausschwab9828 then you’re even blind or dumb because there is a foot rest right next to the clutch to stop morons from resting on the clutch. You’ve just got extremely lucky to have not burnt out a clutch, either that or you’re lying… as a man in the motor trade, I do not recommend doing this
@@mmkokhbuuh Its genuinely not a joke. Im not sure what point you are trying to make? Are you saying the reason I havent had clutch problems is because I sell the car before I wear the clutch out? Im not sure, because I think the clutch pedal has 'give' before it engages the clutch so I think resting your foot on the clutch pedal a little bit is not going to do any damage.
Not over-reving, over-revving is when you down shift and exceed the Rev limiter, causing top-end damage (i.e.) piston on valve due to valve float. I knew from the moment she said her car was stinky that she was riding the clutch. Don’t touch the clutch unless you're moving off or shifting gears
Can you elaborate on what damage is caused when you downshift when the revs are too high ? I'm a learner too and what I noticed was that the car jerks a few times and slows down when I do that occassionally .
@@cat-man5522 if it's below the redline then no damage. you need to give it some throttle while the clutch is pressed in to match the speed of the engine with the speed of the tyre, since all the clutch does is connect the engine to the tyres. no damage if it's below the redline of your engine
@@cat-man5522 if the speed of the engine goes higher than it's designed to, then some internals inside the engine may come in contact with parts it isn't supposed to such as valves and pistons and there may also be too much stress on the engine to where the pistons aren't strong enough and they can snap off, causing pistons to fly up into the air
I had a leaky master cylinder in my '95 MX5 so the bite point kept getting lower and lower until it went below the floor. Last time driving it home before fixing it was a nightmare. Had to push it to neutral and coast to red lights and struggled to get it in 1st on green. Luckily got it home and fixed it
smooth starts are important to preserve the clutch but never forget that a more abrupt start with less revs can also benefit you as you are slipping the clutch less, especially in traffic
Can you explain this comment? I don’t know much about manual but I’m learning and this looks like valuable information if you have the time to explain in detail. :)
@@kristenpage9840 so as you may have been taught, the best way to start from a stand still in a manual car is to hold the clutch on the bite point until you feel the car start going on its own. this is how you should be moving off in most cases and there is nothing to change there. when you start getting in to end to end traffic where you are stopping and starting very frequently, it can be beneficial to your clutch to lift the clutch smoothly but quicker than usual to reduce wear on the clutch. this is jerkier than usual but your wallet will thank you if you live in a place where traffic is unavoidable! doing this method will come naturally to you after you have gotten used to how the clutch feels, don't think that if you don't use this method then you will break your car because you won't, it is just something you can do to reduce clutch wear
@@insertnamehere5660 I’m not quite sure what bite point means. I haven’t been taught any terms just that you let go of the clutch as slow as you can so you don’t stall and apply gas lightly until the car moves. I have experienced the jerky takeoff before but I don’t know how to replicate it. I’m learning on a 2000 ford pickup truck that sucks. I don’t understand the why and how I only understand the do it this way. I would really like to learn the why and how. I’m also confused how a clutch can burn if it is basically just a neutral button? Forgive my ignorance, I would like to learn
@@kristenpage9840 you aren't being ignorant it is good to ask questions, the bite point is the point where the clutch starts to make the car move, it is when the clutch (which is connected to the wheels through the gearbox and doesn't spin on its own) connects to the flywheel of the engine (basically a big metal circle that spins as fast as the engine is going) and makes the vehicle start moving. the reason for the clutch is to dampen all that energy as if it was just an on or off switch this would almost definitely destroy parts of the engine and gearbox. the way you are learning to start is completely correct so keep doing that, but to make things easier just remember that the lower you have the clutch pedal the less it will make the vehicle move, and the higher you have the clutch the quicker it will move due to the increase in friction (think of this like sliding your hand on a railing and the harder you grip the more friction and the faster your hand stops). The clutch can burn because it is made out of iron and carbon which is similar to your brake pads. If you are slipping the clutch (moving the vehicle but not entirely lifting the clutch) for too long (more than 10 seconds in one go) this friction will continue for longer than needed and will heat the material up and weaken it, and it will essentially crumble
When I taught my wife and SiL how to drive stick, the first thing we did was out the hand brake on and practice revving the motor to 3k rpms. Once they could hit it consistently, the next step was starting from a stop. Clutch, Rev to 3k, pop into 1st, slowly let out the clutch. Once they could get it rolling smoothly, then we moved on to shifting gears and driving.
Someone please give this girl a self driving car💀 I didn't know she had previous driving experience, which makes her copious amounts of mistakes even worse😅

Right when she said it was stinky I knew that clutch was gone😂 I burnt the clutch a couple times when learning but only enough to smell it for a sec. Its was definitely worrying though
Without knowing the exact circumstances it does sound like it was partly the car. If your clutch fully gives in from a little burning then the clutch wasn’t far off anyways.
When I got my first car I had to go through this steep roundabout during rush hour every day. I didn’t use the brakes when waiting on the hill (I thought I was too cool for that), I only used the clutch and gas pedal. Only holding down the clutch doesn't burn it out quickly like in this situation. As the instructor was about to explain it came from her over revving the engine while the clutch is down
@alecqqgold6360 That's not what burns the clutch, rather that puts extra wear on the throwout bearing. So yes, that isn't good but it's not the issue on this occasion.
